Revised surface abundances of R Coronae Borealis stars

Surface abundances of 14 (11 majority class and 3 minority class) R Coronae Borealis stars (RCBs) along with the final flash object, V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's object) are revised based on their carbon abundances measured from the observed C2 bands; note that the earlier reported abundances were derived using an assumed carbon abundance due to the well known ``carbon problem''. The hot RCB MV Sgr is not subject to a carbon problem; it is remarkable to note that MV Sgr's carbon abundance lies in the range that is measured for the majority and minority class RCBs. The revised iron abundances for the RCBs are in the range log E(Fe)=3.8 to log E(Fe)=5.8 with the minority class RCB V854 Cen at lower end and the majority class RCB R CrB at the higher end of this range. Indications are that the revised RCBs' metallicity range is roughly consistent with the metal poor population contained within the bulge. The revised abundances of RCBs are then compared with extreme helium stars (EHes), the hotter relatives of RCBs. Clear differences are observed between RCBs and EHes in their metallicity distribution, carbon abundances, and the abundance trends observed for the key elements. These abundances are further discussed in the light of their formation scenarios.

Trends and Characteristics of High-Frequency Type II Bursts Detected by CALLISTO Spectrometers

Solar radio type II bursts serve as early indicators of incoming geo-effective space weather events such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). In order to investigate the origin of high-frequency type II bursts (HF type II bursts), we have identified 51 of them (among 180 type II bursts from SWPC reports) that are observed by ground-based Compound Astronomical Low-cost Low-frequency Instrument for Spectroscopy and Transportable Observatory (CALLISTO) spectrometers and whose upper-frequency cutoff (of either fundamental or harmonic emission) lies in between 150 MHz-450 MHz during 2010-2019. We found that 60% of HF type II bursts, whose upper-frequency cutoff $\geq$ 300 MHz originate from the western longitudes. Further, our study finds a good correlation $\sim $ 0.73 between the average shock speed derived from the radio dynamic spectra and the corresponding speed from CME data. Also, we found that analyzed HF type II bursts are associated with wide and fast CMEs located near the solar disk. In addition, we have analyzed the spatio-temporal characteristics of two of these high-frequency type II bursts and compared the derived from radio observations with those derived from multi-spacecraft CME observations from SOHO/LASCO and STEREO coronagraphs.

Detection of the Galactic Warm Neutral Medium in HI 21cm absorption

We report a deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for Galactic H{\sc i} 21cm absorption towards the quasar B0438$-$436, yielding the detection of wide, weak H{\sc i} 21cm absorption, with a velocity-integrated H{\sc i} 21cm optical depth of $0.0188 \pm 0.0036$~km~s$^{-1}$. Comparing this with the H{\sc i} column density measured in the Parkes Galactic All-Sky Survey gives a column density-weighted harmonic mean spin temperature of $3760 \pm 365$~K, one of the highest measured in the Galaxy. This is consistent with most of the H{\sc i} along the sightline arising in the stable warm neutral medium (WNM). The low peak H{\sc i} 21cm optical depth towards B0438$-$436 implies negligible self-absorption, allowing a multi-Gaussian joint decomposition of the H{\sc i} 21cm absorption and emission spectra. This yields a gas kinetic temperature of $\rm T_k \leq (4910 \pm 1900)$~K, and a spin temperature of $\rm T_s = (1000 \pm 345)$~K for the gas that gives rise to the H{\sc i} 21cm absorption. Our data are consistent with the H{\sc i} 21cm absorption arising from either the stable WNM, with $\rm T_s \ll T_k$, $\rm T_k \approx 5000$~K, and little penetration of the background Lyman-$\alpha$ radiation field into the neutral hydrogen, or from the unstable neutral medium, with $\rm T_s \approx T_k \approx 1000\;K$.

Escape from noisy intermittent repellers

Intermittent or marginally-stable repellers are commonly associated with a power law decay in the survival fraction. We show here that the presence of weak additive noise alters the spectrum of the Perron - Frobenius operator significantly giving rise to exponential decays even in systems that are otherwise regular. Implications for ballistic transport in marginally stable miscrostructures are briefly discussed.

Asymptotic expansion in the fission process

Asymptotic expansion of the Fokker-Planck equation in terms of the strength of the fluctuation has been carried out. The mean and the variance of the total kinetic energies of the fission fragments have been calculated and compared with the experimental values.
