Laser-induced heating for the experimental study of critical Casimir forces with optical trapping

Critical Casimir interactions represent a perfect example of bath-induced forces at mesoscales. These forces may have a relevant role in the living systems as well as a role in the design of nanomachines fueled by environmental fluctuations. Since the thermal fluctuations are enhanced in the vicinity of a demixing point of a second-order phase transition, we can modulate the magnitude and range of these Casimir-like forces by slight changes in the temperature. Here, we consider two optical trapped colloidal beads inside a binary mixture. The Casimir interaction is controlled by warming the mixture by laser-induced heating, whose local application ensures high reproducibility. Once this two-particle system is warmed, the critical behavior of different observables allows the system to become its self-thermometer. We use this experimental scheme for analyzing the energetics of a critical colloidal system under a non-equilibrium-driven protocol. We quantify how the injected work can be dissipated to the environment as heat or stored as free energy. Indeed, our system allows us to use the fluctuation theorems framework for analyzing the performance of this critically driven toy model. Our work paves the way for future experimental studies on the non-equilibrium features of bath-induced forces and the design of critically driven nanosystems.

Comment on "Inferring broken detailed balance in the absence of observable currents"

In this reply, we resolve the apparent discrepancy raised in the "Comment on Inferring broken detailed balance in the absence of observable currents" [arXiv:2112.08978v1]. We stress that the non-instantaneous transition paths originate from the choice of a decimation process non-local in time, in contrast to the decimation process described in our original work, which commutes with time-reversal. Therefore, the example using such a non-local decimation procedure, which indeed gives rise to spurious time-irreversibility, does not invalidate our main result, which was rigorously derived and proven mathematically. We hope this reply highlights the subtlety of the different choices for decimating time series data which is pivotal for a correct understanding of the thermodynamics of small systems.

Realization of nonequilibrium thermodynamic processes using external colored noise

We investigate the dynamics of single microparticles immersed in water that are driven out of equilibrium in the presence of an additional external colored noise. As a case study, we trap a single polystyrene particle in water with optical tweezers and apply an external electric field with flat spectrum but a finite bandwidth of the order of kHz. The intensity of the external noise controls the amplitude of the fluctuations of the position of the particle, and therefore of its effective temperature. Here we show, in two different nonequilibrium experiments, that the fluctuations of the work done on the particle obey Crooks fluctuation theorem at the equilibrium effective temperature, given that the sampling frequency and the noise cutoff frequency are properly chosen. Our experimental setup can be therefore used to improve the design of microscopic motors towards fast and efficient devices, thus extending the frontiers of nano machinery.
