Gauge field marginal of an Abelian Higgs model

We study the gauge field marginal of an Abelian Higgs model with Villain action defined on a 2D lattice in finite volume. Our first main result, which holds for gauge theories on arbitrary finite graphs and does not assume that the structure group is Abelian, is a loop expansion of the Radon--Nikodym derivative of the law of the gauge field marginal with respect to that of the pure gauge theory. This expansion is similar to the one of Seiler but holds in greater generality and uses a different graph theoretic approach. Furthermore, we show ultraviolet stability for the gauge field marginal of the model in a fixed gauge. More specifically, we show that moments of the H{ö}lder--Besov-type norms introduced in arXiv:1808.09196 are bounded uniformly in the lattice spacing. This latter result relies on a quantitative diamagnetic inequality that in turn follows from the loop expansion and elementary properties of Gaussian random variables.

Algebraic groups in non-commutative probability theory revisited

The role of coalgebras as well as algebraic groups in non-commutative probability has long been advocated by the school of von Waldenfels and Schürmann. Another algebraic approach was introduced more recently, based on shuffle and pre-Lie calculus, and results in another construction of groups of characters encoding the behaviour of states. Comparing the two, the first approach, recast recently in a general categorical language by Manzel and Schürmann, can be seen as largely driven by the theory of universal products, whereas the second construction builds on Hopf algebras and a suitable algebraization of the combinatorics of noncrossing set partitions. Although both address the same phenomena, moving between the two viewpoints is not obvious. We present here an attempt to unify the two approaches by making explicit the Hopf algebraic connections between them. Our presentation, although relying largely on classical ideas as well as results closely related to Manzel and Schürmann's aforementioned work, is nevertheless original on several points and fills a gap in the non-commutative probability literature. In particular, we systematically use the language and techniques of algebraic groups together with shuffle group techniques to prove that two notions of algebraic groups naturally associated with free, respectively Boolean and monotone, probability theories identify. We also obtain explicit formulas for various Hopf algebraic structures and detail arguments that had been left implicit in the literature.

Stochastic quantisation of Yang-Mills-Higgs in 3D

We define a state space and a Markov process associated to the stochastic quantisation equation of Yang-Mills-Higgs (YMH) theories. The state space $\mathcal{S}$ is a nonlinear metric space of distributions, elements of which can be used as initial conditions for the (deterministic and stochastic) YMH flow with good continuity properties. Using gauge covariance of the deterministic YMH flow, we extend gauge equivalence $\sim$ to $\mathcal{S}$ and thus define a quotient space of "gauge orbits" $\mathfrak{O}$. We use the theory of regularity structures to prove local in time solutions to the renormalised stochastic YMH flow. Moreover, by leveraging symmetry arguments in the small noise limit, we show that there is a unique choice of renormalisation counterterms such that these solutions are gauge covariant in law. This allows us to define a canonical Markov process on $\mathfrak{O}$ (up to a potential finite time blow-up) associated to the stochastic YMH flow.

Rough path theory

The theory of rough paths arose from a desire to establish continuity properties of ordinary differential equations involving terms of low regularity. While essentially an analytic theory, its main motivation and applications are in stochastic analysis, where it has given a new perspective on Itô calculus and a meaning to stochastic differential equations driven by irregular paths outside the setting of semi-martingales. In this survey, we present some of the main ideas that enter rough path theory. We discuss complementary notions of solutions for rough differential equations and the related notion of path signature, and give several applications and generalisations of the theory.

Feature Engineering with Regularity Structures

We investigate the use of models from the theory of regularity structures as features in machine learning tasks. A model is a polynomial function of a space-time signal designed to well-approximate solutions to partial differential equations (PDEs), even in low regularity regimes. Models can be seen as natural multi-dimensional generalisations of signatures of paths; our work therefore aims to extend the recent use of signatures in data science beyond the context of time-ordered data. We provide a flexible definition of a model feature vector associated to a space-time signal, along with two algorithms which illustrate ways in which these features can be combined with linear regression. We apply these algorithms in several numerical experiments designed to learn solutions to PDEs with a given forcing and boundary data. Our experiments include semi-linear parabolic and wave equations with forcing, and Burgers' equation with no forcing. We find an advantage in favour of our algorithms when compared to several alternative methods. Additionally, in the experiment with Burgers' equation, we find non-trivial predictive power when noise is added to the observations.

Norm inflation for a non-linear heat equation with Gaussian initial conditions

We consider a non-linear heat equation $\partial_t u = Δu + B(u,Du)+P(u)$ posed on the $d$-dimensional torus, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree at most $3$ and $B$ is a bilinear map that is not a total derivative. We show that, if the initial condition $u_0$ is taken from a sequence of smooth Gaussian fields with a specified covariance, then $u$ exhibits norm inflation with high probability. A consequence of this result is that there exists no Banach space of distributions which carries the Gaussian free field on the 3D torus and to which the DeTurck-Yang-Mills heat flow extends continuously, which complements recent well-posedness results in arXiv:2111.10652 and arXiv:2201.03487. Another consequence is that the (deterministic) non-linear heat equation exhibits norm inflation, and is thus locally ill-posed, at every point in the Besov space $B^{-1/2}_{\infty,\infty}$; the space $B^{-1/2}_{\infty,\infty}$ is an endpoint since the equation is locally well-posed for $B^η_{\infty,\infty}$ for every $η>-\frac12$.

Wilson-Itô diffusions

We introduce Wilson-Itô diffusions, a class of random fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$ that change continuously along a scale parameter via a Markovian dynamics with local coefficients. Described via forward-backward stochastic differential equations, their observables naturally form a pre-factorization algebra à la Costello-Gwilliam. We argue that this is a new non-perturbative quantization method applicable also to gauge theories and independent of a path-integral formulation. Whenever a path-integral is available, this approach reproduces the setting of Wilson-Polchinski flow equations.

Deterministic homogenization under optimal moment assumptions for fast-slow systems. Part 2

We consider deterministic homogenization for discrete-time fast-slow systems of the form $$ X_{k+1} = X_k + n^{-1}a_n(X_k,Y_k) + n^{-1/2}b_n(X_k,Y_k)\;, \quad Y_{k+1} = T_nY_k\;$$ and give conditions under which the dynamics of the slow equations converge weakly to an Itô diffusion $X$ as $n\to\infty$. The drift and diffusion coefficients of the limiting stochastic differential equation satisfied by $X$ are given explicitly. This extends the results of [Kelly-Melbourne, J. Funct. Anal. 272 (2017) 4063--4102] from the continuous-time case to the discrete-time case. Moreover, our methods (càdlàg $p$-variation rough paths) work under optimal moment assumptions. Combined with parallel developments on martingale approximations for families of nonuniformly expanding maps in Part 1 by Korepanov, Kosloff & Melbourne, we obtain optimal homogenization results when $T_n$ is such a family of maps.

Stochastic quantisation of Yang-Mills

We review two works arXiv:2006.04987 and arXiv:2201.03487 which study the stochastic quantisation equations of Yang-Mills on two and three dimensional Euclidean space with finite volume. The main result of these works is that one can renormalise the 2D and 3D stochastic Yang-Mills heat flow so that the dynamic becomes gauge covariant in law. Furthermore, there is a state space of distributional $1$-forms $\mathcal{S}$ to which gauge equivalence $\sim$ extends and such that the renormalised stochastic Yang-Mills heat flow projects to a Markov process on the quotient space of gauge orbits $\mathcal{S}/{\sim}$. In this review, we give unified statements of the main results of these works, highlight differences in the methods, and point out a number of open problems.

Signature moments to characterize laws of stochastic processes

The sequence of moments of a vector-valued random variable can characterize its law. We study the analogous problem for path-valued random variables, that is stochastic processes, by using so-called robust signature moments. This allows us to derive a metric of maximum mean discrepancy type for laws of stochastic processes and study the topology it induces on the space of laws of stochastic processes. This metric can be kernelized using the signature kernel which allows to efficiently compute it. As an application, we provide a non-parametric two-sample hypothesis test for laws of stochastic processes.

Hopf and pre-Lie algebras in regularity structures

These lecture notes aim to present the algebraic theory of regularity structures as developed in arXiv:1303.5113, arXiv:1610.08468, and arXiv:1711.10239. The main aim of this theory is to build a systematic approach to renormalisation of singular SPDEs; together with complementary analytic results, these works give a general solution theory for a wide class of semilinear parabolic singular SPDEs in the subcritical regime. We demonstrate how "positive" and "negative" renormalisation can be described using interacting Hopf algebras, and how the renormalised non-linearities in SPDEs can be computed. For the latter, of crucial importance is a pre-Lie structure on non-linearities on which the negative renormalisation group acts through pre-Lie morphisms. To show the main aspects of these results without introducing many notations and assumptions, we focus on a special case of the general theory in which there is only one equation and one noise. These lectures notes are an expansion of the material presented at a minicourse with the same title at the Master Class and Workshop "Higher Structures Emerging from Renormalisation" at the ESI, Vienna, in November 2021.

Langevin dynamic for the 2D Yang-Mills measure

We define a natural state space and Markov process associated to the stochastic Yang-Mills heat flow in two dimensions. To accomplish this we first introduce a space of distributional connections for which holonomies along sufficiently regular curves (Wilson loop observables) and the action of an associated group of gauge transformations are both well-defined and satisfy good continuity properties. The desired state space is obtained as the corresponding space of orbits under this group action and is shown to be a Polish space when equipped with a natural Hausdorff metric. To construct the Markov process we show that the stochastic Yang-Mills heat flow takes values in our space of connections and use the "DeTurck trick" of introducing a time dependent gauge transformation to show invariance, in law, of the solution under gauge transformations. Our main tool for solving for the Yang-Mills heat flow is the theory of regularity structures and along the way we also develop a "basis-free" framework for applying the theory of regularity structures in the context of vector-valued noise - this provides a conceptual framework for interpreting several previous constructions and we expect this framework to be of independent interest.

A Stochastic Model of Chemorepulsion with Additive Noise and Nonlinear Sensitivity

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) model for chemorepulsion, with non-linear sensitivity on the one-dimensional torus. We show that for any suitable initial data there exists a pathwise unique, global solution to the SPDE. Furthermore we show that the associated semi-group is Markov and possesses a unique invariant measure, supported on a Hölder-Besov space of positive regularity, which the solution law converges to exponentially fast. We also establish tail bounds on the invariant measure that are heavier than Gaussian when measured using any $L^p$ norm.

Renormalising SPDEs in regularity structures

The formalism recently introduced in arXiv:1610.08468 allows one to assign a regularity structure, as well as a corresponding "renormalisation group", to any subcritical system of semilinear stochastic PDEs. Under very mild additional assumptions, it was then shown in arXiv:1612.08138 that large classes of driving noises exhibiting the relevant small-scale behaviour can be lifted to such a regularity structure in a robust way, following a renormalisation procedure reminiscent of the BPHZ procedure arising in perturbative QFT. The present work completes this programme by constructing an action of the renormalisation group onto a suitable class of stochastic PDEs which is intertwined with its action on the corresponding space of models. This shows in particular that solutions constructed from the BPHZ lift of a smooth driving noise coincide with the classical solutions of a modified PDE. This yields a very general black box type local existence and stability theorem for a wide class of singular nonlinear SPDEs.

Superdiffusive limits for deterministic fast-slow dynamical systems

We consider deterministic fast-slow dynamical systems on $\mathbb{R}^m\times Y$ of the form \[ \begin{cases} x_{k+1}^{(n)} = x_k^{(n)} + n^{-1} a(x_k^{(n)}) + n^{-1/α} b(x_k^{(n)}) v(y_k)\;,\quad y_{k+1} = f(y_k)\;, \end{cases} \] where $α\in(1,2)$. Under certain assumptions we prove convergence of the $m$-dimensional process $X_n(t)= x_{\lfloor nt \rfloor}^{(n)}$ to the solution of the stochastic differential equation \[ \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d} X = a(X)\mathop{}\!\mathrm{d} t + b(X) \diamond \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d} L_α \; , \] where $L_α$ is an $α$-stable Lévy process and $\diamond$ indicates that the stochastic integral is in the Marcus sense. In addition, we show that our assumptions are satisfied for intermittent maps $f$ of Pomeau-Manneville type.

Yang-Mills measure on the two-dimensional torus as a random distribution

We introduce a space of distributional one-forms $Ω^1_α$ on the torus $\mathbf{T}^2$ for which holonomies along axis paths are well-defined and induce Hölder continuous functions on line segments. We show that there exists an $Ω^1_α$-valued random variable $A$ for which Wilson loop observables of axis paths coincide in law with the corresponding observables under the Yang-Mills measure in the sense of Lévy (2003). It holds furthermore that $Ω^1_α$ embeds into the Hölder-Besov space $\mathcal{C}^{α-1}$ for all $α\in(0,1)$, so that $A$ has the correct small scale regularity expected from perturbation theory. Our method is based on a Landau-type gauge applied to lattice approximations.

A Rough Path Perspective on Renormalization

We develop the algebraic theory of rough path translation. Particular attention is given to the case of branched rough paths, whose underlying algebraic structure (Connes-Kreimer, Grossman-Larson) makes it a useful model case of a regularity structure in the sense of Hairer. Pre-Lie structures are seen to play a fundamental rule which allow a direct understanding of the translated (i.e. renormalized) equation under consideration. This construction is also novel with regard to the algebraic renormalization theory for regularity structures due to Bruned--Hairer--Zambotti (2016), the links with which are discussed in detail.

Multiscale systems, homogenization, and rough paths

In recent years, substantial progress was made towards understanding convergence of fast-slow deterministic systems to stochastic differential equations. In contrast to more classical approaches, the assumptions on the fast flow are very mild. We survey the origins of this theory and then revisit and improve the analysis of Kelly-Melbourne [Ann. Probab. Volume 44, Number 1 (2016), 479-520], taking into account recent progress in $p$-variation and càdlàg rough path theory.
