Character sums over sparse elements of finite fields

We estimate mixed character sums of polynomial values over elements of a finite field $\mathbb F_{q^r}$ with sparse representations in a fixed ordered basis over the subfield $\mathbb F_q$. First we use a combination of the inclusion-exclusion principle with bounds on character sums over linear subspaces to get nontrivial bounds for large $q$. Then we focus on the particular case $q=2$, which is more intricate. The bounds depend on certain natural restrictions. We also provide families of examples for which the conditions of our bounds are fulfilled. In particular, we completely classify all monomials as argument of the additive character for which our bound is applicable. Moreover, we also show that it is applicable for a large family of rational functions, which includes all reciprocal monomials.

Weil Sums over Small Subgroups

We obtain new bounds on short Weil sums over small multiplicative subgroups of prime finite fields which remain nontrivial in the range the classical Weil bound is already trivial. The method we use is a blend of techniques coming from algebraic geometry and additive combinatorics.

Multiplicative Properties of Hilbert Cubes

We obtain upper bounds on the cardinality of Hilbert cubes in finite fields, which avoid large product sets and reciprocals of sum sets. In particular, our results replace recent estimates of N. Hegyvári and P. P. Pach (2020), which appear to be void for all admissible parameters. Our approach is different from that of N. Hegyvári and P. P. Pach and is based on some well-known bounds of double character and exponential sums over arbitrary sets, due to A. A. Karatsuba (1991) and N. G. Moshchevitin (2007), respectively.

Discriminants of Fields Generated by Polynomials of Given Height

We obtain upper bounds for the number of monic irreducible polynomials over $\mathbb Z$ of a fixed degree $n$ and a growing height $H$ for which the field generated by one of its roots has a given discriminant. We approach it via counting square-free parts of polynomial discriminants via two complementing approaches. In turn, this leads to a lower bound on the number of distinct discriminants of fields generated by roots of polynomials of degree $n$ and height at most $H$. We also give an upper bound for the number of trinomials of bounded height with given square-free part of the discriminant, improving previous results of I. E. Shparlinski (2010).

Bounds on bilinear sums of Kloosterman sums

We use some elementary arguments to obtain a new bound on bilinear sums with weighted Kloosterman sums which complements those recently obtained by E. Kowalski, P. Michel and W. Sawin (2020).

On the Glasner property for matrices with polynomial entries

We obtain a new bound in the uniform version of the Glasner property for matrices with polynomial entries, improving that of K. Bulinski and A. Fish (2021). This improvement is based on a more careful examination of complete rational exponential sums with polynomials and can perhaps be used in other questions of the similar spirit.

Additive energy of cyclic matrix groups and character sums with matrix exponential functions

We obtain a nontrivial bound on the number of solutions to the equation $A^{x_1} + A^{x_2} = A^{x_3} + A^{x_4}$, $1 \le x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4 \le τ$, with a fixed $n\times n$ matrix $A$ over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$ of $q$ elements of multiplicative order $τ$. For $n=2$ this equation has been considered by Kurlberg and Rudnick (2001) in their study of quantum ergodicity for linear maps over ${\mathbb F}_q$. Furthermore, its multivariate analogue (also with $n=2$) has been studied by Bourgain (2005). We give applications of our result to obtaining a new bound of additive character sums with a matrix exponential function, which is nontrivial beyond the square-root threshold, and also to a certain additive problem with matrices. Our results are especially strong for ${\rm SL}(n,q)$ matrices with an irreducible characteristic polynomial.

Equations and character sums with matrix powers, Kloosterman sums over small subgroups and quantum ergodicity

We obtain a nontrivial bound on the number of solutions to the equation $$ A^{x_1} + \ldots + A^{x_ν} = A^{x_{ν+1}} + \ldots + A^{x_{2ν}}, \quad 1 \le x_1, \ldots,x_{2ν} \le τ, $$ with a fixed $n\times n$ matrix $A$ over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ of $q$ elements of multiplicative order $τ$. We give applications of our result to obtaining a new bound of additive character sums with a matrix exponential function, which is nontrivial beyond the square-root threshold. For $n=2$ this equation has been considered by Kurlberg and Rudnick (2001) (for $ν=2$) and Bourgain (2005) (for large $ν$) in their study of quantum ergodicity for linear maps over residue rings. Here we use a new approach to improve their results. We also obtain a bound on Kloosterman sums over small subgroups, of size below the square-root threshold.

Additive energy and a large sieve inequality for sparse sequences

We consider the large sieve inequality for sparse sequences of moduli and give a general result depending on the additive energy (both symmetric and asymmetric) of the sequence of moduli. For example, in the case of monomials $f(X) = X^k$ this allows us to improve, in some ranges of the parameters, the previous bounds of S. Baier and L. Zhao (2005), K.~Halupczok (2012, 2015, 2018) and M.~Munsch (2020). We also consider moduli defined by polynomials $f(X) \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$, Piatetski-Shapiro sequences and general convex sequences. We then apply our results to obtain a version of the Bombieri--Vinogradov theorem with Piatetski-Shapiro moduli improving the level of distribution of R.~C.~Baker (2014).

Large Weyl sums and Hausdorff dimension

We obtain the exact value of the Hausdorff dimension of the set of coefficients of Gauss sums which for a given $α\in (1/2,1)$ achieve the order at least $N^α$ for infinitely many sum lengths $N$. For Weyl sums with polynomials of degree $d\ge 3$ we obtain a new upper bound on the Hausdorff dimension of the set of polynomial coefficients corresponding to large values of Weyl sums. Our methods also work for monomial sums, match the previously known lower bounds, just giving exact value for the corresponding Hausdorff dimension when $α$ is close to $1$. We also obtain a nearly tight bound in a similar question with arbitrary integer sequences of polynomial growth.

Bounds on the Norms of Maximal Operators on Weyl Sums

We obtain new estimates on the maximal operator applied to the Weyl sums. We also consider the quadratic case (that is, Gauss sums) in more details. In wide ranges of parameters our estimates are optimal and match lower bounds. Our approach is based on a combination of ideas of Baker (2021) and Chen and Shparlinski (2020).

On digits of Mersenne numbers

Motivated by recently developed interest to the distribution of $q$-ary digits of Mersenne numbers $M_p = 2^p-1$, where $p$ is prime, we estimate rational exponential sums with $M_p$, $p \leq X$, modulo a large power of a fixed odd prime $q$. In turn this immediately implies the normality of strings of $q$-ary digits amongst about $(\log X)^{3/2+o(1)}$ rightmost digits of $M_p$, $p \leq X$. Previous results imply this only for about $(\log X)^{1+o(1)}$ rightmost digits.

Weyl sums over integers with digital restrictions

We estimate Weyl sums over the integers with sum of binary digits either fixed or restricted by some congruence condition. In our proofs we use ideas that go back to a paper by Banks, Conflitti and the first author (2002). Moreover, we apply the "main conjecture" on the Vinogradov mean value theorem which has been established by Bourgain, Demeter and Guth (2016) as well as by Wooley (2016, 2019). We use our result to give an estimate of the discrepancy of point sets that are defined by the values of polynomials at arguments having the sum of binary digits restricted in different ways.

Perfect powers in value sets and orbits of polynomials

We show the finiteness of perfect powers in orbits of polynomial dynamical systems over an algebraic number field. We also obtain similar results for perfect powers represented by ratios of consecutive elements in orbits. Assuming the $abc$-Conjecture for number fields, we obtain a finiteness result for powers in ratios of arbitrary elements in orbits.

On sparsity of representations of polynomials as linear combinations of exponential functions

Given an integer $g$ and also some given integers $m$ (sufficiently large) and $c_1,\dots, c_m$, we show that the number of all non-negative integers $n\le M$ with the property that there exist non-negative integers $k_1,\dots, k_m$ such that $$n^2=\sum_{i=1}^m c_i g^{k_i}$$ is $o\left(\left(\log M \right)^{m-1/2}\right)$. We also obtain a similar bound when dealing with more general inequalities $$\left|Q(n)-\sum_{i=1}^m c_iλ^{k_i}\right|\le B,$$ where $Q\in {\mathbb C}[X]$ and also $λ\in {\mathbb C}$ (while $B$ is a real number).

A sparsity result for the Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture in positive characteristic

We prove a quantitative partial result in support of the Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture (also known as the DML conjecture) in positive characteristic. More precisely, we show the following: given a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, given a semiabelian variety $X$ defined over a finite subfield of $K$ and endowed with a regular self-map $Φ:X \longrightarrow X$ defined over $K$, given a point $α\in X(K)$ and a subvariety $V\subseteq X$, then the set of all non-negative integers $n$ such that $Φ^n(α)\in V(K)$ is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions along with a subset $S$ with the property that there exists a positive real number $A$ (depending only on $N$, $Φ$, $α$, $V$) such that for each positive integer $M$, we have $$\#\left\{n\in S\colon~ n\le M\right\}\le A\cdot \left(1+\log M\right)^{\dim V}.$$

Two-dimensional Weyl sums failing square-root cancellation along lines

We show that a certain two-dimensional family of Weyl sums of length $P$ takes values as large as $P^{3/4 + o(1)}$ on almost all linear slices of the unit torus, contradicting a widely held expectation that Weyl sums should exhibit square-root cancellation on generic subvarieties of the unit torus. This is an extension of a result of J. Brandes, S. T. Parsell, C. Poulias, G. Shakan and R. C. Vaughan (2020) from quadratic and cubic monomials to general polynomials of arbitrary degree. The new ingredients of our approach are the classical results of E. Bombieri (1966) on exponential sums along a curve and R. J. Duffin and A. C. Schaeffer (1941) on Diophantine approximations by rational numbers with prime denominators.
