Exceptional collections and phantoms of special Dolgachev surfaces

We provide an explicit description of exceptional collection of maximal length in the derived category $D^b(Y)$ for a particular class of elliptic surfaces $Y$. The existence of non\,-\,trivial semiorthogonal complement (a "\,phantom\,") of this collection is also established.

Surjective rational maps and del Pezzo surfaces

We study surjective (not necessarily regular) rational endomorphisms $f$ of smooth del Pezzo surfaces $X$. We prove that under certain natural non\,-\,degeneracy condition $f$ can have degree bigger than $1$ only when $(-K_X^2) > 5$. Some structural properties of $f$ in the case $X = \mathbb{P}^2$ are also established.

On the dynamical degree of surjective endomorphisms

We establish a couple of dynamical properties of surjective rational maps $f: X \dashrightarrow X$ for smooth projective surfaces $X$. We also give a numerical condition for regularity of $f$. Some explicit constructions and calculations, related to the topological entropy of $f$, are provided.

Around the uniform rationality I

We prove that there exist rational but not uniformly rational smooth algebraic varieties. The proof is based on computing a certain numerical obstruction developed in the case of compactifications of affine spaces. We show that for some particular compactifications this obstruction behaves differently compared to the uniformly rational situation.

Computations and ML for surjective rational maps

The present note studies \emph{surjective rational endomorphisms} $f: \mathbb{P}^2 \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^2$ with \emph{cubic} terms and the indeterminacy locus $I_f \ne \emptyset$. We develop an experimental approach, based on some Python programming and Machine Learning, towards the classification of such maps; a couple of new explicit $f$ is constructed in this way. We also prove (via pure projective geometry) that a general non-regular cubic endomorphism $f$ of $\mathbb{P}^2$ is surjective if and only if the set $I_f$ has cardinality at least $3$.

On characterization of toric varieties

We study the conjecture due to V.\,V. Shokurov on characterization of toric varieties. We also consider one generalization of this conjecture. It is shown that none of the characterizations holds true in dimension $\ge 3$. Some weaker versions of the conjecture(s) are verified.

Rational maps and $\mathrm{K3}$ surfaces

We prove that generic complex projective $\mathrm{K3}$ surface $S$ does not admit a dominant rational map $A\, -\!\to S$, which is not an isomorphism, from a surface $A$ with trivial canonical class.

One numerical obstruction for rational maps between hypersurfaces

Given a rational dominant map $ϕ: Y \dashrightarrow X$ between two generic hypersurfaces $Y,X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ of dimension $\ge 3$, we prove (under an addition assumption on $ϕ$) a "Noether-Fano type" inequality $m_Y \ge m_X$ for certain (effectively computed) numerical invariants of $Y$ and $X$.

On automorphic forms of small weight for fake projective planes

On the projective plane there is a unique cubic root of the canonical bundle and this root is acyclic. On fake projective planes such root exists and is unique if there are no 3-torsion divisors (and usually exists, but not unique, otherwise). Earlier we conjectured that any such cubic root must be acyclic. In the present note we give two short proofs of this statement and show acyclicity of some other line bundles on the fake projective planes with at least $9$ automorphisms. Similarly to our earlier work we employ simple representation theory for non-abelian finite groups. The first proof is based on the observation that if some line bundle is non-linearizable with respect to a finite abelian group, then it should be linearized by a finite, \emph{non-abelian}, Heisenberg group. For the second proof, we also demonstrate vanishing of odd Betti numbers for a class of abelian covers, and use linearization of an auxiliary line bundle as well.

Maximum likelihood degree of surjective rational maps

With any \emph{surjective rational map} $f: \mathbb{P}^n \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ of the projective space we associate a numerical invariant (\emph{ML degree}) and compute it in terms of a naturally defined vector bundle $E_f \longrightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$.

Combinatorics of affine birational maps

The main object of study of the present paper is the group $\au_n$ of \emph{unimodular automorphisms} of $\com^n$. Taking $\au_n$ as a working example, our intention was to develop an approach (or rather an edifice) which allows one to prove, for instance, the non-simplicity of $\au_n$ for all $n \geq 3$. More systematic and, perhaps, general exposition will appear elsewhere.

On endomorphisms of hypersurfaces

For any prime $p\ge 5$, we show that generic hypersurface $X_p\subset\mathbb{P}^p$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ admits a non-trivial rational dominant self-map of degree $>1$, defined over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. A simple arithmetic application of this fact is also given.
