An allowed window for heavy neutral leptons below the kaon mass

The extension of the Standard Model with two gauge-singlet Majorana fermions can simultaneously explain two beyond-the-Standard-model phenomena: neutrino masses and oscillations, as well as the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The parameters of such a model are constrained by the neutrino oscillation data, direct accelerator searches, big bang nucleosynthesis, and requirement of successful baryogenesis. We show that the combination of all these constraints still leaves an allowed region in the parameter space below the kaon mass. This region can be probed by the further searches of NA62, DUNE, or SHiP experiments.

Reconciling resonant leptogenesis and baryogenesis via neutrino oscillations

Right-handed neutrinos offer an elegant solution to two well established phenomena beyond the Standard Model (SM) - masses and oscillations of neutrinos, as well as the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. It is also a minimalistic solution since it requires only singlet Majorana fermions to be added to the SM particle content. If these fermions are nearly degenerate, the mass scale of right-handed neutrinos can be very low and accessible by the present and planned experiments. There are at least two well studied mechanisms of the low-scale leptogenesis: baryogenesis via oscillations and resonant leptogenesis. These two mechanisms were often considered separate, but they can in fact be understood as two different regimes of one and the same mechanism, described by a unique set of quantum kinetic equations. In this work we show, using a unified description based on quantum kinetic equations, that the parameter space of these two regimes of low-scale leptogenesis significantly overlap. We present a comprehensive study of the parameter space of the low-scale leptogenesis with the mass scale ranging from $0.1$ GeV to $\sim 10^6$ GeV. The unified perspective of this work reveals the synergy between intensity and energy frontiers in the quest for heavy Majorana neutrinos.

Uniting low-scale leptogeneses

In this work we demonstrate that what was previously considered as different mechanisms of baryon asymmetry generation involving two right-handed Majorana neutrinos with masses far below the GUT scale -- leptogenesis via neutrino oscillations and resonant leptogenesis -- are actually united. We show that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated for all experimentally allowed values of the right-handed neutrino masses above $M_N \gtrsim 100$ MeV. Leptogenesis is effective in a broad range of the parameters, including mass splitting between two right-handed neutrinos as big as $ΔM_N/M_N \sim 0.1$, as well as mixing angles between the heavy and light neutrinos large enough to be accessible to planned intensity experiments or future colliders.

Dirac vs. Majorana HNLs (and their oscillations) at SHiP

SHiP is a proposed high-intensity beam dump experiment set to operate at the CERN SPS. It is expected to have an unprecedented sensitivity to a variety of models containing feebly interacting particles, such as Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs). Two HNLs or more could successfully explain the observed neutrino masses through the seesaw mechanism. If, in addition, they are quasi-degenerate, they could be responsible for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Depending on their mass splitting, HNLs can have very different phenomenologies: they can behave as Majorana fermions -- with lepton number violating (LNV) signatures, such as same-sign dilepton decays -- or as Dirac fermions with only lepton number conserving (LNC) signatures. In this work, we quantitatively demonstrate that LNV processes can be distinguished from LNC ones at SHiP, using only the angular distribution of the HNL decay products. Accounting for spin correlations in the simulation and using boosted decision trees for discrimination, we show that SHiP will be able to distinguish Majorana-like and Dirac-like HNLs in a significant fraction of the currently unconstrained parameter space. If the mass splitting is of order $10^{-6}$ eV, SHiP could even be capable of resolving HNL oscillations, thus providing a direct measurement of the mass splitting. This analysis highlights the potential of SHiP to not only search for feebly interacting particles, but also perform model selection.

To Positivity and Beyond, where Higgs-Dilaton Inflation has never gone before

We study the consequences of (beyond) positivity of scattering amplitudes in the effective field theory description of the Higgs-Dilaton inflationary model. By requiring the EFT to be compatible with a unitary, causal, local and Lorentz invariant UV completion, we derive constraints on the Wilson coefficients of the first higher order derivative operators. We show that the values allowed by the constraints are consistent with the phenomenological applications of the Higgs-Dilaton model.

Parameter space of baryogenesis in the $ν$MSM

The Standard Model accompanied with two right-handed neutrinos with the masses below the weak scale can explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Moreover, this model is at least partially testable in the forthcoming experiments such as NA62, SHiP, and MATHUSLA. The remarkable progress in understanding of various rates entering the kinetic equations describing the asymmetry generation along with considerable improvements of the numerical procedures allow us to perform a comprehensive analysis of the parameter space of the model. We find that the region of parameters leading to the successful baryogenesis is notably larger than it was previously obtained. Our results are presented in a way that they can be readily used for studies of sensitivity of various experiments searching for the right-handed neutrinos responsible for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We also present a detailed comparison with the studies by other groups.

Probing baryon asymmetry of the Universe at LHC and SHiP

The origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) is one of the major puzzles beyond the Standard Model. Detecting the particles responsible for the generation of the BAU would enormously boost our understanding of physics of the early Universe. Here we demonstrate that searches for displaced vertices at ATLAS, CMS and LHCb allow detecting heavy neutral leptons (HNL) with parameters that can simultaneously lead to the successful generation of the BAU and explain the masses and oscillations of active neutrinos. The combination of a dedicated LHC search program and a complementary Intensity Frontier experiment (such as SHiP) will allow exploring a sizeable part of the "minimal HNL baryogenesis" parameter space.

Testing $ν$MSM with indirect searches

We consider neutrino Minimal extension of the Standard Model ($ν$MSM), which by introducing only three sterile neutrinos in sub electroweak region can explain active neutrino oscillations (via seesaw type I mechanism), baryon asymmetry of the Universe (leptogenesis via oscillations) and dark matter phenomena (with keV-scale sterile neutrino forming dark matter). We estimate sterile neutrino virtual contributions to various lepton flavor and lepton number violating processes. The contributions are too small, giving no chance for indirect searches to compete with direct measurements in exploring $ν$MSM.
