Algebraic de Rham theorem and Baker-Akhiezer function

For the case of algebraic curves - compact Riemann surfaces - it is shown that de Rham cohomology group $H^{1}_{\mathrm{dR}}(X,\mathbb{C})$ of a genus $g$ Riemann surface $X$ has a natural structure of a symplectic vector space. Every choice of a non-special effective divisor $D$ of degree $g$ on $X$ defines a symplectic basis of $H^{1}_{\mathrm{dR}}(X,\mathbb{C})$, consisting of holomorphic differentials and differentials of the second kind with poles on $D$. This result, the algebraic de Rham theorem, is used to describe the tangent space to Picard and Jacobian varieties of $X$ in terms of differentials of the second kind, and to define a natural vector fields on the Jacobian of $X$ that move points of the divisor $D$. In terms of the Lax formalism on algebraic curves, these vector fields correspond to the Dubrovin equations in the theory of integrable systems, and the Baker-Akhierzer function is naturally obtained by the integration along the integral curves.

Abelian pole systems and Riemann-Schottky type systems

In this survey of works on a characterization of Jacobians and Prym varieties among indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties via the soliton theory we focus on a certain circle of ideas and methods which show that the characterization of Jacobians as ppav whose Kummer variety admits a trisecant line and the Pryms as ppav whose Kummer variety admits a pair of symmetric quadrisecants can be seen as an abelian version of pole systems arising in the theory of elliptic solutions to the basic soliton hierarchies. We present also recent results in this direction on the characterization of Jacobians of curves with involution, which were motivated by the theory of two-dimensional integrable hierarchies with symmetries.

Novikov-Veselov Symmetries of the Two-Dimensional $O(N)$ Sigma Model

We show that Novikov-Veselov hierarchy provides a complete family of commuting symmetries of two-dimensional $O(N)$ sigma model. In the first part of the paper we use these symmetries to prove that the Fermi spectral curve for the double-periodic sigma model is algebraic. Thus, our previous construction of the complexified harmonic maps in the case of irreducible Fermi curves is complete. In the second part of the paper we generalize our construction to the case of reducible Fermi curves and show that it gives the conformal harmonic maps to even-dimensional spheres. Remarkably, the solutions are parameterized by spectral curves of turning points of the elliptic Calogero-Moser system.

Characterizing Jacobians of algebraic curves with involution

We give two characterizations of Jacobians of curves with involution having fixed points in the framework of two particular cases of Welter's trisecant conjecture. The geometric form of each of these characterizations is the statement that such Jacobians are exactly those containing a shifted Abelian subvariety whose image under the Kummer map is orthogonal to an explicitly given vector.

Towards Lefschetz thimbles in Sigma models, I

We study two dimensional path integral Lefschetz thimbles, i.e. the possible path integration contours. Specifically, in the examples of the $O(N)$ and ${\bf CP}^{N-1}$ models, we find a large class of complex critical points of the sigma model actions which are relevant for the theory in finite volume at finite temperature, with various chemical potentials corresponding to the symmetries of the models. In this paper we discuss the case of the $O(2m)$ and the ${\bf CP}^{N-1}$ models in the sector of zero instanton charge, as well as some solutions of the $O(2m+1)$ model. The ${\bf CP}^{N-1}$-model for all instanton charges and a more general class of solutions of the $O(N)$-model with odd $N$ will be discussed in the forthcoming paper.

Real-normalized differentials with a single order $2$ pole

A meromorphic differential on a Riemann surface is said to be {\it real-normalized} if all its periods are real. Real-normalized differentials on Riemann surfaces of given genus with prescribed orders of their poles form real orbifolds whose topology is closely related to that of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked points. Our goal is to develop tools to study this topology. We propose a combinatorial model for the real normalized differentials with a single order $2$ pole and use it to analyze the corresponding absolute period foliation.

Incarnations of XXX $\widehat{\frak{sl}_N}$ Bethe ansatz equations and integrable hierarchies

We consider the space of solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations of the $\widehat{\frak{sl}_N}$ XXX quantum integrable model, associated with the trivial representation of $\widehat{\frak{sl}_N}$. We construct a family of commuting flows on this space and identify the flows with the flows of coherent rational Ruijesenaars-Schneider systems. For that we develop in full generality the spectral transform for the rational Ruijesenaars-Schneider system.

Real-normalized differentials: limits on stable curves

We study the behavior of real-normalized (RN) meromorphic differentials on Riemann surfaces under degeneration. We determine all possible limits of RN differentials in degenerating sequences of smooth curves, and describe the limit in terms of solutions of the corresponding Kirchhoff problem. We further show that the limit of zeroes of RN differentials is the set of zeroes of a twisted meromorphic RN differential, which we explicitly construct. Our main new tool is an explicit solution of the jump problem on Riemann surfaces in plumbing coordinates, by using the Cauchy kernel on the normalization of the nodal curve. Since this kernel does not depend on plumbing coordinates, we are able to approximate the RN differential on a smooth plumbed curve by a collection of meromorphic differentials on the irreducible components of a stable curve, with an explicit bound on the precision of such approximation. This allows us to also study these approximating differentials at suitable scales, so that the limit under degeneration is not identically zero. These methods can be applied more generally to study degenerations of differentials on Riemann surfaces satisfying various conditions.

Real-normalized differentials and the elliptic Calogero-Moser system

In our recent works we have used meromorphic differentials on Riemann surfaces all of whose periods are real to study the geometry of the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. In this paper we survey the relevant constructions and show how they are related to and motivated by the spectral theory of the elliptic Calogero-Moser integrable system.

A note on critical points of integrals of soliton equations

We consider the problem of extending the integrals of motion of soliton equations to the space of all finite-gap solutions. We consider the critical points of these integrals on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces with marked points and jets of local coordinates. We show that the solutions of the corresponding variational problem have an explicit description in terms of real-normalized differentials on the spectral curve. Such conditions have previously appeared in a number of problems of mathematical physics.

The universal Whitham hierarchy and the geometry of the moduli space of pointed Riemann surfaces

We show that certain structures and constructions of the Whitham theory, an essential part of the perturbation theory of soliton equations, can be instrumental in understanding the geometry of the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked points. We use the ideas of the Whitham theory to define local coordinates and construct foliations on the moduli spaces. We use these constructions to give a new proof of the Diaz' bound on the dimension of complete subvarieties of the moduli spaces. Geometrically, we study the properties of meromorphic differentials with real periods, and their degenerations.

Vector bundles and Lax equations on algebraic curves

The Hamiltonian theory of zero-curvature equations with spectral parameter on an arbitrary compact Riemann surface is constructed. It is shown that the equations can be seen as commuting flows of an infinite-dimensional field generalization of the Hitchin system. The field analog of the elliptic Calogero-Moser system is proposed. An explicit parameterization of Hitchin system based on the Tyurin parameters for stable holomorphic vector bundles on algebraic curves is obtained.
