On the Whitham system for the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We derive the Whitham modulation equations for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the plane (2d NLS) with small dispersion. The modulation equations are derived in terms of both physical and Riemann variables; the latter yields equations of hydrodynamic type. The complete 2d NLS Whitham system consists of six dynamical equations in evolutionary form and two constraints. As an application, we determine the linear stability of one-dimensional traveling waves. In both the elliptic and hyperbolic case, the traveling waves are found to be unstable. This result is consistent with all previous investigations of such stability by other methods. These results are supported by direct numerical calculations.

Whitham equations and phase shifts for the Korteweg-deVries equation

The semi-classical Korteweg-deVries equation for step-like data is considered with a small parameter in front of the highest derivative. Using perturbation analysis Whitham theory is constructed to higher order. This allows the order one phase and the complete leading order solution to be obtained; the results are confirmed by extensive numerical calculations.

On the Whitham system for the radial nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Dispersive shock waves (DSWs) of the defocusing radial nonlinear Schrödinger (rNLS) equation in two spatial dimensions are studied. This equation arises naturally in Bose-Einstein condensates, water waves and nonlinear optics. A unified nonlinear WKB approach, equally applicable to integrable or nonintegrable partial differential equations, is used to find the rNLS Whitham modulation equation system in both physical and hydrodynamic type variables. The description of DSWs obtained via Whitham theory is compared with direct rNLS numerics; the results demonstrate very good quantitative agreement. On the other hand, as expected, comparison with the corresponding DSW solutions of the one-dimensional NLS equation exhibits significant qualitative and quantitative differences.

Whitham modulation theory for (2+1)-dimensional equations of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili type

Whitham modulation theory for certain two-dimensional evolution equations of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) type is presented. Three specific examples are considered in detail: the KP equation, the two-dimensional Benjamin-Ono (2DBO) equation and a modified KP (m2KP) equation. A unified derivation is also provided. In the case of the m2KP equation, the corresponding Whitham modulation system exhibits features different from the other two. The approach presented here does not require integrability of the original evolution equation. Indeed, while the KP equation is known to be a completely integrable equation, the 2DBO equation and the m2KP equation are not known to be integrable. In each of the cases considered, the Whitham modulation system obtained consists of five first-order quasilinear partial differential equations. The Riemann problem (i.e. the analogue of the Gurevich-Pitaevskii problem) for the one-dimensional reduction of the m2KP equation is studied. For the m2KP equation, the system of modulation equations is used to analyze the linear stability of traveling wave solutions.

A universal asymptotic regime in the hyperbolic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

The appearance of a fundamental long-time asymptotic regime in the two space one time dimensional hyperbolic nonlinear Schrödinger (HNLS) equation is discussed. Based on analytical and extensive numerical simulations an approximate self-similar solution is found for a wide range of initial conditions -- essentially for initial lumps of small to moderate energy. Even relatively large initial amplitudes, which imply strong nonlinear effects, eventually lead to local structures resembling those of the self-similar solution, with appropriate small modifications. These modifications are important in order to properly capture the behavior of the phase of the solution. This solution has aspects that suggest it is a universal attractor emanating from wide ranges of initial data.

Painlevé representation of Tracy-Widom$_β$ distribution for $β= 6$

In arXiv:1306.2117, we found explicit Lax pairs for the soft edge of beta ensembles with even integer values of $β$. Using this general result, the case $β=6$ is further considered here. This is the smallest even $β$, when the corresponding Lax pair and its relation to Painlevé II (PII) have not been known before, unlike cases $β=2$ and $4$. It turns out that again everything can be expressed in terms of the Hastings-McLeod solution of PII. In particular, a second order nonlinear ODE for the logarithmic derivative of Tracy-Widom distribution for $β=6$ involving the PII function in the coefficients, is found, which allows one to compute asymptotics for the distribution function. The ODE is a consequence of a linear system of three ODEs for which the local singularity analysis yields series solutions with exponents in the set $4/3$, $1/3$ and $-2/3$.

Classical integrability for beta-ensembles and general Fokker-Planck equations

Beta-ensembles of random matrices are naturally considered as quantum integrable systems, in particular, due to their relation with conformal field theory, and more recently appeared connection with quantized Painlevé Hamiltonians. Here we demonstrate that, at least for {\it even integer} beta, these systems are classically integrable, e.g. there are Lax pairs associated with them, which we explicitly construct. To come to the result, we show that a solution of every Fokker-Planck equation in one space (and one time) dimensions can be considered as a component of an eigenvector of a Lax pair. The explicit finding of the Lax pair depends on finding a solution of a governing system -- a closed system of two nonlinear PDEs of hydrodynamic type. This result suggests that there must be a solution for all values of beta. We find the solution of this system for even integer beta in the particular case of quantum Painlevé II related to the soft edge of the spectrum for beta-ensembles. The solution is given in terms of Calogero system of $β/2$ particles in an additional time-dependent potential. Thus, we find another situation where quantum integrability is reduced to classical integrability.

Beta ensembles, quantum Painlevé equations and isomonodromy systems

This is a review of recent developments in the theory of beta ensembles of random matrices and their relations with conformal filed theory (CFT). There are (almost) no new results here. This article can serve as a guide on appearances and studies of quantum Painlevé and more general multidimensional linear equations of Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov (BPZ) type in literature. We demonstrate how BPZ equations of CFT arise from $β$-ensemble eigenvalue integrals. Quantum Painlevé equations are relatively simple instances of BPZ or confluent BPZ equations, they are PDEs in two independent variables ("time" and "space"). While CFT is known as quantum integrable theory, here we focus on the appearing links of $β$-ensembles and CFT with {\it classical} integrable structure and isomonodromy systems. The central point is to show on the example of quantum Painlevé II (QPII)~\cite{betaFP1} how classical integrable structure can be extended to general values of $β$ (or CFT central charge $c$), beyond the special cases $β=2$ ($c=1$) and $c\to\infty$ where its appearance is well-established. We also discuss an á priori very different important approach, the ODE/IM correspondence giving information about complex quantum integrable models, e.g.~CFT, from some stationary Schrödinger ODEs. Solution of the ODEs depends on (discrete) symmetries leading to functional equations for Stokes multipliers equivalent to discrete integrable Hirota-type equations. The separation of "time" and "space" variables, a consequence of our integrable structure, also leads to Schrödinger ODEs and thus may have a connection with ODE/IM methods.

Hard edge for beta-ensembles and Painlevé III

Starting from the diffusion equation at beta random matrix hard edge obtained by Ramirez and Rider (2008), we study the question of its relation with Lax pairs for Painleve III. The results are in many respects similar to the ones found for soft edge by Bloemendal and Virag (2010). In particular, the values beta = 2 and 4 (but not beta = 1) allow for a simple connection with Painlevé III solutions and Lax pairs. However, there is an additional surprise for a special relation of parameters where a simple solution of the diffusion equation can be obtained, which is a one-parameter generalization of Gumbel distribution. Our considerations can be extended to the other Painleve equations since the corresponding diffusions are in fact known as nonstationary (imaginary time) Schrödinger equations for quantum Painlevé Hamiltonians. We also track the hard-to-soft edge limit transition in terms of our Lax pairs.

Various equations for gap probabilities of coupled Gaussian matrices

Versions of Tracy-Widom (TW) and Adler-Shiota-van Moerbeke (ASvM) approaches are applied to derive various partial differential equations (PDE) satisfied by joint eigenvalue spacing probabilities of two coupled Gaussian Hermitian matrices (coupled GUE). All the lowest (third) order PDE satisfied by the probabilities for the largest eigenvalues of two coupled GUE are found, and the results of both approaches are compared. The TW approach allows to derive all PDE at once, while in the ASvM one starting with different bilinear identities leads to different subsets of the full set of equations. An interesting result is that the joint probability for the largest eigenvalues of coupled Gaussian matrices satisfies a number of different PDE, and the previously known Adler-van Moerbeke equation (AvM) [3] is only one of them. Some of the new equations look like "coupled Painlevé IV" and have usual Painlevé IV equation as one-matrix limit, i.e. when the spectral endpoint of one of the matrices goes to infinity. This is in contrast to the AvM equation, which becomes trivial in this limit. Moreover, the new PDE, which stem from the matrix kernel approach of [23], do not contain derivatives w.r.t. the strength of coupling, unlike the AvM equation. In other words, they contain fewer independent variables and in this sense are simpler.

All the lowest order PDE for spectral gaps of Gaussian matrices

Tracy-Widom (TW) equations for one-matrix unitary ensembles (UE) (equivalent to a particular case of Schlesinger equations for isomonodromic deformations) are rewritten in a general form which allows one to derive all the lowest order equations (PDE) for spectral gap probabilities of UE without intermediate higher-order PDE. This is demonstrated on the example of Gaussian ensemble (GUE) for which all the third order PDE for gap probabilities are obtained explicitly. Moreover, there is a {\it second order} PDE for GUE probabilities in the case of more than one spectral endpoint. This approach allows to derive all PDE at once where possible, while in the method based on Hirota bilinear identities and Virasoro constraints starting with different bilinear identities leads to different subsets of the full set of equations.

Universal Structure and Universal PDE for Unitary Ensembles

An attempt is made to describe random matrix ensembles with unitary invariance of measure (UE) in a unified way, using a combination of Tracy-Widom (TW) and Adler-Shiota-Van Moerbeke (ASvM) approaches to derivation of partial differential equations (PDE) for spectral gap probabilities. First, general 3-term recurrence relations for UE restricted to subsets of real line, or, in other words, for functions in the resolvent kernel, are obtained. Using them, simple universal relations between all TW dependent variables and one-dimensional Toda lattice $τ$-functions are found. A universal system of PDE for UE is derived from previous relations, which leads also to a {\it single independent PDE} for spectral gap probability of various UE. Thus, orthogonal function bases and Toda lattice are seen at the core of correspondence of different approaches. Moreover, Toda-AKNS system provides a common structure of PDE for unitary ensembles. Interestingly, this structure can be seen in two very different forms: one arises from orthogonal functions-Toda lattice considerations, while the other comes from Schlesinger equations for isomonodromic deformations and their relation with TW equations. The simple example of Gaussian matrices most neatly exposes this structure.

The correspondence between Tracy-Widom (TW) and Adler-Shiota-van Moerbeke (ASvM) approaches in random matrix theory: the Gaussian case

Two approaches (TW and ASvM) to derivation of integrable differential equations for random matrix probabilities are compared. Both methods are rewritten in such a form that simple and explicit relations between all TW dependent variables and $τ$-functions of ASvM are found, for the example of finite size Gaussian matrices. Orthogonal function systems and Toda lattice are seen as the core structure of both approaches and their relationship.

It is shown that the entropy of systems with large number of degrees of freedom is practically independent of observers, contrary to the claim of hep-th/0310022.
