The manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices: characterization, Riemannian optimization and application to BD-RIS design

This paper proposes and analyzes Riemannian optimization algorithms on the manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices, denoted ${\cal {U}}_s$, which naturally models the scattering matrices of passive and reciprocal devices such as beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RISs). Despite its relevance, the geometry of ${\cal {U}}_s$ has remained largely unexplored, and existing BD-RIS optimization methods either ignore the symmetry constraint or rely on costly Takagi-based parameterizations. We first provide a rigorous geometric characterization of ${\cal {U}}_s$, deriving its tangent space, a simple retraction, and closed-form expressions for geodesics. Building on these results, we develop two Riemannian manifold optimization (MO) algorithms tailored to ${\cal {U}}_s$: a line-search (LS) based scheme and a phase-optimization (PO) update along geodesics. We then apply the proposed framework to BD-RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) links, addressing sum-gain maximization, rate maximization, and minimum mean-square error problems, where they outperform existing approaches. Furthermore, we show that when the number of BD-RIS elements exceeds the total number of antennas, the optimal scattering matrix is low-rank, which motivates and enables efficient low-rank variants of the proposed algorithms.

Optimal symmetric low-rank BD-RIS configuration maximizing the determinant of a MIMO link

Beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RISs) significantly improve wireless performance by allowing tunable interconnections among elements, but their design in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has so far relied on complex iterative algorithms or suboptimal approximations. This work introduces a simple yet powerful approach: instead of directly maximizing the achievable rate, we maximize the absolute value of the determinant of the equivalent MIMO channel. We derive a closed-form symmetric unitary scattering matrix whose rank is exactly twice the channel's degrees of freedom ($2r$). Remarkably, this low-rank solution achieves the same determinant value as the optimal unitary BD-RIS. Using log-majorization theory, we prove that the rate loss relative to the optimal unitary BD-RIS vanishes at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or when the number of BD-RIS elements becomes large. Moreover, the proposed solution can be perfectly implemented using a $q$-stem BD-RIS architecture with only $q=2r-1$ stems, requiring a minimum number of reconfigurable circuits. The resulting Max-Det solution is orders of magnitude faster to compute than existing iterative methods while achieving near-optimal rates in practical scenarios. This makes high-performance BD-RIS deployment feasible even with large surfaces and limited computational resources.

Riemannian optimization on the manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices with application to BD-RIS-assisted systems

In this paper, we rigorously characterize for the first time the manifold of unitary and symmetric matrices, deriving its tangent space and its geodesics. The resulting parameterization of the geodesics (through a real and symmetric matrix) allows us to derive a new Riemannian manifold optimization (MO) algorithm whose most remarkable feature is that it does not need to set any adaptation parameter. We apply the proposed MO algorithm to maximize the achievable rate in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS), illustrating the method's performance through simulations. The MO algorithm achieves a significant reduction in computational cost compared to previous alternatives based on Takagi decomposition, while retaining global convergence to a stationary point of the cost function.

Spectral-Energy Efficiency Tradeoff of Nearly-Passive RIS in MIMO URLLC Downlink: Diagonal vs. Beyond Diagonal

This paper investigates the spectral and energy efficiency (EE) tradeoff of nearly-passive (NP), both locally and globally NP (GNP), reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), considering diagonal and beyond-diagonal (BD) implementations in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) broadcast channels designed for ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). We demonstrate that while all RIS architectures enhance the spectral efficiency, GNP BD-RIS achieves the highest gains. However, its EE is highly sensitive to the static circuit power consumption since BD-RIS has many more circuit elements than diagonal architectures. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the benefits of BD-RIS over diagonal RIS diminish as the number of data streams per user increases due to enhanced channel diversity in MIMO systems.

Low Probability of Detection Communication Using Noncoherent Grassmannian Signaling

This paper proposes a noncoherent low probability of detection (LPD) communication system based on direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) and Grassmannian signaling. Grassmannian constellations enhance covertness because they tend to follow a noise-like distribution. Simulations showed that Grassmannian signaling provides competitive bit error rates (BER) at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes with low probability of detection at the unintended receiver compared to coherent schemes that use QPSK or QAM modulation formats and need pilots to perform channel estimation. The results suggest the practicality and security benefits of noncoherent Grassmannian signaling for LPD communications due to their improved covertness and performance.

STAR-RIS-aided RSMA for the URLLC multi-user MIMO Downlink

Rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is intrinsically amalgamated with simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to enhance energy efficiency (EE) of the finite block length (FBL) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink. An alternating optimization-based algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming matrices, STAR-RIS configurations, and rate-splitting parameters. STAR-RIS attains 360-degree full-plane coverage, while RSMA provides a prominent gain by efficiently managing interference. Numerical results reveal a strong synergy between RSMA and STAR-RIS, demonstreating significant EE gains over reflective RIS and spatial division multiple access (SDMA).

Energy Efficiency Optimization of Finite Block Length STAR-RIS-aided MU-MIMO Broadcast Channels

Energy-efficient designs are proposed for multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BC), assisted by simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) operating at finite block length (FBL). In particular, we maximize the sum energy efficiency (EE), showing that STAR-RIS can substantially enhance it. Our findings demonstrate that the gains of employing STAR-RIS increase when the codeword length and the maximum tolerable bit error rate decrease, meaning that a STAR-RIS is more energy efficient in a system with more stringent latency and reliability requirements.

Noncoherent MIMO Communications: Theoretical Foundation, Design Approaches, and Future Challenges

Noncoherent communication is a promising paradigm for future wireless systems where acquiring accurate channel state information (CSI) is challenging or infeasible. It provides methods to bypass the need for explicit channel estimation in practical scenarios such as high-mobility networks, massive distributed antenna arrays, energy-constrained Internet-of-Things devices, and unstructured propagation environments. This survey provides a comprehensive overview of noncoherent communication strategies in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, focusing on recent advances since the early 2000s. We classify noncoherent communication schemes into three main approaches where CSI-free signal recovery is based on subspace detection (i.e., Grassmannian signaling), differential detection, and energy detection, respectively. For each approach, we review the theoretical foundation and design methodologies. We also provide comparative insights into their suitability across different channel models and system constraints, highlighting application scenarios where noncoherent methods offer performance and scalability advantages over traditional coherent communication. Furthermore, we discuss practical considerations of noncoherent communication, including compatibility with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), resilience to hardware impairments, and scalability with the number of users. Finally, we provide an outlook on future challenges and research directions in designing robust and efficient noncoherent systems for next-generation wireless networks.

Rate Analysis and Optimization of LoS Beyond Diagonal RIS-assisted MIMO Systems

In this letter, we derive an expression for the achievable rate in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) when the channels to and from the BD-RIS are line-of-sight (LoS) while the direct link is non-line-of-sight (NLoS). The rate expression allows to derive the optimal unitary and symmetric scattering BD-RIS matrix in closed form. Our simulation results show that the proposed solution is competitive even under the more usual Ricean channel fading model when the direct link is weak.

Interference Minimization in Beyond-Diagonal RIS-assisted MIMO Interference Channels

This paper proposes a two-stage approach for passive and active beamforming in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels (ICs) assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS). In the first stage, the passive BD-RIS is designed to minimize the aggregate interference power at all receivers, a cost function called interference leakage (IL). To this end, we propose an optimization algorithm in the manifold of unitary matrices and a suboptimal but computationally efficient solution. In the second stage, users' active precoders are designed under different criteria such as minimizing the IL (min-IL), maximizing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (max-SINR), or maximizing the sum rate (max-SR). The residual interference not cancelled by the BD-RIS is treated as noise by the precoders. Our simulation results show that the max-SR precoders provide more than 20% sum rate improvement compared to other designs, especially when the BD-RIS has a moderate number of elements ($M<20$) and users transmit with high power, in which case the residual interference is still significant.

A Flag Decomposition for Hierarchical Datasets

Flag manifolds encode nested sequences of subspaces and serve as powerful structures for various computer vision and machine learning applications. Despite their utility in tasks such as dimensionality reduction, motion averaging, and subspace clustering, current applications are often restricted to extracting flags using common matrix decomposition methods like the singular value decomposition. Here, we address the need for a general algorithm to factorize and work with hierarchical datasets. In particular, we propose a novel, flag-based method that decomposes arbitrary hierarchical real-valued data into a hierarchy-preserving flag representation in Stiefel coordinates. Our work harnesses the potential of flag manifolds in applications including denoising, clustering, and few-shot learning.

Rate Splitting Multiple Access for RIS-aided URLLC MIMO Broadcast Channels

The performance of modern wireless communication systems is typically limited by interference. The impact of interference can be even more severe in ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) use cases. A powerful tool for managing interference is rate splitting multiple access (RSMA), which encompasses many multiple-access technologies like non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), spatial division multiple access (SDMA), and broadcasting. Another effective technology to enhance the performance of URLLC systems and mitigate interference is constituted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). This paper develops RSMA schemes for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) RIS-aided broadcast channels (BCs) based on finite block length (FBL) coding. We show that RSMA and RISs can substantially improve the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of MIMO RIS-aided URLLC systems. Additionally, the gain of employing RSMA and RISs noticeably increases when the reliability and latency constraints are more stringent. Furthermore, RISs impact RSMA differently, depending on the user load. If the system is underloaded, RISs are able to manage the interference sufficiently well, making the gains of RSMA small. However, when the user load is high, RISs and RSMA become synergetic.

URLLC Networks enabled by STAR-RIS, Rate Splitting, and Multiple Antennas

The challenges in dense ultra-reliable low-latency communication networks to deliver the required service to multiple devices are addressed by three main technologies: multiple antennas at the base station (MISO), rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) with private and common message encoding, and simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS). Careful resource allocation, encompassing beamforming and RIS optimization, is required to exploit the synergy between the three. We propose an alternating optimization-based algorithm, relying on minorization-maximization. Numerical results show that the achievable second-order max-min rates of the proposed scheme outperform the baselines significantly. MISO, RSMA, and STAR-RIS all contribute to enabling ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC).

Rate Region of RIS-Aided URLLC Broadcast Channels: Diagonal versus Beyond Diagonal Globally Passive RIS

We analyze the finite-block-length rate region of wireless systems aided by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), employing treating interference as noise. We consider three nearly passive RIS architectures, including locally passive (LP) diagonal (D), globally passive (GP) D, and GP beyond diagonal (BD) RISs. In a GP RIS, the power constraint is applied globally to the whole surface, while some elements may amplify the incident signal locally. The considered RIS architectures provide substantial performance gains compared with systems operating without RIS. GP BD-RIS outperforms, at the price of increasing the complexity, LP and GP D-RIS as it enlarges the feasible set of allowed solutions. However, the gain provided by BD-RIS decreases with the number of RIS elements. Additionally, deploying RISs provides higher gains as the reliability/latency requirement becomes more stringent.

Energy Efficiency Comparison of RIS Architectures in MISO Broadcast Channels

In this paper, we develop energy-efficient schemes for multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channels (BCs), assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). To this end, we consider three architectures of RIS: locally passive diagonal (LP-D), globally passive diagonal (GP-D), and globally passive beyond diagonal (GP-BD). In a globally passive RIS, the power of the output signal of the RIS is not greater than its input power, but some RIS elements can amplify the signal. In a locally passive RIS, every element cannot amplify the incident signal. We show that these RIS architectures can substantially improve energy efficiency (EE) if the static power of the RIS elements is not too high. Moreover, GP-BD RIS, which has a higher complexity and static power than LP-D RIS and GP-D RIS, provides better spectral efficiency, but its EE performance highly depends on the static power consumption and may be worse than its diagonal counterparts.

Multi-Channel Factor Analysis: Identifiability and Asymptotics

Recent work by Ram\'irez et al. [2] has introduced Multi-Channel Factor Analysis (MFA) as an extension of factor analysis to multi-channel data that allows for latent factors common to all channels as well as factors specific to each channel. This paper validates the MFA covariance model and analyzes the statistical properties of the MFA estimators. In particular, a thorough investigation of model identifiability under varying latent factor structures is conducted, and sufficient conditions for generic global identifiability of MFA are obtained. The development of these identifiability conditions enables asymptotic analysis of estimators obtained by maximizing a Gaussian likelihood, which are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal even under misspecification of the latent factor distribution.

MIMO Capacity Maximization with Beyond-Diagonal RIS

This paper addresses the problem of maximizing the capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS). We maximize the capacity by alternately optimizing the transmit covariance matrix, and the BD-RIS scattering matrix, which, according to network theory, should be unitary and symmetric. These constraints make the optimization of BD-RIS more challenging than that of diagonal RIS. To find a stationary point of the capacity we maximize a sequence of quadratic problems in the manifold of unitary matrices. This leads to an efficient algorithm that always improves the capacity obtained by a diagonal RIS. Through simulation examples, we study the capacity improvement provided by a passive BD-RIS architecture over the conventional RIS model in which the phase shift matrix is diagonal.

Optimization of the Downlink Spectral- and Energy-Efficiency of RIS-aided Multi-user URLLC MIMO Systems

Modern wireless communication systems are expected to provide improved latency and reliability. To meet these expectations, a short packet length is needed, which makes the first-order Shannon rate an inaccurate performance metric for such communication systems. A more accurate approximation of the achievable rates of finite-block-length (FBL) coding regimes is known as the normal approximation (NA). It is therefore of substantial interest to study the optimization of the FBL rate in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which each user may transmit and/or receive multiple data streams. Hence, we formulate a general optimization problem for improving the spectral and energy efficiency of multi-user MIMO-aided ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) systems, which are assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We show that an RIS is capable of substantially improving the performance of multi-user MIMO-aided URLLC systems. Moreover, the benefits of RIS increase as the packet length and/or the tolerable bit error rate are reduced. This reveals that RISs can be even more beneficial in URLLC systems for improving the FBL rates than in conventional systems approaching Shannon rates.
