Bergman kernel on Riemann surfaces and Kaehler metric on symmetric products

Let $X$ be a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface equipped with the Poincaré metric. For any integer $k\geq 2$, we investigate the Bergman kernel associated to the holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $Ω^{\otimes k}_X$, where $Ø$ is the holomorphic cotangent bundle of $X$. Our first main result estimates the corresponding Bergman metric on $X$ in terms of the Poincaré metric. We then consider a certain natural embedding of the symmetric product of $X$ into a Grassmannian parametrizing subspaces of fixed dimension of the space of all global holomorphic sections of $Ω^{\otimes k}_X$. The Fubini-Study metric on the Grassmannian restricts to a Kähler metric on the symmetric product of $X$. The volume form for this restricted metric on the symmetric product is estimated in terms of the Bergman kernel of $Ω^{\otimes k}_X$ and the volume form for the orbifold Kähler form on the symmetric product given by the Poincaré metric on $X$.

Poisson structure on the moduli spaces of sheaves of pure dimension one on a surface

Let S be a smooth complex projective surface equipped with a Poisson structure s and also a polarization H. The moduli space M_H(S,P) of stable sheaves on S having a fixed Hilbert polynomial P of degree one has a natural Poisson structure given by s, studied by Tyurin and Bottacin. We prove that the symplectic leaves of M_H(S,P) are the fibers of the natural map from it to the symmetric power of the effective divisor on S given by the singular locus of s.

Homogeneous principal bundles over manifolds with trivial logarithmic tangent bundle

Winkelmann considered compact complex manifolds $X$ equipped with a reduced effective normal crossing divisor $D\, \subset\, X$ such that the logarithmic tangent bundle $TX(-\log D)$ is holomorphically trivial. He characterized them as pairs $(X,\, D)$ admitting a holomorphic action of a complex Lie group $\mathbb G$ satisfying certain conditions \cite{Wi1}, \cite{Wi2}; this $\mathbb G$ is the connected component, containing the identity element, of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of $X$ that preserve $D$. We characterize the homogeneous holomorphic principal $H$--bundles over $X$, where $H$ is a connected complex Lie group. Our characterization says that the following three are equivalent: (1)~ $E_H$ is homogeneous. (2)~ $E_H$ admits a logarithmic connection singular over $D$. (3)~ The family of principal $H$--bundles $\{g^*E_H\}_{g\in \mathbb G}$ is infinitesimally rigid at the identity element of the group $\mathbb G$.

Logarithmic Cartan geometry on complex manifolds

We pursue the study of holomorphic Cartan geometry with singularities. We introduce the notion of logarithmic Cartan geometry on a complex manifold, with polar part supported on a normal crossing divisor. In particular, we show that the push-forward of a Cartan geometry constructed using a finite Galois ramified covering is a logarithmic Cartan geometry (the polar part is supported on the ramification locus). We also study the specific case of the logarithmic Cartan geometry with the model being the complex affine space.

Tannakian classification of equivariant principal bundles on toric varieties

Let $X$ be a complete toric variety equipped with the action of a torus $T$ and $G$ a reductive algebraic group, defined over an algebraically closed field $K$. We introduce the notion of a compatible $Σ$--filtered algebra associated to $X$, generalizing the notion of a compatible $Σ$--filtered vector space due to Klyachko, where $Σ$ denotes the fan of $X$. We combine Klyachko's classification of $T$--equivariant vector bundles on $X$ with Nori's Tannakian approach to principal $G$--bundles, to give an equivalence of categories between $T$--equivariant principal $G$--bundles on $X$ and certain compatible $Σ$--filtered algebras associated to $X$, when the characteristic of $K$ is $0$.

Moduli spaces of framed $G$--Higgs bundles and symplectic geometry

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface, $D\, \subset\, X$ a reduced effective divisor, $G$ a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group and $H_x\, \subsetneq\, G_x$ a Zariski closed subgroup for every $x\, \in\, D$. A framed principal $G$--bundle is a pair $(E_G,\, ϕ)$, where $E_G$ is a holomorphic principal $G$--bundle on $X$ and $ϕ$ assigns to each $x\, \in\, D$ a point of the quotient space $(E_G)_x/H_x$. A framed $G$--Higgs bundle is a framed principal $G$--bundle $(E_G,\, ϕ)$ together with a section $θ\, \in\, H^0(X,\, \text{ad}(E_G)\otimes K_X\otimes{\mathcal O}_X(D))$ such that $θ(x)$ is compatible with the framing $ϕ$ for every $x\, \in\, D$. We construct a holomorphic symplectic structure on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{FH}(G)$ of stable framed $G$--Higgs bundles. Moreover, we prove that the natural morphism from $\mathcal{M}_{FH}(G)$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{H}(G)$ of $D$-twisted $G$--Higgs bundles $(E_G,\, θ)$ that forgets the framing, is Poisson. These results generalize \cite{BLP} where $(G,\, \{H_x\}_{x\in D})$ is taken to be $(\text{GL}(r,{\mathbb C}),\, \{\text{I}_{r\times r}\}_{x\in D})$. We also investigate the Hitchin system for $\mathcal{M}_{FH}(G)$ and its relationship with that for $\mathcal{M}_{H}(G)$.

Automorphism group of principal bundles, Levi reduction and invariant connections

Let $M$ be a compact connected complex manifold and $G$ a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group. Let $E_G$ be a holomorphic principal $G$--bundle over $M$ and $T\, \subset\, G$ a torus containing the connected component of the center of $G$. Let $N$ (respectively, $C$) be the normalizer (respectively, centralizer) of $T$ in $G$, and let $W$ be the Weyl group $N/C$ for $T$. We prove that there is a natural bijective correspondence between the following two: Torus subbundles $\mathbb T$ of ${\rm Ad}(E_G)$ such that for some (hence every) $x\, \in\, M$, the fiber ${\mathbb T}_x$ lies in the conjugacy class of tori in ${\rm Ad}(E_G)$ determined by $T$. Quadruples of the form $(E_W,\, ϕ,\, E'_C,\, τ)$, where $ϕ\, :\, E_W\, \longrightarrow\, M$ is a principal $W$--bundle, $ϕ^*E_G\, \supset\, E'_C\, \stackrelψ{\longrightarrow}\, E_W$ is a holomorphic reduction of structure group of $ϕ^* E_G$ to $C$, and $$ τ\,:\, E'_C\times N \, \longrightarrow\, E'_C $$ is a holomorphic action of $N$ on $E'_C$ extending the natural action of $C$ on $E'_C$, such that the composition $ψ\circτ$ coincides with the composition of the quotient map $E'_C\times N\, \longrightarrow\, (E'_C/C)\times (N/C)\,=\, (E'_C\times N)/(C\times C)$ with the natural map $(E'_C/C)\times (N/C)\, \longrightarrow\, E_W$. The composition of maps $E'_C\, \longrightarrow\, E_W \, \longrightarrow\, M$ defines a principal $N$--bundle on $M$. This principal $N$--bundle $E_N$ is a reduction of structure group of $E_G$ to $N$. Given a complex connection $\nabla$ on $E_G$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $\nabla$ to be induced by a connection on $E_N$. This criterion relates Hermitian--Einstein connections on $E_G$ and $E'_C$ in a very precise manner.

Seshadri constants and Grassmann bundles over curves

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective curve, and let $E$ be a vector bundle on $X$ which is not semistable. For a suitably chosen integer $r$, let $\text{Gr}(E)$ be the Grassmann bundle over $X$ that parametrizes the quotients of the fibers of $E$ of dimension $r$. Assuming some numerical conditions on the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $E$, we study Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on $\text{Gr}(E)$. In many cases, we give the precise value of Seshadri constant. Our results generalize various known results for ${\rm rank}(E)=2$.

Stability and holomorphic connections on vector bundles over LVMB manifolds

We characterize all LVMB manifolds X such that the holomorphic tangent bundle TX is spanned at the generic point by a family of global holomorphic vector fields, each of them having non-empty zero locus. We deduce that holomorphic connections on semi-stable holomorphic vector bundles over LVMB manifolds with this previous property are always flat.

On the moduli space of holomorphic G-connections on a compact Riemann surface

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two and $G$ a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group. The Riemann--Hilbert correspondence produces a biholomorphism between the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_X(G)$ parametrizing holomorphic $G$--connections on $X$ and the $G$--character variety $${\mathcal R}(G):= \text{Hom}(π_1(X, x_0), G)/\!\!/G\, .$$ While ${\mathcal R}(G)$ is known to be affine, we show that ${\mathcal M}_X(G)$ is not affine. The scheme ${\mathcal R}(G)$ has an algebraic symplectic form constructed by Goldman. We construct an algebraic symplectic form on ${\mathcal M}_X(G)$ with the property that the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence pulls back to the Goldman symplectic form to it. Therefore, despite the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence being non-algebraic, the pullback of the Goldman symplectic form by the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence nevertheless continues to be algebraic.

Isomonodromic deformations of logarithmic connections and stable parabolic vector bundles

We consider irreducible logarithmic connections $(E,\,δ)$ over compact Riemann surfaces $X$ of genus at least two. The underlying vector bundle $E$ inherits a natural parabolic structure over the singular locus of the connection $δ$; the parabolic structure is given by the residues of $δ$. We prove that for the universal isomonodromic deformation of the triple $(X,\,E,\,δ)$, the parabolic vector bundle corresponding to a generic parameter in the Teichmüller space is parabolically stable. In the case of parabolic vector bundles of rank two, the general parabolic vector bundle is even parabolically very stable.

Generalized Holomorphic Cartan geometries

This is largely a survey paper, dealing with Cartan geometries in the complex analytic category. We first remind some standard facts going back to the seminal works of F. Klein, E. Cartan and C. Ehresmann. Then we present the concept of a branched holomorphic Cartan geometry which was introduced by the authors in [BD]. It generalizes to higher dimension the notion of a branched (flat) complex projective structure on a Riemann surface introduced by Mandelbaum. This new framework is much more flexible than that of the usual holomorphic Cartan geometries (e.g. all compact complex projective manifolds admit branched holomorphic projective structures). At the same time, this new definition is rigid enough to enable us to classify branched holomorphic Cartan geometries on compact simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Symplectic geometry of a moduli space of framed Higgs bundles

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface and $D$ an effective divisor on $X$. Let ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ denote the moduli space of $D$-twisted stable Higgs bundles (a special class of Hitchin pairs) on $X$ of rank $r$ and degree $d$. It is known that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ has a natural holomorphic Poisson structure which is in fact symplectic if and only if $D$ is the zero divisor. We prove that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ admits a natural enhancement to a holomorphic symplectic manifold which is called here ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$. This ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$ is constructed by trivializing, over $D$, the restriction of the vector bundles underlying the $D$-twisted Higgs bundles; such objects are called here as framed Higgs bundles. We also investigate the symplectic structure on the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$ of framed Higgs bundles as well as the Hitchin system associated to it.

Wonderful Compactification of Character Varieties

Using the wonderful compactification of a semisimple adjoint affine algebraic group G defined over an algebraically closed field k of arbitrary characteristic, we construct a natural compactification Y of the G-character variety of any finitely generated group F. When F is a free group, we show that this compactification is always simply connected with respect to the étale fundamental group, and when k=C it is also topologically simply connected. For other groups F, we describe conditions for the compactification of the moduli space to be simply connected and give examples when these conditions are satisfied, including closed surface groups and free abelian groups when G=PGL(n,C). Additionally, when F is a free group we identify the boundary divisors of Y in terms of previously studied moduli spaces, and we construct a family of Poisson structures on Y and its boundary divisors arising from Belavin-Drinfeld splittings of the double of the Lie algebra of G. In the appendix, authored by Sam Evens and Arlo Caine, we explain how to put a Poisson structure on a quotient of a Poisson algebraic variety by the action of a reductive Poisson algebraic group.

A Bochner principle and its applications to Fujiki class $\mathcal C$ manifolds with vanishing first Chern class

We prove a Bochner type vanishing theorem for compact complex manifolds $Y$ in Fujiki class $\mathcal C$, with vanishing first Chern class, that admit a cohomology class $[α] \in H^{1,1}(Y,\mathbb R)$ which is numerically effective (nef) and has positive self-intersection (meaning $\int_Y α^n \,>\, 0$, where $n\,=\,\dim_{\mathbb C} Y$). Using it, we prove that all holomorphic geometric structures of affine type on such a manifold $Y$ are locally homogeneous on a non-empty Zariski open subset. Consequently, if the geometric structure is rigid in the sense of Gromov, then the fundamental group of $Y$ must be infinite. In the particular case where the geometric structure is a holomorphic Riemannian metric, we show that the manifold $Y$ admits a finite unramified cover by a complex torus with the property that the pulled back holomorphic Riemannian metric on the torus is translation invariant.

Real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin twistor space

We study the holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of a compact Riemann surface that are invariant under the natural anti-holomorphic involutions of the moduli space. Their relationships with the harmonic maps are established. As a bi-product, a question of Simpson on such sections, posed in \cite{Si2}, is answered.
