Cylindrical surface plasmon mode coupling as a three-dimensional Kaluza- Klein theory

Cylindrical surface plasmon (CSP) mode coupling in a nanowire or a nanochannel is described in terms of three-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory in which the compactified third dimension is considered to be the angular coordinate of the metal cylinder. Higher (n>0) CSP modes are shown to posses a quantized effective charge proportional to their angular momentum n. In a nanowire these slow moving charges exhibit strong long-range interaction via fast massless CSPs with zero angular momentum (n=0). Such a mode-coupling theory may be used in description of nonlinear optics of cylindrical nanowires and nanochannels (for example, in single-photon tunneling effect), and may be further extended to describe interaction of electrons with nonzero angular momenta in thin gold wires and carbon nanotubes

Optical second harmonic generation near a black hole horizon as possible source of experimental information on quantum gravitational effects

Optical second harmonic generation near a black hole horizon is suggested as a source of experimental information on quantum gravitational effects. While absent in the framework of general relativity, second harmonic generation appears in the toy models of sonic and electromagnetic black holes, where spatial dispersion at high frequencies for waves boosted towards the horizon is introduced. Localization effects in the light scattering from random fluctuations of matter fields and space-time metric near the black hole horizon produce a pronounced peak in the angular distribution of second harmonics of light in the direction normal to the horizon. Such second harmonic light has the best chances to escape the vicinity of the black hole. This phenomenon is similar to the well-known strong enhancement of diffuse second harmonic emission from a randomly rough metal surface in the direction normal to the surface.

Fractal extra dimension in Kaluza-Klein theory

Kaluza-Klein theory in which the geometry of an additional dimension is fractal has been considered. In such a theory the mass of an elementary electric charge appears to be many orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck mass, and the "tower" of masses which correspond to higher integer charges becomes aperiodic.

Electric field induced strong localization of electrons on solid hydrogen surface: possible applications to quantum computing

Two-dimensional electron system on the liquid helium surface is one of the leading candidates for constructing large analog quantum computers (P.M. Platzman and M.I. Dykman, Science 284, 1967 (1999)). Similar electron systems on the surfaces of solid hydrogen or solid neon may have some important advantages with respect to electrons on liquid helium in quantum computing applications, such as larger state separation $ΔE$, absence of propagating capillary waves (or ripplons), smaller vapor pressure, etc. As a result, it may operate at higher temperatures. Surface roughness is the main hurdle to overcome in building a realistic quantum computer using these states. Electric field induced strong localization of surface electrons is shown to be a convenient tool to characterize surface roughness.

On the possibility to supercool molecular hydrogen down to superfluid transition

Recent calculations by Vorobev and Malyshenko (JETP Letters, 71, 39, 2000) show that molecular hydrogen may stay liquid and superfluid in strong electric fields of the order of $4\times 10^7 V/cm$. I demonstrate that strong local electric fields of similar magnitude exist beneath a two-dimensional layer of electrons localized in the image potential above the surface of solid hydrogen. Even stronger local fields exist around charged particles (ions or electrons) if surface or bulk of a solid hydrogen crystal is statically charged. Measurements of the frequency shift of the $1 \to 2$ photoresonance transition in the spectrum of two-dimensional layer of electrons above positively or negatively charged solid hydrogen surface performed in the temperature range 7 - 13.8 K support the prediction of electric field induced surface melting. The range of surface charge density necessary to stabilize the liquid phase of molecular hydrogen at the temperature of superfluid transition is estimated.

Giant Enhancement of Surface Second Harmonic Generation in BaTiO_3 due to Photorefractive Surface Wave Excitation

We report observation of strongly enhanced surface SHG in BaTiO_3 due to excitation of a photorefractive surface electromagnetic wave. Surface SH intensity may reach 10^{-2} of the incident fundamental light intensity. Angular, crystal orientation and polarization dependencies of this SHG are presented. Possible applications of this effect in nonlinear surface spectroscopy are discussed.
