Light tuning of selective Bragg diffraction of the oblique helicoidal cholesteric

It is known that the oblique helicoidal cholesteric structure (Ch$_{OH}$), which is formed in alternating electrical field applied to the chiral nematic phase (N*) at temperatures above the chiral twist-bend nematic phase (N*$_{tb}$), can show selective Bragg reflection in the visible range of spectrum. In this work, we study the effects of AC electric field at different frequencies, as well as UV irradiation on the Bragg reflection of Ch$_{OH}$ structure of the N*$_{tb}$-forming mixture containing a light sensitive chiral azo-compound. It has been found that Ch$_{OH}$ structure shows two sequential states in the tuning of selective Bragg reflection at high and low electrical fields.

Oblique helicoidal state of the twist-bend nematic doped by chiral azo-compound

A novel light-sensitive chiral dopant ChD-3816 (an azo compound containing 4-hexanoyloxyphenyl and 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexylbenzoate moieties) was used for inducing helical twisting in Ntb-forming mixtures of CB7CB/CB6OCB with 5CB added to decrease the phase transition temperatures. The effects of ChD-3816 upon phase transition temperatures, as well as effects of its concentration on the measured values of helical twisting were determined. Most of the measured parameters could be varied due to light-induced trans-cis isomerization of ChD-3816. Under electric field, selective reflection spectra in the visible range were obtained for the emerging ChOH structures, with the wavelengths controllable both by electric field and appropriate UV irradiation. Possible applications for dynamic formation of contrast images are discussed.

Twist-bend nematics and heliconical cholesterics: a physico-chemical analysis of phase transitions and related specific properties

Certain nematic liquid crystals, e.g., those formed by banana-shaped molecules, can exhibit a low-temperature twist-bend nematic (Ntb) phase. Upon addition of chiral dopants, a chiral version of the twist-bend phase (N*tb) can be observed below the conventional chiral nematic (N*) phase, while under electric field the N* phase is transformed into a specific state known as "heliconical cholesteric". In this work, we have studied the well-known Ntb-forming system CB7CB:CB6OCB with addition of 5CB and chiral dopants (ChD) using optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and measurements of temperature-dependent optical transmission using optical microscopy. Effects of 5CB and different chiral dopants (of steroid or non-steroid nature) upon thermal stability of Ntb phase were analyzed, and selective reflection in the visible range could be observed in the N* phase with a sufficiently high ChD content. As a peculiar feature, sharp unwinding of the cholesteric helix was observed at lower temperatures when approaching the N*tb phase, which appears to be similar to the helix unwinding close to the smectic-A transition.

The alignment of nematic liquid crystal by the Ti layer processed by nonlinear laser lithography

It is well known that the alignment of liquid crystals can be realized by rubbing or photoalignment technologies. Recently nonlinear laser lithography was introduced as a fast, relatively low-cost method for large area nano-grating fabrication based on laser-induced periodic surface structuring. In this letter for the first time the usage of the nonlinear laser lithography as a perspective method of the alignment of nematics was presented. By nonlinear laser lithography, microgrooves with about 1 μm period were formed on Ti layer. The microstructured Ti layer was coated with oxidianiline-polyimide film with annealing of the polymer followed without any further processing. Aligning properties of microstructured Ti layers were examined with combined twist LC cell. The dependencies of the twist angle of LC cells and azimuthal anchoring energy of layers on scanning speed and power of laser beam during processing of the Ti layer were the focus of our studies as well. The maximum azimuthal anchoring energy, obtained for pure microstructured Ti layer, is comparable with photoalignment technology. It was found that the deposition of polyimide film on microstructured Ti layer leads to the gain effect of the azimuthal anchoring energy. Also, AFM study of aligning surfaces was carried out.

Electro- and photoswitching of undulation structures in planar cholesteric layers aligned by a polyimide film possessing various values of the anchoring energy

The base for this manuscript was laid down by the studies carried out in the article by Senyuk B, et. al. Proceedings of SPIE. 2005; 5936: 59360W-1-9. In the present manuscript, a planar layer of the photosensitive cholesteric, based on the chiral dopant 2-(4'-phenylbenzylidene)-p-menthane-3-one dissolved in the nematic E7, under the alternating electric field was explored. In particular, the influence of UV exposure and the value of the azimuthal anchoring energy on electro- and photoswitching of undulation instabilities was considered. Due to the decrease in a ratio between the LC cell thickness d and the cholesteric helical pitch P, different types of undulations, observed under the electrical field, were switched by UV exposure. The change in the ratio d/P was realized owing to the unwinding of the photosensitive cholesteric helix during UV exposure in the LC cell with a fixed thickness d. Sequential transitions of types of the undulations from 2D to two 1D structures (1D|| and 1D_) were achieved. The undulation structure 1D|| with a controlled period of a grating in electric field was examined. Dependencies of jumps of the period and the diffraction efficiency of a photosensitive cholesteric grating on the anchoring energy of alignment layers were analyzed.
