Connecting boundary entropy and effective central charge at holographic interfaces

The entanglement entropy of intervals in $1+1$ interface CFTs is modified in two ways compared to a CFT without interface: there is a finite boundary entropy contribution, and, for an interval with an endpoint at the interface, the coefficient of the logarithmically divergent contribution -- which is usually proportional to the central charge of the CFT -- is modified to an effective central charge. We show that the latter modification can be understood as a limit of the former using holographic duals of interface CFTs. Furthermore, we show that a finite contribution also appears in intervals that do not cross the interface and it is needed to ensure strong subbaditivity of the entanglement entropy.

Entanglement transitions in holographic conformal interfaces

We study entanglement transitions for pairs of disjoint intervals in two-dimensional holographic interface conformal field theories. We consider several holographic models with equal central charges on the two sides of the interface: thin-wall geometries with one and two branes, the Janus solution, and the super-Janus solution. We first discuss the finite interface contribution to the entanglement entropy of a single interval, distinguishing intervals that cross the interface from those that lie entirely on one side. We then use the mutual information to locate the transition between connected and disconnected Ryu--Takayanagi geodesic configurations for two intervals. When the interface lies between the two intervals, increasing the boundary entropy $\log g$, which provides a measure of interface strength in the models considered here, generally decreases the critical separation at which the connected configuration ceases to dominate. When both intervals lie on the same side of the interface, the behavior is model dependent: the connected phase persists to larger separations in the Janus and super-Janus models, while the critical separation is unchanged in the thin-wall models. Thus, as diagnosed by the two-interval transition, the interface weakens correlations across the interface while preserving or enhancing correlations between regions on the same side. We also identify a universal ``Silver Blaze'' configuration, in which the interface lies inside one of the intervals and the transition occurs at the same location as in a CFT without an interface, independently of the interface parameters and of the holographic model. This universality follows from a cancellation between crossing and non-crossing interface contributions to the mutual information.

Boundary Layers and One-point Functions in the Presence of Monodromy Defects

We study one-point functions of composites of charge $e$ operators in the presence of a monodromy defect for a $U(1)$ global symmetry with monodromy $β$. We first compute these in free massless and massive theories, recovering in the former case the known $\sin(eπβ)$ dependence and obtaining in the latter a $\sin^2(eπβ)$ dependence. We then turn to holography and compute 1-point functions for operators $O$ of charge $J=Δ$ in $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM in the presence of a monodromy defect for a $U(1)\in SO(6)_R$. From a WKB analysis in large $Δ$ we recover the structure of standard and anchored saddles previously found in the literature, finding that, to subleading order in $1/Δ$, the anchored regime is resolved by a boundary layer effect. Finally, using heat kernel methods, we determine the monodromy dependence of the induced 1-point function for the composite $O^{\dagger}O$, finding a smooth $\sin^2(Jπβ)$ behavior.

A Hilbert Series for Generalized Toric Polygons

We study the Hilbert series for $5d$ Superconformal Field Theories (SCFTs) engineered by Generalized Toric Polygons (GTPs), which extend the geometric realization of these theories from toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds to theories associated to general webs of 5- and 7-branes. Smoothed T-cones provide fundamental building blocks of GTP tessellations, generalizing the role of minimal triangles in toric diagrams. Building on this construction, we propose an extension of the Martelli-Sparks-Yau algorithm for computing Hilbert series of toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds that computes the Ehrhart series directly from GTP tessellations. The Ehrhart series is an invariant under Hanany-Witten transitions, which translate geometrically into polytope mutations.

The 5d Tangram: Brane Webs, 7-Branes and Primitive T-cones

Two highly successful approaches to constructing 5d SCFTs are geometric engineering using M-theory on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and the use of 5-brane webs suspended from 7-branes in Type IIB string theory. In the brane web realization, the extended Coulomb branch of the 5d SCFT can be studied by opening the web using rigid triple intersections of branes--i.e. configurations with no deformations. In this paper, we argue that the geometric engineering counterpart of these rigid triple intersections are the T-cones introduced in the mathematical literature. We extend the class of rigid brane webs to include locked superpositions of the minimal ones. These rigid brane webs serve as fundamental building blocks for supersymmetrically tessellating Generalized Toric Polygons (GTPs) from first principles. Interestingly, we find that the extended Coulomb branch generally exhibits a structure consisting of multiple cones intersecting at a single point. Hanany-Witten (HW) transitions in the web have been conjectured to correspond geometrically to flat fibrations over a line, where the central and generic fibers represent the geometries dual to the webs before and after the transition. We demonstrate this explicitly in an example, showing that for GTPs reducing to standard toric diagrams, the HW transition corresponds to a deformation of the BPS quiver that we map to the geometric deformation.
