Superconducting diode effect in unconventional $p$-wave magnets

We investigate the emergence of superconducting phases, both with zero and finite Cooper-pair center-of-mass momenta, in recently proposed unconventional $p$-wave magnets. As a result, we find that while these magnetic phases are in principle compatible with a conventional pairing state at zero field, a Fulde-Ferrell phase can generally be promoted as the leading instability under the application of a finite magnetic field. Interestingly, by calculating the efficiency of the superconducting diode effect of this finite-momentum pairing state via a Ginzburg-Landau theory, we uncover that a high efficiency can be obtained in these systems for experimentally relevant spin splittings. Therefore, our prediction reveals that the experimental discovery of these materials represents a promising platform for the construction of superconducting logic circuits that may as a consequence find various technological applications.

Efficiency of the superconducting diode effect of pair-density-wave states in two-dimensional $d$-wave altermagnets

We systematically study the efficiency of the intrinsic superconducting diode effect of several pair-density-wave states that can emerge in two-dimensional $d$-wave metallic altermagnets. To this end, we investigate several scenarios using an effective minimal microscopic model and Ginzburg-Landau analysis in order to derive the corresponding pairing phase diagrams. In addition, we examine also whether the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an applied external magnetic field are beneficial to this effect in these systems. As a consequence, our results add further support to the fact that altermagnetic materials indeed provide a good platform for the pursuit of finite-momentum superconductivity, which can lead to an optimization of the diode efficiency in some physically interesting situations. The latter phenomenon has been recently proposed to be key in improving the applicability of new energy-efficient quantum electronic devices.

Large quark mass Euler-Heisenberg type action for QCD with quark sources and its Abelian limit

The quark determinant in the presence of a background gluon field is calculated in a large quark mass approach within a derivative expansion by considering quark sources. The resulting low-energy QCD Effective Field Theory (EFT) is valid for non-homogeneous fields and it presents, besides the usual Euler-Heisenberg type gluon self-interactions, different types of corrections to the minimal quark-gluon interaction among which there are several imaginary terms. The Abelian limit of this effective action, i.e. an expanded Euler-Heisenberg effective action with fermion sources, is also found and it is shown to contain, therefore, corrections to the fermion-photon interactions, including imaginary terms. Different resulting properties are calculated such as: their contributions to the energy-momentum tensor and its trace, the Poynting vector, the chromo-electric permittivity and chromo-magnetic permeability. Conditions for these quantities, as well as for the corresponding Abelian limits, to be real are exhibited.

Strong pair-density-wave fluctuations in an exactly solvable doped Mott insulator

We investigate the Hatsugai-Kohmoto (HK) model on a square lattice, which describes both a Mott insulator at half-filling and a non-Fermi liquid phase on doping. Through the solution of this exactly solvable model with the inclusion of pairing interactions, we demonstrate the emergence of strong pair-density-wave (PDW) fluctuations associated with center-of-mass momentum $\mathbf{Q}=(π,π)$ at finite temperatures for low dopings up to a critical doping and intermediate $U$ interaction. Furthermore, we also confirm that a superconducting instability appears in the model within a wide regime of interaction $U$ and doping parameter $x$. In view of the fact that it has been recently put forward that the metal-insulator transition of the HK model belongs to the same universality class as the Mott transition of the paradigmatic Hubbard model [Huang \emph{et al.}, Nat. Phys. \textbf{18}, 511 (2022)], our work may thus shed light on an interesting scenario regarding the emergence of a fluctuating PDW phase on doping a Mott insulator, which has been argued to be relevant for understanding the physics of the cuprate superconductors in the underdoped regime.

Classical Yang Mills equations with sources: consequences of specific scalar potentials

Some well known gauge scalar potential very often considered or used in the literature are investigated by means of the classical Yang Mills equations for the $SU(2)$ subgroups of $N_c=3$. By fixing a particular shape for the scalar potential, the resulting vector potentials and the corresponding color-charges sources are found. By adopting the spherical coordinate system, it is shown that spherically symmetric solutions, only dependent on the radial coordinate, are only possible for the Abelian limit, otherwise, there must have angle-dependent component(s). The following solutions for the scalar potential are investigated: the Coulomb potential and a non-spherically symmetric generalization, a linear potential $A_0 (\vec{r}) \sim (κr)$, a Yukawa-type potential $A_0 (\vec{r}) \sim (C e^{-r/r_0}/r)$ and finite spatial regions in which the scalar potential assumes constant values. The corresponding chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic fields, as well as the color-charge densities, are found to have strong deviations from the spherical symmetric configurations. We speculate these types of non-spherically symmetric configurations may contribute (or favor) for the (anisotropic) confinement mechanism since they should favor color charge-anti-charge (or three-color-charge) bound states that are intrinsically non spherically symmetric with (asymmetric) confinement of fluxes. Specific conditions and relations between the parameters of the solutions are also presented.
