The Hessian Sobolev inequality and its extensions

The Hessian Sobolev inequality of X.-J. Wang, and the Hessian Poincaré inequalities of Trudinger and Wang are fundamental to differential and conformal geometry, and geometric PDE. These remarkable inequalities were originally established via gradient flow methods. In this paper, direct elliptic proofs are given, and extensions to trace inequalities with general measures in place of Lebesgue measure are obtained. The new techniques rely on global estimates of solutions to Hessian equations in terms of Wolff's potentials, and duality arguments making use of a non-commutative inner product on the cone of k-convex functions.

Finite energy solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations with sub-natural growth terms

We study finite energy solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations of the type $$ -Δ_pu=σ\, u^q \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n,$$ where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian, $p>1$, and $σ$ is a nonnegative function (or measure) on $\mathbb{R}^n$, in the case $0<q < p-1$ ( below the "natural growth" rate $q=p-1$ ). We give an explicit necessary and sufficient condition on $σ$ which ensures that there exists a solution $u$ in the homogeneous Sobolev space $L_0^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and prove its uniqueness. Among our main tools are integral inequalities closely associated with this problem, and Wolff potential estimates used to obtain sharp bounds of solutions. More general quasilinear equations with the $\mathcal{A}$-Laplacian $ \text{div} \mathcal{A}(x,\nabla \cdot)$ in place of $Δ_p$ are considered as well.

Pointwise Bounds and Blow-up for Systems of Semilinear Elliptic Inequalities at an Isolated Singularity via Nonlinear Potential Estimates

We study the behavior near the origin of $C^2$ positive solutions $u(x)$ and $v(x)$ of the system $0\leq -Δu\leq f(v)$ $0\leq -Δv\leq g(u)$ in $B_1(0)\backslash\{0\}$ where $f,g:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$ are continuous functions. We provide optimal conditions on $f$ and $g$ at $\infty$ such that solutions of this system satisfy pointwise bounds near the origin. In dimension $n=2$ we show that this property holds if $\log^+ f$ or $\log^+g$ grow at most linearly at infinity. In dimension $n\geq 3$ and under the assumption $f(t)=O(t^λ)$, $g(t)=O(t^σ)$ as $t\to \infty$, ($λ, σ\geq 0$), we obtain a new critical curve that optimally describes the existence of such pointwise bounds. Our approach relies in part on sharp estimates of nonlinear potentials which appear naturally in this context.

Quasilinear elliptic equations and weighted Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities with distributional weights

We introduce a class of weak solutions to the quasilinear equation $-Δ_p u = σ|u|^{p-2}u$ in an open set $Ω\subset\mathbf{R}^n$. Here $p>1$, and $Δ_p u$ is the $p$-Laplacian operator. Our notion of solution is tailored to general distributional coefficients $σ$ satisfying a certain weighted Sobolev-Poincare inequality. We also study weak solutions of the closely related equation $-Δ_p v = (p-1)|\nabla v|^p + σ$, under the same conditions on $σ$. Our results for this latter equation will allow us to characterize the class of distributions $σ$ which satisfy the Sobolev-Poincare inequality, thereby extending earlier results on the form boundedness problem for the Schrödinger operator to $p\neq 2$.

Radial fractional Laplace operators and Hessian inequalities

In this paper we deduce a formula for the fractional Laplace operator $(-Δ)^{s}$ on radially symmetric functions useful for some applications. We give a criterion of subharmonicity associated with $(-Δ)^{s}$, and apply it to a problem related to the Hessian inequality of Sobolev type: $$\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}|(-Δ)^{\frac{k}{k+1}} u|^{k+1} dx \le C \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} - u \, F_k[u] \, dx, $$ where $F_k$ is the $k$-Hessian operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $1\le k < \frac{n}{2}$, under some restrictions on a $k$-convex function $u$. In particular, we show that the class of $u$ for which the above inequality was established in \cite{FFV} contains the extremal functions for the Hessian Sobolev inequality of X.-J. Wang \cite{W1}. This is proved using logarithmic convexity of the Gaussian ratio of hypergeometric functions which might be of independent interest.

Existence and regularity of positive solutions to elliptic equations of Schrödinger type

We prove the existence of positive solutions with optimal local regularity to homogeneous elliptic equations of Schrödinger type, under only a form boundedness assumption on $σ\in D'(Ω)$ and ellipticity assumption on $\mathcal{A}\in L^\infty(Ω)^{n\times n}$, for an arbitrary open set $Ω\subseteq \mathbf{R}^n$. We demonstrate that there is a two way correspondence between the form boundedness and the existence of positive solutions to this equation, as well as weak solutions to certain elliptic equations with quadratic nonlinearity in the gradient. As a consequence, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for both the form-boundedness (with a sharp upper form bound) and the positivity of the quadratic form of the Schrödinger type operator with arbitrary distributional potential $σ\in D'(Ω)$, and give examples clarifying the relationship between these two properties.

Quasilinear equations with source terms on Carnot groups

In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to quasilinear equations of Lane--Emden type with measure data on a Carnot group $\mathbb G$ of arbitrary step. The quasilinear part involves operators of the $p$-Laplacian type $Δ_{\mathbb G,\,p}\,$, $1<p<\infty$. These results are based on new a priori estimates of solutions in terms of nonlinear potentials of Th. Wolff's type. As a consequence, we characterize completely removable singularities, and prove a Liouville type theorem for supersolutions of quasilinear equations with source terms which has been known only for equations involving the sub-Laplacian ($p=2$) on the Heisenberg group.

Local and global behaviour of nonlinear equations with natural growth terms

This paper concerns a study of the pointwise behaviour of positive solutions to certain quasi-linear elliptic equations with natural growth terms, under minimal regularity assumptions on the underlying coefficients. Our primary results consist of optimal pointwise estimates for positive solutions of such equations in terms of two local Wolff's potentials.

On $L^p$--$L^q$ trace inequalities

We give necessary and sufficient conditions in order that inequalities of the type $$ \| T_K f\|_{L^q(dμ)}\leq C \|f\|_{L^p(dσ)}, \qquad f \in L^p(dσ), $$ hold for a class of integral operators $T_K f(x) = \int_{R^n} K(x, y) f(y) d σ(y)$ with nonnegative kernels, and measures $d μ$ and $dσ$ on $\R^n$, in the case where $p>q>0$ and $p>1$. An important model is provided by the dyadic integral operator with kernel $K_{\mathcal D}(x, y) \sum_{Q\in{\mathcal D}} K(Q) χ_Q(x) χ_Q(y)$, where $\mathcal D=\{Q\}$ is the family of all dyadic cubes in $\R^n$, and $K(Q)$ are arbitrary nonnegative constants associated with $Q \in{\mathcal D}$. The corresponding continuous versions are deduced from their dyadic counterparts. In particular, we show that, for the convolution operator $T_k f = k\star f$ with positive radially decreasing kernel $k(|x-y|)$, the trace inequality $$ \| T_k f\|_{L^q(dμ)}\leq C \|f\|_{L^p(d x)}, \qquad f \in L^p(dx), $$ holds if and only if ${\mathcal W}_{k}[μ] \in L^s (dμ)$, where $s = {\frac{q(p-1)}{p-q}}$. Here ${\mathcal W}_{k}[μ]$ is a nonlinear Wolff potential defined by ${\mathcal W}_{k}[μ](x)=\int_0^{+\infty} k(r) \bar{k}(r)^{\frac 1 {p-1}} μ(B(x,r))^{\frac 1{p-1}} r^{n-1} dr,$ and $\bar{k}(r)=\frac1{r^n}\int_0^r k(t) t^{n-1} dt$. Analogous inequalities for $1\le q < p$ were characterized earlier by the authors using a different method which is not applicable when $q<1$.

Quasilinear and Hessian equations of Lane-Emden type

The existence problem is solved, and global pointwise estimates of solutions are obtained for quasilinear and Hessian equations of Lane-Emden type, including the following two model problems: $ -Δ_p u = u^q + μ$ and $F_k[-u] = u^q + μ$, $u > 0$, on $R^n$, or on a bounded domain $Ω$. Here $Δ_p$ is the p-Laplacian, and $F_k[u]$ is the $k$-Hessian defined as the sum of $k\times k$ principal minors of the Hessian matrix $D^2 u$; $μ$ is a nonnegative measurable function (or measure) on $Ω$. The solvability of these classes of equations in the renormalized (entropy) or viscosity sense has been an open problem even for good data $μ\in L^s (Ω)$, $s>1$. Such results are deduced from our existence criteria with the sharp exponents $s = n(q-p+1)/pq$ for the first equation, and $s = n(q-k)/2kq$ for the second one. Furthermore, a complete characterization of removable singularities is given. Our methods are based on systematic use of Wolff's potentials, dyadic models, and nonlinear trace inequalities. We make use of recent advances in potential theory and PDE due to Kilpelainen and Maly, Trudinger and Wang, and Labutin. This enables us to treat singular solutions, nonlocal operators, and distributed singularities, and develop the theory simultaneously for quasilinear equations and equations of Monge-Ampere type.
