Low-Mass Magnetic Monopoles in the Galaxy: Simulations and Comparison with Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic-Ray Data

Origin and composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays are still uncertain, particularly the rare events exceeding the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff and whose apparent arrival directions point to the Local Void. This work is an in-depth investigation of the possibility that such cosmic rays contain low-mass magnetic monopoles predicted in several recent theoretical models. Using a custom extension to CRPropa, a state-of-the-art code for modeling cosmic ray propagation, monopoles are tracked in the galactic environment under realistic assumptions on mass, magnetic charge, and initial phase-space distributions. Our simulations demonstrate that relic MMs follow filamentary ``Galactic magnetic funnels'', producing anisotropic arrival directions at Earth. The expected arrival directions are concentrated in a small region of the sky, which has significant implications for the design and interpretation of future searches. A comparison of the simulated arrival directions with the Pierre Auger Observatory dataset shows that the null hypothesis - no monopole contribution - is statistically preferred for the majority of cases. Using a profile-likelihood analysis that incorporates both directional and energy information, we set 90% C.L. upper limits on the integral MM flux of $< 2.1\times10^{-23}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}sr^{-1}}$.

The MONUMENT Experiment: Ordinary Muon Capture studies for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay

The MONUMENT experiment measures ordinary muon capture (OMC) on isotopes relevant for neutrinoless double-beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay and nuclear astrophysics. OMC is a particularly attractive tool for improving the theoretical description of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay. It involves similar momentum transfers and allows testing the virtual transitions involved in 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay against experimental data. During the 2021 campaign, MONUMENT measured OMC on $^{76}$Se and $^{136}$Ba, the isotopes relevant for next-generation 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay searches, like LEGEND and nEXO. The experimental setup has been designed to accurately extract the total and partial muon capture rates, which requires precise reconstruction of energies and time-dependent intensities of the OMC-related $\gamma$ rays. The setup also includes a veto counter system to allow selecting a clean sample of OMC events. This work provides a detailed description of the MONUMENT setup operated during the 2021 campaign, its two DAQ systems, calibration and analysis approaches, and summarises the achieved detector performance. Future improvements are also discussed.

Dark-matter And Neutrino Computation Explored (DANCE) Community Input to Snowmass

This paper summarizes the needs of the dark matter and neutrino communities as it relates to computation. The scope includes data acquisition, triggers, data management and processing, data preservation, simulation, machine learning, data analysis, software engineering, career development, and equity and inclusion. Beyond identifying our community needs, we propose actions that can be taken to strengthen this community and to work together to overcome common challenges.

An RF-only ion-funnel for extraction from high-pressure gases

An RF ion-funnel technique has been developed to extract ions from a high-pressure (10 bar) noble-gas environment into vacuum ($10^{-6}$ mbar). Detailed simulations have been performed and a prototype has been developed for the purpose of extracting $^{136}$Ba ions from Xe gas with high efficiency. With this prototype, ions have been extracted for the first time from high-pressure xenon gas and argon gas. Systematic studies have been carried out and compared to the simulations. This demonstration of extraction of ions with mass comparable to that of the gas generating the high-pressure into vacuum has applications to Ba tagging from a Xe-gas time-projection chamber (TPC) for double beta decay as well as to the general problem of recovering trace amounts of an ionized element in a heavy (m$>40$ u) carrier gas.

Search for neutrinoless double beta decay

We review current experimental efforts to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$νββ$). A description of the selected leading experiments is given and the strongest recent results are compared in terms of achieved background indexes and limits on effective Majorana mass. A combined limit is also shown. The second part of the review covers next generation experiments, highlighting the challenges and new technologies that may be necessary to achieve a justifiable discovery potential. A potential synergy with direct dark matter searches, which could be an especially prudent strategy in case the axial vector coupling constant is quenched in 0$νββ$ decay, is emphasized.

Solid state breakdown counter for magnetic monopole and other highly ionizing particles searches

Solid state breakdown counters combine threshold properties of nuclear track detectors with the convenience of electronic event registration in real time. Here we discuss the principle of operation of the breakdown counters and their potential applicability to the existing (MoEDAL) and foreseen (CosmicMoEDAL) searches of magnetic monopoles and other highly ionizing rare particles. Avenues of R\&D that may lead to an increased appeal of the technology are also described

A C-13(alpha,n)O-16 calibration source for KamLAND

We report on the construction and performance of a calibration source for KamLAND using the reaction C-13(alpha,n)O-16 with Po-210 as the alpha progenitor. The source provides a direct measurement of this background reaction in our detector, high energy calibration points for the detector energy scale, and data on quenching of the neutron visible energy in KamLAND scintillator. We also discuss the possibility of using the reaction C-13(alpha,n)O-16 as a source of tagged slow neutrons.
