Orientation-resolved ultrafast spin reorientation dynamics in ferrimagnetic DyCo$_5$

Under quasi-static conditions, ferrimagnetic DyCo$_5$ thin films exhibit a thermally induced spin-reorientation transition, in which the equilibrium magnetization changes from an out-of-plane to an in-plane orientation, mostly as a result of the competing magnetic anisotropy contributions of the Dy $4f$ rare-earth and Co $3d$ transition-metal sublattices. While this equilibrium transition has been studied, it remains an open question whether such a reorientation can be triggered on ultrafast timescales using femtosecond laser excitation. In this work, we investigate the ultrafast spin-reorientation dynamics in DyCo$_5$. The time-dependent orientation of the magnetization vector following femtosecond laser excitation is quantified by combining polar with transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range, which are sensitive to the out-of-plane and in-plane magnetization component, respectively. Both techniques are implemented at the Co M$_{3,2}$ resonance and are complemented by visible-light MOKE measurements. This combined approach allows us to resolve the canting of the magnetization from an out-of-plane toward an in-plane orientation and to determine the characteristic timescales of the transient spin-reorientation process.

Magnon-mediated terahertz spin transport in metallic Gd|Pt stacks

We study femtosecond spin transport in a Gd|Pt stack induced by a laser pulse. Remarkably, the dynamics of the spin current from Gd to Pt suggests that its dominant driving force is the ultrafast spin Seebeck effect. As the contribution of a transient spin voltage in the metal Gd is minor, Gd acts akin a magnetic insulator here. This view is supported by time- and spin-resolved photoemission, which indicates that a buildup of spin voltage is suppressed by exchange scattering, leading to similar amplitudes and relaxation rates of hot majority- and minority-spin electron populations.

Ultrafast Opto-magnetic Effects in the Extreme Ultraviolet Spectral Range

Coherent light-matter interactions mediated by opto-magnetic phenomena like the inverse Faraday effect (IFE) are expected to provide a non-thermal pathway for ultrafast manipulation of magnetism on timescales as short as the excitation pulse itself. As the IFE scales with the spin-orbit coupling strength of the involved electronic states, photo-exciting the strongly spin-orbit coupled core-level electrons in magnetic materials appears as an appealing method to transiently generate large opto-magnetic moments. Here, we investigate this scenario in a ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy by using intense and circularly polarized pulses of extreme ultraviolet radiation. Our results reveal ultrafast and strong helicity-dependent magnetic effects which are in line with the characteristic fingerprints of an IFE, corroborated by ab initio opto-magnetic IFE theory and atomistic spin dynamics simulations.

Frequency-independent terahertz anomalous Hall effect in DyCo$_{5}$, Co$_{32}$Fe$_{68}$ and Gd$_{27}$Fe$_{73}$ thin films from DC to 40 THz

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a fundamental spintronic charge-to-charge-current conversion phenomenon and closely related to spin-to-charge-current conversion by the spin Hall effect. Future high-speed spintronic devices will crucially rely on such conversion effects at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we reveal that the AHE remains operative from DC up to 40 THz with a flat frequency response in thin films of three technologically relevant magnetic materials: DyCo$_{5}$, Co$_{32}$Fe$_{68}$ and Gd$_{27}$Fe$_{73}$. We measure the frequency-dependent conductivity-tensor elements $σ_{xx}$ and $σ_{yx}$ and find good agreement with DC measurements. Our experimental findings are fully consistent with ab-initio calculations of $σ_{yx}$ for CoFe and highlight the role of the large Drude scattering rate (~100 THz) of metal thin films, which smears out any sharp spectral features of the THz AHE. Finally, we find that the intrinsic contribution to the THz AHE dominates over the extrinsic mechanisms for the Co$_{32}$Fe$_{68}$ sample. The results imply that the AHE and related effects such as the spin Hall effect are highly promising ingredients of future THz spintronic devices reliably operating from DC to 40 THz and beyond.

Distinct Ultrafast Electronic and Magnetic Response in M-edge Magnetic Circular Dichroism

Experimental investigations of ultrafast magnetization dynamics increasingly employ resonant magnetic spectroscopy in the ultraviolet spectral range. Besides allowing to disentangle the element-specific transient response of functional magnetic systems, these techniques also promise to access attosecond to few-femtosecond dynamics of spin excitations. Here, we report on a systematic study of transient magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) on the transition metals Fe, Co and Ni as well as on a FeNi and GdFe alloy and reveal a delayed onset between the electronic and magnetic response. Supported by \textit{ab-initio} calculations, we attribute our observation to a transient energy shift of the absorption and MCD spectra at the corresponding elemental resonances due to non-equilibrium changes of electron occupations.

Dissecting spin-phonon equilibration in ferrimagnetic insulators by ultrafast lattice excitation

To gain control over magnetic order on ultrafast time scales, a fundamental understanding of the way electron spins interact with the surrounding crystal lattice is required. However, measurement and analysis even of basic collective processes such as spin-phonon equilibration have remained challenging. Here, we directly probe the flow of energy and angular momentum in the model insulating ferrimagnet yttrium iron garnet. Following ultrafast resonant lattice excitation, we observe that magnetic order reduces on distinct time scales of 1 ps and 100 ns. Temperature-dependent measurements, a spin-coupling analysis and simulations show that the two dynamics directly reflect two stages of spin-lattice equilibration. On the 1-ps scale, spins and phonons reach quasi-equilibrium in terms of energy through phonon-induced modulation of the exchange interaction. This mechanism leads to identical demagnetization of the ferrimagnet's two spin-sublattices and a novel ferrimagnetic state of increased temperature yet unchanged total magnetization. Finally, on the much slower, 100-ns scale, the excess of spin angular momentum is released to the crystal lattice, resulting in full equilibrium. Our findings are relevant for all insulating ferrimagnets and indicate that spin manipulation by phonons, including the spin Seebeck effect, can be extended to antiferromagnets and into the terahertz frequency range.

Ultrafast thermally induced magnetic switching in synthetic ferrimagnets

Synthetic ferrimagnets are composite magnetic structures formed from two or more anti- ferromagnetically coupled magnetic sublattices with different magnetic moments. Here we report on atomistic spin simulations of the laser-induced magnetization dynamics on such synthetic ferrimag- nets, and demonstrate that the application of ultrashort laser pulses leads to sub-picoscond magnetization dynamics and all-optical switching in a similar manner as in ferrimagnetic alloys. Moreover, we present the essential material properties for successful laser-induced switching, demonstrating the feasibility of using a synthetic ferrimagnet as a high density magnetic storage element without the need of a write field.
