Albatross: An optimistic consensus algorithm

The consensus protocol is a critical component of distributed ledgers and blockchains. Achieving consensus over a decentralized network poses challenges to transaction finality and performance. Currently, the highest-performing consensus algorithms are speculative BFT algorithms, which, however, compromise on the transaction finality guarantees offered by their non-speculative counterparts. In this paper, we introduce Albatross, a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain consensus algorithm that aims to combine the best of both worlds. At its heart, Albatross is a high-performing, speculative BFT algorithm that offers strong probabilistic finality. We complement this by periodically guaranteeing finality through the Tendermint protocol. We prove our protocol to be secure under standard BFT assumptions and analyze its performance both on a theoretical and practical level. For that, we provide an open-source Rust implementation of Albatross. Our real-world measurements support that our protocol has a performance close to the theoretical maximum for single-chain Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithms.

Multiple reductions, foliations and the dynamics of cluster maps

Presymplectic and Poisson reduction of cluster maps are described in terms of the "canonical" foliations of presymplectic and Poisson manifolds. This approach to reduction leads to a geometric description, in terms of foliations, of the dynamics of the original (not reduced) map. The case where multiple reductions exist (presymplectic/Poisson or presymplectic/Poisson/Poisson) is further explored and examples illustrating several features of this approach are presented, including a nontrivial one in dimension seven which is comprehensively treated.

Dynamics and periodicity in a family of cluster maps

The dynamics of a 1-parameter family of cluster maps $φ_r$ associated to mutation-periodic quivers in dimension 4, is studied in detail. The use of presymplectic reduction leads to a globally periodic symplectic map, and this enables us to reduce the problem to the study of maps belonging to a group of symplectic birational maps of the plane which is isomorphic to $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})\ltimes\mathbb{R}^2$. We conclude that there are three different types of dynamical behaviour for $φ_r$ characterized by the integer parameter values $r=1$, $r=2$ and $r>2$. For each type, the periodic points, the structure and the asymptotic behaviour of the orbits are completely described. A finer description of the dynamics is provided by using first integrals.

Dynamics of the birational maps arising from $F_0$ and $dP_3$ quivers

The dynamics of the maps associated to $F_0$ and $dP_3$ quivers is studied in detail. We show that the corresponding reduced symplectic maps are conjugate to globally periodic maps by providing explicit conjugations. The dynamics in $\Rb^N_+$ of the original maps is obtained by lifting the dynamics of these globally periodic maps and the solution of the discrete dynamical systems generated by each map is given. A better understanding of the dynamics is achieved by considering first integrals. The relationship between the complete integrability of the globally periodic maps and the dynamics of the original maps is explored.

Discrete dynamical systems from mutation-periodic quivers: examples and reduction

Several new mutation-periodic quivers of period higher than 1 are introduced as well as the associated discrete dynamical systems. The reduction of these systems is developed using either a presymplectic or a Poisson approach. The presymplectic approach leads to a reduced system whose iteration map is symplectic with respect to a log symplectic form. In the Poisson approach we build a Poisson structure invariant under the iteration map, leading to a reduced system whose variables are the Casimirs of such structure.

Reduction of cluster iteration maps to symplectic maps

We study iteration maps of recurrence relations arising from mutation periodic quivers of arbitrary period. Combining tools from cluster algebra theory and (pre)symplectic geometry, we show that these cluster iteration maps can be reduced to symplectic maps on a lower dimensional submanifold, provided the matrix representing the quiver is singular. The reduced iteration map is explicitly computed for several new periodic quivers.
