Kodaira-Spencer theory for flux backgrounds

We give an explicit description (in component fields) of a holomorphic theory associated to a general supersymmetric background of $\mathcal N=1$ supergravity in ten dimensions. Conjecturally, this provides a sought-for holomorphic realisation of the supergravity twist in such backgrounds, generalising the minimal type I BCOV theory for Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our theory unpacks the recently introduced Courant contact model associated to a holomorphic Courant algebroid. We also show that a coisotropic reduction of this model reproduces the recent model of ref [1], which is formulated in terms of constrained fields.

Duality of generalized Maxwell theories as an equivalence in derived geometry

We propose a non-perturbative description of the moduli spaces encoding p-form generalized Maxwell theories in any dimension, using derived differential geometry. Our approach synthesizes the Batalin--Vilkovisky formalism with differential cohomology. Within this framework we formulate Dirac charge quantization and show how such charge-quantized moduli spaces exhibit abelian duality between generalized Maxwell theories of different types. We also describe the compactification of generalized Maxwell theories along closed Riemannian manifolds by computing the pushforward of the underlying sheaves of cochain complexes that model differential cohomology.

Kodaira-Spencer theory for Courant algebroids

Studying Courant algebroids on dg ringed manifolds, we observe that the associated Roytenberg-Weinstein $L_\infty$ algebra admits a local structure reminiscent of a shifted contact structure. On a dg ringed manifold with an $n$-orientation, its symplectification produces a sheaf of $(2-n)$-shifted symplectic formal moduli problems, which we call the Courant contact model. This construction can be interpreted as a ($\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-graded) theory in the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism whenever $n$ is odd. After developing the procedure of reduction and extension of scalars, we show how twisted backgrounds in type I supergravity naturally lead to Courant algebroids over the Dolbeault complex. Specialising to the case of a Calabi-Yau fivefold, we show that the Courant contact model for that Courant algebroid is equivalent to a central extension of minimal type I BCOV theory. Inspired by this, we extend the conjecture of Costello and Li and place it within the setting of generalized geometry, conjecturing a description of the BV formulation of type I supergravity in general twisted backgrounds.

Branes and DAHA Representations

Using brane quantization, we study the representation theory of the spherical double affine Hecke algebra of type $A_1$ in terms of the topological A-model on the moduli space of flat SL(2,C)-connections on a once-punctured torus. In particular, we provide an explicit match between finite-dimensional representations and A-branes with compact support; one consequence is the discovery of new finite-dimensional indecomposable representations. We proceed to embed the A-model story in an M-theory brane construction, closely related to the one used in the 3d/3d correspondence; as a result, we identify modular tensor categories behind particular finite-dimensional representations with PSL(2,Z) action. Using a further connection to the fivebrane system for the class S construction, we go on to study the relationship of Coulomb branch geometry and algebras of line operators in 4d N=2* theories to the double affine Hecke algebra.

Eleven-dimensional supergravity as a Calabi-Yau twofold

We construct a generalization of Poisson-Chern-Simons theory, defined on any supermanifold equipped with an appropriate filtration of the tangent bundle. Our construction recovers interacting eleven-dimensional supergravity in Cederwall's formulation, as well as all possible twists of the theory, and does so in a uniform and geometric fashion. Among other things, this proves that Costello's description of the maximal twist is the twist of eleven-dimensional supergravity in its pure spinor description. It also provides a pure spinor lift of the interactions in the minimally twisted theory. Our techniques enhance the BV formulation of the interactions of each theory to a homotopy Poisson structure by defining a compatible graded-commutative product; this suggests interpretations in terms of deformations of geometric structures on superspace, and provides some concrete evidence for a first-quantized origin of the theories.

Local superconformal algebras

Given a supermanifold equipped with an odd distribution of maximal dimension and constant symbol, we construct the formal moduli problem of deformations of the distribution. This moduli problem is described by a local super dg Lie algebra that provides both a resolution of the structure-preserving vector fields on superspace and a derived enhancement of superconformal symmetry. Applying our construction in standard physical examples returns the conformal supergravity multiplet in every known example, in any dimension and with any amount of supersymmetry$\unicode{x2014}$whether or not a superconformal algebra exists. We discuss new examples related to twisted supergravity, higher Virasoro algebras, and exceptional super Lie algebras. The compatibility of our techniques with twisting also leads to a computation of every twist of the stress tensor multiplet of a superconformal theory, including universal operator product expansions. Our approach uses a derived model for the space of functions constant along the distribution, which is applicable even when the distribution is non-involutive; we construct other natural multiplets, such as Kähler differentials, that appear naturally through this lens on superspace geometry.

Canonical supermultiplets and their Koszul duals

The pure spinor superfield formalism reveals that, in any dimension and with any amount of supersymmetry, one particular supermultiplet is distinguished from all others. This "canonical supermultiplet" is equipped with an additional structure that is not apparent in any component-field formalism: a (homotopy) commutative algebra structure on the space of fields. The structure is physically relevant in several ways; it is responsible for the interactions in ten-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory, as well as crucial to any first-quantised interpretation. We study the $L_\infty$ algebra structure that is Koszul dual to this commutative algebra, both in general and in numerous examples, and prove that it is equivalent to the subalgebra of the Koszul dual to functions on the space of generalised pure spinors in internal degree greater than or equal to three. In many examples, the latter is the positive part of a Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebra. Using this result, we can interpret the canonical multiplet as the homotopy fiber of the map from generalised pure spinor space to its derived replacement. This generalises and extends work of Movshev-Schwarz and Gálvez-Gorbounov-Shaikh-Tonks in the same spirit. We also comment on some issues with physical interpretations of the canonical multiplet, which are illustrated by an example related to the complex Cayley plane, and on possible extensions of our construction, which appear relevant in an example with symmetry type $G_2 \times A_1$.

The Derived Pure Spinor Formalism as an Equivalence of Categories

We construct a derived generalization of the pure spinor superfield formalism and prove that it exhibits an equivalence of dg-categories between multiplets for a supertranslation algebra and equivariant modules over its Chevalley-Eilenberg cochains. This equivalence is closely linked to Koszul duality for the supertranslation algebra. After introducing and describing the category of supermultiplets, we define the derived pure spinor construction explicitly as a dg-functor. We then show that the functor that takes the derived supertranslation invariants of any supermultiplet is a quasi-inverse to the pure spinor construction, using an explicit calculation. Finally, we illustrate our findings with examples and use insights from the derived formalism to answer some questions regarding the ordinary (underived) pure spinor superfield formalism.

Six-dimensional supermultiplets from bundles on projective spaces

The projective variety of square-zero elements in the six-dimensional minimal supersymmetry algebra is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^3$. We use this fact, together with the pure spinor superfield formalism, to study supermultiplets in six dimensions, starting from vector bundles on projective spaces. We classify all multiplets whose derived invariants for the supertranslation algebra form a line bundle over the nilpotence variety; one can think of such multiplets as being those whose holomorphic twists have rank one over Dolbeault forms on spacetime. In addition, we explicitly construct multiplets associated to natural higher-rank equivariant vector bundles, including the tangent and normal bundles as well as their duals. Among the multiplets constructed are the vector multiplet and hypermultiplet, the family of $\mathcal{O}(n)$-multiplets, and the supergravity and gravitino multiplets. Along the way, we tackle various theoretical problems within the pure spinor superfield formalism. In particular, we give some general discussion about the relation of the projective nilpotence variety to multiplets and prove general results on short exact sequences and dualities of sheaves in the context of the pure spinor superfield formalism.

Holomorphic boundary conditions for topological field theories via branes in twisted supergravity

Three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric field theories admit a natural class of chiral half-BPS boundary conditions that preserve $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry. While such boundary conditions are not compatible with topological twists, deformations that define boundary conditions for the topological theories were recently introduced by Costello and Gaiotto. Not all $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ boundary conditions admit such deformations. We revisit this construction, working directly in the setting of the holomorphically twisted theory and viewing the topological twists as further deformations. Properties of the construction are explained both purely in the context of holomorphic field theory and also by engineering the holomorphic theory on the worldvolume of a D-brane. Our brane engineering approach combines the intersecting brane configurations of Hanany-Witten with recent work of Costello and Li on twisted supergravity. The latter approach allows to realize holomorphically and topologically twisted field theories directly as worldvolume theories in deformed supergravity backgrounds, and we make extensive use of this.

Constraints in the BV formalism: six-dimensional supersymmetry and its twists

We formulate the abelian six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory perturbatively, in a generalization of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. Using this description, we compute the holomorphic and non-minimal twists at the perturbative level. This calculation hinges on the existence of an $L_\infty$ action of the supersymmetry algebra on the abelian tensor multiplet, which we describe in detail. Our formulation appears naturally in the pure spinor superfield formalism, but understanding it requires developing a presymplectic generalization of the BV formalism, inspired by Dirac's theory of constraints. The holomorphic twist consists of symplectic-valued holomorphic bosons from the $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ hypermultiplet, together with a degenerate holomorphic theory of holomorphic coclosed one-forms from the $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ tensor multiplet, which can be interpreted as representing the intermediate Jacobian. We check that our formulation and our results match with known ones under various dimensional reductions, as well as comparing the holomorphic twist to Kodaira-Spencer theory. Matching our formalism to five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory after reduction leads to some issues related to electric-magnetic duality; we offer some speculation on a nonperturbative resolution.

Perspectives on the pure spinor superfield formalism

In this note, we study, formalize, and generalize the pure spinor superfield formalism from a rather nontraditional perspective. To set the stage, we review the notion of a multiplet for a general super Lie algebra, working in the context of the BV and BRST formalisms. Building on this, we explain how the pure spinor superfield formalism can be viewed as constructing a supermultiplet out of the input datum of an equivariant graded module over the ring of functions on the nilpotence variety. We use the homotopy transfer theorem and other computational techniques from homological algebra to relate these multiplets to more standard component-field formulations. Physical properties of the resulting multiplets can then be understood in terms of algebrogeometric properties of the nilpotence variety. We illustrate our discussion with many examples in various dimensions.

Superconformal algebras and holomorphic field theories

We show that four-dimensional superconformal algebras admit an infinite-dimensional derived enhancement after performing a holomorphic twist. The type of higher symmetry algebras we find are closely related to algebras studied by Faonte-Hennion-Kapranov, Hennion-Kapranov, and the second author with Gwilliam in the context of holomorphic QFT. We show that these algebras are related to the two-dimensional chiral algebras extracted from four-dimensional superconformal theories by Beem and collaborators; further deforming by a superconformal element induces the Koszul resolution of a plane in $\mathbb{C}^2 \cong \mathbb{R}^4$. The central charges at the level of chiral algebras arise from central extensions of the higher symmetry algebras.

Twisted eleven-dimensional supergravity

We construct a fully interacting holomorphic/topological theory in eleven dimensions that is defined on products of Calabi-Yau fivefolds with real one-manifolds. The theory describes a particular deformation of the cotangent bundle to the moduli space of Calabi-Yau structures on the fivefold. Its field content matches the holomorphic (or minimal) twist of the eleven-dimensional supergravity multiplet recently computed by the second two authors, and we offer numerous consistency checks showing that the interactions correctly describe interacting twisted eleven-dimensional supergravity at the perturbative level. We prove that the global symmetry algebra of our model on flat space is an $L_\infty$ central extension of the infinite-dimensional simple exceptional super Lie algebra $E(5,10)$, following a recent suggestion of Cederwall in the context of the relevant pure spinor model. Twists of superconformal algebras map to the fields of our model on the complement of a stack of M2 or M5 branes, laying the groundwork for a fully holomorphic version of twisted holography in this context.

Twisting pure spinor superfields, with applications to supergravity

We study twists of supergravity theories and supersymmetric field theories, using a version of the pure spinor superfield formalism. Our results show that, just as the component fields of supersymmetric multiplets are the vector bundles associated to the equivariant Koszul homology of the variety of square-zero elements in the supersymmetry algebra, the component fields of the holomorphic twists of the corresponding multiplets are the holomorphic vector bundles associated to the equivariant Koszul homology of square-zero elements in the twisted supersymmetry algebra. The BRST or BV differentials of the free multiplet are induced by the brackets of the corresponding super Lie algebra in each case. We make this precise in a variety of examples; applications include rigorous computations of the minimal twists of eleven-dimensional and type IIB supergravity, in the free perturbative limit. The latter result proves a conjecture by Costello and Li, relating the IIB multiplet directly to a presymplectic BV version of minimal BCOV theory.

Twisted characters and holomorphic symmetries

We consider holomorphic twists of arbitrary supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Working in the BV formalism, we rederive classical results characterizing the holomorphic twist of chiral and vector supermultiplets, computing the twist explicitly as a family over the space of nilpotent supercharges in minimal supersymmetry. The BV formalism allows one to work with or without auxiliary fields, according to preference; for chiral superfields, we show that the result of the twist is an identical BV theory, the holomorphic $βγ$ system with superpotential, independent of whether or not auxiliary fields are included. We compute the character of local operators in this holomorphic theory, demonstrating agreement of the free local operators with the usual index of free fields. The local operators with superpotential are computed via a spectral sequence, and are shown to agree with functions on a formal mapping space into the derived critical locus of the superpotential. We consider the holomorphic theory on various geometries, including Hopf manifolds and products of arbitrary pairs of Riemann surfaces, and offer some general remarks on dimensional reductions of holomorphic theories along the $(n-1)$-sphere to topological quantum mechanics. We also study an infinite-dimensional enhancement of the flavor symmetry in this example, to a recently-studied central extension of the derived holomorphic functions with values in the original Lie algebra that generalizes the familiar Kac--Moody enhancement in two-dimensional chiral theories.

Nonarchimedean Holographic Entropy from Networks of Perfect Tensors

We consider a class of holographic quantum error-correcting codes, built from perfect tensors in network configurations dual to Bruhat-Tits trees and their quotients by Schottky groups corresponding to BTZ black holes. The resulting holographic states can be constructed in the limit of infinite network size. We obtain a $p$-adic version of entropy which obeys a Ryu-Takayanagi like formula for bipartite entanglement of connected or disconnected regions, in both genus-zero and genus-one $p$-adic backgrounds, along with a Bekenstein-Hawking-type formula for black hole entropy. We prove entropy inequalities obeyed by such tensor networks, such as subadditivity, strong subadditivity, and monogamy of mutual information (which is always saturated). In addition, we construct infinite classes of perfect tensors directly from semiclassical states in phase spaces over finite fields, generalizing the CRSS algorithm, and give Hamiltonians exhibiting these as vacua.

Signs of the time: Melonic theories over diverse number systems

Melonic field theories are defined over the $p$-adic numbers with the help of a sign character. Our construction works over the reals as well as the $p$-adics, and it includes the fermionic and bosonic Klebanov-Tarnopolsky models as special cases; depending on the sign character, the symmetry group of the field theory can be either orthogonal or symplectic. Analysis of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the two-point function in the leading melonic limit shows that power law scaling behavior in the infrared arises for fermionic theories when the sign character is non-trivial, and for bosonic theories when the sign character is trivial. In certain cases, the Schwinger-Dyson equation can be solved exactly using a quartic polynomial equation, and the solution interpolates between the ultraviolet scaling controlled by the spectral parameter and the universal infrared scaling. As a by-product of our analysis, we see that melonic field theories defined over the real numbers can be modified by replacing the time derivative by a bilocal kinetic term with a continuously variable spectral parameter. The infrared scaling of the resulting two-point function is universal, independent of the spectral parameter of the ultraviolet theory.
