A Rydberg Quantum Simulator

Following Feynman and as elaborated on by Lloyd, a universal quantum simulator (QS) is a controlled quantum device which reproduces the dynamics of any other many particle quantum system with short range interactions. This dynamics can refer to both coherent Hamiltonian and dissipative open system evolution. We investigate how laser excited Rydberg atoms in large spacing optical or magnetic lattices can provide an efficient implementation of a universal QS for spin models involving (high order) n-body interactions. This includes the simulation of Hamiltonians of exotic spin models involving n-particle constraints such as the Kitaev toric code, color code, and lattice gauge theories with spin liquid phases. In addition, it provides the ingredients for dissipative preparation of entangled states based on engineering n-particle reservoir couplings. The key basic building blocks of our architecture are efficient and high-fidelity n-qubit entangling gates via auxiliary Rydberg atoms, including a possible dissipative time step via optical pumping. This allows to mimic the time evolution of the system by a sequence of fast, parallel and high-fidelity n-particle coherent and dissipative Rydberg gates.

Interacting Fibonacci anyons in a Rydberg gas

A defining property of particles is their behavior under exchange. In two dimensions anyons can exist which, opposed to fermions and bosons, gain arbitrary relative phase factors or even undergo a change of their type. In the latter case one speaks of non-Abelian anyons - a particularly simple and aesthetic example of which are Fibonacci anyons. They have been studied in the context of fractional quantum Hall physics where they occur as quasiparticles in the $k=3$ Read-Rezayi state, which is conjectured to describe a fractional quantum Hall state at filling fraction $ν=12/5$. Here we show that the physics of interacting Fibonacci anyons can be studied with strongly interacting Rydberg atoms in a lattice, when due to the dipole blockade the simultaneous laser excitation of adjacent atoms is forbidden. The Hilbert space maps then directly on the fusion space of Fibonacci anyons and a proper tuning of the laser parameters renders the system into an interacting topological liquid of non-Abelian anyons. We discuss the low-energy properties of this system and show how to experimentally measure anyonic observables.

Facilitated spin models of dissipative quantum glasses

We introduce a class of dissipative quantum spin models with local interactions and without quenched disorder that show glassy behaviour. These models are the quantum analogs of the classical facilitated spin models. Just like their classical counterparts, quantum facilitated models display complex glassy dynamics despite the fact that their stationary state is essentially trivial. In these systems, dynamical arrest is a consequence of kinetic constraints and not of static ordering. These models display a quantum version of dynamic heterogeneity: the dynamics towards relaxation is spatially correlated despite the absence of static correlations. Associated dynamical fluctuation phenomena such as decoupling of timescales is also observed. Moreover, we find that close to the classical limit quantum fluctuations can enhance glassiness, as recently reported for quantum liquids.

Dynamical phases and intermittency of the dissipative quantum Ising model

We employ the concept of a dynamical, activity order parameter to study the Ising model in a transverse magnetic field coupled to a Markovian bath. For a certain range of values of the spin-spin coupling, magnetic field and dissipation rate, we identify a first order dynamical phase transition between active and inactive {\em dynamical phases}. We demonstrate that dynamical phase-coexistence becomes manifest in an intermittent behavior of the bath quanta emission. Moreover, we establish the connection between the dynamical order parameter that quantifies the activity, and the longitudinal magnetization that serves as static order parameter. The system we consider can be implemented in current experiments with Rydberg atoms and trapped ions.

Liquid ground state, gap and excited states of a strongly correlated spin chain

We present an exact solution of an experimentally realizable and strongly interacting one-dimensional spin system which is a limiting case of a quantum Ising model with long range interaction in a transverse and longitudinal field. Pronounced quantum fluctuations lead to a strongly correlated liquid ground state. For open boundary conditions the ground state manifold consists of four degenerate sectors whose quantum numbers are determined by the orientation of the edge spins. Explicit expressions for the entanglement properties, the excitation gap as well as the exact wave functions for a couple of excited states are analytically derived and discussed.

Electronically excited cold ion crystals

The laser excitation of an ion crystal to high lying and long-lived electronic states is a genuine many-body process even if in fact only a single ion is excited. This is a direct manifestation of the strong coupling between internal and external dynamics and becomes most apparent in the vicinity of a structural phase transition. Here we show that utilizing highly excited states offers a new approach to the coherent manipulation of ion crystals. This permits the study of phenomena which rely on a strong coupling between electronic and vibrational dynamics and opens up a route towards the quantum simulation of molecular processes in a Paul trap.

Quantum trajectory phase transitions in the micromaser

We study the dynamics of the single atom maser, or micromaser, by means of the recently introduced method of thermodynamics of quantum jump trajectories. We find that the dynamics of the micromaser displays multiple space-time phase transitions, i.e., phase transitions in ensembles of quantum jump trajectories. This rich dynamical phase structure becomes apparent when trajectories are classified by dynamical observables that quantify dynamical activity, such as the number of atoms that have changed state while traversing the cavity. The space-time transitions can be either first-order or continuous, and are controlled not just by standard parameters of the micromaser but also by non-equilibrium "counting" fields. We discuss how the dynamical phase behavior relates to the better known stationary state properties of the micromaser.

Rydberg rings

Atoms in highly excited Rydberg states exhibit remarkable properties and constitute a powerful tool for studying quantum phenomena in strongly interacting many-particle systems. We investigate alkali atoms that are held in a ring lattice and excited to Rydberg states. The system constitutes an ideal model system to study thermalization of a coherently evolving quantum many-particle system in the absence of a thermal bath. Moreover, it offers exciting perspective to create entangled many-body quantum states which can serve as a resource for the generation of single photons.

Dressing of Ultracold Atoms by their Rydberg States in a Ioffe-Pritchard Trap

We explore how the extraordinary properties of Rydberg atoms can be employed to impact the motion of ultracold ground state atoms. Specifically, we use an off-resonant two-photon laser dressing to map features of the Rydberg states on ground state atoms. It is demonstrated that the interplay between the spatially varying quantization axis of the considered Ioffe-Pritchard field and the fixed polarizations of the laser transitions provides the possibility of substantially manipulating the ground state trapping potential.

Thermalization in a coherently driven ensemble of two-level systems

We study the coherent quantum evolution of a closed and driven mesoscopic chain of two-level systems that interact via the van-der-Waals interaction in their excited state. The Hamiltonian consists of a part corresponding to a classical lattice gas and an off-diagonal driving term without classical counterpart. We show that in a certain parameter range the latter leads to a thermalization of the system with respect to observables of the classical lattice gas such as the interaction energy and particle number distribution. We investigate the evolution of the system into this thermal state and discuss how to determine the corresponding temperature. Our findings can be applied to understand thermalization in strongly interacting systems of laser-driven Rydberg atoms, ions or polar molecules.

Magnetic trapping of ultracold Rydberg atoms in low angular momentum states

We theoretically investigate the quantum properties of nS, nP, and nD Rydberg atoms in a magnetic Ioffe-Pritchard trap. In particular, it is demonstrated that the two-body character of Rydberg atoms significantly alters the trapping properties opposed to point-like particles with identical magnetic moment. Approximate analytical expressions describing the resulting Rydberg trapping potentials are derived and their validity is confirmed for experimentally relevant field strengths by comparisons to numerical solutions of the underlying Schroedinger equation. In addition to the electronic properties, the center of mass dynamics of trapped Rydberg atoms is studied. In particular, we analyze the influence of a short-time Rydberg excitation, as required by certain quantum-information protocols, on the center of mass dynamics of trapped ground state atoms. A corresponding heating rate is derived and the implications for the purity of the density matrix of an encoded qubit are investigated.

Thermodynamics of Quantum Jump Trajectories

We apply the large-deviation method to study trajectories in dissipative quantum systems. We show that in the long time limit the statistics of quantum jumps can be understood from thermodynamic arguments by exploiting the analogy between large-deviation and free-energy functions. This approach is particularly useful for uncovering properties of rare dissipative trajectories. We also prove, via an explicit quantum mapping, that rare trajectories of one system can be realized as typical trajectories of an alternative system.

Interaction induced trapping and pulsed emission of a magnetically insensitive Bose-Einstein Condensate

We demonstrate that atoms in magnetically insensitive hyperfine states (m=0) can be trapped efficiently by a Bose-Einstein Condensate of the same atomic species occupying a different hyperfine state. The latter is trapped magnetically. Hyperfine state changing collisions, and therefore loss of the trapped (m=0) atoms, are shown to be strongly inhibited in case of a low density of the confined atomic cloud. We monitor the transition from a 'soft' to a 'hard' effective potential by studying the backaction of the trapped (m=0) atoms onto the condensate which provides their confinement. The controlled outcoupling of the trapped atoms by shaping the condensate's wavefunction is explored. We observe a pulsed emission of atoms from the trapping region reminiscent of an atom laser.

Atomic hyperfine resonances in a magnetic quadrupole field

The quantum resonances of an atom possessing a single valence electron which shows hyperfine interaction with the nucleus is investigated in the presence of a three dimensional magnetic quadrupole field. Particular emphasis is put on the study of the interplay of the hyperfine and quadrupole forces. Analyzing the underlying Hamiltonian a variety of symmetries are revealed which give rise to a two-fold degeneracy of the resonance energies. Our numerical approach employs the complex scaling method and a Sturmian basis set. Several regimes and classes of short-lived and long-lived resonances are identified. The energies and decay widths of the resonances are characterized by their electronic and nuclear spin properties.

One-dimensional Rydberg Gas in a Magnetoelectric Trap

We study the quantum properties of Rydberg atoms in a magnetic Ioffe-Pritchard trap which is superimposed by a homogeneous electric field. Trapped Rydberg atoms can be created in long-lived electronic states exhibiting a permanent electric dipole moment of several hundred Debye. The resulting dipole-dipole interaction in conjunction with the radial confinement is demonstrated to give rise to an effectively one-dimensional ultracold Rydberg gas with a macroscopic interparticle distance. We derive analytical expressions for the electric dipole moment and the critical linear density of Rydberg atoms.

Ultracold Rydberg Atoms in a Ioffe-Pritchard Trap

We discuss the properties of ultracold Rydberg atoms in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic field configuration. The derived two-body Hamiltonian unveils how the large size of Rydberg atoms affects their coupling to the inhomogeneous magnetic field. The properties of the compound electronic and center of mass quantum states are thoroughly analyzed. We find very tight confinement of the center of mass motion in two dimensions to be achievable while barely changing the electronic structure compared to the field free case. This paves the way for generating a one-dimensional ultracold quantum Rydberg gas.

Spectral properties of a Rydberg atom immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate

The electronic spectrum of a Rydberg atom immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated. The Heisenberg equations of motions for the condensate and the Rydberg atom are derived. Neglecting the backaction of the Rydberg atom onto the condensate decouples the equations describing the condensate and Rydberg atom. In this case the spectral structure of the Rydberg atom is completely determined by an effective potential which depends on the density distribution of the condensate. We study the spectral properties for the situation of an isotropic harmonic and anharmonic as well as axially symmetric confinement. In the latter case an intriguing analogy with Rydberg atoms in magnetic fields is encountered.

Time-Averaged Adiabatic Potentials: Versatile traps and waveguides for ultracold quantum gases

We demonstrate a novel class of trapping potentials, time-averaged adiabatic potentials (TAAP) which allows the generation of a large variety of traps and waveguides for ultracold atoms. Multiple traps can be coupled through controllable tunneling barriers or merged altogether. We present analytical expressions for pancake-, cigar-, and ring- shaped traps. The ring-geometry is of particular interest for guided matter-wave interferometry as it provides a perfectly smooth waveguide of controllable diameter, and thus a tunable sensitivity of the interferometer.
