Quot schemes and Ricci semipositivity

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two, and let ${\mathcal Q}_X(r,d)$ be the quot scheme that parametrizes all the torsion coherent quotients of ${\mathcal O}^{\oplus r}_X$ of degree $d$. This ${\mathcal Q}_X(r,d)$ is also a moduli space of vortices on $X$. Its geometric properties have been extensively studied. Here we prove that the anticanonical line bundle of ${\mathcal Q}_X(r,d)$ is not nef. Equivalently, ${\mathcal Q}_X(r,d)$ does not admit any Kähler metric whose Ricci curvature is semipositive.

Isomonodromic deformations and very stable vector bundles of rank two

For the universal isomonodromic deformation of an irreducible logarithmic rank two connection over a smooth complex projective curve of genus at least two, consider the family of holomorphic vector bundles over curves underlying this universal deformation. In a previous work we proved that the vector bundle corresponding to a general parameter of this family is stable. Here we prove that the vector bundle corresponding to a general parameter is in fact very stable (it does not admit any nonzero nilpotent Higgs field).

The full automorphism group of $\overline{T}$

Let $\overline G$ be the wonderful compactification of a simple affine algebraic group $G$ of adjoint type defined over $\mathbb C.$ Let ${\overline T}\subset \overline G$ be the closure of a maximal torus $T\subset G.$ We prove that the group of all automorphisms of the variety $\overline T$ is the semi-direct product $N_G(T)\rtimes D,$ where $N_G(T)$ is the normalizer of $T$ in $G$ and $D$ is the group of all automorphisms of the Dynkin diagram, if $G\not= {\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. Note that if $G = {\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, then $\overline{T} = {\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^1$ and so in this case $\text{Aut}(\overline T)= {\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$.

Representations of surface groups with finite mapping class group orbits

Let $(S,\, \ast)$ be a closed oriented surface with a marked point, let $G$ be a fixed group, and let $ρ\colonπ_1(S) \longrightarrow G$ be a representation such that the orbit of $ρ$ under the action of the mapping class group $Mod(S,\, \ast)$ is finite. We prove that the image of $ρ$ is finite. A similar result holds if $π_1(S)$ is replaced by the free group $F_n$ on $n\geq 2$ generators and where $Mod(S,\, \ast)$ is replaced by $Aut(F_n)$. We thus resolve a well-known question of M. Kisin. We show that if $G$ is a linear algebraic group and if the representation variety of $π_1(S)$ is replaced by the character variety, then there are infinite image representations which are fixed by the whole mapping class group.

A Tannakian approach to dimensional reduction of principal bundles

Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of a connected simply connected complex semisimple Lie group $G$. Given a compact Kähler manifold $X$, the dimensional reduction of $G$-equivariant holomorphic vector bundles over $X\times G/P$ was carried out by the first and third authors. This raises the question of dimensional reduction of holomorphic principal bundles over $X\times G/P$. The method used for equivariant vector bundles does not generalize to principal bundles. In this paper, we adapt to equivariant principal bundles the Tannakian approach of Nori, to describe the dimensional reduction of $G$-equivariant principal bundles over $X\times G/P$, and to establish a Hitchin--Kobayashi type correspondence. In order to be able to apply the Tannakian theory, we need to assume that $X$ is a complex projective manifold.

Homotopic properties of Kähler orbifolds

We prove the formality and the evenness of odd-degree Betti numbers for compact Kähler orbifolds, by adapting the classical proofs for Kähler manifolds. As a consequence, we obtain examples of symplectic orbifolds not admitting any Kähler orbifold structure. We also review the known examples of non-formal simply connected Sasakian manifolds, and produce an example of a non-formal quasi-regular Sasakian manifold with Betti numbers $b_1=0$ and $b_2\,> 1$.

Equality of the algebraic and geometric ranks of Cartan subalgebras and applications to linearization of a system of ordinary differential equations

If $L$ is a semisimple Lie algebra of vector fields on R^N with a split Cartan subalgebra C, then it is proved that the dimension of the generic orbit of C coincides with the dimension of C. As a consequence one obtains a local canonical form of L in terms of exponentials of coordinate functions and vector fields that are independent of these coordinates -- for a suitable choice of coordinates. This result is used to classify semisimple algebras of vector fields on R^3 and to determine all representations of sl(N, R) as vector fields on R^N. These representations are used to find linearizing coordinates for any second order ordinary differential equation that admits sl(3, R) as its symmetry algebra and for a system of two second order ordinary differential equations that admits sl(4, R) as its symmetry algebra.

Involutions of the moduli spaces of $G$-Higgs bundles over elliptic curves

We present a systematic study of involutions on the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over an elliptic curve $X$, where $G$ is complex reductive affine algebraic group. The fixed point loci in the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles on $X$, and in the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of $X$ into $G$, are described. This leads to an explicit description of the moduli spaces of pseudo-real $G$-Higgs bundles over $X$.

Higgs bundles on Sasakian manifolds

We extend the Donaldson-Corlette-Hitchin-Simpson correspondence between Higgs bundles and flat connections on compact Kähler manifolds to compact quasi-regular Sasakian manifolds. A particular consequence is the translation of restrictions on Kähler groups proved using the Donaldson-Corlette-Hitchin-Simpson correspondence to fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds.

Equivariant bundles and connections

Let $X$ be a connected complex manifold equipped with a holomorphic action of a complex Lie group $G$. We investigate conditions under which a principal bundle on $X$ admits a $G$--equivariance structure.

Differential geometry of moduli spaces of quiver bundles

Let P be a parabolic subgroup of a simple affine algebraic group G defined over C and X a compact connected Kähler manifold. L. Álvarez-Cónsul and O. García-Prada associated to these a quiver Q and representations of Q into holomorphic vector bundles on X. Our aim here is to investigate the differential geometric properties of the moduli spaces representations of Q into vector bundles on X. In particular, we construct a Hermitian form on these moduli spaces. A fiber integral formula is proved for this Hermitian form; this fiber integral formula implies that the Hermitian form is Kähler. We compute the curvature of this Kähler form. Under an assumption which says that X is a complex projective manifold, this Kähler form is realized as the curvature of a certain determinant line bundle equipped with a Quillen metric.

A criterion for a degree-one holomorphic map to be a biholomorphism

Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact connected complex manifolds of the same dimension with $b_2(X)= b_2(Y)$. We prove that any surjective holomorphic map of degree one from $X$ to $Y$ is a biholomorphism. A version of this was established by the first two authors, but under an extra assumption that $\dim H^1(X {\mathcal O}_X)\,=\,\dim H^1(Y {\mathcal O}_Y)$. We show that this condition is actually automatically satisfied.

Hodge locus and Brill-Noether type locus

Given a family $π:\mc{X} \rightarrow B$ of smooth projective varieties, a closed fiber $\mc{X}_o$ and an invertible sheaf $\mc{L}$ on $\mc{X}_o$, we compare the Hodge locus in $B$ corresponding to the Hodge class $c_1(\mc{L})$ with the locus of points $b\,\in\, B$ such that $\mc{L}$ deforms to an invertible sheaf $\mc{L}_b$ on $\mc{X}_b$ with at least $h^0(\mc{L})$--dimensional space of global sections (it is a Brill-Noether type locus associated to $\mc{L}$). We finally give an application by comparing the Brill-Noether locus to a family of curves on a surface passing through a fixed set of points.

Brauer group of moduli of Higgs bundles and connections

Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ and a semisimple affine algebraic group $G$ defined over $\mathbb C$, there are moduli spaces of Higgs bundles and of connections associated to $(X,\, G)$. We compute the Brauer group of the smooth locus of these varieties.

Yang-Mills-Higgs connections on Calabi-Yau manifolds, II

In this paper we study Higgs and co-Higgs $G$-bundles on compact Kähler manifolds $X$. Our main results are: (1) If $X$ is Calabi-Yau, and $(E,\,θ)$ is a semistable Higgs or co-Higgs $G$-bundle on $X$, then the principal $G$-bundle $E$ is semistable. In particular, there is a deformation retract of ${\mathcal M}_H(G)$ onto $\mathcal M(G)$, where $\mathcal M(G)$ is the moduli space of semistable principal $G$-bundles with vanishing rational Chern classes on $X$, and analogously, ${\mathcal M}_H(G)$ is the moduli space of semistable principal Higgs $G$-bundles with vanishing rational Chern classes. (2) Calabi-Yau manifolds are characterized as those compact Kähler manifolds whose tangent bundle is semistable for every Kähler class, and have the following property: if $(E,\,θ)$ is a semistable Higgs or co-Higgs vector bundle, then $E$ is semistable.

On connections on principal bundles

A new construction of a universal connection was given in \cite{BHS}. The main aim here is to explain this construction. A theorem of Atiyah and Weil says that a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a compact Riemann surface admits a holomorphic connection if and only if the degree of every direct summand of $E$ is degree. In \cite{AB}, this criterion was generalized to principal bundles on compact Riemann surfaces. This criterion for principal bundles is also explained.

On the Kaehler metrics over ${mathrm{Sym}^{d}(X)$

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g \geq 2$. For each $d <η(X)$, where $η(X)$ is the gonality of $X$, the symmetric product $\text{Sym}^d(X)$ embeds into $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ by sending an effective divisor of degree $d$ to the corresponding holomorphic line bundle. Therefore, the restriction of the flat Kähler metric on $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ is a Kähler metric on $\text{Sym}^d(X)$. We investigate this Kähler metric on $\text{Sym}^d(X)$. In particular, we estimate it's Bergman kernel. We also prove that any holomorphic automorphism of $\text{Sym}^d(X)$ is an isometry.

Isomonodromic deformations of irregular connections and stability of bundles

Let $G$ be a reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$, and let $\nabla_0$ be a meromorphic $G$-connection on a holomorphic $G$-bundle $E_0$, over a smooth complex curve $X_0$, with polar locus $P_0 \subset X_0$. We assume that $\nabla_0$ is irreducible in the sense that it does not factor through some proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. We consider the universal isomonodromic deformation $(E_t\to X_t, \nabla_t, P_t)_{t\in \mathcal{T}}$ of $(E_0\to X_0, \nabla_0, P_0)$, where $\mathcal{T}$ is a certain quotient of a certain framed Teichmüller space we describe. We show that if the genus $g$ of $X_0$ satisfies $g\geq 2$, then for a general parameter $t\in \mathcal{T}$, the $G$-bundle $E_t\to X_t$ is stable. For $g\geq 1$, we are able to show that for a general parameter $t\in \mathcal{T}$, the $G$-bundle $E_t\to X_t$ is semistable.
