The rapid decay property for pairs of discrete groups

We generalize the notion of rapid decay property for a group $G$ to pairs of groups $(G,H)$ where $H$ is a finitely generated subgroup of $G$, where typically the subgroup $H$ does not have rapid decay. We deduce some isomorphisms in $K$-theory, and investigate relatively spectral injections in the reduced group $C^*$-algebra. Rapid decay property for the pair $(G,H)$ also gives a lower bound for the probability of return to $H$ of symmetric random walks on $G$.

On the Idempotent Conjecture for Sidki Doubles

Let $G$ be a group and $X(G)$ its Sidki Double. The idempotent conjecture says that there should be no non-trivial idempotent in the complex group ring of a torsion-free group. We investigate this conjecture for the Sidki double of a torsion-free group, and obtain a partial result.

Horospherical random graphs and lockdown strategies

Expanders are sparse graph that are strongly connected, where {\it connectivity} is quantified using eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix, and {\it sparsity} in terms of vertex valency. We give a model of random graphs and study their connectivity and sparsity. This model is a particular case of soft geometric random graphs, and allows to construct sparse graphs with good expansion properties, as well as highly clustered ones. On those graphs, we study the speed at which random walks spread in the graph, and visit all vertices. As an illustration, we build a model for mainland France and study the spread of random walks under several types of lockdown. Our experiments show that completely closing medium and long distance travel to slow down the spread of a random walk is more efficient than than local restrictions.

Tangent bundles of hyperbolic spaces and proper affine actions on $L^p$ spaces

We define the notion of a negatively curved tangent bundle of a metric measured space. We prove that, when a group $G$ acts on a metric measured space $X$ with a negatively curved tangent bundle, then $G$ acts on some $L^p$ space, and that this action is proper under suitable assumptions. We then check that this result applies to the case when $X$ is a hyperbolic space.

A note on the acylindrical hyperbolicity of groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes

We study the acylindrical hyperbolicity of groups acting by isometries on CAT(0) cube complexes, and obtain simple criteria formulated in terms of stabilisers for the action. Namely, we show that a group acting essentially and non-elementarily on a finite dimensional irreducible CAT(0) cube complex is acylindrically hyperbolic if there exist two hyperplanes whose stabilisers intersect along a finite subgroup. We also give further conditions on the geometry of the complex so that the result holds if we only require the existence of a single pair of points whose stabilisers intersect along a finite subgroup.

Median geometry for spaces with measured walls and for groups

We show that uniform lattices of isometries of products of real hyperbolic spaces act properly discontinuously and cocompactly on a median space. For lattices in products of at least two factors, this is the strongest degree of compatibility possible with the median geometry. Our theorem is also relevant for potential Rips-type theorems for median spaces. The result follows from an analysis of a quasification of median geometry that provides a geometric characterization of spaces at finite Hausdorff distance from a median space. We explain how the case of complex hyperbolic metric spaces is different, and that such spaces cannot be at finite Hausdorff distance from a median space.

Relative Property (T) for Nilpotent Subgroups

We show that relative Property (T) for the abelianization of a nilpotent normal subgroup implies relative Property (T) for the subgroup itself. This and other results are a consequence of a theorem of independent interest, which states that if $H$ is a closed subgroup of a locally compact group $G$, and $A$ is a closed subgroup of the center of $H$, such that $A$ is normal in $G$, and $(G/A, H/A)$ has relative Property (T), then $(G, H^{(1)})$ has relative Property (T), where $H^{(1)}$ is the closure of the commutator subgroup of $H$. In fact, the assumption that $A$ is in the center of $H$ can be replaced with the weaker assumption that $A$ is abelian and every $H$-invariant finite measure on the unitary dual of $A$ is supported on the set of fixed points.

Cryptosystems using subgroup distortion

In this paper we propose cryptosystems based on subgroup distortion in hyperbolic groups. We also include concrete examples of hyperbolic groups as possible platforms.

Introduction to the Rapid Decay property

This is an introduction to the Rapid Decay property, with a survey of known results and equivalent definitions of this property. We also discuss in details the easy case when G = Z. Everything in this paper is well-known by different sets of people.

The Median Class and Superrigidity of Actions on CAT(0) Cube Complexes

We define a bounded cohomology class, called the {\em median class}, in the second bounded cohomology -- with appropriate coefficients --of the automorphism group of a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex X. The median class of X behaves naturally with respect to taking products and appropriate subcomplexes and defines in turn the {\em median class of an action} by automorphisms of X. We show that the median class of a non-elementary action by automorphisms does not vanish and we show to which extent it does vanish if the action is elementary. We obtain as a corollary a superrigidity result and show for example that any irreducible lattice in the product of at least two locally compact connected groups acts on a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex X with a finite orbit in the Roller compactification of X. In the case of a product of Lie groups, the Appendix by Caprace allows us to deduce that the fixed point is in fact inside the complex X. In the course of the proof we construct a Γ-equivariant measurable map from a Poisson boundary of Γwith values in the non-terminating ultrafilters on the Roller boundary of X.

Flat bundles with complex analytic holonomy

Let G be a connected complex Lie group. We show that any flat principal G-bundle over any finite CW-complex pulls back to a trivial bundle over some finite covering space of the base space if and only if each real characteristic class of positive degree of G vanishes. A third equivalent condition is that the derived group of the radical of G is simply connected. As a corollary, the same conditions are equivalent if G is a connected amenable Lie group. In particular, if G is a connected compact Lie group then any flat principal G-bundle over any finite CW-complex pulls back to a trivial bundle over some finite covering space of the base space.

Bounded characteristic classes and flat bundles

Let G be a connected Lie group, G^d the underlying discrete group, and BG, BG^d their classifying spaces. Let R denote the radical of G. We show that all classes in the image of the canonical map in cohomology H^*(BG,R)->H^*(BG^d,R) are bounded if and only if the derived group [R,R] is simply connected. We also give equivalent conditions in terms of stable commutator length and distortion.

Atiyah's $L^2$-Index theorem

The $L^2$-Index Theorem of Atiyah \cite{atiyah} expresses the index of an elliptic operator on a closed manifold $M$ in terms of the $G$-equivariant index of some regular covering $\widetilde{M}$ of $M$, with $G$ the group of covering transformations. Atiyah's proof is analytic in nature. Our proof is algebraic and involves an embedding of a given group into an acyclic one, together with naturality properties of the indices.
