Dynamical Traps Caused by Fuzzy Rationality as a New Emergence Mechanism

A new emergence mechanism related to the human fuzzy rationality is considered. It assumes that individuals (operators) governing the dynamics of a certain system try to follow an optimal strategy in controlling its motion but fail to do this perfectly because similar strategies are indistinguishable for them. The main attention is focused on the systems where the optimal dynamics implies the stability of a certain equilibrium point in the corresponding phase space. In such systems the fuzzy rationality gives rise to some neighborhood of the equilibrium point, the region of dynamical traps, wherein each point is regarded as an equilibrium one by the operators. So when the system enters this region and while it is located in it, maybe for a long time, the operator control is suspended. To elucidate a question as to whether the dynamical traps on their own can cause emergent phenomena the stochastic factors are eliminated from consideration. In this case the system can leave the dynamical trap region only because of the mismatch between actions of different operators. By way of example, a chain of oscillators with dynamical traps is analyzed numerically. As demonstrated the dynamical traps do induce instability and complex behavior of such systems.

Mathematical formalism of physics of systems with motivation

The paper discusses fundamental problems in mathematical description of social systems based on physical concepts, with so-called statistical social systems being the main subject of consideration. Basic properties of human beings and human societies that distinguish social and natural systems from each other are listed to make it clear that individual mathematical formalism and physical notions should be developed to describe such objects rather then can be directly inherited from classical mechanics and statistical physics. As a particular example systems with motivation are considered. Their characteristic features are analyzed individually and the appropriate mathematical description is proposed. Finally the paper concludes that the basic elements necessary for describing statistical social systems or, more rigorously, systems with motivation are available or partly developed in modern physics and applied mathematics.

Truncated Levy Random Walks and Generalized Cauchy Processes

A continuous Markovian model for truncated Levy random walks is proposed. It generalizes the approach developed previously by Lubashevsky et al. Phys. Rev. E 79, 011110 (2009); 80, 031148 (2009), Eur. Phys. J. B 78, 207 (2010) allowing for nonlinear friction in wondering particle motion and saturation of the noise intensity depending on the particle velocity. Both the effects have own reason to be considered and individually give rise to truncated Levy random walks as shown in the paper. The nonlinear Langevin equation governing the particle motion was solved numerically using an order 1.5 strong stochastic Runge-Kutta method and the obtained numerical data were employed to calculate the geometric mean of the particle displacement during a certain time interval and to construct its distribution function. It is demonstrated that the time dependence of the geometric mean comprises three fragments following one another as the time scale increases that can be categorized as the ballistic regime, the Levy type regime (superballistic, quasiballistic, or superdiffusive one), and the standard motion of Brownian particles. For the intermediate Levy type part the distribution of the particle displacement is found to be of the generalized Cauchy form with cutoff. Besides, the properties of the random walks at hand are shown to be determined mainly by a certain ratio of the friction coefficient and the noise intensity rather then their characteristics individually.

Continuous Markovian model for Levy random walks with superdiffusive and superballistic regimes

We consider a previously devised model describing Levy random walks (Phys. Rev E 79, 011110; 80, 031148, (2009)). It is demonstrated numerically that the given model describes Levy random walks with superdiffusive, ballistic, as well as superballistic dynamics. Previously only the superdiffusive regime has been analyzed. In this model the walker velocity is governed by a nonlinear Langevin equation. Analyzing the crossover from small to large time scales we find the time scales on which the velocity correlations decay and the walker motion essentially exhibits Levy statistics. Our analysis is based on the analysis of the geometric means of walker displacements and allows us to tackle probability density functions with power-law tails and, correspondingly, divergent moments.

Scale-free memory model for multiagent reinforcement learning. Mean field approximation and rock-paper-scissors dynamics

A continuous time model for multiagent systems governed by reinforcement learning with scale-free memory is developed. The agents are assumed to act independently of one another in optimizing their choice of possible actions via trial-and-error search. To gain awareness about the action value the agents accumulate in their memory the rewards obtained from taking a specific action at each moment of time. The contribution of the rewards in the past to the agent current perception of action value is described by an integral operator with a power-law kernel. Finally a fractional differential equation governing the system dynamics is obtained. The agents are considered to interact with one another implicitly via the reward of one agent depending on the choice of the other agents. The pairwise interaction model is adopted to describe this effect. As a specific example of systems with non-transitive interactions, a two agent and three agent systems of the rock-paper-scissors type are analyzed in detail, including the stability analysis and numerical simulation. Scale-free memory is demonstrated to cause complex dynamics of the systems at hand. In particular, it is shown that there can be simultaneously two modes of the system instability undergoing subcritical and supercritical bifurcation, with the latter one exhibiting anomalous oscillations with the amplitude and period growing with time. Besides, the instability onset via this supercritical mode may be regarded as "altruism self-organization". For the three agent system the instability dynamics is found to be rather irregular and can be composed of alternate fragments of oscillations different in their properties.

Living Tissue Self-Regulation as a Self-Organization Phenomenon

Self-regulation of living tissue as an example of self-organization phenomena in hierarchical systems of biological, ecological, and social nature is under consideration. The characteristic feature of these systems is the absence of any governing center and, thereby, their self-regulation is based on a cooperative interaction of all the elements. The work develops a mathematical theory of a vascular network response to local effects on scales of individual units of peripheral circulation.

Continuous time multidimensional Markovian description of Levy walks

The paper presents a multidimensional model for nonlinear Markovian random walks that generalizes one we developed previously (Phys. Rev. E v.79, 011110, 2009) in order to describe the Levy type stochastic processes in terms of continuous trajectories of walker motion. This approach may open a way to treat Levy flights or Levy random walks in inhomogeneous media or systems with boundaries in the future. The proposed model assumes the velocity of a wandering particle to be affected by a linear friction and a nonlinear Langevin force whose intensity is proportional to the magnitude of the velocity for its large values. Based on the singular perturbation technique the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation is analyzed and the relationship between the system parameters and the Levy exponent is found. Following actually the previous paper we demonstrate also that anomalously long displacements of the wandering particle are caused by extremely large fluctuations in the particle velocity whose duration is determined by the system parameters rather than the duration of the observation interval. In this way we overcome the problem of ascribing to Levy random walks non-Markov properties.

Physics of systems with motivation as an interdisciplinary branch of science

The paper discusses the fundamental characteristics distinguishing the natural and social systems from each other. It considers in detail the basic approaches, prospects, and possibilities of constructing mathematical description for social systems as well as develops the appropriate notions required to do this. The main attention is focused on systems with motion treated as a characteristic example of social systems where the development of mathematical description should demonstrate the crucial ideas of fusing natural and social sciences.

Distributed self-regulation of living tissue. Effects of nonideality

Self-regulation of living tissue as an example of self-organization phenomena in active fractal systems of biological, ecological, and social nature is under consideration. The characteristic feature of these systems is the absence of any governing center and, thereby, their self-regulation is based on a cooperative interaction of all the elements. The paper develops a mathematical theory of a vascular network response to local effects on scales of individual units of peripheral circulation. First, it formulates a model for the self-processing of information about the cellular tissue state and cooperative interaction of blood vessels governing redistribution of blood flow over the vascular network. Mass conservation (conservation of blood flow as well as transported biochemical compounds) plays the key role in implementing these processes. The vascular network is considered to be of the tree form and the blood vessels are assumed to respond individually to an activator in blood flowing though them. Second, the constructed governing equations are analyzed numerically. It is shown that at the first approximation the blood perfusion rate depends locally on the activator concentration in the cellular tissue, which is due to the hierarchical structure of the vascular network. Then the distinction between the reaction threshold of individual vessels and that of the vascular network as a whole is demonstrated. In addition, the nonlocal component of the dependence of the blood perfusion rate on the activator concentration is found to change its form as the activator concentration increases.

Phase States and Phase Portraits of Tunnel Traffic. Empirical Data Analysis

The 3D fundamental diagrams and phase portraits for tunnel traffic is constructed based on the empirical data collected during the last years in the deep long branch of the Lefortovo tunnel located on the 3rd circular highway in Moscow. This tunnel of length 3 km is equipped with a dense system of stationary ra-diodetetors distributed uniformly along it chequerwise at spacing of 60 m. The data were averaged over 30 s. Each detector measures three characteristics of the vehicle ensemble; the flow rate, the car velocity, and the occupancy for three lanes individually. The conducted analysis reveals complexity of phase states of tunnel traffic. In particular, we show the presence of cooperative traffic dynamics in this tunnel and the variety of phase states different in properties. Besides, the regions of regular and stochastic dynamics are found and the presence of dynamical traps is demonstrated.

Different routes towards oscillatory zoning in the growth of solid solutions

Oscillatory zoning, i.e. self-formation of spatial quasi-periodic oscillations in the composition of solid growing from aqueous solution, is analyzed theoretically. Keeping in mind systems like (Ba,Sr)SO4 we propose a 1D model that takes into account the nonideality of the solid solution and the system asymmetry, in particular, reflecting itself in different solubilities for such systems. Based on a linear stability analysis different parameter regions can be identified. Even an ideal solution solution with a sufficiently large asymmetry can display oscillatory zoning. Numerical simulations complement the linear stability analysis as well as the qualitative consideration of the instability development and reveal the nature of the limit cycles.

The fundamental diagram for tunnel traffic is constructed based on the empirical data collected during the last two years in the deep long branch of the Lefortovo tunnel located on the 3$^\text{rd}$ circular highway of Moscow. This tunnel of length 3 km is equipped with a dense system of stationary radiodetetors distributed uniformly along it chequerwise at spacing of 60 m. The data were averaged over 30 s. Each detector measures three characteristics of the vehicle ensemble; the flow rate, the car velocity, and the occupancy for three lanes individually. The conducted analysis reveals an original complex structure of the fundamental diagram.

Three-frame Algorithm of Car Path Reconstruction from Airborne Traffic Data

The airborne traffic monitoring system forms a novel technology of detecting vehicle motion. An optical digital camera located on an airborne platform produces a series of images which then are processed to recognized the fixed vehicles. In this way the video data are converted into the time sequence of frames containing the vehicle coordinates. In the present work a three-frame algorithm is developed to identify the succeeding vehicle positions. It is based on finding the neighboring points in the frame sequence characterized by minimal acceleration. To verify and optimize the developed algorithm a ``Virtual Road'' simulator was created. Finally available empirical data are analyzed using the created algorithm.

Realization of Levy flights as continuous processes

On the basis of multivariate Langevin processes we present a realization of Levy flights as a continuous process. For the simple case of a particle moving under the influence of friction and a velocity dependent stochastic force we explicitly derive the generalized Langevin equation and the corresponding generalized Fokker-Planck equation describing Levy flights. Our procedure is similar to the treatment of the Kramers-Fokker Planck equation in the Smoluchowski limit. The proposed approach forms a feasible way of tackling Levy flights in inhomogeneous media or systems with boundaries what is up to now a challenging problem.

Generalized superstatistics of nonequilibrium Markovian systems

The paper is devoted to the construction of the superstatistical description for nonequilibrium Markovian systems. It is based on Kirchhoff's diagram technique and the assumption on the system under consideration to possess a wide variety of cycles with vanishing probability fluxes. The latter feature enables us to introduce equivalence classes called channels within which detailed balance holds individually. Then stationary probability as well as flux distributions are represented as some sums over the channels. The latter construction actually forms the superstatistical description, which, however, deals with a certain superposition of equilibrium subsystems rather then is a formal expansion of the nonequilibrium steady state distribution into terms of the Boltzmann type.

Boundary singularities and boundary conditions for the Fokker-Planck equations

The boundary conditions for the Fokker-Planck equations, forward and backward ones are directly derived from the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation for M-dimensional region with boundaries. The boundaries are assumed, in addition, to be able to absorb wandering particles or to give rise to fast surface transport. It is demonstrated that the boundaries break down the symmetry of random walks in their vicinity, leading to the boundary singularities in the corresponding kinetic coefficients. Eliminating these singularities we get the desired boundary conditions. As it must be the boundary condition for the forward Fokker-Planck equation matches the mass conservation.

Boundary-reaction-diffusion model for oscillatory zoning in binary crystals grown from solution

Oscillatory Zoning (OZ) is a phenomenon exhibited by many geologically formed crystals. It is characterized by quasi periodic oscillations in the composition of a solid solution, caused by self-organization. We present a new model for OZ. The growth mechanism applied includes species diffusion through the solution bulk, particle adsorption, surface diffusion and subsequently desorption or incorporation into the crystal. This mechanism, in particular, can provide the synchronization effects necessary to reproduce the layered structure of experimentally obtained crystals, lacking in other models. We conduct a linear stability analysis combined with numerical simulations. Our results reproduce the experimental findings with respect to the patterns formed and a critical supersaturation necessary for OZ to occur.
