Effect of Spinless Impurities on Reduction of $T_c$ in High $T_c$ Superconductors

The notion of a finite pairing interaction energy range suggested by Nam, results in some states at the Fermi level not participating in pairings when there are scattering centers such as impurities. The fact that not all states at the Fermi level participate in pairing is shown to suppress $T_c$ in an isotropic superconductor and destroy superconductivity. We have presented quantitative calculations of $T_c$ reduced via spinless impurities, in good agreements with data of Zn-doped YBCO and LSCO, respectively. It is not necessary to have the anisotropic order parameter, to account for the destruction of superconductivity via non-magnetic impurities.

Calculation of Magnetic Penetration Depth Length $λ(T)$ in High Tc Superconductors

The notion of a finite pairing interaction energy range via Nam, results in the incomplete condensation in which not all states participate in pairings. Thestates not participating in pairings are shown to yield the lowenergy states responsible for the linear T dependence ofsuperelectron density at low T in a s-wave superconductor. Wepresent extensive quantitative calculations of $λ$(T) forall T ranges, in good agreements with experiments. It is notnecessary to have nodes in the order parameter, to account for thelinear T dependence of $λ$(T) at low T in high Tc superconductors.

Object-oriented construction of a multigrid electronic-structure code with Fortran 90

We describe the object-oriented implementation of a higher-order finite-difference density-functional code in Fortran 90. Object-oriented models of grid and related objects are constructed and employed for the implementation of an efficient one-way multigrid method we have recently proposed for the density-functional electronic-structure calculations. Detailed analysis of performance and strategy of the one-way multigrid scheme will be presented.

One-way multigrid method in electronic structure calculations

We propose a simple and efficient one-way multigrid method for self-consistent electronic structure calculations based on iterative diagonalization. Total energy calculations are performed on several different levels of grids starting from the coarsest grid, with wave functions transferred to each finer level. The only changes compared to a single grid calculation are interpolation and orthonormalization steps outside the original total energy calculation and required only for transferring between grids. This feature results in a minimal amount of code change, and enables us to employ a sophisticated interpolation method and noninteger ratio of grid spacings. Calculations employing a preconditioned conjugate gradient method are presented for two examples, a quantum dot and a charged molecular system. Use of three grid levels with grid spacings 2h, 1.5h, and h decreases the computer time by about a factor of 5 compared to single level calculations.

Two-dimensional limit of exchange-correlation energy functional approximations in density functional theory

We investigate the behavior of three-dimensional (3D) exchange-correlation energy functional approximations of density functional theory in anisotropic systems with two-dimensional (2D) character. Using two simple models, quasi-2D electron gas and two-electron quantum dot, we show a {\it fundamental limitation} of the local density approximation (LDA), and its semi-local extensions, generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and meta-GGA (MGGA), the most widely used forms of which are worse than the LDA in the strong 2D limit. The origin of these shortcomings is in the inability of the local (LDA) and semi-local (GGA/MGGA) approximations to describe systems with 2D character in which the nature of the exchange-correlation hole is very nonlocal. Nonlocal functionals provide an alternative approach, and explicitly the average density approximation (ADA) is shown to be remarkably accurate for the quasi-2D electron gas system. Our study is not only relevant for understanding of the functionals but also practical applications to semiconductor quantum structures and materials such as graphite and metal surfaces. We also comment on the implication of our findings to the practical device simulations based on the (semi-)local density functional method.

Addition Spectra of Chaotic Quantum Dots: Interplay between Interactions and Geometry

We investigate the influence of interactions and geometry on ground states of clean chaotic quantum dots using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock method. We find two distinct regimes of interaction strength: While capacitive energy fluctuations $δχ$ follow approximately a random matrix prediction for weak interactions, there is a crossover to a regime where $δχ$ is strongly enhanced and scales roughly with interaction strength. This enhancement is related to the rearrangement of charges into ordered states near the dot edge. This effect is non-universal depending on dot shape and size. It may provide additional insight into recent experiments on statistics of Coulomb blockade peak spacings.
