One-sided median porous sets and one-sided Muckenhoupt distance functions

We introduce the notion of one-sided median porosity for subsets $E$ of $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that this condition is necessary and sufficient for the distance weight $d_E^{-α}$ to belong to a one-sided Muckenhoupt $A_p$ class for some $α>0$ and $1 0$ if and only if $E$ is one-sided weakly porous. In this paper, we find the precise range of exponents $α>0$ such that $d_E^{-α}$ belongs to a one-sided $A_p$ class, both for $p=1$ and for $1<p<\infty$. In addition, we show that $E$ is median porous if and only if it is both left and right median porous, and we give an example of a one-sided median porous set which is neither median porous nor one-sided weakly porous.

The scalar $T1$ theorem for pairs of doubling measures fails for Riesz transforms when p not 2

We show that for an individual Riesz transform in the setting of doubling measures, the scalar $T1$ theorem fails when $p \neq 2$: for each $ p \in (1, \infty) \setminus \{2\}$, we construct a pair of doubling measures $(σ, ω)$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with doubling constant close to that of Lebesgue measure that also satisfy the scalar $\mathcal{A}_p$ condition and the full scalar $L^p$-testing conditions for an individual Riesz transform $R_j$, and yet $\left ( R_j \right )_σ : L^p (σ) \not \to L^p (ω)$. On the other hand, we improve upon the quadratic, or vector-valued, $T1$ theorem of Sawyer-Wick when $p \neq 2$ on pairs of doubling measures: we dispense with their vector-valued weak boundedness property to show that for pairs of doubling measures, the two-weight $L^p$ norm inequality for the vector Riesz transform is characterized by a quadratic Muckenhoupt condition $A_{p} ^{\ell^2, \operatorname{local}}$, and a quadratic testing condition. Finally, in the appendix, we use constructions of Kakaroumpas-Treil to show that the two-weight norm inequality for the maximal function cannot be characterized solely by the $A_p$ condition when the measures are doubling, contrary to reports in the literature.

Medians, Oscillations, and Distance Functions

Vasin (for $n=1$) and Anderson, Lehrbäck, Mudarra, and Vähäkangas (arXiv:2209.06284) (for $n>1$) provided a geometric characterization of the sets $E \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ so that $w = \text{dist}(\cdot, E)^{-α}$ is a Muckenhoupt $A_1$ weight for some $α> 0$. In this paper, we provide a geometric characterization of the sets $E \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ (which we call median porous sets) so that $w = \text{dist}(\cdot, E)^{-α}$ is a Muckenhoupt $A_p$ weight for some $α> 0$ (given any $1 < p \leq \infty$). Given $1 < p \leq \infty$, we also find the precise range of exponents $α$ so that $w = \text{dist}(\cdot, E)^{-α} \in A_p$, in analogy to the $p=1$ case done in arXiv:2209.06284. With our characterization we prove that $\mathbb{R}^n \setminus E$ supports a Hardy-Sobolev inequality if $E$ is an appropriate median porous set. All previous such results that we are aware of make the strictly stronger assumption that the set $E$ is porous, e.g. arXiv:1705.01360, arXiv:1502.01190. As far as we know, this is the first instance in the literature that the ``porosity barrier" is broken in this context. Examples of such appropriate median porous (but not porous) sets were known. We provide further such examples, additional applications to weighted Poincaré inequalities, and a geometric characterization of the nonnegative Hölder continuous functions $w$ such that $\log (w) \in BMO$. We prove that two of the methods we use ($A_p$ and Riesz potential methods) are sharp, i.e. they cannot be improved beyond the results we obtain. The proofs rely on a new median-value characterization of $BMO$: For a real-valued measurable function on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and constants $0 < s < t < 1$, \[\|f\|_{BMO} \approx_{s, t, n} \sup_{Q}[M_t(f, Q) - M_s(f, Q)]\] where $M_s(f, Q)$ denotes the $s$-median value of $f$ on $Q$.

Stability of Weighted Norm Inequalities

We show that while individual Riesz transforms are two weight norm stable under biLipschitz change of variables on $A_{\infty}$ weights, they are two weight norm unstable under even rotational change of variables on doubling weights. More precisely, we show that individual Riesz transforms are unstable under a set of rotations having full measure, which includes rotations arbitrarily close to the identity. This provides an operator theoretic distinction between $A_{\infty}$ weights and doubling weights. More generally, all iterated Riesz transforms of odd order are rotationally unstable on pairs of doubling weights, thus demonstrating the need for characterizations of iterated Riesz transform inequalities using testing conditions for doubling measures, as opposed to the typically stable 'bump' conditions.

A weak to strong type T1 theorem for general smooth Calderón-Zygmund operators with doubling weights, II

We consider the weak to strong type problem for two weight norm inequalities for Calderón-Zygmund operators with doubling weights. We show that if a Calderón-Zygmund operator T is weak type (2,2) with doubling weights, then it is strong type (2,2) if and only if the dual cube testing condition for T^{*} holds, alternatively if and only if the dual cancellation condition of Stein holds. The testing condition can be taken with respect to either cubes or balls, and more generally, this is extended to a weak form of Tb theorem. Finally, we show that for all pairs of locally finite positive Borel measures, and all Stein elliptic Calderón-Zygmund operators T, the weak type (2,2) inequalities for T and and its associated maximal truncations operator T_{*} are equivalent. Thus the characterization of weak type for T_{*} in [LaSaUr1] applies to T as well.

Tops of dyadic grids

We extend the notion of a dyadic grid of cubes in Euclidean space to include infinite dyadic cubes. These `tops' of a dyadic grid form a tiling of Euclidean space which is subject to the constraints similar to those arising in tiling Euclidean space by (finite) unit cubes. These tops arise in the theory of two weight norm inequalities through weighted Haar and Alpert wavelets.

A two weight local $Tb$ theorem for $n$-dimensional fractional singular integrals

We obtain a local two weight $Tb$ theorem with an energy side condition for higher dimensional fractional Calderón-Zygmund operators. The proof follows the general outline of the proof for the corresponding one-dimensional $Tb$ theorem in [SaShUr12], but encountering a number of new challenges, including several arising from the failure in higher dimensions of T. Hytönen's one-dimensional two weight $A_{2}$ inequality [Hyt].

Control of the Bilinear Indicator Cube Testing property

We show that the α-fractional Bilinear Indicator/Cube Testing Constant arising in arXiv:1906.05602 is controlled by the classical fractional Muckenhoupt constant, provided the product measure σ x ω is diagonally reverse doubling (in particular if it is reverse doubling) with exponent exceeding 2(n-α). Moreover, this control is sharp within the class of diagonally reverse doubling product measures. When combined with the main results in arXiv:1906.05602, 1907.07571 and 1907.10734, the above control of BICT_{T^{α}} for α>0 yields a two weight T1 theorem for doubling weights with appropriate diagonal reverse doubling, i.e. the norm inequality for T^{α} is controlled by cube testing constants and the α-fractional one-tailed Muckenhoupt constants (without any energy assumptions), and also yields a corresponding cancellation condition theorem for the kernel of T^{α}, both of which hold for arbitrary α-fractional Calderón-Zygmund operators T^{α}. We do not know if the analogous result for BICT_{H}(σ,ω) holds for the Hilbert transform H in case α=0, but we show that BICT_{H^{dy}}(σ,ω) is not controlled by the Muckenhoupt condition for the dyadic Hilbert transform H^{dy} and doubling weights σ,ω.

A two weight local Tb theorem for the Hilbert transform

We obtain a two weight local Tb theorem for any elliptic and gradient elliptic fractional singular integral operator T on the real line, and any pair of locally finite positive Borel measures on the line. This includes the Hilbert transform and in a sense improves on the T1 theorem by the authors and M. Lacey.

Two Weight Inequalities for the Cauchy Transform from $ \mathbb{R}$ to $ \mathbb{C}_+$

We characterize those pairs of weights $ σ$ on $ \mathbb{R}$ and $ τ$ on $ \mathbb{C}_+$ for which the Cauchy transform $\mathsf{C}_σ f (z) \equiv \int_{\mathbb{R}} \frac {f(x)} {x-z} \; σ(dx)$, $ z\in \mathbb{C}_+$, is bounded from $L ^2(\mathbb{R};σ)$ to $L ^{2}(\mathbb{C}_+; τ)$. The characterization is in terms of an $A_2$ condition on the pair of weights and testing conditions for the transform, extending the recent solution of the two weight inequality for the Hilbert transform. As corollaries of this result we derive (1) a characterization of embedding measures for the model space $K_\vartheta$, for arbitrary inner function $ \vartheta $, and (2) a characterization of the (essential) norm of composition operators mapping $K_\vartheta$ into a general class of Hardy and Bergman spaces.

Failure of necessity of the energy condition

We give an example of a pair of weights (u,v) on the line, and an elliptic convolution singular integral operator H on the line, such that H_u is bounded from L^2(u) to L^2(v), yet the measure pair (u,v) fails to satisfy the backward energy condition. The key to the construction is that the kernel K of H has flat spots where d/dx K(x) = 0. Conversely, we show that if H is gradient elliptic, i.e. d/dx K(x) =< c < 0, then the energy conditions are necessary for boundedness of H, and by our theorem in arXiv:1603.04332v2, the T1 theorem holds for H.

Pinned geometric configurations in Euclidean space and Riemannian manifolds

Let $M$ be a compact $d$-dimensional Riemannian manifold without a boundary. Given $E \subset M$, let $Δ_ρ(E)=\{ρ(x,y): x,y \in E \}$, where $ρ$ is the Riemannian metric on $M$. Let $Δ_ρ^x$ denote the pinned distance set, namely, $\{ρ(x,y): y \in E \}$ with $x \in E$. We prove that if the Hausdorff dimension of $E$ is greater than $\frac{d+1}{2}$, then there exist many $x \in E$ such that the Lebesgue measure of $Δ^x_ρ(E)$ is positive. This result was previously established by Peres and Schlag in the Euclidean setting. The main result is deduced from a variable coefficient Euclidean formulation, which can be used to study a variety of geometric problems. We extend our result to the setting of chains studied in \cite{BIT15} and obtain a pinned estimate in this context. Moreover, we point out that our scheme is quite universal in nature and this idea will be exploited in variety of settings in the sequel.

A Good-Lambda Lemma, two weight T1 theorems without weak boundedness, and a two weight accretive global Tb theorem

The weak boundedness property associated with a standard alpha-fractional Calderon-Zygmund operator and a weight pair is good-lambda controlled by the testing conditions and the Muckenhoupt and energy side conditions. As a consequence, assuming the side conditions, we can eliminate the weak boundedness property from Theorem 1 of arXiv:1603.04332v2 to obtain that T is bounded if and only if the testing conditions hold for T and its dual (an earlier instance of this type of conclusion appears in Lacey and Wick arXiv:1312.6163v3). As a corollary we give a simple derivation of a two weight accretive global Tb theorem from a related T1 theorem. The role of two different parameterizations of the family of dyadic grids, by scale and by translation, is highlighted in simultaneously exploiting both goodness and NTV surgery with families of grids that are common to both measures.

A two weight fractional singular integral theorem with side conditions, energy and k-energy dispersed

This paper is a sequel to our paper Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 32 (2016), no. 1, 79-174. Let T be a standard fractional Calderon Zygmund operator. Assume appropriate Muckenhoupt and quasienergy side conditions. Then we show that T is bounded from one weighted space to another if the quasicube testing conditions hold for T and its dual, and if the quasiweak boundedness property holds for T. Conversely, if T is bounded, then the quasitesting conditions hold, and the quasiweak boundedness condition holds. If the vector of fractional Riesz transforms (or more generally a strongly elliptic vector of transforms) is bounded, then the appropriate Muckenhoupt conditions hold. We do not know if our quasienergy conditions are necessary in higher dimensions, except for certain situations in which one of the measures is one-dimensional as in arXiv:1310.4820 and arXiv:1505.07822v4, and for certain side conditions placed on the measures such as doubling and k-energy dispersed, which when k=n-1 is similar to the condition of uniformly full dimension in Lacey and Wick arXiv:1312.6163v3.

Measures of polynomial growth and classical convolution inequalities

We study $L^p(μ) \to L^q(ν)$ mapping properties of the convolution operator $ T_λf(x)=λ*(fμ)(x)$ and of the corresponding maximal operator $ {\mathcal T}_λf(x)=\sup_{t>0} |λ_t*(fμ)(x)|$, where $λ$ is a tempered distribution, and $μ$ and $ν$ are compactly supported measures satisfying the polynomial growth bounds $μ(B(x,r)) \leq Cr^{s_μ}$ and $ν(B(x,r)) \leq Cr^{s_ν}$. As a result, we prove variants of the classical $L^p$-improving (Littman; Strichartz) and maximal (Stein) inequalities in a setting where the Plancherel formula is not available. Connections with the David-Semmes conjecture are also discussed.

The two weight T1 theorem for fractional Riesz transforms when one measure is supported on a curve

Using our T1 theorem with an energy side condition allowing common point masses, we extend our previous work in arXiv:1310.4484v3 on one measure supported on a line, to include regular C(1,delta) curves and to permit common point masses. In the special case of the Cauchy transform with one measure supported on the circle, this gives a slightly different conclusion than that in arXiv:1310.4820v4.
