Transverse momentum dependent distributions in $e^+e^-$ and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering using jets

The extraction of transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) is complicated by the presence of both initial- and final-state nonperturbative physics. We recently proposed measuring jets (instead of hadrons) as a solution, showing that for the Winner-Take-All jet axis the same factorization formulae valid for hadrons applied to jets of arbitrary size. This amounts to simply replacing TMD fragmentation functions by our TMD jet functions. In this paper we present the calculation of these jet functions at one loop. We obtain phenomenological results for $e^+e^- \to$ dijet (Belle II, LEP) and SIDIS (HERA, EIC) with a jet, building on the arTeMiDe code. Surprisingly, we find that the limit of large jet radius describes the full $R$ results extremely well, and we extract the two-loop jet function in this limit using Event2, allowing us to achieve N$^3$LL accuracy. We demonstrate the perturbative convergence of our predictions and explore the kinematic dependence of the cross section. Finally, we investigate the sensitivity to nonperturbative physics, demonstrating that jets are a promising probe of proton structure.

Quarkonium TMD fragmentation functions in NRQCD

We study the transverse-momentum spectrum of quarkonium production from single light-parton fragmentation mechanism. In the case of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, we observe that there are two possible initiating processes, namely photon-gluon fusion and light-quark fragmentation. For the second case we derive the factorization theorem, which involves a new hadronic quantity: the quarkonium transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions in NRQCD. We calculate their matching onto the non-perturbative long distance matrix elements at the lowest order in the strong-coupling constant (${\mathcal O}(α_s^2)$). Focusing on the case of the electron-ion collider, we make a comparative phenomenological study of the two production mechanisms and find the regions of the phase space where one is dominant over the other.

Non-perturbative structure of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic and Drell-Yan scattering at small transverse momentum

We consider semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan events within transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. Based on the simultaneous fit of multiple data points, we extract the unpolarized TMD distributions and the non-perturbative evolution kernel. The high quality of the fit confirms a complete universality of TMD non-perturbative distributions. The extraction is supplemented by phenomenological analyses of various parts of the TMD factorization, such as sensitivity to non-perturbative parameterizations, perturbative orders, collinear distributions, correlations between parameters, and others.

Non-perturbative contributions to vector-boson transverse momentum spectra in hadronic collisions

Experimental measurements of Drell-Yan (DY) vector-boson production are available from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and from lower-energy collider and fixed-target experiments. In the region of low vector-boson transverse momenta $q_T$, which is important for the extraction of the $W$-boson mass at the LHC, QCD contributions from non-perturbative Sudakov form factors and intrinsic transverse momentum distributions become relevant. We study the potential for determining such contributions from fits to LHC and lower-energy experimental data, using the framework of low-$q_T$ factorization for DY differential cross sections in terms of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution functions. We investigate correlations between different sources of TMD non-perturbative effects, and correlations with collinear parton distributions. We stress the relevance of accurate DY measurements at low masses and with fine binning in transverse momentum for improved determinations of long-distance contributions to Sudakov evolution processes and TMDs.

Probing Transverse-Momentum Distributions With Groomed Jets

We present the transverse momentum spectrum of groomed jets in di-jet events for $e^+e^-$ collisions and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The jets are groomed using a soft-drop grooming algorithm which helps in mitigating effects of non-global logarithms and underlying event. At the same time, by reducing the final state hadronization effects, it provides a clean access to the non-perturbative part of the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. In SIDIS experiments we look at the transverse momentum of the groomed jet measured w.r.t. the incoming hadron in the Breit frame. Because the final state hadronization effects are significantly reduced, the SIDIS case allows to probe the TMD parton distribution functions. We discuss the sources of non-perturbative effects in the low transverse momentum region including novel (but small) effects that arise due to grooming. We derive a factorization theorem within SCET and resum any large logarithm in the measured transverse momentum up to NNLL accuracy using the $ζ$-prescription as implemented in the artemide package and provide a comparison with simulations.

Linearly polarized gluons at next-to-next-to leading order and the Higgs transverse momentum distribution

We calculate the small-b (or large-qT) matching of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution for linearly polarized gluons to the integrated gluon distributions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). This is the last missing part for the complete NNLO prediction of the Higgs spectrum within TMD factorization. We discuss the numerical impact of the correction so derived to the qT-differential cross-section for Higgs boson production and to the positivity bound for linearly polarized gluon transverse momentum distribution.

Linearly polarised Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Function at NNLO in QCD

We present for first time the computation at large $q_T$ (or small $b_T$) matching coefficients of Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Function (TMDPDF) for linearly polarised to the integrated gluon distribution at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO). The computation is performed using the modified $δ$-regulator for rapidity divergences and dimensional regularization. This TMDPDF matriz element presnts phenomenological interest in two kind of processes. The factorization of the Higgs production transverse momentum ($q_T$) distribution through gluon-gluon fusion and the quarkonium production.

Studying transverse momentum distributions with jets at N$^3$LL

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) is a promising channel for the extraction of transverse momentum dependent distributions at future colliders. In this context, we recently developed a framework that uses jets (instead of single hadrons) to achieve reduced sensitivity to final-state non-perturbative effects. A suitable non-standard jet definition allows us to apply the factorization formulas valid for hadrons to jets of arbitrary size, by just replacing fragmentation functions with the jet functions we computed. Besides presenting the framework, we will show numerical predictions at N$^3$LL accuracy.

Collinear matching for Sivers function at next-to-leading order

We evaluate the light-cone operator product expansion for the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent (TMD) operator in the background-field technique up twist-3 inclusively. The next-to-leading order (NLO) matching coefficient for the Sivers function is derived. The method, as well as many details of the calculation, are presented.

Extraction of unpolarized quark transverse momentum dependent parton distributions from Drell-Yan/Z-boson production

We present the extraction of unpolarized quark transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and the non-perturbative part of TMD evolution kernel from the global analysis of Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production data. The analysis is performed at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, using the $ζ$-prescription. The estimation of the error-propagation from the experimental uncertainties to non-perturbative function is made by the replica method. The importance of the inclusion of the precise LHC data and its influence on the determination of non-perturbative functions is discussed.

Jet axes and universal transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation

We study the transverse momentum spectrum of hadrons in jets. By measuring the transverse momentum with respect to a judiciously chosen axis, we find that this observable is insensitive to (the recoil of) soft radiation. Furthermore, for small transverse momenta we show that the effects of the jet boundary factorize, leading to a new transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation function. In contrast to the usual TMD fragmentation functions, it does not involve rapidity divergences and is universal in the sense that it is independent of the type of process and number of jets. These results directly apply to sub-jets instead of hadrons. We discuss potential applications, which include studying nuclear modification effects in heavy-ion collisions and identifying boosted heavy resonances.

A short review on recent developments in TMD factorization and implementation

In the latest years the theoretical and phenomenological advances in the factorization of several collider processes using the transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD)has greatly increased. I attempt here a short resume of the newest developments discussing also the most recent perturbative QCD calculations. The work is not strictly directed to experts in the field and it wants to offer an overview of the tools and concepts which are behind the TMD factorization and evolution. I consider both theoretical and phenomenological aspects, some of which have still to be fully explored. It is expected that actual colliders and the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) will provide important information in this respect.

Matching of transverse momentum dependent distributions at twist-3

We derive the leading order matching of the quark generated polarized transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions onto the collinear functions at small values of the transverse distance. Starting from the very definition of the TMD operator and performing the light-cone operator product expansion up to twist-3 order, we evaluate each distribution directly in position space. We primarily consider the cases of Sivers, Boer-Mulders and worm-gear functions. The effects of the TMD process dependence on the matching are explicitly shown. We also discuss the moments of TMD distributions which can be relevant for lattice calculations.

Systematic analysis of double-scale evolution

Often the factorization of differential cross sections results in the definition of fundamental hadronic functions/distributions which have a double-scale evolution, as provided by a pair of coupled equations. Typically, the two scales are the renormalization and rapidity scales. The two-dimensional structure of their evolution is the object of the present study . In order to be more specific, we consider the case of the transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD). Nonetheless, most of our findings can be used with other double-scale parton distributions. On the basis of the two-dimensional structure of TMD evolution, we formulate the general statement of the $ζ$-prescription introduced in \cite{Scimemi:2017etj}, and we define an optimal TMD distribution, which is a scaleless model-independent universal non-perturbative function. A significant part of this work is devoted to the study of the effects of truncation of perturbation theory on the double-scale evolution. We show that within truncated perturbation theory the solution of evolution equations is ambiguous and this fact generates extra uncertainties within the resummed cross-section. The alternatives to bypass this issue are discussed. We discuss the effects of the scale variation effects and show that these uncertainties reduce within the non-ambiguous solutions that we propose.

Transverse momentum dependent distributions with jets

We investigate the use of jets to measure transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs). The example we use to present our framework is the dijet momentum decorrelation at lepton colliders. Translating this momentum decorrelation into an angle $θ\ll 1$, we analyze the factorization of the cross section for the cases $θ\gg R$, $θ\sim R$ and $θ\ll R$, where $R$ is the jet radius. Critically, for the Winner-Take-All axis, the jet TMD has the same double-scale renormalization group evolution as TMD fragmentation functions for all radii $R$. TMD fragmentation functions in factorization theorems may then simply be replaced by the jet TMDs we calculate, and all ingredients to perform the resummation to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy are available. Our approach also applies to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), where a jet instead of a hadron is measured in the final state, and we find a clean method to probe the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks and gluons in the proton that is less sensitive to final-state nonperturbative effects.

Unpolarized Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution and Fragmentation Functions at next-to-next-to-leading order

The transverse momentum dependent parton distribution/fragmentation functions (TMDs) are essential in the factorization of a number of processes like Drell-Yan scattering, vector boson production, semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, etc. We provide a comprehensive study of unpolarized TMDs at next-to-next-to-leading order, which includes an explicit calculation of these TMDs and an extraction of their matching coefficients onto their integrated analogues, for all flavor combinations. The obtained matching coefficients are important for any kind of phenomenology involving TMDs. In the present study each individual TMD is calculated without any reference to a specific process. We recover the known results for parton distribution functions and provide new results for the fragmentation functions. The results for the gluon transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions are presented for the first time at one and two loops. We also discuss the structure of singularities of TMD operators and TMD matrix elements, crossing relations between TMD parton distribution functions and TMD fragmentation functions, and renormalization group equations. In addition, we consider the behavior of the matching coefficients at threshold and make a conjecture on their structure to all orders in perturbation theory.

Transverse momentum dependent transversely polarized distributions at next-to-next-to-leading-order

We calculate the matching of the transversity and pretzelosity transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) on transversity collinear distribution at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We find that the matching coefficient for pretzelosity distribution is zero, despite the matrix element for it is nontrivial. This result suggests that the pretzelosity matches a twist-4 distribution. The matching for transversity TMD distributions is provided for both parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions cases.

The MSR Mass and the ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ Renormalon Sum Rule

We provide a detailed description and analysis of a low-scale short-distance mass scheme, called the MSR mass, that is useful for high-precision top quark mass determinations, but can be applied for any heavy quark $Q$. In contrast to earlier low-scale short-distance mass schemes, the MSR scheme has a direct connection to the well known $\overline{\rm MS}$ mass commonly used for high-energy applications, and is determined by heavy quark on-shell self-energy Feynman diagrams. Indeed, the MSR mass scheme can be viewed as the simplest extension of the $\overline{\rm MS}$ mass concept to renormalization scales $\ll m_Q$. The MSR mass depends on a scale $R$ that can be chosen freely, and its renormalization group evolution has a linear dependence on $R$, which is known as R-evolution. Using R-evolution for the MSR mass we provide details of the derivation of an analytic expression for the normalization of the ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ renormalon asymptotic behavior of the pole mass in perturbation theory. This is referred to as the ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ renormalon sum rule, and can be applied to any perturbative series. The relations of the MSR mass scheme to other low-scale short-distance masses are analyzed as well.
