Values of finite distortion: Reshetnyak's theorem, the Liouville theorem, and the Lusin (N) -property

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a domain and $f \in W^{1,n}_{\text{loc}} (Ω,\mathbb{R}^n)$. We say that $f$ has a value of finite distortion at $y_0 \in \mathbb{R}^n$ if there exist measurable functions $K \colon Ω\to [0,\infty)$ and $Σ\in L^1_{\text{loc}} (Ω)$ such that \[ \lvert Df(x) \rvert^n \le K(x) \det Df (x) + Σ(x) \lvert f(x)-y_0 \rvert^n \quad \text{for a.e. } x \in Ω. \] This notion unifies the classical theory of mappings of finite distortion with the recently introduced theory of quasiregular values. Under sharp integrability assumptions on $K$ and $Σ$, we establish single-value analogues of Reshetnyak's theorem and the Liouville theorem. We also prove that mappings satisfying a more general distortion inequality with defect preserve sets of Lebesgue measure zero.

Quasiregular values and cohomology

We prove that the recently shown cohomological obstruction for quasiregular ellipticity has a generalization in the theory of quasiregular values. More specifically, if $M$ is a closed, connected, and oriented Riemannian $n$-manifold, and there exists a map $f \in C(\mathbb{R}^n, M) \cap W^{1,n}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n, M)$ satisfying $\lvert Df(x) \rvert^n \le K J_f(x) + \operatorname{dist}^n(f(x), f(x_0)) Σ(x)$ a.e. in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $K \ge 1$, $x_0 \in \mathbb{R}^n$, and $Σ\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^n) \cap L^{1+\varepsilon}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$, then the real singular cohomology ring $H^*(M; \mathbb{R})$ of $M$ embeds into the exterior algebra $\wedge^* \mathbb{R}^n$ in a graded manner. We also show a partial version of our result for $M$ with dimension greater than $n$, by using a class of maps that combines properties of quasiregular values and quasiregular curves.

Continuity for Sobolev mappings with null Lagrangian bounds

We prove the continuity of Sobolev functions $φ\in W^{1,n}_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$, $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, that satisfy \[ \lvert\nabla φ(x)\rvert^n \le K(x)\bigl(\langle \nabla φ(x), ξ(x)\rangle + A(x)\bigr), \] where $ξ\in L_{\mathrm{loc}}^{n/(n-1)}(Ω, \mathbb{R}^n)$ is weakly divergence-free, and $K \in L^p_{\mathrm{loc}} (Ω)$, $A \in L^q_{\mathrm{loc}} (Ω)$ are non-negative with $p^{-1}+q^{-1}<1$. The result is applicable to a broad class of differential inequalities of null Lagrangian type. As our principal application, we obtain a sharp continuity theorem for $f \in W^{1,n}_{\mathrm{loc}} (Ω, \mathbb{R}^n)$ satisfying the distortion inequality with defect $\lvert Df(x)\rvert^n \le K(x)\det Df(x) + Σ(x)$; this result is new even in the planar case, and closes a significant gap between existing methods and known counterexamples. The proof relies on an overlooked Sobolev-type inequality formulated in terms of measures of superlevel sets.

Warped products, solid hyperbolic fillings, and the identity $D^{1,p} = N^{1,p} + \mathbb{R}$

We construct a large class of metric measure spaces $Z$ which satisfy the identity $D^{1,p}(Z) = N^{1,p}(Z) + \mathbb{R}$, i.e.\ any measurable function $u \colon Z \to \mathbb{R}$ with an $L^p$-integrable upper gradient is a constant term away from being $L^p$-integrable. To do so, we construct a family of hyperbolic fillings $\mathbb{H}_{α, β}(Y)$, $α, β\in (0, \infty)$, of a metric measure space $Y$, via a warped product of $Y$ with an exponentially weighted positive real line. We then show that for certain classes of $Y$, the above identity is satisfied for $Z=\mathbb{H}_{α,β}(Y)$ when $1\le p\le β/α$. We also show that under mild assumptions on $Y$, the warped product $\mathbb{H}_{α, β}(Y)$ is Gromov hyperbolic as a metric space and the Gromov boundary of $\mathbb{H}_{α, β}(Y)$ is quasisymmetric to $Y$.

A Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu -type characterization for Sobolev differential forms

Given a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, a result by Bourgain, Brezis, and Mironescu characterizes when a function $f \in L^p(Ω)$ is in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(Ω)$ based on the limiting behavior of its Besov seminorms. We prove a direct analogue of this result which characterizes when a differential $k$-form $ω\in L^p(\wedge^k T^* Ω)$ has a weak exterior derivative $dω\in L^p(\wedge^{k+1} T^* Ω)$, where the analogue of the Besov seminorm that our result uses is based on integration over simplices.

On homogeneous Newton-Sobolev spaces of functions in metric measure spaces of uniformly locally controlled geometry

We study the large-scale behavior of Newton-Sobolev functions on complete, connected, proper, separable metric measure spaces equipped with a Borel measure $μ$ with $μ(X) = \infty$ and $0 < μ(B(x, r)) < \infty$ for all $x \in X$ and $r \in (0, \infty)$ Our objective is to understand the relationship between the Dirichlet space $D^{1,p}(X)$, defined using upper gradients, and the Newton-Sobolev space $N^{1,p}(X)+\mathbb{R}$, for $1\le p<\infty$. We show that when $X$ is of uniformly locally $p$-controlled geometry, these two spaces do not coincide under a wide variety of geometric and potential theoretic conditions. We also show that when the metric measure space is the standard hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ with $n\ge 2$, these two spaces coincide precisely when $1\le p\le n-1$. We also provide additional characterizations of when a function in $D^{1,p}(X)$ is in $N^{1,p}(X)+\mathbb{R}$ in the case that the two spaces do not coincide.

Linear distortion and rescaling for quasiregular values

Sobolev mappings exhibiting only pointwise quasiregularity-type bounds have arisen in various applications, leading to a recently developed theory of quasiregular values. In this article, we show that by using rescaling, one obtains a direct bridge between this theory and the classical theory of quasiregular maps. More precisely, we prove that a non-constant mapping $f \colon Ω\to \mathbb{R}^n$ with a $(K, Σ)$-quasiregular value at $f(x_0)$ can be rescaled at $x_0$ to a non-constant $K$-quasiregular mapping. Our proof of this fact involves establishing a quasiregular values -version of the linear distortion bound of quasiregular mappings. A quasiregular values variant of the small $K$ -theorem is obtained as an immediate corollary of our main result.

Quasiregular values and Rickman's Picard theorem

We prove a far-reaching generalization of Rickman's Picard theorem for a surprisingly large class of mappings, based on the recently developed theory of quasiregular values. Our results are new even in the planar case.

Cheeger's differentiation theorem via the multilinear Kakeya inequality

Suppose that $(X,d,μ)$ is a metric measure space of finite Hausdorff dimension and that, for every Lipschitz $f \colon X \to \mathbb R$, $\operatorname{Lip}(f,\cdot)$ is dominated by every upper gradient of $f$. We show that $X$ is a Lipschitz differentiability space, and the differentiable structure of $X$ has dimension at most $\dim_{\mathrm{H}} X$. Since our assumptions are satisfied whenever $X$ is doubling and satisfies a Poincaré inequality, we thus obtain a new proof of Cheeger's generalisation of Rademacher's theorem. Our approach uses Guth's multilinear Kakeya inequality for neighbourhoods of Lipschitz graphs to show that any non-trivial measure with $n$ independent Alberti representations has Hausdorff dimension at least $n$.

Mappings of generalized finite distortion and continuity

We study continuity properties of Sobolev mappings $f \in W_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1,n} (Ω, \mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \ge 2$, that satisfy the following generalized finite distortion inequality \[\lvert Df(x)\rvert^n \leq K(x) J_f(x) + Σ(x)\] for almost every $x \in \mathbb{R}^n$. Here $K \colon Ω\to [1, \infty)$ and $Σ\colon Ω\to [0, \infty)$ are measurable functions. Note that when $Σ\equiv 0$, we recover the class of mappings of finite distortion, which are always continuous. The continuity of arbitrary solutions, however, turns out to be an intricate question. We fully solve the continuity problem in the case of bounded distortion $K \in L^\infty (Ω)$, where a sharp condition for continuity is that $Σ$ is in the Zygmund space $Σ\log^μ(e + Σ) \in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$ for some $μ> n-1$. We also show that one can slightly relax the boundedness assumption on $K$ to an exponential class $\exp(λK) \in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$ with $λ> n+1$, and still obtain continuous solutions when $Σ\log^μ(e + Σ) \in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$ with $μ> λ$. On the other hand, for all $p, q \in [1, \infty]$ with $p^{-1} + q^{-1} = 1$, we construct a discontinuous solution with $K \in L^p_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$ and $Σ/K \in L^q_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$, including an example with $Σ\in L^\infty_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$ and $K \in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(Ω)$.

On the Moduli of Lipschitz Homology Classes

We define a type of modulus $\operatorname{dMod}_p$ for Lipschitz surfaces based on $L^p$-integrable measurable differential forms, generalizing the vector modulus of Aikawa and Ohtsuka. We show that this modulus satisfies a homological duality theorem, where for Hölder conjugate exponents $p, q \in (1, \infty)$, every relative Lipschitz $k$-homology class $c$ has a unique dual Lipschitz $(n-k)$-homology class $c'$ such that $\operatorname{dMod}_p^{1/p}(c) \operatorname{dMod}_q^{1/q}(c') = 1$ and the Poincaré dual of $c$ maps $c'$ to 1. As $\operatorname{dMod}_p$ is larger than the classical surface modulus $\operatorname{Mod}_p$, we immediately recover a more general version of the estimate $\operatorname{Mod}_p^{1/p}(c) \operatorname{Mod}_q^{1/q}(c') \leq 1$, which appears in works by Freedman and He and by Lohvansuu. Our theory is formulated in the general setting of Lipschitz Riemannian manifolds, though our results appear new in the smooth setting as well. We also provide a characterization of closed and exact Sobolev forms on Lipschitz manifolds based on integration over Lipschitz $k$-chains.

A single-point Reshetnyak's theorem

We prove a single-value version of Reshetnyak's theorem. Namely, if a non-constant map $f \in W^{1,n}_{\text{loc}}(Ω, \mathbb{R}^n)$ from a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ satisfies the estimate $\lvert Df(x) \rvert^n \leq K J_f(x) + Σ(x) \lvert f(x) - y_0 \rvert^n $ for some $K \geq 1$, $y_0\in \mathbb{R}^n$ and $Σ\in L^{1+\varepsilon}_{\text{loc}}(Ω)$, then $f^{-1}\{y_0\}$ is discrete, the local index $i(x, f)$ is positive in $f^{-1}\{y_0\}$, and every neighborhood of a point of $f^{-1}\{y_0\}$ is mapped to a neighborhood of $y_0$. Assuming this estimate for a fixed $K$ at every $y_0 \in \mathbb{R}^n$ is equivalent to assuming that the map $f$ is $K$-quasiregular, even if the choice of $Σ$ is different for each $y_0$. Since the estimate also yields a single-value Liouville theorem, it hence appears to be a good pointwise definition of $K$-quasiregularity. As a corollary of our single-value Reshetnyak's theorem, we obtain a higher-dimensional version of the argument principle that played a key part in the solution to the Calderón problem.

Fibers of monotone maps of finite distortion

We study topologically monotone surjective $W^{1,n}$-maps of finite distortion $f \colon Ω\to Ω'$, where $Ω, Ω' $ are domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 2$. If the outer distortion function $K_f \in L_{\mathrm{loc}}^{p}(Ω)$ with $p \geq n-1$, then any such map $f$ is known to be homeomorphic, and hence the fibers $f^{-1}\{y\}$ are singletons. We show that as the exponent of integrability $p$ of the distortion function $K_f$ increases in the range $1/(n-1) \leq p < n-1$, then the fibers $f^{-1}\{y\}$ of $f$ start satisfying increasingly strong homological limitations. We also give a Sobolev realization of a topological example by Bing of a monotone $f \colon \mathbb{R}^3 \to \mathbb{R}^3$ with homologically nontrivial fibers, and show that this example has $K_f \in L^{1/2 - \varepsilon}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for all $\varepsilon > 0$.

Notes on quasiregular maps between Riemannian manifolds

These notes provide an exposition on obtaining the well-known standard results of quasiregular maps on Riemannian manifolds, given the corresponding theory in the Euclidean setting. We recall several different approaches to first-order Sobolev spaces between Riemannian manifolds, and show that they result in equivalent definitions of quasiregular maps. We explain how e.g. Reshetnyak's theorem, degree and local index theory, and the quasiregular change of variables formula are transferred into the manifold setting from Euclidean spaces. Finally, we conclude with a proof of the basic fact that pull-backs with quasiregular maps preserve Sobolev differential forms of the conformal exponent

Analytic characterization of monotone Hopf-harmonics

We study solutions of the inner-variational equation associated with the Dirichlet energy in the plane, given homeomorphic Sobolev boundary data. We prove that such a solution is monotone if and only if its Jacobian determinant does not change sign. These solutions, called monotone Hopf-harmonics, are a natural alternative to harmonic homeomorphisms. Examining the topological behavior of a solution (not a priori monotone) on the trajectories of Hopf quadratic differentials plays a sizable role in our arguments.

On the heterogeneous distortion inequality

We study Sobolev mappings $f \in W_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1,n} (\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \ge 2$, that satisfy the heterogeneous distortion inequality \[\left|Df(x)\right|^n \leq K J_f(x) + σ^n(x) \left|f(x)\right|^n\] for almost every $x \in \mathbb{R}^n$. Here $K \in [1, \infty)$ is a constant and $σ\geq 0$ is a function in $L^n_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Although we recover the class of $K$-quasiregular mappings when $σ\equiv 0$, the theory of arbitrary solutions is significantly more complicated, partly due to the unavailability of a robust degree theory for non-quasiregular solutions. Nonetheless, we obtain a Liouville-type theorem and the sharp Hölder continuity estimate for all solutions, provided that $σ\in L^{n-\varepsilon}(\mathbb{R}^n) \cap L^{n+\varepsilon}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for some $\varepsilon >0$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question of Astala, Iwaniec and Martin.

Conformally formal manifolds and the uniformly quasiregular non-ellipticity of $(\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^2) \operatorname{\#} (\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^2)$

We show that the manifold $(\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^2) \operatorname{\#} (\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^2)$ does not admit a non-constant non-injective uniformly quasiregular self-map. This answers a question of Martin, Mayer, and Peltonen, and provides the first example of a quasiregularly elliptic manifold which is not uniformly quasiregularly elliptic. To obtain the result, we introduce conformally formal manifolds, which are closed smooth $n$-manifolds $M$ admitting a measurable conformal structure $[g]$ for which the $(n/k)$-harmonic $k$-forms of the structure $[g]$ form an algebra. This is a conformal counterpart to the existing study of geometrically formal manifolds. We show that, similarly as in the geometrically formal theory, the real cohomology ring $H^*(M; \mathbb{R})$ of a conformally formal $n$-manifold $M$ admits an embedding of algebras $Φ\colon H^*(M; \mathbb{R}) \hookrightarrow \wedge^* \mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that uniformly quasiregularly elliptic manifolds $M$ are conformally formal in a stronger sense, in which the wedge product is replaced with a conformally scaled Clifford product. For this stronger version of conformal formality, the image of $Φ$ is closed under the Euclidean Clifford product of $\wedge^* \mathbb{R}^n$, which in turn is impossible for $M = (\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^2) \operatorname{\#} (\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^2)$.
