Dispersive analysis of the $\boldsymbol{J/\psi \to \gamma \pi^0 \pi^0}$ process

We present a dispersive amplitude analysis of the low-energy $\pi^0\pi^0$ system in the radiative decay $J/\psi\to\gamma\pi^0\pi^0$, using the mass-independent BESIII $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ intensities, the total spectrum, and the measured $0^{++}-2^{++}$ $E1$ phase difference. The isoscalar $S$-wave is described by a coupled-channel $\pi\pi/K\bar K$ Muskhelishvili-Omn\`es representation, which implements the strong final-state interactions associated with the $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$. The $D$-wave is treated with a single-channel $\pi\pi$ Muskhelishvili-Omn\`es representation, where we identify all kinematic constraints of helicity amplitudes before transforming them to the experimental $E1$, $M2$, and $E3$ multipoles. Smooth short-distance production of a pseudoscalar-meson pair is encoded in subtraction polynomials, while left-hand-cut effects are estimated and found to be numerically subleading. We identify the negative solution of the BESIII $0^{++}-2^{++}$ $E1$ phase ambiguity, after using the modulo-$\pi$ freedom of production amplitudes, as the phase solution compatible with unitarity constraints, showing that the measured phase information can be accommodated with the Omn\`es phase motion without requiring large additional phases. By normalizing the BESIII intensities with the extracted branching fraction, we fix the absolute scale of the fitted amplitudes, making them suitable as input for future dispersive studies of two-pion contributions to gravitational form factors.

Simultaneous Dalitz-plot decomposition of the $e^+ e^- \to J/\psi \, \pi \, \pi \, (K \bar{K})$ processes in the 4.13-4.36 GeV region using dispersive final-state interactions

We present a joint analysis of the processes $e^+e^- \to J/\psi\pi^+\pi^-$ and $e^+e^- \to J/\psi K^+K^-$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.13 to 4.36 GeV. The amplitudes are constructed using the Dalitz-plot decomposition formalism, with the $e^+e^-$ energy dependence encoded through the $Y(4220)$ and $Y(4320)$ resonant structures together with a non-resonant production mechanism. The scalar $\pi\pi/K\bar K$ final-state interaction is treated dispersively using a coupled-channel Omn\`es representation. This allows us to describe the measured total cross sections and one-dimensional invariant-mass distributions with a single set of energy-independent parameters. We find that a purely resonant description of the BESIII data is insufficient, requiring a non-resonant term at the amplitude level which undergoes $\pi\pi/K\bar{K}$ rescattering. Within the present isobar model, we extract Breit-Wigner parameters for the $Z_c(3900)$, $Y(4220)$, and $Y(4320)$ states, and determine the corresponding subprocess cross sections.

Dispersive analysis of the $\boldsymbol{\phi \to \gamma \pi^0 \pi^0}$ process

We present an analysis of the radiative decay $\phi \to \gamma \pi^0 \pi^0$ in a dispersive framework, where the two-pion subsystem undergoes strong final-state interactions that cover the $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$ regions. We employ a coupled-channel Muskhelishvili-Omn\`es framework that allows for a consistent treatment of two scalar resonances and crossed-channel singularities induced by the Born and vector-meson exchanges. We explicitly verify the equivalence between the modified and standard Muskhelishvili-Omn\`es representations for vector-meson pole contributions when the isoscalar Omn\`es matrix is chosen asymptotically bounded, and we adopt the standard representation in decay kinematics. This yields, for the first time, a parameter-free dispersive prediction for the kaon Born rescattering, which provides a dominant contribution. To obtain a good fit to the KLOE and SND data, we employ a once-subtracted coupled-channel dispersion relation with heavier left-hand cut contributions and two unknown subtraction constants. The results demonstrate the consistency among the data for $\pi\pi$ scattering, $\gamma\gamma$ fusion, and $\phi $ radiative decay, thereby validating the underlying dispersive formalism and the input used for the hadronic Omn\`es matrix and left-hand cuts.

Coupled-channel Omn\`es matrix for the $D$-wave isoscalar $\pi\pi/K\bar K$ system and its application to $J/\psi\to\pi^{0}\pi^{0}\gamma,\,K_{S}K_{S}\gamma$

In this work, we construct the $D$-wave isoscalar $\pi\pi/K\bar K$ coupled-channel Omn\`es matrix, formulated to satisfy unitarity, analyticity, and the appropriate asymptotic behavior. We employ a two-channel $K$-matrix model containing poles associated with the $f_{2}(1270)$ and $f_{2}'(1525)$ resonances. The resulting unitary scattering matrix, which reproduces the experimental $\pi\pi\to\pi\pi$ and $\pi\pi\to K\bar K$ data and PDG information, serves as input to the homogeneous two-channel Muskhelishvili-Omn\`es equation. We compare our Omn\`es matrix with previous constructions based on $\pi\pi\to K\bar K$ phases extracted from sums of Breit-Wigner amplitudes. The Omn\`es matrix developed here provides a reliable dispersive input for form-factor calculations and resonance studies in the tensor-meson sector. As an application, we show that it enables a simultaneous and accurate description of the BESIII $J/\psi\to\pi^{0}\pi^{0}\gamma$ and $J/\psi\to K_{S}K_{S}\gamma$ spectra in the $J=2$ electric-dipole (E1) partial wave.

HadroTOPS: A Monte Carlo Event Generator For Hadron Production In Two-Photon Scattering In Electron Positron Collisions

We present a Monte Carlo event generator specifically developed for the study of hadronic two-photon fusion events in two-photon scattering at electron-positron colliders. The code enables the generation of events with exact leading-order QED coupling and a flat phase space decay of the hadronic state into an arbitrary number of final state particles as selected by the user. Thus, this generator is well-suited for the use of partial wave analyses tools to study the two-photon production of higher-multiplicity final states across a wide range of energies and photon virtualities. Furthermore, the code integrates both experimental and theoretical inputs on the two-photon couplings of hadrons to simulate two-photon production processes. Motivated by the investigations of the BESIII collaboration, the final states $\pi^+\pi^-$, $\pi^0\pi^0$, $\pi^0\eta$, $K^+K^-$, $K^0_SK^0_S$, $\eta\eta$, and $f_1(1285)\to \eta\pi^+\pi^-$ via $a_0^\pm(980)\pi^\mp$ and $f_0(500)\eta$ are currently included. The code is sufficiently flexible to easily add additional final states as well as quickly change the already included channels.

Dalitz-plot decomposition for the $e^+ e^- \to J/\psi \, \pi \, \pi \, (K \bar{K})$ and $e^+ e^- \to h_c \, \pi \, \pi$ processes

We present an analysis of the $e^+ e^- \to \gamma^* \to J/\psi \, \pi \, \pi \, (K \bar{K})$ and $e^+ e^- \to \gamma^* \to h_c \, \pi \, \pi$ processes employing the recently proposed Dalitz-plot decomposition approach, which is based on the helicity formalism for three-body decays. For the above reactions, we validate the factorization of the overall rotation for all decay chains and spin alignments, along with the crossing symmetry between final states, using a Lagrangian-based toy model. For the model-dependent factors that describe the subchannel dynamics, we employ the dispersive treatment of the $\pi \, \pi \, (K \bar{K})$ final state interaction, which accurately reproduces pole positions and couplings of the $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$ resonances. The constructed amplitudes serve as an essential framework to further constrain the properties of the charged exotic states $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$, produced in these reactions.

A dispersive estimate of the $a_0(980)$ contribution to $(g-2)_\mu$

A dispersive implementation of the $a_0(980)$ resonance to $(g-2)_\mu$ requires the knowledge of the double-virtual $S$-wave $\gamma^*\gamma^*\to\pi\eta/ K K(I=1)$ amplitudes. To obtain these amplitudes, we used a modified coupled-channel Muskhelishvili-Omnes formalism, with input from the left-hand cuts and the hadronic Omnes matrix. The latter was derived using a data-driven N/D method, where the hadronic left-hand cuts were approximated via a conformal expansion. Due to the absence of direct hadronic data in the $\pi\eta$ channel, the expansion coefficients were fitted to various experimental data sets on two-photon fusion processes with $\pi\eta$ and $K K$ final states. The resulting dispersive estimate for the $a_0(980)$ contribution to $(g-2)_\mu$ is $a_\mu^{HLbL}[a_0(980)]_{resc.}=-0.43(1)(2)\times 10^{-11}$, which presents an order of magnitude improvement in precision over the narrow resonance approximation.

Phenomenological model for the $\gamma^*\gamma \to \eta \pi^+ \pi^-$ reaction in the $f_1(1285)$ energy region

Motivated by the ongoing analysis by the BESIII Collaboration on the single-tagged $e^+e^-\to e^+e^- \eta \pi^+\pi^-$ reaction, we present a phenomenological study of the diphoton fusion to $\eta \pi^+ \pi^-$, focusing on the production mechanism of the $f_1(1285)$ resonance. Contributions from the $f_1(1285)\to a_0(980)^\pm\, \pi^\mp$ and $f_1(1285)\to \sigma/f_0(500)\, \eta$ channels are included without introducing free parameters within an effective Lagrangian approach. Assuming the destructive interference between the amplitudes, we predict the invariant mass distributions, angular distributions, and total cross sections of the $\gamma^*\gamma \to \eta\pi^+\pi^-$ process, which will be tested by the forthcoming BESIII measurements.

Pion polarizabilities from a dispersive analysis of $\gamma\gamma \to \pi\pi$

We present results for the charged and neutral pion polarizabilities, obtained through a dispersive analysis of photon-fusion reactions with two pions in the final state. This analysis is motivated by current and future measurements at COMPASS, JLab (Hall D), and the BESIII measurement of single-virtual photon-fusion reactions in the space-like region, offering insight into generalized pion polarizabilities. To improve predictions within an unsubtracted dispersion formalism with only the pion left-hand cut, one needs to consider the influence of heavier left-hand cuts. We parametrize the latter using an expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, capturing the analytical structure of the left-hand cuts. The coefficients in this expansion are determined from the matching with the Lagrangian-based approach, the Adler zero constraint for $\gamma\gamma \to \pi^0\pi^0$, and a fit to the cross-section data. The extension to the single-virtual case is also discussed.

Phenomenological model for $\gamma\gamma^* \to K\bar{K}^*(892)$ constraining the $f_1(1420)$ transition form factor

We present a phenomenological study of the $\gamma\gamma^*\to K\bar{K}^*(892)$ process by including the $s$-channel production of the $\eta(1475)$ and $f_1(1420)$ resonances. The non-resonant channel via $K$- and $K^*$-exchanges is investigated carefully by performing the Lorentz tensor decomposition and is constructed to yield a correct high-energy Regge behavior. The transition form factor of $f_1(1420)$ is adjusted to achieve a reasonable description of the existing L3 data in the $f_1(1420)$ resonance region. This model is intended to serve as a Monte Carlo generator for the analysis currently being performed by the BESIII Collaboration. We also estimate the polarized $\gamma\gamma^*\to K\bar{K}^*(892)$ cross sections and demonstrate how to extract the transition form factors of $f_1(1420)$ from the polarized cross sections.

A dispersive estimate of the $a_0(980)$ contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering in $(g-2)_μ$

A dispersive implementation of the $a_0(980)$ resonance to $(g-2)_μ$ requires the knowledge of the double-virtual $S$-wave $γ^*γ^*\toπη/ K\bar{K}_{I=1}$ amplitudes. To obtain these amplitudes we used a modified coupled-channel Muskhelischvili-Omnès formalism, with the input from the left-hand cuts and the hadronic Omnès function. The latter were obtained using a data-driven $N/D$ method in which the fits were performed to the different sets of experimental data on two-photon fusion processes with $πη$ and $K\bar{K}$ final states. This yields the preliminary dispersive estimate $a_μ^{HLbL}[a_0(980)]_{resc.}=-0.46(2)\times 10^{-11}$.

The case for an EIC Theory Alliance: Theoretical Challenges of the EIC

We outline the physics opportunities provided by the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). These include the study of the parton structure of the nucleon and nuclei, the onset of gluon saturation, the production of jets and heavy flavor, hadron spectroscopy and tests of fundamental symmetries. We review the present status and future challenges in EIC theory that have to be addressed in order to realize this ambitious and impactful physics program, including how to engage a diverse and inclusive workforce. In order to address these many-fold challenges, we propose a coordinated effort involving theory groups with differing expertise is needed. We discuss the scientific goals and scope of such an EIC Theory Alliance.

Phenomenological model for the $γγ\to π^+π^-π^0$ reaction

We present a phenomenological model for the $γγ\to π^+π^-π^0$ reaction by including the production mechanism of the $a_2(1320)$ resonance, as well as the contributions from the $σ/f_0(500)\, π^0$ and $f_2(1270)\, π^0 $ production channels. Furthermore, the $γγ\toρ^{\pm} π^{\mp}\toπ^{+}π^-π^0$ channel, which is essential for a description in the low-energy region, is investigated carefully by introducing the complete set of gauge invariant and Lorentz-covariant tensors for the $γγ\toρ^\pm π^\mp$ subprocess. The full amplitude is constructed to yield a correct high-energy Regge behavior. Within our model, we achieve a very reasonable description of ARGUS and L3 data of the total cross section, as well as of the $π^\pmπ^0$ and $π^+π^-$ invariant mass distributions. We also predict the invariant mass distributions in the $γγ$ center-of-mass energy range from $0.8$ GeV to $2.0$ GeV, which will be studied by the forthcoming data of the BESIII collaboration.

Analytical dispersive parameterization for elastic scattering of spinless particles

In this paper, we present an improved parameterization of the elastic scattering of spin-0 particles, which is based on a dispersive representation for the inverse scattering amplitude. Besides being based on well known general principles, the requirement that the inverse amplitude should satisfy the dispersion relation significantly constrains its possible forms and have not been incorporated in the existing parameterizations so far. While the right-hand cut of the inverse scattering amplitude is controlled by unitarity, the contribution from the left-hand cut, which comes from the crossing symmetry, is commonly ignored or incorporated improperly. The latter is parameterized using the expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, which accounts for its analytic structure. The correct implementations of the Adler zero and threshold factors for angular momentum $J>0$ are discussed in detail as well. The amplitudes are written in a compact analytic form and provide a useful tool to analyze current and future lattice data in the elastic region improving upon the commonly used Breit-Wigner or K-matrix approaches.

Analytical dispersive parameterization for S-wave $ππ$ and $πK$ scattering

In this proceeding, we illustrate the applicability of a new parameterization of the S-wave amplitude on the example of the $ππ\to ππ$ and $πK \to πK $ lattice data ($m_π\sim 240$ MeV) from the HadSpec collaboration. The applied parameterization follows from the dispersive representation for the inverse scattering amplitude. The left-hand cut contribution is parametrized by the series in a suitably constructed conformal variable. The crucial input in the analysis is the Adler zero, whose position we extracted from the chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order with the uncertainties propagated from the low-energy constants.

Dispersive analysis of the $ππ$ and $πK$ scattering data

We present a data-driven analysis of the S-wave $ππ\to ππ\,(I=0,2)$ and $πK \to πK\,(I=1/2, 3/2)$ reactions using the partial-wave dispersion relation. The contributions from the left-hand cuts are parametrized using the expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, which accounts for its analytical structure. The partial-wave dispersion relation is solved numerically using the $N/D$ method. The fits to the experimental data supplemented with the constraints from chiral perturbation theory at threshold and Adler zero give the results consistent with Roy-like (Roy-Steiner) analyses. For the $ππ$ scattering we present the coupled-channel analysis by including additionally the $K\bar{K}$ channel. By the analytic continuation to the complex plane, we found poles associated with the lightest scalar resonances $σ/f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$, and $κ/K_0^*(700)$. For all the channels we also performed the fits directly to the Roy-like (Roy-Steiner) solutions in the physical region, in order to minimize the $N/D$ uncertainties in the complex plane and to extract the most constrained Omnès functions.

Dispersive analysis of the $γγ\to D \bar{D}$ data and the confirmation of the $D \bar{D}$ bound state

In this paper, we present a data-driven analysis of the $γγ\to D^+D^-$ and $γγ\to D^0\bar{D}^0$ reactions from threshold up to 4.0 GeV in the $D\bar{D}$ invariant mass. For the $S$-wave contribution, we adopt a partial-wave dispersive representation, which is solved using the $N/D$ ansatz. The left-hand cuts are accounted for using the model-independent conformal expansion. The $D$-wave $χ_{c2}(3930)$ state is described as a Breit-Wigner resonance. The resulting fits are consistent with the data on the invariant mass distribution of the $e^+e^- \to J/ψD\bar{D}$ process. Performing an analytic continuation to the complex $s$-plane, we find no evidence of a pole corresponding to the broad resonance $X(3860)$ reported by the Belle Collaboration. Instead, we find a clear bound state below the $D\bar{D}$ threshold at $\sqrt{s_B} = 3695(4)$ MeV, confirming the previous phenomenological and lattice predictions.

A dispersive estimate of scalar contributions to hadronic light-by-light scattering

We consider the contribution of scalar resonances to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. While the $f_0(500)$ has already been addressed in previous work using dispersion relations, heavier scalar resonances have only been estimated in hadronic models so far. Here, we compare an implementation of the $f_0(980)$ resonance in terms of the coupled-channel $S$-waves for $γ^*γ^*\to ππ/\bar K K$ to a narrow-width approximation, which indicates $a_μ^{\text{HLbL}}[f_0(980)]=-0.2(2)\times 10^{-11}$. With a similar estimate for the $a_0(980)$, the combined effect is thus well below $1\times 10^{-11}$ in absolute value. We also estimate the contribution of heavier scalar resonances. In view of the very uncertain situation concerning their two-photon couplings we suggest to treat them together with other resonances of similar mass when imposing the matching to short-distance constraints. Our final result is a refined estimate of the $S$-wave rescattering effects in the $ππ$ and $\bar K K$ channel up to about $1.3$ GeV and including a narrow-width evaluation of the $a_0(980)$: $a_μ^\text{HLbL}[\text{scalars}]=-9(1)\times 10^{-11}$.
