The quantum Hall effect at a weak magnetic field

Using a weak limit for the hopping integral in one direction in the Hofstadter model, we show that the fermion states in the gaps of the spectrum are determined within the Kitaev chain. The proposed approach allows us to study the behavior of Chern insulators (CI) in different classes of symmetry. We consider the Hofstadter model on the square and honeycomb lattices in the case of rational and irrational magnetic fluxes $ϕ$, and discuss the behavior of the Hall conductance at a weak magnetic field in a sample of finite size. We show that in the semiclassical limit at the center of the fermion spectrum, the Bloch states of fermions turn into chiral Majorana fermion liquid when the magnetic scale $ \frac{1}{ ϕ} $ is equal to the sample size N. We are talking about the dielectric-metal phase transition, which is determined by the behavior of the Landau levels in 2D fermion systems in a transverse magnetic field. When a magnetic scale, which determines the wave function of fermions, exceeds the size of the sample, a jump in the longitudinal conductance occurs. The wave function describes non-localized states of fermions, the sample becomes a conductor, the system changes from the dielectric state to the metallic one. It is shown, that at $1/ϕ>$N the quantum Hall effect and the Landau levels are not realized, which makes possibility to study the behavior of CI in irrational magnetic fluxes.

Exactly solvable chain of interacting electrons with correlated hopping and pairing

A generalization of the Mattis-Nam model (J.Math.Phys., 13 (1972), 1185), which takes into account a correlated hopping and pairing of electrons, is proposed, its exact solution is obtained. In the framework of the model the stability of the zero energy Majorana fermions localized at the boundaries is studied in the chain in which electrons interact through both the on-site Hubbard interaction and the correlated hopping and pairing. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is calculated, the region of existence of topological states is determined. It is shown that low-energy excitations destroy bonds between electrons in the chain, leading to an insulator state.

Topological states in the Hofstadter model on a honeycomb lattice

e provide a detailed analysis of a topological structure of a fermion spectrum in the Hofstadter model with different hopping integrals along the $x,y,z$-links ($t_x=t, t_y=t_z=1$), defined on a honeycomb lattice. We have shown that the chiral gapless edge modes are described in the framework of the generalized Kitaev chain formalism, which makes it possible to calculate the Hall conductance of subbands for different filling and an arbitrary magnetic flux $ϕ$. At half-filling the gap in the center of the fermion spectrum opens for $t>t_c=2^ϕ$, a quantum phase transition in the 2D-topological insulator state is realized at $t_c$. The phase state is characterized by zero energy Majorana states localized at the boundaries. Taking into account the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ (where $U<<1$), the criterion for the stability of a topological insulator state is calculated at $t<<1$, $t \sim U$. Thus, in the case of $ U > 4Δ$, the topological insulator state, which is determined by chiral gapless edge modes in the gap $Δ$, is destroyed.

Edge modes in the Hofstadter model of interacting electrons

We provide a detailed analysis of a realization of chiral gapless edge modes in the framework of the Hofstadter model of interacting electrons. In a transverse homogeneous magnetic field and a rational magnetic flux through an unit cell the fermion spectrum splits into topological subbands with well-defined Chern numbers, contains gapless edge modes in the gaps. It is shown that the behavior of gapless edge modes is described within the framework of the Kitaev chain where the tunneling of Majorana fermions is determined by effective hopping of Majorana fermions between chains. The proposed approach makes it possible to study the fermion spectrum in the case of an irrational flux, to calculate the Hall conductance of subbands that form a fine structure of the spectrum. In the case of a rational flux and a strong on-site Hubbard interaction $U$, $ U >4 Δ$ ($ Δ$ is a gap), the topological state of the system, which is determined by the corresponding Chern number and chiral gapless edge modes, collapses. When the magnitude of the on-site Hubbard interaction changes, at the point $ U = 4 Δ$ a topological phase transition is realized, i.e., there are changes in the Chern numbers of two subbands due to their degeneration.

Persistent current in 2D topological superconductors

A junction between two boundaries of a topological superconductor (TSC), mediated by localized edge modes of Majorana fermions, is investigated. The tunneling of fermions across the junction depends on the magnetic flux. It breaks the time-reversal symmetry at the boundary of the sample. The persistent current is determined by the emergence of Majorana edge modes. The structure of the edge modes depends on the magnitude of the tunneling amplitude across the junction. It is shown that there are two different regimes, which correspond to strong and weak tunneling of Majorana fermions, distinctive in the persistent current behavior. In a strong tunneling regime, the fermion parity of edge modes is not conserved and the persistent current is a $2π$-periodic function of the magnetic flux. When the tunneling is weak the chiral Majorana states, which are propagating along the edges have the same fermion parity. They form a $4π$-phase periodic persistent current along the boundaries. The regions in the space of parameters, which correspond to the emergence of $2π$- and of $4π$-harmonics, are numerically determined. The peculiarities in the persistent current behavior are studied.

Spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in topological superconductors

We study the behavior of spinless fermions in superconducting state, in which the phases of the superconducting order parameter depend on the direction of the link. We find that the energy of the superconductor depends on the phase differences of the superconducting order parameter. The solutions for the phases corresponding to the energy minimuma, lead to a topological superconducting state with the nontrivial Chern numbers. We focus our quantitative analysis on the properties of topological states of superconductors with different crystalline symmetry and show that the phase transition in the topological superconducting state is result of spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. The peculiarities in the chiral gapless edge modes behavior are studied, the Chern numbers are calculated.

Chern insulator with large Chern numbers. Chiral Majorana fermion liquid

In the framework of Hofstadter`s approach we provide a detailed analysis of a realization of exotic topological states such as the Chern insulator with large Chern numbers. In a transverse homogeneous magnetic field a one-particle spectrum of fermions transforms to an intricate spectrum with a fine topological structure of the subbands. In a weak magnetic field $H$ for a rational magnetic flux, a topological phase with a large Chern number is realized near the half filling. There is an abnormal behavior of the Hall conductance ${σ_{xy}\simeq \frac{e}{2 H}}$. At half-filling, the number of chiral Majorana fermion edge states increases sharply forming a new state, called the chiral Majorana fermion liquid.

Spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators

The system of spinless fermions on a hexagonal lattice is studied . We have considered tight-binding model with the hopping integrals between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor lattice sites, that depend on the direction of the link. The links are divided on three types depending on the direction, the hopping integrals are defined by different phases along the links. The energy of the system depends on the phase differences, the solutions for the phases, that correspond to the minimums of the energy, lead to a topological insulator state with the nontrivial Chern numbers. We have analyzed distinct topological states and phase transitions, the behavior of the chiral gapless edge modes, have defined the Chern numbers. The band structure of topological insulator (TI) is calculated, the ground-state phase diagram in the parameter space is obtained. We propose a novel mechanism of realization of TI, when the TI state is result of spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry due to nontrivial stable solutions for the phases that determine the hopping integrals along the links and show that the Haldane model can be implemented in real compounds of the condensed matter physics.

Colossal magnetoresistance in topological Kondo insulator

Abnormal electronic properties of complex systems require new ideas concerning explanation of their behavior and possibility of realization. In this acticle we show that a colossal magnetoresistance is realized in the state of the topological Kondo insulator, that is similar to the Kondo insulator state in the Kondo lattice. The mechanism of the phenomenon is the following: in the spin gapless phase an external magnetic field induces the gap in the spectrum of spin excitations, the gap in the spectrum of fermions is opened due to a hybridization between spin and fermion subsystems at half filling, as the result the magnetic field leads to metal-insulator (or bad metal - insulator) phase transition. A model of the topological Kondo lattice defined on a honeycomb lattice is studied for the case when spinless fermion bands are half filled. It is shown that the hybridization between local moments and itinerant fermions should be understood as the hybridization between corresponding Majorana fermions of the spin and charge sectors. The system is a topological insulator, single fermion and spin excitations at low energies are massive. We will show that a spin gap induces a gap in the charge channel, it leads to an appearance of a topological insulator state with chiral gapless edge modes and the Chern number one or two depending on the exchange integrals' values. The relevance of this to the traditional Kondo insulator state is discussed.

The Chern states on the honeycomb and Lieb lattices

The Haldane model of the Chern insulator is considered on the Lieb and honeycomb lattices. We provide a detailed analysis of the model's ground-state phase diagram and demonstrate a scenario of the topological phase transitions in the system with a single-particle spectrum that includes flat and dispersion bands, that is realized on the Lieb lattice. We find that the Chern number of the flat band is non-zero, depending on the parameters of the model. We define the topological metal state as an intermediate state between topological insulator and trivial metal. The phase transition between topological insulator and topological metal states is accompanied by continuous changing of the Chern number, a jump of the surface charge or spin current defines the point of the topological metal-trivial metal phase transition. The results have been illustrated with numerical calculations of the model.

Giant magnetoresistance of edge current between fermion and spin topological systems

A spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ subsystem conjoined along a cut with a subsystem of spinless fermions in the state of topological insulator is studied on a honeycomb lattice. The model describes a junction between a 2D topological insulator and a 2D spin lattice with direction-dependent exchange interactions in topologically trivial and nontrivial phase states. The model Hamiltonian of the complex system is solved exactly by reduction to free Majorana fermions in a static $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. In contrast to junctions between topologically trivial phases, the junction is defined by chiral edge states and direct interaction between them for topologically nontrivial phases. As a result of the boundary interaction between chiral edge modes, the edge junction is defined by the Chern numbers of the subsystems: such the gapless edge modes with the same (different) chirality switch on (off) the edge current between topological subsystems. The sign of the Chern number of spin subsystem is changed in an external magnetic field, thus the electric current strongly depends both on a direction and a value of an applied weak magnetic field. We have provided a detailed analysis of the edge current and demonstrate how to switch on (off) the electric current in the magnetic field.

Exactly solvable 2D topological Kondo lattice model

A spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev sublattice interacting with a subsystem of spinless fermions is studied on a honeycomb lattice when the fermion band is half filled. The model Hamiltonian describes a topological Kondo lattice with the Kitaev interaction, it is solved exactly by reduction to free Majorana fermions in a static $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. An yet unsolved problem of a hybridization of fermions and local moments in the Kondo lattice at low temperatures is solved in the framework of the model proposed. The Kondo hybridization gap is opened and the system is fixed in insulator and spin insulator states, due to a spin-fermion nature of the gap. We will show that the hybridization between local moments and itinerant fermions should be understand as hybridization between corresponding Majorana fermions of the spin and charge sectors. The RKKI interaction between local moments is not realized in the model, a system demonstrates a `quasi Kondo' scenario of behavior with realization chiral gapless edge states in topological nontrivial phases. The ground-state phase diagram of the interacting subsystems calculated in the parameter space is rich.

Exactly solvable model of topological insulator realized on spin-1/2 lattice

In this paper we propose an exactly solvable model of a topological insulator defined on a spin-1/2 square decorated lattice. Itinerant fermions defined in the framework of the Haldane model interact via the Kitaev interaction with spin-1/2 Kitaev sublattice. The presented model, whose ground state is a non-trivial topological phase, is solved exactly. We have found out that various phase transitions without gap closing at the topological phase transition point outline the separate states with different topological numbers. We provide a detailed analysis of the model's ground-state phase diagram and demonstrate how quantum phase transitions between topological states arise. We have found that the states with both the same and different topological numbers are all separated by the quantum phase transition without gap closing. The transition between topological phases is accompanied by a rearrangement of the spin subsystem's spectrum from band to flat-band states.

Luttinger Liquid State with Effective Attractive Hare-Core Interaction

An exact solvable 'zig-zag' ladder model of degenerated spinless fermions is proposed and solved exactly by the means of the Bethe ansatz. An effective attractive hard-core interaction and direct Coulomb repulsion of fermions on the nearest-neighbor sites of different chains induce a new phase state of the ladder. We give a detailed analysis of the exact phase diagram at zero temperature, that is characterized by two phases at the filling exceeding 2/3: itinerant and 'frozen' fermions, for which two different species reside in spatially separate regions. The critical exponents describing asymptotic behavior of the correlation functions are calculated using the Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory. It is shown also, that the density of the magnetization of the corresponding zig-zag spin-1/2 ladder has a jump equal to 1/3 at the magnetic field equal to zero.

Strongly Interacting Luttinger Liquid and Superconductivity in an Exactly Solvable Model

A new family of exactly solvable one dimensional models with a hard-core repulsive potential is solved by the Bethe Ansatz for an arbitrary hard-core radius. The exact ground state phase diagrams in a plane 'electron density - on-site interaction' have been studied for several values of a hard-core radius. It is shown that superconducting phase and strongly interacting Luttinger liquid state are coexisted at a high electron density and unusually high value of repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction.
