Inclusive $B$ decays, lifetimes, and $|V_{cb}|$: a unified heavy-quark expansion analysis

We present a global HQE analysis of inclusive semileptonic $\bar{B} \to X_c l \bar ν_\ell$ moments, partial branching fractions, and $B^+$, $B^0$ lifetime observables. Our fit setup follows a new approach where perturbative scales are treated as correlated nuisance parameters, while missing higher-order power corrections are assessed through order-by-order fits up to $O(1/m_b^5)$. In the default scenario, we find $|V_{cb}| = (42.32 \pm 0.28|_{\rm fit} \pm 0.10|_{\rm h.o.})\times 10^{-3} = (42.32 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\bar B \to X_c \ell \bar ν_\ell) = (10.91 \pm 0.11|_{\rm fit} \pm 0.21|_{\rm h.o.})\%$. For the lifetimes we obtain $τ_{B^+} = 1.89^{+0.04}_{-0.22}$ ps and $τ_{B^0} = 1.74^{+0.03}_{-0.23}$ ps, where the strongly asymmetric uncertainty is dominated by the perturbative scale variation of the non-leptonic width. Our predictions are in agreement with previous predictions and the corresponding widths lie $1.1$-$1.2,σ$ below the measurements. For the lifetime ratio, we find $τ_{B^+}/τ_{B^0} = 1.082^{+0.031}_{-0.013}$ which agrees with experiment. For the full dataset of $q^2, E_\ell$ and $M_X$ moments, we obtain a poor fit quality, which we investigate using a leave-one-out study. In light of the persisting $|V_{cb}|$ puzzle, new correlated moment measurements as well as updated branching ratio measurements are highly encouraged.

Extending the Kinetic Mass to Higher Orders in $1/m_Q$

Currently, the kinetic mass is defined in terms of the pole mass and operators at order $1/m_Q^2$, which are known to N$^3$LO accuracy in $α_s$. At the same time, the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) for inclusive semileptonic decays is known up to and including terms of order $1/m_Q^5$. Therefore, it is desirable to extend the definition of the kinetic mass to higher orders in $1/m_Q$. The original kinetic mass is based on the hadron-mass formula in Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET). However, the HQE is formulated in terms of matrix elements defined in full QCD to avoid the appearance of non-local matrix elements. To avoid this, we develop a definition of the kinetic mass rooted in full QCD. Starting from the hadron-mass formula derived from the energy-momentum tensor of full QCD, we define a relation between a general mass and the pole mass. Using a simple cut-off scheme, we compute a generalized kinetic mass at one loop to all powers of $1/m_Q$, which reproduces the well-known results for the kinetic mass up to $1/m_Q^2$. Our approach opens the road to a consistent use of the kinetic mass at higher-orders in the heavy quark expansion.

Inclusive Semileptonic $b \to c \ell \barν$ Decays to Order $1/m_b^5$

Inclusive semileptonic $B\to X_c \ell\barν$ decays can be described in the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) and allow for a precision determination of the CKM element $|V_{cb}|$. We calculate the terms of $1/m_b^5$ and derive a ``trace formula'' which allows for the computation of the decay rate and kinematic moments of the spectrum up to this order in the HQE. We focus specifically on the reparametrization invariant (RPI) dilepton invariant mass $q^2$ moments of the spectrum, which depend on a reduced set of HQE parameters. At this order, ``intrinsic charm'' (IC) contributions proportional to $1/(m_b^3m_c^2)$ enter, which are numerically expected to be sizeable. Using the ``lowest-lying state saturation ansatz'' (LLSA), we estimate the size of these contributions. Within this approximation, we observe a partial cancellation between the IC and the ``genuine'' $1/m_b^5$ contributions, resulting in a small overall contribution.

Pushing the Heavy Quark Expansion for $b\to cl\barν$ to Higher Order in $1/m_b$

The Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) is the major tool to perform calculations for inclusive semileptonic $B\to X_cl\barν$ and, consequently, for precision determinations of the CKM matrix element $V_{cb}$. To further improve precision, we pushed the expansion to $1/m_b^5$ to include even higher order terms in the HQE. Notably, at $1/m_b^5$, ``intrinsic charm'' (IC) contributions proportional to $1/(m_b^3m_c^2)$ occur, which are numerically expected to be sizeable. We will therefore firstly discuss the determination of a reduced set of HQE parameters at $1/m_b^5$, employing Reparametrisation Invariance (RPI) to this end. Consequently, we will show how the IC and ``genuine" $1/m_b^5$ contribute to the different kinematical moments of $B\to X_cl\barν$, focusing in this work on the lepton energy $E_l$ moments. Using the ``lowest-lying state saturation ansatz'' (LLSA), we estimate the size of these contributions and observe a partial cancellation between the IC and ``genuine'' $1/m_b^5$ contributions, leading to an overall small contribution.

Kolya: an open-source package for inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays

We introduce the code kolya, an open-source tool for phenomenological analyses of inclusive semileptonic $B$ meson decays. It contains a library to compute predictions for the total rate and various kinematic moments within the framework of the heavy quark expansion, utilizing the so-called kinetic scheme. The library currently includes power corrections up to $1/m_b^5$. All available QCD perturbative corrections are implemented via interpolation grids for fast numerical evaluation. We also include effects from new physics parameterised as Wilson coefficients of dimension-six operators in the weak effective theory below the electroweak scale. The library is interfaced to CRunDec for easy evaluation of the quark masses and strong coupling constant at different renormalization scales. The library is developed in Python and does not require compilation. It can be used in an interactive Jupyter notebook session.

Quark-Hadron Duality Violations and Higher-Order $1/m_b$ Corrections in Inclusive Semileptonic $B$ Decays

The theoretical description and data for inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays have reached incredible precision. This motivated us to re-animate the discussion of possible Quark-Hadron Duality violations. There seems that there is currently no evidence of a failure of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) used to compute observables for these decays. However, we might arrive at a point where an asymptotic behaviour of the HQE would limit a further increase of precision. We discuss this possibility and suggest a simple model, which can be used to study the effects of higher orders in the $1/m_b$ expansion and possible quark-hadron duality violations. We devise observables sensitive only to such higher-order effects to test the behaviour of the HQE. Using these observables we obtain a first estimate of possible quark-hadron duality violations using the measured $q^2$ moments.
