Finite bands are finitely related

We prove that every finite idempotent semigroup (band) is finitely related, which means that the clone of its term operations (i.e. operations induced by words) is determined by finitely many relations. This solves an open problem posed by Peter Mayr in 2013.

On regularity and the word problem for free idempotent generated semigroups

The category of all idempotent generated semigroups with a prescribed structure $\mathcal{E}$ of their idempotents $E$ (called the biordered set) has an initial object called the free idempotent generated semigroup over $\mathcal{E}$, defined by a presentation over alphabet $E$, and denoted by $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$. Recently, much effort has been put into investigating the structure of semigroups of the form $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$, especially regarding their maximal subgroups. In this paper we take these investigations in a new direction by considering the word problem for $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$. We prove two principal results, one positive and one negative. We show that, for a finite biordered set $\mathcal{E}$, it is decidable whether a given word $w \in E^*$ represents a regular element; if in addition one assumes that all maximal subgroups of $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$ have decidable word problems, then the word problem in $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$ restricted to regular words is decidable. On the other hand, we exhibit a biorder $\mathcal{E}$ arising from a finite idempotent semigroup $S$, such that the word problem for $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$ is undecidable, even though all the maximal subgroups have decidable word problems. This is achieved by relating the word problem of $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$ to the subgroup membership problem in finitely presented groups.

Twisted Brauer monoids

We investigate the structure of the twisted Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n^τ$, comparing and contrasting it to the structure of the (untwisted) Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$. We characterise Green's relations and pre-orders on $\mathcal B_n^τ$, describe the lattice of ideals, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for an ideal to be idempotent-generated. We obtain formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) and (where applicable) the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of each principal ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent-generated, its rank and idempotent rank are equal. As an application of our results, we also describe the idempotent-generated subsemigroup of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is not an ideal) as well as the singular ideal of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is neither principal nor idempotent-generated), and we deduce a result of Maltcev and Mazorchuk that the singular part of the Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$ is idempotent-generated.

Motzkin monoids and partial Brauer monoids

We study the partial Brauer monoid and its planar submonoid, the Motzkin monoid. We conduct a thorough investigation of the structure of both monoids, providing information on normal forms, Green's relations, regularity, ideals, idempotent generation, minimal (idempotent) generating sets, and so on. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which the ideals of these monoids are idempotent-generated. We find formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) of each ideal, and for the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of the idempotent-generated subsemigroup of each ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent-generated, the rank and idempotent rank are equal. Along the way, we obtain a number of results of independent interest, and we demonstrate the utility of the semigroup theoretic approach by applying our results to obtain new proofs of important representation theoretic results concerning the corresponding diagram algebras, the partial (or rook) Brauer algebra and Motzkin algebra.

Semigroups of rectangular matrices under a sandwich operation

Let $\mathcal M_{mn}=\mathcal M_{mn}(\mathbb F)$ denote the set of all $m\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb F$, and fix some $n\times m$ matrix $A\in\mathcal M_{nm}$. An associative operation $\star$ may be defined on $\mathcal M_{mn}$ by $X\star Y=XAY$ for all $X,Y\in\mathcal M_{mn}$, and the resulting \emph{sandwich semigroup} is denoted $\mathcal M_{mn}^A=\mathcal M_{mn}^A(\mathbb F)$. These semigroups are closely related to Munn rings, which are fundamental tools in the representation theory of finite semigroups. In this article, we study $\mathcal M_{mn}^A$ as well as its subsemigroups $\operatorname{Reg}(\mathcal M_{mn}^A)$ and $\mathcal E_{mn}^A$ (consisting of all regular elements and products of idempotents, respectively), as well as the ideals of $\operatorname{Reg}(\mathcal M_{mn}^A)$. Among other results, we: characterise the regular elements, determine Green's relations and preorders, calculate the minimal number of matrices (or idempotent matrices, if applicable) required to generate each semigroup we consider, and classify the isomorphisms between finite sandwich semigroups $\mathcal M_{mn}^A(\mathbb F_1)$ and $\mathcal M_{kl}^B(\mathbb F_2)$. Along the way, we develop a general theory of sandwich semigroups in a suitably defined class of \emph{partial semigroups} related to Ehresmann-style "arrows only" categories, we hope this framework will be useful in studies of sandwich semigroups in other categories. We note that all our results have applications to the \emph{variants} $\mathcal M_n^A$ of the full linear monoid $\mathcal M_n$ (in the case $m=n$), and to certain semigroups of linear transformations of restricted range or kernel (in the case that $\operatorname{rank}(A)$ is equal to one of $m,n$).

The idempotent generated subsemigroup of the Kauffman monoid

We characterise the elements of the (maximum) idempotent generated subsemigroup of the Kauffman monoid in terms of combinatorial data associated to certain normal forms. We also calculate the smallest size of a generating set and idempotent generating set.

Automorphism groups of countable algebraically closed graphs and endomorphisms of the random graph

We establish links between countable algebraically closed graphs and the endomorphisms of the countable universal graph $R$. As a consequence we show that, for any countable graph $Γ$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of the endomorphism monoid of $R$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Γ$. Further structural information about End $R$ is established including that Aut $Γ$ arises in uncountably many ways as a Schützenberger group. Similar results are proved for the countable universal directed graph and the countable universal bipartite graph.

Variants of finite full transformation semigroups

The variant of a semigroup S with respect to an element a in S, denoted S^a, is the semigroup with underlying set S and operation * defined by x*y=xay for x,y in S. In this article, we study variants T_X^a of the full transformation semigroup T_X on a finite set X. We explore the structure of T_X^a as well as its subsemigroups Reg(T_X^a) (consisting of all regular elements) and E_X^a (consisting of all products of idempotents), and the ideals of Reg(T_X^a). Among other results, we calculate the rank and idempotent rank (if applicable) of each semigroup, and (where possible) the number of (idempotent) generating sets of the minimal possible size.

Idempotent generation in the endomorphism monoid of a uniform partition

Denote by $\mathcal T_n$ and $\mathcal S_n$ the full transformation semigroup and the symmetric group on the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, and $\mathcal E_n=\{1\}\cup(\mathcal T_n\setminus \mathcal S_n)$. Let $\mathcal T(X,\mathcal P)$ denote the set of all transformations of the finite set $X$ preserving a uniform partition $\mathcal P$ of $X$ into $m$ subsets of size $n$, where $m,n\geq2$. We enumerate the idempotents of $\mathcal T(X,\mathcal P)$, and describe the subsemigroup $S=\langle E\rangle$ generated by the idempotents $E=E(\mathcal T(X,\mathcal P))$. We show that $S=S_1\cup S_2$, where $S_1$ is a direct product of $m$ copies of $\mathcal E_n$, and $S_2$ is a wreath product of $\mathcal T_n$ with $\mathcal T_m\setminus \mathcal S_m$. We calculate the rank and idempotent rank of $S$, showing that these are equal, and we also classify and enumerate all the idempotent generating sets of minimal size. In doing so, we also obtain new results about arbitrary idempotent generating sets of $\mathcal E_n$.

Idempotent rank in the endomorphism monoid of a non-uniform partition

We calculate the rank and idempotent rank of the semigroup $E(X,P)$ generated by the idempotents of the semigroup $T(X,P)$, which consists of all transformations of the finite set $X$ preserving a non-uniform partition $P$. We also classify and enumerate the idempotent generating sets of this minimal possible size. This extends results of the first two authors in the uniform case.

Enumeration of idempotents in diagram semigroups and algebras

We give a characterisation of the idempotents of the partition monoid, and use this to enumerate the idempotents in the finite partition, Brauer and partial Brauer monoids, giving several formulae and recursions for the number of idempotents in each monoid as well as various $\mathscr R$-, $\mathscr L$- and $\mathscr D$-classes. We also apply our results to determine the number of idempotent basis elements in the finite dimensional partition, Brauer and partial Brauer algebras.

Free idempotent generated semigroups and endomorphism monoids of free $G$-acts

The study of the free idempotent generated semigroup $\mathrm{IG}(E)$ over a biordered set $E$ began with the seminal work of Nambooripad in the 1970s and has seen a recent revival with a number of new approaches, both geometric and combinatorial. Here we study $\mathrm{IG}(E)$ in the case $E$ is the biordered set of a wreath product $G\wr \mathcal{T}_n$, where $G$ is a group and $\mathcal{T}_n$ is the full transformation monoid on $n$ elements. This wreath product is isomorphic to the endomorphism monoid of the free $G$-act $F_n(G)$ on $n$ generators, and this provides us with a convenient approach. We say that the rank of an element of $F_n(G)$ is the minimal number of (free) generators in its image. Let $\varepsilon=\varepsilon^2\in F_n(G).$ For rather straightforward reasons it is known that if $\mathrm{rank}\,\varepsilon =n-1$ (respectively, $n$), then the maximal subgroup of $\mathrm{IG}(E)$ containing $\varepsilon$ is free (respectively, trivial). We show that if $\mathrm{rank}\,\varepsilon =r$ where $1\leq r\leq n-2$, then the maximal subgroup of $\mathrm{IG}(E)$ containing $\varepsilon$ is isomorphic to that in $F_n(G)$ and hence to $G\wr \mathcal{S}_r$, where $\mathcal{S}_r$ is the symmetric group on $r$ elements. We have previously shown this result in the case $ r=1$; however, for higher rank, a more sophisticated approach is needed. Our current proof subsumes the case $r=1$ and thus provides another approach to showing that any group occurs as the maximal subgroup of some $\mathrm{IG}(E)$. On the other hand, varying $r$ again and taking $G$ to be trivial, we obtain an alternative proof of the recent result of Gray and Ruškuc for the biordered set of idempotents of $\mathcal{T}_n.$

Direct products of free groups and free idempotent generated semigroups over bands

For each group G which decomposes into a finitary direct product of free groups of finite rank we construct a regular band B such that the free idempotent generated semigroup over B contains a maximal subgroup isomorphic to G. In particular, there exists a (regular) band B_0 with the property that any idempotent generated semigroup whose biordered set is isomorphic to that of B_0 must have all its subgroups abelian.

Unary enhancements of inherently nonfinitely based semigroups

We exhibit a simple condition under which a finite involutary semigroup whose semigroup reduct is inherently nonfinitely based is also inherently nonfinitely based as a unary semigroup. As applications, we get already known as well as new examples of inherently nonfinitely based involutory semigroups. We also show that for finite regular semigroups, our condition is not only sufficient but also necessary for the property of being inherently nonfinitely based to persist. This leads to an algorithmic description of regular inherently nonfinitely based involutory semigroups.

The Bergman property for endomorphism monoids of some Fra\"ıssé limits

Based on an idea of Y. Péresse and some results of Maltcev, Mitchell and Ruškuc, we present sufficient conditions under which the endomorphism monoid of a countably infinite ultrahomogeneous first-order structure has the Bergman property. This property has played a prominent role both in the theory of infinite permutation groups and, more recently, in semigroup theory. As a byproduct of our considerations, we establish a criterion for a countably infinite ultrahomogeneous structure to be homomorphism-homogeneous.

A note on free idempotent generated semigroups over the full monoid of partial transformations

Recently, Gray and Ruskuc (arXiv:1101.1833) proved that if e is a rank k idempotent transformation of the set {1,...,n} to itself and k<=n-2, then the maximal subgroup of the free idempotent generated semigroup over the full transformation monoid T_n containing e is isomorphic to the symmetric group S_k. We prove that the same holds when T_n is replaced by PT_n, the full monoid of partial transformations on {1,...,n}.
