A look on equations describing pseudospherical surfaces

We revisit the notion of equations describing pseudospherical surfaces, starting from the works by Sasaki, whose roots were influenced by the AKNS system, the works by Chern and Tenenblat, until current research topics in the field relating to Cauchy problems involving these equations and their geometric consequences.

Global and blow-up solutions for a non-local integrable equation with applications to geometry

We establish the global existence of higher-order Sobolev solutions for a non-local integrable evolution equation arising in the study of pseudospherical surfaces and non-linear wave propagation. Under a natural assumption on the initial momentum, we prove that the solution remains globally regular in arbitrary finite-order Sobolev spaces. The proof relies on an inductive energy method involving a hierarchy of functional estimates and applies to both the periodic and non-periodic settings. We determine a criterion for the existence of blow-up solutions. The consequences of these qualitative properties of the solutions on Riemannian surfaces determined by the solutions of the equation are investigated.

Intrinsic geometry and wave-breaking phenomena in solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation

Pseudospherical surfaces determined by Cauchy problems involving the Camassa-Holm equation are considered herein. We study how global solutions influence the corresponding surface, as well as we investigate two sorts of singularities of the metric: the first one is just when the co-frame of dual form is not linearly independent. The second sort of singularity is that arising from solutions blowing up. In particular, it is shown that the metric blows up if and only if the solution breaks in finite time.

An integrable pseudospherical equation with pseudo-peakon solutions

We study an integrable equation whose solutions define a triad of one-forms describing a surface with Gaussian curvature -1. We identify a local group of diffeomorphisms that preserve these solutions and establish conserved quantities. From the symmetries, we obtain invariant solutions that provide explicit metrics for the surfaces. These solutions are unbounded and often appear in mirrored pairs. We introduce the ``collage'' method, which uses conserved quantities to remove unbounded parts and smoothly join the solutions, leading to weak solutions consistent with the conserved quantities. As a result we get pseudo-peakons, which are smoother than Camassa-Holm peakons. Additionally, we apply a Miura-type transformation to relate our equation to the Degasperis-Procesi equation, allowing us to recover peakon and shock-peakon solutions for it from the solutions of the other equation.

Local isometric immersions and breakdown of manifolds determined by Cauchy problems of the Degasperis-Procesi equation

We prove that both local and non-local formulations of the Degasperis-Procesi equation possess a pseudospherical nature. As a result, solutions determined by Cauchy problems with non-trivial initial data and a minimal specific regularity define an orthonormal coframe for a pseudospherical metric within a designated strip. While the region is entirely described by the initial condition, the one-forms are determined by the corresponding solutions. Moreover, we establish that any non-trivial initial condition yields a second fundamental form, which is locally determined within the strip. The surface may collapse within a finite-height strip when the initial condition leads to wave breaking. We determine conditions for the coframe to be defined on the upper plane. We investigate possible integrability structures related to the triad of fundamental one-forms.

Existence and uniqueness of periodic pseudospherical surfaces emanating from Cauchy problems

We study implications and consequences of well-posed solutions of Cauchy problems of a Novikov equation describing pseudospherical surfaces. We show that if the co-frame of dual one-forms satisfies certain conditions for a given periodic initial datum, then there exists exactly two families of periodic one-forms satisfying the structural equations for a surface. Each pair then defines a metric of constant Gaussian curvature and a corresponding Levi-Civita connection form. We prove the existence of universal connection forms giving rise to second fundamental forms compatible with the metric. The main tool to prove our geometrical results is the Kato's semi-group approach, which is used to establish well-posedness of solutions of the Cauchy problem involved and ensure $C^1$ regularity for the first fundamental form and the Levi-Civita connection form.

Persistence and asymptotic analysis of solutions of nonlinear wave equations

We consider persistence properties of solutions for a generalised wave equation including vibration in elastic rods and shallow water models, such as the BBM, the Dai's, the Camassa-Holm, and the Dullin-Gottwald-Holm equations, as well as some recent shallow water equations with the Coriolis effect. We establish unique continuation results and exhibit asymptotic profiles for the solutions of the general class considered. From these results we prove the non-existence of non-trivial spatially compactly supported solutions for the equation. As an aftermath, we study the equations earlier mentioned in light of our results for the general class.

Unique continuation results for abstract quasi-linear evolution equations in Banach spaces

Unique continuation properties for a class of evolution equations defined on Banach spaces are considered from two different point of views: the first one is based on the existence of conserved quantities, which very often translates into the conservation of some norm of the solutions of the system in a suitable Banach space. The second one is regarded to well-posed problems. Our results are then applied to some equations, most of them describing physical processes like wave propagation, hydrodynamics, and integrable systems, such as the $b-$; Fornberg-Whitham; potential and $π-$Camassa-Holm; generalised Boussinesq equations; and the modified Euler-Poisson system.

The Cauchy problem and continuation of periodic solutions for a generalized Camassa-Holm equation

We consider a three-parameter family of non-linear equations with $(p+1)-$order non-linearities. Such family includes as a particular member the well-known $b-$equation, which encloses the famous Camassa-Holm equation. For certain choices of the parameters we establish a global existence result and show a scenario that prevent the wave breaking of solutions. Also, we explore unique continuation properties for some values of the parameters.

Structural and qualitative properties of a geometrically integrable equation

Lie symmetries of a Novikov geometrically integrable equation are found and group-invariant solutions are obtained. Local conservation laws up to second order are established as well as their corresponding conserved quantities. Sufficient conditions for the $L^1$ norm of the solutions to be invariant are presented, as well as conditions for the existence of positive solutions. Two demonstrations for unique continuation of solutions are given: one of them is just based on the invariance of the $L^1$ norm of the solutions, whereas the other is based on well-posedness of Cauchy problems. Finally, pseudo-spherical surfaces determined by the solutions of the equation are studied: all invariant solutions that do not lead to pseudo-spherical surfaces are classified and the existence of an analytic metric for a pseudo-spherical surface is proved using conservation of solutions and well-posedness results.

Persistence properties of a Camassa-Holm type equation with $(n+1)-$order non-linearities

Lower order conservation laws and symmetries of a family of hyperbolic equations having the Camassa-Holm equation as a particular member are obtained. We show that the equation has two conservation laws with zeroth order characteristics and that its symmetries are generated by translations in the independent variables and a certain scaling, as well as some invariant solutions are studied. Next, we consider persistence and asymptotic properties for the solutions of the equation considered. In particular, we analyse the behaviour of the solutions of the equation for large values of the spatial variable. We show that if the initial data has a certain asymptotic exponential decaying, then such property persists for any time as long as the solution exists. Moreover, depending on the behaviour of the initial data for large values of the spatial variable and if for some further time the solution shares the same behaviour, then it necessarily vanishes identically. Finally, we prove unique continuation results for the solutions of the equation.

Existence, continuation, persistence and dynamics of solutions for a generalized 0-Holm-Staley equation

We consider a family of non-local evolution equations including the $0-$Holm-Staley equation. We show that the family considered does not posses compactly supported solutions as long as the initial data is non-trivial. Also, we prove different unique continuation results for the solutions of the family studied. In addition, some special solutions, such as peakons and kinks, are studied and their dynamics are analyzed. Persistence properties of the solutions are also investigated as well as we describe the scenario for the global existence of solutions of the $0-$Holm-Staley equation. In particular, the prove of global existence of solutions as well as our demonstrations for unique continuation results of solutions partially answer some questions pointed out in [A. A. Himonas and R. C. Thompson, Persistence properties and unique continuation for a generalized Camassa-Holm equation, J. Math. Phys., vol. 55, paper 091503, (2014)].

Geometrical demonstration for persistence properties for a bi-Hamiltonian shallow water system

We present a geometrical demonstration for persistence properties for a bi-Hamiltonian system modelling waves in a shallow water regime. Both periodic and non-periodic cases are considered and a key ingredient in our approach is one of the Hamiltonians of the system. As a consequence of our developments we improve recent works dealing with unique continuation properties for shallow water equations, as well as we provide a novel way to prove that the unique compactly supported solution of the system is necessarily the zero function.

Conserved quantities, continuation and compactly supported solutions of some shallow water models

A proof that strong solutions of the Dullin-Gottwald-Holm equation vanishing on an open set of the (1+1) space-time are identically zero is presented. In order to do it, we use a geometrical approach based on the conserved quantities of the equation to prove a unique continuation result for its solutions. We show that this idea can be applied to a large class of equations of the Camassa-Holm type.

Invariants and wave breaking analysis of a Camassa-Holm type equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities

A non-local evolution equation of the Camassa-Holm type with dissipation is considered. The local well-posedness of the solutions of the Cauchy problem involving the equation is established via Kato's approach and the wave breaking scenario is also described. To prove such result, we firstly construct conserved currents for the equation and from them, conserved quantities.

Wave breaking for shallow water models with time decaying solutions

A family of Camassa-Holm type equations with a linear term and cubic and quartic nonlinearities is considered. Local well-posedness results are established via Kato's approach. Conserved quantities for the equation are determined and from them we prove that the energy functional of the solutions is a time-dependent, monotonically decreasing function of time, and bounded from above by the Sobolev norm of the initial data under some conditions. The existence of wave breaking phenomenon is investigated and necessary conditions for its existence are obtained. In our framework the wave breaking is guaranteed, among other conditions, when the coefficient of the linear term is sufficiently small, which allows us to interpret the equation as a linear perturbation of some recent Camassa-Holm type equations considered in the literature.

Integrability, existence of global solutions and wave breaking criteria for a generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation

Recent generalizations of the Camassa-Holm equation are studied from the point of view of existence of global solutions, criteria for wave breaking phenomena and integrability. We provide conditions, based on lower bounds for the first spatial derivative of local solutions, for global well-posedness for the family under consideration in Sobolev spaces. Moreover, we prove that wave breaking phenomena occurs under certain mild hypothesis. Regarding integrability, we apply the machinery developed by Dubrovin [Commun. Math. Phys. 267, 117--139 (2006)] to prove that there exists a unique bi-hamiltonian structure for the equation only when it is reduced to the Dullin-Gotwald-Holm equation. Our results suggest that a recent shallow water model incorporating Coriollis efects is integrable only in specific situations. Finally, to finish the scheme of geometric integrability of the family of equations initiated in a previous work, we prove that the Dullin-Gotwald-Holm equation describes pseudo-spherical surfaces.
