A Non-Relativistic Weyl Anomaly

We examine the Weyl anomaly for a four-dimensional z=3 Lifshitz scalar coupled to Horava's theory of anisotropic gravity. We find a one-loop break-down of scale-invariance at second order in the gravitational background.

(0,2) Landau-Ginzburg Models and Residues

We study the topological heterotic ring in (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models without a (2,2) locus. The ring elements correspond to elements of the Koszul cohomology groups associated to a zero-dimensional ideal in a polynomial ring, and the computation of half-twisted genus zero correlators reduces to a map from the first non-trivial Koszul cohomology group to complex numbers. This map is a generalization of the local Grothendieck residue. The results may be applied to computations of Yukawa couplings in a heterotic compactification at a Landau-Ginzburg point.

Half-Twisted (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg Models

We compute correlators of chiral operators in (0,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theories. The class of theories and the correlators we study are relevant for extending and testing mirror symmetry away from the (2,2) locus. More generally, these methods provide alpha'-exact results about certain superpotential couplings in compactifications of the heterotic string.

Half-Twisted Correlators from the Coulomb Branch

We compute correlators of chiral operators in half-twisted (0,2) supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models. Our results give simple algebraic formulas for a (0,2) generalization of genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of compact toric varieties. We derive compact expressions for deformed quantum cohomology relations and apply our general method to several examples.

Instantons, Hypermultiplets and the Heterotic String

Hypermultiplet couplings in type IIA string theory on a Calabi-Yau space can be quantum corrected by D2-brane instantons wrapping special Lagrangian cycles. On the other hand, hypermultiplet couplings in the heterotic string on a K3 surface are corrected by world-sheet instantons wrapping curves. In a class of examples, we relate these two sets of instanton corrections. We first present an analogue of the c-map for the heterotic string via a dual flux compactification of M-theory. Using this duality, we propose two ways of capturing quantum corrections to hypermultiplets. We then use the orientifold limit of certain F-theory compactifications to relate curves in K3 to special Lagrangians in dual type IIA compactifications. We conclude with some results from perturbative string theory for hypermultiplet F-terms and a conjecture about the topology of brane instantons.

Non-Local Observables in the A-Model

We compute correlators of non-local observables in a large class of A-twisted massive Landau-Ginzburg and gauged linear sigma models by localization to the discrete vacua. As an application, we present two topological field theories with identical chiral rings and correlators of local observables, which nevertheless differ in the correlators of non-local observables.

The Coulomb Branch in Gauged Linear Sigma Models

We investigate toric GLSMs as models for tachyon condensation in type II strings on space-time non-supersymmetric orbifold singularities. The A-model correlators in these theories satisfy a set of relations related to the topology of the resolved orbifold. Using these relations we compute the correlators and find a non-trivial chiral ring in the IR, which we interpret as supported on isolated Coulomb vacua of the theory.

A-Model Correlators from the Coulomb Branch

We compute the contribution of discrete Coulomb vacua to A-Model correlators in toric Gauged Linear Sigma Models. For models corresponding to a compact variety, this determines the correlators at arbitrary genus. For non-compact examples, our results imply the surprising conclusion that the quantum cohomology relations break down for a subset of the correlators.

The reflexive dimension of a lattice polytope

The reflexive dimension refldim(P) of a lattice polytope P is the minimal d so that P is the face of some d-dimensional reflexive polytope. We show that refldim(P) is finite for every P, and give bounds for refldim(kP) in terms of refldim(P) and k.

D-Branes on Vanishing del Pezzo Surfaces

We analyze in detail the case of a marginally stable D-Brane on a collapsed del Pezzo surface in a Calabi-Yau threefold using the derived category of quiver representations and the idea of aligned gradings. We show how the derived category approach to D-branes provides a straight-forward and rigorous construction of quiver gauge theories associated to such singularities. Our method shows that a procedure involving exceptional collections used elsewhere in the literature is only valid if some tachyon-inducing Ext3 groups are zero. We then analyze in generality a large class of Seiberg dualities which arise from tilting equivalences. It follows that some (but not all) mutations of exceptional collections induce Seiberg duality in this context. The same tilting equivalence can also be used to remove unwanted Ext3 groups and convert an unphysical quiver into a physical one.

Supersymmetric Boundary Conditions for the N=2 Sigma Model

We clarify the discussion of N=2 supersymmetric boundary conditions for the classical d=2, N=(2,2) Non-Linear Sigma Model on an infinite strip. Our conclusions about the supersymmetric cycles match the results found in the literature. However, we find a constraint on the boundary action that is not satisfied by many boundary actions used in the literature.

Weak Nonleptonic Omega Decay in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We calculate the weak nonleptonic decay of the Omega^- baryon to octet final states in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT). We include the one-loop leading logarithmic effects and show that this improves the universality of the HBChPT constants.

A New Fast Method for Determining Local Properties of Striped Patterns

From the striped coats of zebras to the ripples in windblown sand, the natural world abounds with locally banded patterns. Such patterns have been of great interest throughout history, and, in the last twenty years, scientists in a wide variety of fields have been studying the patterns formed in well-controlled experiments that yield enormous quantities of high-precision data. These experiments involving phenomena as diverse as chemical reactions in shallow layers, thermal convection in horizontal fluid layers, periodically shaken layers of sand, and the growth of slime mold colonies often display patterns that appear qualitatively similar. Methods are needed to characterize in a reasonable amount of time the differences and similarities in patterns that develop in different systems, as well as in patterns formed in one system for different experimental conditions. In this Letter, we introduce a novel, fast method for determining local pattern properties such as wavenumber, orientation, and curvature as a function of position for locally striped patterns.
