G-birationally rigid cubic threefolds

We classify pairs $(X,G)$ consisting of a (possibly singular) cubic threefold $X\subset\mathbb{P}^4$ and a finite subgroup $G\subset\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ such that $X$ is $G$-birationally rigid, i.e., $X$ is a $G$-Mori fiber space (over a point), and $X$ is not $G$-birational to any $G$-Mori fibre space that is not $G$-biregular to $X$.

Local inequalities for $cA_k$ singularities

We generalize an intersection-theoretic local inequality of Fulton-Lazarsfeld to weighted blowups. As a consequence, we obtain the $4n^2/(k+1)$-inequality for isolated $cA_k$ singularities, an analogue of the $4 n^2$-inequality for smooth points. We use this to prove birational rigidity of many families of Fano 3-fold weighted complete intersections with terminal quotient singularities and isolated $cA_k$ singularities, including sextic double solids with $cA_1$ and ordinary $cA_2$ points.

K-stability of Casagrande-Druel varieties

We introduce a new subclass of Fano varieties (Casagrande-Druel varieties), that are $n$-dimensional varieties constructed from Fano double covers of dimension $n-1$. We conjecture that a Casagrande-Druel variety is K-polystable if the double cover and its base space are K-polystable. We prove this for smoothable Casagrande-Druel threefolds, and for Casagrande-Druel varieties constructed from double covers of $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ ramified over smooth hypersurfaces of degree $2d$ with $n>d>\frac{n}{2}>1$. As an application, we describe the connected components of the K-moduli space parametrizing smoothable K-polystable Fano threefolds in the families 3.9 and 4.2 in the Mori-Mukai classification.

$2 n^2$-inequality for $cA_1$ points and applications to birational rigidity

The $4 n^2$-inequality for smooth points plays an important role in the proofs of birational (super)rigidity. The main aim of this paper is to generalize such an inequality to terminal singular points of type $cA_1$, and obtain a $2 n^2$-inequality for $cA_1$ points. As applications, we prove birational (super)rigidity of sextic double solids, many other prime Fano 3-fold weighted complete intersections, and del Pezzo fibrations of degree $1$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ satisfying the $K^2$-condition, all of which have at most terminal $cA_1$ singularities and terminal quotient singularities. These give first examples of birationally (super)rigid Fano 3-folds and del Pezzo fibrations admitting a $cA_1$ point which is not an ordinary double point.

Families of embeddings of the alternating group of rank 5 into the Cremona group

I study embeddings of alternating group of rank five into the Cremona group of rank three. I find all embeddings induced by A_5-del Pezzo fibrations and I study their conjugacy. As an application, I show that there is a series of continuous families of pairwise non-conjugate embeddings of alternating group of rank five into Cr$_3(\mathbb{C})$.

Stability of fibrations over one-dimensional bases

We introduce and study a new notion of stability for varieties fibered over curves, motivated by Koll\'ar's stability for homogeneous polynomials with integral coefficients. We develop tools to study geometric properties of stable birational models of fibrations whose fibers are complete intersections in weighted projective spaces. As an application, we prove the existence of standard models of threefold degree one and two del Pezzo fibrations, settling a conjecture of Corti from 1996.

Understanding Leakage Currents through $Al_2O_3$ on $SrTiO_3$

Leakage currents through insulators received continuous attention for decades, owing to their importance for a wide range of technologies, and interest in their fundamental mechanisms. This work investigates the leakage currents through atomic layer deposited (ALD) $Al_2O_3$, grown on $SrTiO_3$. This combination is not only a key building block of oxide electronics, but also a clean system for studying the leakage mechanisms without interfacial layers that form on most of the conventional bottom electrodes. We show how tiny differences in the deposition process can have a dramatic effect on the leakage behavior. Detailed analysis of the leakage behavior rules out Fowler-Nordheim tunneling (FNT) and thermionic emission, and leaves the trap-related mechanisms of trap-assisted tunneling (TAT) and Poole-Frenkel as the likely mechanisms. After annealing the sample in air, the currents are reduced, which is ascribed to transition from trap-based mechanism to FNT, due to the elimination of the traps. The dramatic role of the assumptions regarding the flat-band voltage used for analysis is critically discussed, and the sensitivity of the extracted parameters on this magnitude is quantitatively described. We show that field effect devices based on structures similar to those described here, should be able to modulate $>10^{13} cm^{-2}$ electrons. These results provide general guidelines for reducing and analyzing leakage currents in insulators, and highlight some of the possible approaches and pitfalls in their analysis.

Birational rigidity of orbifold degree 2 del Pezzo fibrations

Varieties fibered into del Pezzo surfaces form a class of possible outputs of the minimal model program. It is known that del Pezzo fibrations of degrees $1$ and $2$ over the projective line with smooth total space satisfying the so-called $K^2$-condition are birationally rigid: their Mori fibre space structure is unique. This implies that they are not birational to any Fano varieties, conic bundles or other del Pezzo fibrations. In particular, they are irrational. The families of del Pezzo fibrations with smooth total space of degree $2$ are rather special, as for "most" families a general del Pezzo fibration has the simplest orbifold singularities. We prove that orbifold del Pezzo fibrations of degree $2$ over the projective line satisfying explicit generality conditions as well as a generalised $K^2$-condition are birationally rigid.

Stable rationality of del Pezzo fibrations of low degree over projective spaces

The main aim of this article is to show that a very general 3-dimensional del Pezzo fibration of degree 1,2,3 is not stably rational except for a del Pezzo fibration of degree 3 belonging to explicitly described 2 families. Higher dimensional generalizations are also discussed and we prove that a very general del Pezzo fibration of degree 1,2,3 defined over the projective space is not stably rational provided that the anticanonical divisor is not ample.

Birational geometry of del Pezzo fibrations with terminal quotient singularities

Del Pezzo fibrations appear as minimal models of rationally connected varieties. The rationality of smooth del Pezzo fibrations is a well studied question but smooth fibrations are not dense in moduli. Little is known about the rationality of the singular models. We prove birational rigidity, hence non-rationality, of del Pezzo fibrations with simple non-Gorenstein singularities satisfying the famous $K^2$-condition. We then apply this result to study embeddings of $\operatorname{PSL}_2(7)$ into the Cremona group.

Rationally connected non-Fano type varieties

Varieties of Fano type are very well behaved with respect to MMP, and they are known to be rationally connected. We study the relation between classes of rationally connected varieties and varieties of Fano type. We give examples of rationally connected varieties of dimension $\geqslant 3$ which are not birationally equivalent to Fano type varieties, thereby answering the question of Cascini and Gongyo.
