Laser wakefield driven generation of isolated CEP-tunable intense sub-cycle pulses

Sources of intense, ultra-short electromagnetic pulses enable applications such as attosecond pulse generation, control of electron motion in solids and the observation of reaction dynamics at the electronic level. For such applications both high-intensity and carrier envelope phase~(CEP) tunability are beneficial, yet hard to obtain with current methods. In this work we present a new scheme for generation of isolated CEP-tunable intense sub-cycle pulses with central frequencies that range from the midinfrared to the ultraviolet. It utilizes an intense laser pulse which drives a wake in a plasma, co-propagating with a long-wavelength seed pulse. The moving electron density spike of the wake amplifies the seed and forms a sub-cycle pulse. Controlling the CEP of the seed pulse, or the delay between driver and seed leads to CEP-tunability, while frequency tunability can be achieved by adjusting the laser and plasma parameters. Our 2D and 3D Particle-In-Cell simulations predict laser-to-sub-cycle-pulse conversion efficiencies up to 1%, resulting in relativistically intense sub-cycle pulses.

Optical Bloch modeling of few-cycle laser-induced electron dynamics in dielectrics

We develop a new model of laser-matter interaction based on Optical Bloch Equations, which includes photo-ionization, impact ionization, and various relaxation processes typical of dielectric materials. This approach is able to describe the temporal evolution of the electron dynamics in the conduction band driven by few-cycle laser pulses of any wavelength. Moreover, the nonlinear polarization response of both centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric materials can be described while ensuring the proper selection rules for the harmonics emission.

Terahertz vortex wave generation in air plasma by two-color femtosecond laser pulses

We investigate the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses with phase singularity from air plasmas created by fundamental and second harmonic laser pulses. We show that when the second harmonic beam carries a vortex charge, the THz beam acquires a vortex structure as well. A generic feature of such THz vortex is that the intensity is modulated along the azimuthal angle, which can be attributed to the spatially varying relative phase difference between the two pump harmonics. Fully space and time resolved numerical simulations reveal that transverse instabilities of the pump further affect the emitted THz field along nonlinear propagation, which produces additional singularities resulting in a rich vortex structure. The predicted intensity modulation is experimentally demonstrated with a thermal camera, in excellent agreement with simulation results. The presence of phase singularities in the experiment is revealed by astigmatic transformation of the beam using a cylindrical mirror.

Electron beam driven generation of frequency-tunable isolated relativistic sub-cycle pulses

We propose a novel scheme for frequency-tunable sub-cycle electromagnetic pulse generation. To this end a pump electron beam is injected into an electromagnetic seed pulse as the latter is reflected by a mirror. The electron beam is shown to be able to amplify the field of the seed pulse while upshifting its central frequency and reducing its number of cycles. We demonstrate the amplification by means of 1D and 2D particle-in-cell simulations. In order to explain and optimize the process, a model based on fluid theory is proposed. We estimate that using currently available electron beams and terahertz pulse sources, our scheme is able to produce mJ-strong mid-infrared sub-cycle pulses.

Broadband terahertz emission from two-color fs-laser-induced microplasmas

We investigate terahertz emission from two-color fs-laser-induced microplasmas. Under strongest focusing conditions, microplasmas are shown to act as point-sources for broadband terahertz-to-far-infrared radiation, where the emission bandwidth is determined by the plasma density. Semi-analytical modeling allows us to identify scaling laws with respect to important laser parameters. In particular, we find that the optical-to-THz conversion efficiency crucially depends on the focusing conditions. We use this insight to demonstrate by means of Maxwell-consistent 3D simulations, that for only 10-$μ$J laser energy a conversion efficiency well above $10^{-4}$ can be achieved.

Modelling arbitrarily shaped and tightly focused laser pulses in electromagnetic codes

Investigation of laser matter interaction with electromagnetic codes requires to implement sources for the electromagnetic fields. A way to do so is to prescribe the fields at the numerical box boundaries in order to achieve the desired fields inside the numerical box. Here we show that the often used paraxial approximation can lead to unexpected field profiles with strong impact on the laser matter interaction results. We propose an efficient numerical algorithm to compute the required laser boundary conditions consistent with the Maxwell's equations for arbitrarily shaped, tightly focused laser pulses.
