The conformal cosmological potential

We discuss qualitative features of the conformal relation between certain classes of gravity theories and general relativity, common to different themes such as $f(R)$, Brans-Dicke-type, and string theories. We focus primarily on the frame relations of the fields involved, slice energy, traceless and Palatini extensions, and selected cosmological applications.

Brane-world asymptotics in a nonlinear fluid bulk

We present recent results on the asymptotics of a brane-world that consists of a flat 3-brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk. The bulk matter is modelled by a fluid that satisfies a nonlinear equation of state. We show that for appropriate ranges of the equation of state parameters, it is possible to construct a regular solution, compatible with energy conditions, that successfully localizes gravity on the brane. These results improve significantly previous findings on the study of a bulk fluid with a linear equation of state.

Regular braneworlds with bulk fluids

We review studies on the singularity structure and asymptotic analysis of a 3-brane (flat or curved) embedded in a five-dimensional bulk filled with a `perfect fluid' with an equation of state with the `pressure' and the `density' of the fluid depending on the fifth space coordinate. Regular solutions satisfying positive energy conditions in the bulk exist only in the cases of a flat brane with an EoS parameter equal to -1, or of AdS branes for EoS parameter values in suitable intervals. More cases can be found by gluing two regular branches of solutions at the position of the brane. However, only the case of a flat brane with an EoS parameter equal to -1 leads to finite Planck mass on the brane and thus localises gravity. In a more recent work, we showed that a way to rectify the previous findings and obtain a solution for a flat brane in a finite range of the EoS parameter, which is both free from finite-distance singularities and compatible with the physical conditions of energy and finiteness of four-dimensional Planck mass, is by introducing a bulk fluid component that satisfies a nonlinear equation of state.

Regular braneworlds with nonlinear bulk-fluids

We construct a regular five-dimensional brane-world with localised gravity on a flat 3-brane. The matter content in the bulk is parametrised by an analog of a non-linear fluid with equation of state $p=γρ^λ$ between the `pressure' $p$ and the `density' $ρ$ dependent on the 5th dimension. For $γ$ negative and $λ>1$, the null energy condition is satisfied, and the geometry is free of singularities within finite distance from the brane, while the induced four-dimensional Planck mass is finite.

Curved branes with regular support

We study spacetime singularities in a general five-dimensional braneworld with curved branes satisfying four-dimensional maximal symmetry. The bulk is supported by an analog of perfect fluid with the time replaced by the extra coordinate. We show that contrary to the existence of finite distance singularities from the brane location in any solution with flat (Minkowski) branes, in the case of curved branes there are singularity-free solutions for a range of equations of state compatible with the null energy condition.

Enveloping branes and braneworld singularities

The existence of envelopes is studied for systems of differential equations in connection with the method of asymptotic splittings which allows to determine the singularity structure of the solutions. The result is applied to braneworlds consisting of a 3-brane in a five-dimensional bulk, in the presence of an analog of a bulk perfect fluid parametrizing a generic class of bulk matter. We find that all flat brane solutions suffer from a finite distance singularity contrary to previous claims. We then study the possibility of avoiding finite distance singularities by cutting the bulk and gluing regular solutions at the position of the brane. Further imposing physical conditions such as finite Planck mass on the brane and positive energy conditions on the bulk fluid, excludes however this possibility, as well.

Brane singularities with mixtures in the bulk

By extending previous analysis of the authors, a systematic study of the singularity structure and possible asymptotic behaviors of five-dimensional braneworld solutions is performed in the case where the bulk is a mixture of an analog of perfect fluid (with a density and pressure depending on the extra coordinate) and a massless scalar field. The two bulk components interact by exchanging energy so that the total energy is conserved. In a particular range of the interaction parameters, we find flat brane general solutions avoiding the singularity at finite distance from the brane, in the same region of the equation of state constant parameter $γ=P/ρ$ that we found previously in the absence of the bulk scalar field $(-1<γ<-1/2)$.

Brane singularities and their avoidance in a fluid bulk

Using the method of asymptotic splittings, the possible singularity structures and the corresponding asymptotic behavior of a 3-brane in a five-dimensional bulk are classified, in the case where the bulk field content is parametrized by an analog of perfect fluid with an arbitrary equation of state $P=γρ$ between the `pressure' $P$ and the `density' $ρ$. In this analogy with homogeneous cosmologies, the time is replaced by the extra coordinate transverse to the 3-brane, whose world-volume can have an arbitrary constant curvature. The results depend crucially on the constant parameter $γ$: (i) For $γ>-1/2$, the flat brane solution suffers from a collapse singularity at finite distance, that disappears in the curved case. (ii) For $γ<-1$, the singularity cannot be avoided and it becomes of the type big rip for a flat brane. (iii) For $-1<γ\le -1/2$, the surprising result is found that while the curved brane solution is singular, the flat brane is not, opening the possibility for a revival of the self-tuning proposal.

Brane singularities with a scalar field bulk

The singularity structure and the corresponding asymptotic behavior of a 3-brane coupled to a scalar field in a five dimensional bulk is analyzed in full generality, using the method of asymptotic splittings. It is shown that the collapse singularity at a finite distance from the brane can be avoided only at the expense of making the brane world-volume positively or negatively curved.

The nature of cosmological singularities in isotropic universes and braneworlds

We explore the character of finite-time singularities that are possible to arise in FRW universes and in specific braneworld configurations. For FRW universes, we derive a first classification of singularities that is based on the behaviour of the Hubble rate. We further extend and complete this classification with the use of the Bel-Robinson energy. The braneworld models that we study consist of a three-brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk space that is inhabited by a scalar field or a perfect fluid. Our analysis that is performed with the method of asymptotic splittings shows that these braneworlds can exhibit three main types of singularities that arise within finite distance from the brane.

Braneworld cosmological singularities

The purpose of this brief report is to present some results of our on-going project on the asymptotic behaviour of braneworld-type solutions on approach to their possible finite `time' singularities.

Cosmological Singularities and Bel-Robinson Energy

We consider the problem of describing the asymptotic behaviour of \textsc{FRW} universes near their spacetime singularities in general relativity. We find that the Bel-Robinson energy of these universes in conjunction with the Hubble expansion rate and the scale factor proves to be an appropriate measure leading to a complete classification of the possible singularities. We show how our scheme covers all known cases of cosmological asymptotics possible in these universes and also predicts new and distinct types of singularities. We further prove that various asymptotic forms met in flat cosmologies continue to hold true in their curved counterparts. These include phantom universes with their recently discovered big rips, sudden singularities as well as others belonging to graduated inflationary models.

Bel-Robinson energy and the nature of singularities in isotropic cosmologies

We review our recent work on the classification of finite time singularities that arise in isotropic universes. This scheme is based on the exploitation of the Bel Robinson energy in a cosmological setting. We comment on the relation between geodesic completeness and the Bel Robinson energy and present evidence that relates the divergence of the latter to the existence of closed trapped surfaces.

Singular Isotropic Cosmologies and Bel-Robinson Energy

We consider the problem of the nature and possible types of spacetime singularities that can form during the evolution of \emph{FRW} universes in general relativity. We show that by using, in addition to the Hubble expansion rate and the scale factor, the Bel-Robinson energy of these universes we can consistently distinguish between the possible different types of singularities and arrive at a complete classification of the singularities that can occur in the isotropic case. We also use the Bel-Robinson energy to prove that known behaviours of exact flat isotropic universes with given singularities are generic in the sense that they hold true in every type of spatial geometry.

Modern Approaches to Cosmological Singularities

We review recent work and present new examples about the character of singularities in globally and regularly hyperbolic, isotropic universes. These include recent singular relativistic models, tachyonic and phantom universes as well as inflationary cosmologies.

Future Singularities of Isotropic Cosmologies

We show that globally and regularly hyperbolic future geodesically incomplete isotropic universes, except for the standard all-encompassing `big crunch', can accommodate singularities of only one kind, namely, those having a non-integrable Hubble parameter, $H$. We analyze several examples from recent literature which illustrate this result and show that such behaviour may arise in a number of different ways. We also discuss the existence of new types of lapse singularities in inhomogeneous models, impossible to meet in the isotropic ones.
