Distributional Equivalence in Linear Non-Gaussian Latent-Variable Cyclic Causal Models: Characterization and Learning

Causal discovery with latent variables is a fundamental task. Yet most existing methods rely on strong structural assumptions, such as enforcing specific indicator patterns for latents or restricting how they can interact with others. We argue that a core obstacle to a general, structural-assumption-free approach is the lack of an equivalence characterization: without knowing what can be identified, one generally cannot design methods for how to identify it. In this work, we aim to close this gap for linear non-Gaussian models. We establish the graphical criterion for when two graphs with arbitrary latent structure and cycles are distributionally equivalent, that is, they induce the same observed distribution set. Key to our approach is a new tool, edge rank constraints, which fills a missing piece in the toolbox for latent-variable causal discovery in even broader settings. We further provide a procedure to traverse the whole equivalence class and develop an algorithm to recover models from data up to such equivalence. To our knowledge, this is the first equivalence characterization with latent variables in any parametric setting without structural assumptions, and hence the first structural-assumption-free discovery method. Duality Respecting Representations and Compatible Complexity Measures for Gammoids

We show that every gammoid has special digraph representations, such that a representation of the dual of the gammoid may be easily obtained by reversing all arcs. In an informal sense, the duality notion of a poset applied to the digraph of a special representation of a gammoid commutes with the operation of forming the dual of that gammoid. We use these special representations in order to define a complexity measure for gammoids, such that the classes of gammoids with bounded complexity are closed under duality, minors, and direct sums.

Lattice Path Matroids are 3-Colorable

We show that every lattice path matroid of rank at least two has a quite simple coline, also known as a positive coline. Therefore every orientation of a lattice path matroid is 3-colorable with respect to the chromatic number of oriented matroids introduced by J. Nešetřil, R. Nickel, and W. Hochstättler.

Well-Scaling Procedure for Deciding Gammoid Class-Membership of Matroids

We introduce a procedure that solves the decision problem whether a given matroid M is a gammoid. The procedure consists of three pieces: First, we introduce a notion of a valid matroid tableau which captures the current state of knowledge regarding the properties of matroids related to the matroid under consideration. Second, we give a sufficient set of rules that may be used to generate valid matroid tableaux. Third, we introduce a succession of steps that ultimately lead to a decisive tableau starting with any valid tableau. We argue that the decision problem scales well with respect to parallel computation models.

Heavy Arc Orientations of Gammoids

In this work, we introduce a purely combinatorial way to obtain realizable orientations of a gammoid from a total order on the arc set of the digraph representing it, without first obtaining a matrix representing the gammoid over the reals.
