Applications of Almost Stationarity I: Quantitative Growth of Injectivity Radius and Stück-Zimmer Theorem

Fraczyk and Gelander proved in \cite{FG} that for any simple Lie group $G$ of high rank and for every non-lattice discrete subgroup $Γ\leq G$, the injectivity radius of points in $G/Γ$ is unbounded, resolving a conjecture of Margulis. In this work we obtain an explicit lower bound on the growth rate of the maximal injectivity radius of points taken from growing balls in $G/Γ$. More explicitly, we prove that for any $R>0$, one can embed a ball of radius $c\log^{(4)}R$ in $G/Γ$ centered at some point $[g]\in G/Γ$ where $g$ is taken from $G_R$ and for some constant $c=c(G,Γ)$. In particular, we show that for a general discrete subgroup $Γ$, if the injectivity radius growth in $G/Γ$ is slower than $\log^{(4)}$, $Γ$ must be a lattice. Additionally, we give a new, shorter and simpler proof of the Nevo-Stück-Zimmer Theorem, saying that every action of a high rank simple group with property $(T)$ is either essentially free or essentially transitive. The results in this paper are obtained using the almost structure of measures from the accompanying paper, together with additional geometric considerations. As a step in the proof, we develop the following characterization for lattices. A discrete subgroup $Γ\leq G$ is a lattice if and only if there is a probability measure on $G/Γ$ which is sufficiently almost invariant under $G$. More precisely, suppose $Γ\leq G$ is a discrete subgroup for which there exists a probability measure $ν$ on $G/Γ$ for which $W_1^{b}(gν,ν)\leq \eps_0$ for some $\eps_0(Γ)>0$, then $Γ$ is a lattice.

The Structure of Almost Stationary Measures

Let $G$ be a higher-rank simple Lie group acting on a space $X$. A theorem of Nevo and Zimmer asserts that every ergodic stationary probability measure on $X$ is either $G$-invariant or admits a projective factor $G/Q$ for a proper parabolic subgroup $Q$. We develop a quantitative theory of stationary measures and prove an effective form of this dichotomy. We introduce notions of $\eps$-almost stationarity, $δ$-almost invariance and $δ$-almost projective factor, and show that every $\eps$-almost stationary measure is either $δ$-almost invariant or carries a $δ'$-almost projective factor, with $δ,δ'$ explicit in $\eps$ and depending only on $G$. No ergodicity, arithmeticity or Diophantine hypothesis is imposed, and the bounds are uniform over all $G$-spaces. The proof introduces several tools: the \emph{entropigeonhole method}, an entropy-based pigeonhole principle yielding a quantitative Mautner phenomenon; \emph{factor functions}, quantitative analogues of functions on homogeneous factor spaces; and a \emph{fast generation} dichotomy in the spirit of growth in groups. In a companion paper these are used to show, among other things, that a discrete subgroup of infinite covolume has injectivity radius at least $c\log^{(4)}r$ somewhere in the ball of radius $r$, which is an effective form of a theorem of Frączyk and Gelander.

Topology and dynamics of unimodular random hyperbolic manifolds

We investigate the relationship between the space of ends of a unimodular random hyperbolic manifold and the dynamics of its geodesic flow. We show that having two ends of infinite volume implies recurrence, while having infinitely many such ends implies positive drift and entropy. We also provide a transience criterion which applies to deterministic hyperbolic manifolds. Our method relies on studying Delaunay graphs over point processes and on the analytic notion of capacity.

Space-time boundaries for random walks and their application to operator algebras

We investigate the Martin boundary of the space-time Markov chain associated to a finitely supported random walk $(Γ, μ)$ with spectral radius $ρ$ and relate it to several classical compactifications of $Γ$. Assuming the strong ratio-limit property, we prove that the reduced ratio-limit compactification embeds naturally into the space-time Martin boundary. We introduce the $0$-Martin boundary, which governs the behaviour of $\infty$-harmonic functions, and show that the $0$-Martin kernels arise as rescaled limits of $λ$-Martin kernels as $λ\rightarrow 0$. For symmetric random walks on hyperbolic groups, the $0$-Martin boundary naturally covers the Gromov boundary, while the cover need not be injective in general. Our main structural theorem identifies the minimal space-time Martin boundary with the disjoint union of minimal $λ$-Martin boundaries over $λ\in [0, ρ^{-1}]$ with its natural pointwise topology. As an application, we show that the noncommutative Shilov boundary of the tensor algebra of the random walk $(Γ, μ)$ coincides with its Toeplitz $C^*$-algebra.

Stationary random subgroups in negative curvature

We show that discrete stationary random subgroups of isometry groups of Gromov hyperbolic spaces have full limit sets as well as critical exponents bounded from below. This information is used to answer a question of Gelander and show that a rank one locally symmetric space for which the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator is the same as that of its universal cover has unbounded injectivity radius.

Confined subgroups in groups with contracting elements

In this paper, we study the growth of confined subgroups through boundary actions of groups with contracting elements. We establish that the growth rate of a confined subgroup is strictly greater than half of the ambient growth rate in groups with purely exponential growth. Along the way, several results are obtained on the Hopf decomposition for boundary actions of subgroups with respect to conformal measures. In particular, we prove that confined subgroups are conservative, and examples of subgroups with nontrivial Hopf decomposition are constructed. We show a connection between Hopf decomposition and quotient growth and provide a dichotomy on quotient growth of Schreier graphs for subgroups in hyperbolic groups.

Dynamics of subgroups of mapping class groups

Let $\rm{Mod(S)}$ be the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$. Let $G$ be a non-elementary subgroup of $\rm{Mod(S)}$ so that the associated Bowen-Margulis measure is finite. In this paper, we give an asymptotic growth formula for $G$ with respect to the Teichmüller metric.

Ratio-limit boundaries for random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups

We study boundaries arising from limits of ratios of transition probabilities for random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups. We extend, as well as determine significant limitations of, a strategy employed by Woess for computing ratio-limit boundaries for the class of hyperbolic groups. On the one hand we employ results of the second and third authors to adapt this strategy to spectrally non-degenerate random walks, and show that the closure of minimal points in $R$-Martin boundary is the unique smallest invariant subspace in ratio-limit boundary. On the other hand we show that the general strategy can fail when the random walk is spectrally degenerate and adapted on a free product. Using our results, we are able to extend a theorem of the first author beyond the hyperbolic case and establish the existence of a co-universal quotient for Toeplitz C*-algebras arising from random walks which are spectrally non-degenerate on relatively hyperbolic groups. Finally, we exhibit an example of a relatively hyperbolic group carrying two random walks such that the ratio limit boundaries are not equivariantly homeomorphic and no two equivariant quotients of their respective Toeplitz C*-algebras are equivariantly $*$-isomorphic.

Stability phenomena for Martin boundaries of relatively hyperbolic groups

Let $Γ$ be a relatively hyperbolic group and let $μ$ be an admissible symmetric finitely supported probability measure on $Γ$. We extend Floyd-Ancona type inequalities up to the spectral radius of $μ$. We then show that when the parabolic subgroups are virtually abelian, the Martin boundary of the induced random walk on $Γ$ is stable in the sense of Picardello and Woess. We also define a notion of spectral degenerescence along parabolic subgroups and give a criterion for strong stability of the Martin boundary in terms of spectral degenerescence. We prove that this criterion is always satisfied in small rank. so that in particular, the Martin boundary of an admissible symmetric finitely supported probability measure on a geometrically finite Kleinian group of dimension at most 5 is always strongly stable.

Genericity of sublinearly Morse directions in CAT(0) spaces and the Teichmüller space

We show that the sublinearly Morse directions in the visual boundary of a rank-1 CAT(0) space with a geometric group action are generic in several commonly studied senses of the word, namely with respect to Patterson-Sullivan measures and stationary measures for random walks. We deduce that the sublinearly Morse boundary is a model of the Poisson boundary for finitely supported random walks on groups acting geometrically on rank-1 CAT (0) spaces. We prove an analogous result for mapping class group actions on Teichmüller space. Our main technical tool is a criterion, valid in any unique geodesic metric space, that says that any geodesic ray with sufficiently many (in a statistical sense) strongly contracting segments is sublinearly contracting.

Counting conjugacy classes in groups with contracting elements

In this paper, we derive an asymptotic formula for the number of conjugacy classes of elements in a class of statistically convex-cocompact actions with contracting elements. Denote by $\mathcal C(o, n)$ (resp. $\mathcal C'(o, n)$) the set of (resp. primitive) conjugacy classes of pointed length at most $n$ for a basepoint $o$. The main result is an asymptotic formula as follows: $$\sharp \mathcal C(o, n) \asymp \sharp \mathcal C'(o, n) \asymp \frac{\exp(ω(G)n)}{n}.$$ A similar formula holds for conjugacy classes using stable length. As a consequence of the formulae, the conjugacy growth series is transcendental for all non-elementary relatively hyperbolic groups, graphical small cancellation groups with finite components. As by-product of the proof, we establish several useful properties for an exponentially generic set of elements. In particular, it yields a positive answer to a question of J. Maher that an exponentially generic elements in mapping class groups have their Teichmüller axis contained in the principal stratum.

An embedding of the Morse boundary in the Martin boundary

We construct a one-to-one continuous map from the Morse boundary of a hierarchically hyperbolic group to its Martin boundary. This construction is based on deviation inequalities generalizing Ancona's work on hyperbolic groups. This provides a possibly new metrizable topology on the Morse boundary of such groups. We also prove that the Morse boundary has measure 0 with respect to the harmonic measure unless the group is hyperbolic.

Central limit theorems for counting measures in coarse negative curvature

We establish central limit theorems for an action of a group G on a hyperbolic space X with respect to the counting measure on a Cayley graph of G. Our techniques allow us to remove the usual assumptions of properness and smoothness of the space, or cocompactness of the action. We provide several applications which require our general framework, including to lengths of geodesics in geometrically finite manifolds and to intersection numbers with submanifolds.

Entropy and drift for word metric on relatively hyperbolic groups

We are interested in the Guivarc'h inequality for admissible random walks on finitely generated relatively hyperbolic groups, endowed with a word metric. We show that for random walks with finite super-exponential moment, if this inequality is an equality, then the Green distance is roughly similar to the word distance, generalizing results of Blach{è}re, Ha{ï}ssinsky and Mathieu for hyperbolic groups [4]. Our main application is for relatively hyperbolic groups with respect to virtually abelian subgroups of rank at least 2. We show that for such groups, the Guivarc'h inequality with respect to a word distance and a finitely supported random walk is always strict.

Entropy and drift for Gibbs measures on geometrically finite manifolds

We prove a generalization of the fundamental inequality of Guivarc'h relating entropy, drift and critical exponent to Gibbs measures on geometrically finite quotients of CAT(-1) metric spaces. For random walks with finite superexponential moment, we show that the equality is achieved if and only if the Gibbs density is equivalent to the hitting measure. As a corollary, if the action is not convex cocompact, any hitting measure is singular to any Gibbs density.

Critical exponents of invariant random subgroups in negative curvature

Let $X$ be a proper geodesic Gromov hyperbolic metric space and let $G$ be a cocompact group of isometries of $X$ admitting a uniform lattice. Let $d$ be the Hausdorff dimension of the Gromov boundary $\partial X$. We define the critical exponent $δ(μ)$ of any discrete invariant random subgroup $μ$ of the locally compact group $G$ and show that $δ(μ) > \frac{d}{2}$ in general and that $δ(μ) = d$ if $μ$ is of divergence type. Whenever $G$ is a rank-one simple Lie group with Kazhdan's property $(T)$ it follows that an ergodic invariant random subgroup of divergence type is a lattice. One of our main tools is a maximal ergodic theorem for actions of hyperbolic groups due to Bowen and Nevo.
