K-theory of rational quadratic forms

We compute the genus of a rational quadratic form in terms of the K-theory of a C*-algebra attached to the adelic orthogonal group of the form. As a corollary, one gets a higher composition law for the rational quadratic forms. As an illustration, we consider the Gauss composition of the binary quadratic forms.

Subfactors and Hecke groups

We study a relation between the Hecke groups and the index of subfactors in a von Neumann algebra. Such a problem was raised by V. F. R. Jones. We solve the problem using the notion of a cluster C*-algebra.

K-theory of cluster C*-algebras

It is proved that the K_0-group of a cluster C*-algebra is isomorphic to the corresponding cluster algebra. As a corollary, one gets a shorter proof of the positivity conjecture for cluster algebras. As an example, we consider a cluster C*-algebra A(1,1) coming from triangulation of an annulus with one marked point on each boundary component.

On a Poisson summation formula for noncommutative tori

It is proved that a maximal abelian subalgebra of the noncommutative torus commutes with the Laplace operator on a complex torus. As a corollary, one gets an analog of the Poisson summation formula for noncommutative tori.

On tea, donuts and non-commutative geometry

As many will agree, it feels good to complement a cup of tea by a donut or two. This sweet relationship is also a guiding principle of non-commutative geometry known as Serre Theorem. We explain the algebra behind this theorem and prove that elliptic curves are complementary to the so-called non-commutative tori.

On a problem of A. Weil

A topological invariant of the geodesic laminations on a modular surface is constructed. The invariant has a continuous part (the tail of a continued fraction) and a combinatorial part (the singularity data). It is shown, that the invariant is complete, i.e. the geodesic lamination can be recovered from the invariant. The continuous part of the invariant has geometric meaning of a slope of lamination on the surface.

Remark on arithmetic topology

We formalize the arithmetic topology, i.e. a relationship between knots and primes. Namely, using the notion of a cluster C*-algebra we construct a functor from the category of 3-dimensional manifolds M to a category of algebraic number fields K, such that the prime ideals (ideals, resp.) in the ring of integers of K correspond to knots (links, resp.) in M. It is proved that the functor realizes all axioms of the arithmetic topology conjectured in the 1960's by Manin, Mazur and Mumford.

On algebraic values of function exp (2ni x + log log y)

It is proved that for all but a finite set of the square-free integers $d$ the value of transcendental function $\exp~(2πi ~x+\log\log y)$ is an algebraic number for the algebraic arguments $x$ and $y$ lying in a real quadratic field of discriminant $d$. Such a value generates the Hilbert class field of the imaginary quadratic field of discriminant $-d$.

Noncommutative geometry of rational elliptic curves

We study an interplay between operator algebras and geometry of rational elliptic curves. Namely, let $\mathcal{O}_B$ be the Cuntz-Krieger algebra given by square matrix $B=(b-1, ~1, ~b-2, ~1)$, where $b$ is an integer greater or equal to two. It is proved, that there exists a dense self-adjoint sub-algebra of $\mathcal{O}_B$, which is isomorphic (modulo an ideal) to a twisted homogeneous coordinate ring of the rational elliptic curve $\mathcal{E}({\Bbb Q})=\{(x,y,z) \in {\Bbb P}^2({\Bbb C}) ~|~ y^2z=x(x-z)(x-{b-2\over b+2}z)\}$.

Remark on Weil's conjectures

We introduce a cohomology theory for a class of projective varieties over a finite field coming from the canonical trace on a C*-algebra attached to the variety. Using the cohomology, we prove the rationality, functional equation and the Betti numbers conjectures for the zeta function of the variety.

On cluster C*-algebras

We introduce a C*-algebra A(x,Q) attached to the cluster x and a quiver Q. If Q(T) is the quiver coming from a triangulation T of the Riemann surface S with a finite number of cusps, we prove that the primitive spectrum of A(x,Q(T)) times R is homeomorphic to a generic subset of the Teichmueller space of surface S. We conclude with an analog of the Tomita-Takesaki theory and the Connes invariant T(M) for the algebra A(x,Q(T)).

Cluster C*-algebras and knot polynomials

We construct a representation of the braid groups in a cluster C*-algebra coming from a triangulation of the Riemann surface S with one or two cusps. It is shown that the Laurent polynomials attached to the K-theory of such an algebra are topological invariants of the closure of braids. In particular, the Jones and HOMFLY polynomials of a knot correspond to the case S being a sphere with two cusps and a torus with one cusp, respectively.

Real multiplication revisited

It is proved that the Hilbert class field of a real quadratic field ${\Bbb Q}(\sqrt{D})$ modulo a power $m$ of the conductor $f$ is generated by the Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenform for a congruence subgroup of level $fD$.

Foliations on modular curves

It is proved, that a foliation on a modular curve given by the vertical trajectories of holomorphic differential corresponding to the Hecke eigenform is either the Strebel foliation or the pseudo-Anosov foliation.

Riemann surfaces and AF-algebras

For a generic set in the Teichmueller space, we construct a covariant functor with the range in a category of the AF-algebras; the functor maps isomorphic Riemann surfaces to the stably isomorphic AF-algebras. As a special case, one gets a categorical correspondence between complex tori and the so-called Effros-Shen algebras.

Notes on noncommutative geometry

The book covers basics of noncommutative geometry and its applications in topology, algebraic geometry and number theory. A brief survey of main parts of noncommutative geometry with historical remarks, bibliography and a list of exercises is attached. Our notes are intended for the graduate students and faculty with interests in noncommutative geometry; they can be read by non-experts in the field.
