On the number of nodal domains of toral eigenfunctions

We study the number of nodal domains of toral Laplace eigenfunctions. Following Nazarov-Sodin's results for random fields and Bourgain's de-randomisation procedure we establish a precise asymptotic result for "generic" eigenfunctions. Our main results in particular imply an optimal lower bound for the number of nodal domains of generic toral eigenfunctions.

Fluctuations of the total number of critical points of random spherical harmonics

We determine the asymptotic law for the fluctuations of the total number of critical points of random Gaussian spherical harmonics in the high degree limit. Our results have implications on the sophistication degree of an appropriate percolation process for modelling nodal domains of eigenfunctions on generic compact surfaces or billiards.

On probability measures arising from lattice points on circles

A circle, centered at the origin and with radius chosen so that it has non-empty intersection with the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, gives rise to a probability measure on the unit circle in a natural way. Such measures, and their weak limits, are said to be attainable from lattice points on circles. We investigate the set of attainable measures and show that it contains all extreme points, in the sense of convex geometry, of the set of all probability measures that are invariant under some natural symmetries. Further, the set of attainable measures is closed under convolution, yet there exist symmetric probability measures that are not attainable. To show this, we study the geometry of projections onto a finite number of Fourier coefficients and find that the set of attainable measures has many singularities with a "fractal" structure. This complicated structure in some sense arises from prime powers - singularities do not occur for circles of radius $\sqrt{n}$ if $n$ is square free.

Topologies of nodal sets of random band limited functions

It is shown that the topologies and nestings of the zero and nodal sets of random (Gaussian) band limited functions have universal laws of distribution. Qualitative features of the supports of these distributions are determined. In particular the results apply to random monochromatic waves and to random real algebraic hyper-surfaces in projective space.

On the distribution of the critical values of random spherical harmonics

We study the limiting distribution of critical points and extrema of random spherical harmonics, in the high energy limit. In particular, we first derive the density functions of extrema and saddles; we then provide analytic expressions for the variances and we show that the empirical measures in the high-energy limits converge weakly to their expected values. Our arguments require a careful investigation of the validity of the Kac-Rice formula in nonstandard circumstances, entailing degeneracies of covariance matrices for first and second derivatives of the processes being analyzed.

Nodal intersections for random eigenfunctions on the torus

We investigate the number of nodal intersections of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the standard two-dimensional flat torus ("arithmetic random waves") with a fixed real-analytic reference curve with nonvanishing curvature. The expected intersection number is universally proportional to the length of the reference curve, times the wavenumber, independent of the geometry. Our main result prescribes the asymptotic behaviour of the nodal intersections variance for analytic curves in the high energy limit; remarkably, it is dependent on both the angular distribution of lattice points lying on the circle with radius corresponding to the given wavenumber, and the geometry of the given curve. In particular, this implies that the nodal intersection number admits a universal asymptotic law with arbitrarily high probability.

On Nonlinear Functionals of Random Spherical Eigenfunctions

We prove Central Limit Theorems and Stein-like bounds for the asymptotic behaviour of nonlinear functionals of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions. Our investigation combine asymptotic analysis of higher order moments for Legendre polynomials and, in addition, recent results on Malliavin calculus and Total Variation bounds for Gaussian subordinated fields. We discuss application to geometric functionals like the Defect and invariant statistics, e.g. polyspectra of isotropic spherical random fields. Both of these have relevance for applications, especially in an astrophysical environment.

Nodal length fluctuations for arithmetic random waves

Using the spectral multiplicities of the standard torus, we endow the Laplace eigenspaces with Gaussian probability measures. This induces a notion of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the torus ("arithmetic random waves"). We study the distribution of the nodal length of random eigenfunctions for large eigenvalues, and our primary result is that the asymptotics for the variance is non-universal, and is intimately related to the arithmetic of lattice points lying on a circle with radius corresponding to the energy.

Fluctuations of the nodal length of random spherical harmonics, erratum

Using the multiplicities of the Laplace eigenspace on the sphere (the space of spherical harmonics) we endow the space with Gaussian probability measure. This induces a notion of random Gaussian spherical harmonics of degree $n$ having Laplace eigenvalue $E=n(n+1)$. We study the length distribution of the nodal lines of random spherical harmonics. It is known that the expected length is of order $n$. It is natural to conjecture that the variance should be of order $n$, due to the natural scaling. Our principal result is that, due to an unexpected cancelation, the variance of the nodal length of random spherical harmonics is of order $\log{n}$. This behaviour is consistent with the one predicted by Berry for nodal lines on chaotic billiards (Random Wave Model). In addition we find that a similar result is applicable for "generic" linear statistics of the nodal lines.

On the nodal lines of random and deterministic Laplace eigenfunctions

In the present survey we present some of the recent results concerning the geometry of nodal lines of random Gaussian eigenfunctions (in case of spectral degeneracies) or wavepackets and related issues. The most fundamental example, where the spectral degeneracy allows us to consider random eigenfunctions (i.e. endow the eigenspace with Gaussian probability measure), is the sphere, and the corresponding eigenspaces are the spaces of spherical harmonics; this model is the primary focus of the present survey. The list of results presented is, by no means, complete.

The defect variance of random spherical harmonics

The defect of a function $f:M\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is defined as the difference between the measure of the positive and negative regions. In this paper, we begin the analysis of the distribution of defect of random Gaussian spherical harmonics. By an easy argument, the defect is non-trivial only for even degree and the expected value always vanishes. Our principal result is obtaining the asymptotic shape of the defect variance, in the high frequency limit. As other geometric functionals of random eigenfunctions, the defect may be used as a tool to probe the statistical properties of spherical random fields, a topic of great interest for modern Cosmological data analysis.

Scalar curvature and $Q$-curvature of random metrics

We study Gauss curvature for random Riemannian metrics on a compact surface, lying in a fixed conformal class; our questions are motivated by comparison geometry. Next, analogous questions are considered for the scalar curvature in dimension $n>2$, and for the $Q$-curvature of random Riemannian metrics.

On the Excursion Sets of Spherical Gaussian Eigenfunctions

The high frequency behaviour for random eigenfunctions of the spherical Laplacian has been recently the object of considerable interest, also because of strong motivations arising from Physics and Cosmology. In this paper, we are concerned with the high frequency behaviour of excursion sets; in particular, we establish a Uniform Central Limit Theorem for the empirical measure, i.e. the proportion of spherical surface where spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions lie below a level $z$. Our proofs borrows some techniques from the literature on stationary long memory processes; in particular, we expand the empirical measure into Hermite polynomials, and establish a uniform weak reduction principle, entailing that the asymptotic behaviour is asymptotically dominated by a single term in the expansion. As a result, we establish a functional central limit theorem; the limiting process is fully degenerate.

The distribution of the zeroes of random trigonometric polynomials

We study the asymptotic distribution of the number $Z_{N}$ of zeros of random trigonometric polynomials of degree $N$ as $N\to\infty$. It is known that as $N$ grows to infinity, the expected number of the zeros is asymptotic to $\frac{2}{\sqrt{3}}\cdot N$. The asymptotic form of the variance was predicted by Bogomolny, Bohigas and Leboeuf to be $cN$ for some $c>0$. We prove that $\frac{Z_{N}-\E Z_{N}}{\sqrt{cN}}$ converges to the standard Gaussian. In addition, we find that the analogous result is applicable for the number of zeros in short intervals.

Counting open nodal lines of random waves on planar domains

We compute the asymptotic expectation of the number of {\em open} nodal lines for random waves on smooth planar domains. We find that for both the long energy window $[0,λ]$ and the short one $[λ,λ+1]$ the expected number of open nodal lines is proportional to $λ$, asymptotically as $λ\to\infty$. Our results are consistent with the predictions in the physics literature made by Blum, Gnutzmann and Smilansky \cite{BGS}.

On the distribution of the nodal sets of random spherical harmonics

We study the length of the nodal set of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the $\spheredim$-dimensional sphere. It is well known that the eigenspaces corresponding to $\eigval=n(n+\spheredim-1)$ are the spaces $\eigspc$ of spherical harmonics of degree $n$, of dimension $\eigspcdim$. We use the multiplicity of the eigenvalues to endow $\eigspc$ with the Gaussian probability measure and study the distribution of the $\spheredim$-dimensional volume of the nodal sets of a randomly chosen function. The expected volume is proportional to $\sqrt{\eigval}$. One of our main results is bounding the variance of the volume to be $O(\frac{\eigval}{\sqrt{\eigspcdim}})$. In addition to the volume of the nodal set, we study its Leray measure. For every $n$, the expected value of the Leray measure is $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2π}}$. We are able to determine that the asymptotic form of the variance is $\frac{const}{\eigspcdim}$.
