Nuclei embedded in an electron gas

The properties of nuclei embedded in an electron gas are studied within the relativistic mean-field approach. These studies are relevant for nuclear properties in astrophysical environments such as neutron-star crusts and supernova explosions. The electron gas is treated as a constant background in the Wigner-Seitz cell approximation. We investigate the stability of nuclei with respect to alpha and beta decay. Furthermore, the influence of the electronic background on spontaneous fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei is analyzed. We find that the presence of the electrons leads to stabilizing effects for both $α$ decay and spontaneous fission for high electron densities. Furthermore, the screening effect shifts the proton dripline to more proton-rich nuclei, and the stability line with respect to beta decay is shifted to more neutron-rich nuclei. Implications for the creation and survival of very heavy nuclear systems are discussed.

Baryon deceleration by strong chromofields in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

It is assumed that strong chromofields are generated at early stages of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions which give rise to a collective deceleration of net baryons from colliding nuclei. We have solved classical equations of motion for baryonic slabs under the action of a time-dependent longitudinal chromoelectric field. It is demonstrated that the slab final rapidities are rather sensitive to the strength and decay time of the chromofield as well as to the back reaction of the produced partonic plasma. The net-baryon rapidity loss of about 2 units, found for most central Au-Au collisions at RHIC, can be explained by the action of chromofields with the initial energy density of about 50 GeV/fm^3. Predictions for the baryon stopping at the LHC are made.

Compact stars made of fermionic dark matter

Compact stars consisting of fermions with arbitrary masses and interaction strengths are studied by solving the structure equation of general relativity, the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations. Scaling solutions are derived for a free and an interacting Fermi gas and tested by numerical calculations. We demonstrate that there is a unique mass-radius relation for compact stars made of free fermions which is independent of the fermion mass. For sufficiently strong interactions, the maximum stable mass of compact stars and its radius are controlled by the parameter of the interaction, both increasing linearly with the interaction strength. The mass-radius relation for compact stars made of strongly interacting fermions shows that the radius remains approximately constant for a wide range of compact star masses.

Thermodynamics of explosions

We present our first attempts to formulate a thermodynamics-like description of explosions. The motivation is partly a fundamental interest in non-equilibrium statistical physics, partly the resemblance of an explosion to the late stages of a heavy-ion collision. We perform numerical simulations on a microscopic model of interacting billiard-ball like particles, and we analyse the results of such simulations trying to identify collective variables describing the degree of equilibrium during the explosion.

Chiral Fluid Dynamics and Collapse of Vacuum Bubbles

We study the expansion dynamics of a quark-antiquark plasma droplet from an initial state with restored chiral symmetry. The calculations are made within the linear $σ$ model scaled with an additional scalar field representing the gluon condensate. We solve numerically the classical equations of motion for the meson fields coupled to the fluid-dynamical equations for the plasma. Strong space-time oscillations of the meson fields are observed in the course of the chiral transition. A new phenomenon, the formation and collapse of vacuum bubbles, is also predicted. The particle production due to the bremsstrahlung of the meson fields is estimated.
