On Newtonian singularities in higher derivative gravity models

We consider the problem of Newtonian singularity in the wide class of higher derivative gravity models, including the ones which are renormalizable and super-renormalizable at the quantum level. The simplest version of the singularity-free theory has four derivatives and is pretty well-known. We argue that in all cases of local higher-derivative theories, when the poles of the propagator are real and simple, the singularities disappear due to the cancellation of contributions from scalar and tensor massive modes.

Anomaly-induced effective action and Chern-Simons modification of general relativity

Recently it was shown that the quantum vacuum effects of massless chiral fermion field in curved space-time leads to the parity-violating Pontryagin density term, which appears in the trace anomaly with imaginary coefficient. In the present work the anomaly-induced effective action with the parity-violating term is derived. The result is similar to the Chern-Simons modified general relativity, which was extensively studied in the last decade, but with the kinetic terms for the scalar different from those considered previously in the literature. The parity-breaking term makes no effect on the zero-order cosmology, but it is expected to be relevant in the black hole solutions and in the cosmological perturbations, especially gravitational waves.

On the functional renormalization group for the scalar field on curved background with non-minimal interaction

The running of the non-minimal parameter (ξ) of the interaction of the real scalar field and scalar curvature is explored within the non-perturbative setting of the functional renormalization group (RG). We establish the RG flow in curved space-time in the scalar field sector, in particular derive an equation for the non-minimal parameter. The RG trajectory is numerically explored for different sets of initial data.

Fourth derivative gravity in the auxiliary fields representation and application to the black hole stability

We consider an auxiliary fields formulation for the general fourth-order gravity on an arbitrary curved background. The case of a Ricci-flat background is elaborated in full details and it is shown that there is an equivalence with the standard metric formulation. At the same time, using auxiliary fields helps to make perturbations to look simpler and the results more clear. As an application we reconsider the linear perturbations for the classical Schwarzschild solution. We also briefly discuss the relation to the effect of massive unphysical ghosts in the theory.

Counting ghosts in the "ghost-free" non-local gravity

In the recently proposed non-local theory of quantum gravity one can avoid massive tensor ghosts at the tree level by a special choice of the non-local form factor between the two Ricci tensors. We show that at the quantum level this theory has an infinite amount of massive unphysical states, mostly corresponding to complex poles.

Do we have unitary and (super)renormalizable Quantum Gravity below Planck scale?

We explore how the stability of metric perturbations in higher derivative theories of gravity depends on the energy scale of initial seeds of such perturbations and on a typical energy scale of the gravitational vacuum background. It is shown that, at least in the cases of specific cosmological backgrounds, that the unphysical massive ghost which is present in the spectrum of such theories is not growing up as a physical excitation and remains in the vacuum state, until the initial frequency of the perturbation is close to the Planck order of magnitude. In this situation the existing versions of renormalizable and superrenormalizable theories can be seen as very satisfactory effective theories of Quantum Gravity below the Planck scale.

Gravitational Waves and Perspectives for Quantum Gravity

Understanding the role of higher derivatives is probably one of the most relevant questions in quantum gravity theory. Already at the semiclassical level, when gravity is a classical background for quantum matter fields, the action of gravity should include fourth derivative terms to provide renormalizability in the vacuum sector. The same situation holds in the quantum theory of metric. At the same time, including the fourth derivative terms means the presence of massive ghosts, which are gauge-independent massive states with negative kinetic energy. At both classical and quantum level such ghosts violate stability and hence the theory becomes inconsistent. Several approaches to solve this contradiction were invented and we are proposing one more, which looks simpler than those what were considered before. We explore the dynamics of the gravitational waves on the background of classical solutions and give certain arguments that massive ghosts produce instability only when they are present as physical particles. At least on the cosmological background one can observe that if the initial frequency of the metric perturbations is much smaller than the mass of the ghost, no instabilities are present.

Vacuum contribution of photons in the theory with Lorentz and CPT-violating terms

The photon contribution to the divergences and conformal anomaly in the theory with Lorentz and CPT-violating terms is evaluated. We calculate one-loop counterterms coming from the integration over electromagnetic field and check that they possess local conformal invariance. Furthermore, conformal anomaly and anomaly-induced effective action are calculated. It turns out that the new terms do not affect the dynamics of conformal factor in the anomaly-driven inflation (Starobinsky model) and its extensions. At the same time, one can expect these terms to affect gravitational wave equation and, in general, cosmic perturbations.

Quantum Einstein-Cartan theory with the Holst term

Holst term represents an interesting addition to the Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity with torsion. When this term is present the contact interactions between vector and axial vector fermion currents gain an extra parity-violating component. We re-derive this interaction using a simple representation for the Holst term. The same representation serves as a useful basis for the calculation of one-loop divergences in the theory with external fermionic currents and cosmological constant. Furthermore, we explore the possibilities of the on-shell version of renormalization group and construct the equations for the running of dimensionless parameters related to currents and for the effective Barbero-Immirzi parameter.

Interacting photon-baryon fluid, warm dark matter and the first acoustic peak

The Reduced Relativistic Gas (RRG) model was introduced by A. Sakharov in 1965 for deriving the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectrum. It was recently reinvented by some of us to achieve an interpolation between the radiation and dust epochs in the evolution of the Universe. This model circumvents the complicated structure of the Boltzmann-Einstein system of equations and admits a transparent description of warm-dark-matter effects. It is extended here to include, on a phenomenological basis, an out-of-equilibrium interaction between radiation and baryons which is supposed to account for relevant aspects of pre-recombination physics in a simplified manner. Furthermore, we use the tight-coupling approximation to explore the influence of both this interaction and of the RRG warmness parameter on the anisotropy spectrum of the CMB. The predictions of the model are very similar to those of the ΛCDM model if both the interaction and the dark-matter warmness parameters are of the order of $10^{-4}$ or smaller. As far as the warmness parameter is concerned, this is in good agreement with previous estimations on the basis of results from structure formation.

On the Functional Renormalization Group approach for Yang-Mills fields

We explore the gauge dependence of the effective average action within the functional renormalization group (FRG) approach. It is shown that in the framework of standard definitions of FRG for the Yang-Mills theory, the effective average action remains gauge-dependent on-shell, independent on the use of truncation scheme. Furthermore, we propose a new formulation of the FRG, based on the use of composite operators. In this case one can provide on-shell gauge-invariance for the effective average action and universality of $S$-matrix.

Renormalization Group approach to Gravity: the running of G and L inside galaxies and additional details on the elliptical NGC 4494

We explore the phenomenology of nontrivial quantum effects on low-energy gravity. These effects come from the running of the gravitational coupling parameter G and the cosmological constant L in the Einstein-Hilbert action, as induced by the Renormalization Group (RG). The Renormalization Group corrected General Relativity (RGGR model) is used to parametrize these quantum effects, and it is assumed that the dominant dark matter-like effects inside galaxies is due to these nontrivial RG effects. Here we present additional details on the RGGR model application, in particular on the Poisson equation extension that defines the effective potential, also we re-analyse the ordinary elliptical galaxy NGC 4494 using a slightly different model for its baryonic contribution, and explicit solutions are presented for the running of G and L. The values of the NGC 4494 parameters as shown here have a better agreement with the general RGGR picture for galaxies, and suggest a larger radial anisotropy than the previously published result.

The case of asymptotic supersymmetry

We start a systematic investigation of the possibility to have supersymmetry (SUSY) to be an asymptotic state of the gauge theory in the high energy (UV) limit, due to the renormalization group running of coupling constants of the theory. The answer on whether this situation takes place or not, can be resolved by dealing with the running of the ratios between Yukawa and scalar couplings to the gauge coupling. The behavior of these ratios does not depend too much on whether gauge coupling is asymptotically free (AF) or not. It can be shown that the UV stable fixed point for the Yukawa coupling is not supersymmetric. Taking this into account, one can break down SUSY only in the scalar coupling sector. We consider two simplest examples of such breaking, namely N=1 supersymmetric QED and QCD. In one of the cases one can construct an example of SUSY being restored in the UV regime.

One-loop divergences in the Galileon model

The investigation of UV divergences is a relevant step in better understanding of a new theory. In this work the one-loop divergences in the free field sector are obtained for the popular Galileons model. The calculations are performed by the generalized Schwinger-DeWitt technique and also by means of Feynman diagrams. The first method can be directly generalized to curved space, but here we deal only with the flat-space limit. We show that the UV completion of the theory includes the $π\Box^4π$ term. According to our previous analysis in the case of quantum gravity, this means that the theory can be modified to become superrenormalizable, but then its physical spectrum includes two massive ghosts and one massive scalar with positive kinetic energy. The effective approach in this theory can be perfectly successful, exactly as in the higher derivative quantum gravity, and in this case the non-renormalization theorem for Galileons remains valid in the low-energy region.

Disk and elliptical galaxies within renormalization group improved gravity

The paper is about possible effects of infrared quantum contributions to General Relativity on disk and elliptical galaxies. The Renormalization Group corrected General Relativity (RGGR model) is used to parametrize these quantum effects. The new RGGR results presented here concern the elliptical galaxy NGC 4374 and the dwarf disk galaxy DDO 47. Using the effective approach to Quantum Field Theory in curved background, one can argue that the proper RG energy scale, in the weak field limit, should be related to the Newtonian potential. In the context of galaxies, this led to a remarkably small variation of the gravitational coupling G, while also capable of generating galaxy rotation and dispersion curves of similar quality to the the best dark matter profiles (i.e., the profiles that have a core).

Quantum corrections to gravity and their implications for cosmology and astrophysics

The quantum contributions to the gravitational action are relatively easy to calculate in the higher derivative sector of the theory. However, the applications to the post-inflationary cosmology and astrophysics require the corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action and to the cosmological constant, and those we can not derive yet in a consistent and safe way. At the same time, if we assume that these quantum terms are covariant and that they have relevant magnitude, their functional form can be defined up to a single free parameter, which can be defined on the phenomenological basis. It turns out that the quantum correction may lead, in principle, to surprisingly strong and interesting effects in astrophysics and cosmology.

Vacuum stress-tensor in SSB theories

The renormalized energy-momentum tensor of vacuum has been deeply explored many years ago. The main result of these studies was that such a tensor should satisfy the conservation laws which reflects the covariance of the theory in the presence of loop corrections. In view of this general result we address two important questions, namely how to implement the momentum cut-off in a covariant way and whether this general result holds in the theory with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking. In the last case some new interesting details arise and although the calculations are more involved we show that the final result satisfies the conservation laws.
