Local and non-local properties of the entanglement Hamiltonian for two disjoint intervals

We consider free-fermion chains in the ground state and the entanglement Hamiltonian for a subsystem consisting of two separated intervals. In this case, one has a peculiar long-range hopping between the intervals in addition to the well-known and dominant short-range hopping. We show how the continuum expressions can be recovered from the lattice results for general filling and arbitrary intervals. We also discuss the closely related case of a single interval located at a certain distance from the end of a semi-infinite chain and the continuum limit for this problem. Finally, we show that for the double interval in the continuum a commuting operator exists which can be used to find the eigenstates.

Entanglement Hamiltonians for non-critical quantum chains

We study the entanglement Hamiltonian for finite intervals in infinite quantum chains for two different free-particle systems: coupled harmonic oscillators and fermionic hopping models with dimerization. Working in the ground state, the entanglement Hamiltonian describes again free bosons or fermions and is obtained from the correlation functions via high-precision numerics for up to several hundred sites. Far away from criticality, the dominant on-site and nearest-neighbour terms have triangular profiles that can be understood from the analytical results for a half-infinite interval. Near criticality, the longer-range couplings, although small, lead to a more complex picture. A comparison between the exact spectra and entanglement entropies and those resulting from the dominant terms in the Hamiltonian is also reported.

On the continuum limit of the entanglement Hamiltonian

We consider the entanglement Hamiltonian for an interval in a chain of free fermions in its ground state and show that the lattice expression goes over into the conformal one if one includes the hopping to distant neighbours in the continuum limit. For an infinite chain, this can be done analytically for arbitrary fillings and is shown to be the consequence of the particular structure of the entanglement Hamiltonian, while for finite rings or temperatures the result is based on numerical calculations.

Properties of the entanglement Hamiltonian for finite free-fermion chains

We study the entanglement Hamiltonian for fermionic hopping models on rings and open chains and determine single-particle spectra, eigenfunctions and the form in real space. For the chain, we find a commuting operator as for the ring and compare with its properties in both cases. In particular, a scaling relation between the eigenvalues is found for large systems. We also show how the commutation property carries over to the critical transverse Ising model.

Analytical results for the entanglement Hamiltonian of a free-fermion chain

We study the ground-state entanglement Hamiltonian for an interval of $N$ sites in a free-fermion chain with arbitrary filling. By relating it to a commuting operator, we find explicit expressions for its matrix elements in the large-$N$ limit. The results agree with numerical calculations and show that deviations from the conformal prediction persist even for large systems.

Entanglement in composite free-fermion systems

We consider fermionic chains where the two halves are either metals with different bandwidths or a metal and an insulator. Both are coupled together by a special bond. We study the ground-state entanglement entropy between the two pieces, its dependence on the parameters and its asymptotic form. We also discuss the features of the entanglement Hamiltonians in both subsystems and the evolution of the entanglement entropy after joining the two parts of the system.

Surface and bulk entanglement in free-fermion chains

We consider free-fermion chains where full and empty parts are connected by a transition region with narrow surfaces. This can be caused by a linear potential or by time evolution from a step-like initial state. Entanglement spectra, entanglement entropies and fluctuations are determined for subsystems either in the surface region or extending into the bulk. In all cases there is logarithmic behaviour in the subsystem size, but the prefactors in the surface differ from those in the bulk by 3/2. A previous fluctuation result is corrected and a general scaling formula is inferred from the data.

Free-fermion entanglement and spheroidal functions

We consider the entanglement properties of free fermions in one dimension and review an approach which relates the problem to the solution of a certain differential equation. The single-particle eigenfunctions of the entanglement Hamiltonian are then seen to be spheroidal functions or generalizations of them. The analytical results for the eigenvalue spectrum agree with those obtained by other methods. In the continuum case, there are close connections to random matrix theory.

On entanglement evolution across defects in critical chains

We consider a local quench where two free-fermion half-chains are coupled via a defect. We show that the logarithmic increase of the entanglement entropy is governed by the same effective central charge which appears in the ground-state properties and which is known exactly. For unequal initial filling of the half-chains, we determine the linear increase of the entanglement entropy.

Exact results for the entanglement across defects in critical chains

We consider fermionic and bosonic quantum chains where a defect separates two subsystems and compare the corresponding entanglement spectra. With these, we calculate their Rényi entanglement entropies and obtain analytical formulae for the continuously varying coefficient of the leading logarithmic term. For the bosonic case we also present numerical results.

Entanglement in solvable many-particle models

Lecture notes for the Brazilian School on Statistical Mechanics, Natal, Brazil, July 2011. The five lectures introduce to the description of entanglement in many-particle systems and review the ground-state entanglement features of standard solvable lattice models. This is done using a thermodynamic formulation in which the eigenvalue spectrum of a certain Hamiltonian determines the entanglement properties. The methods to obtain it are discussed and results, both analytical and numerical, for various cases including time evolution are presented.

On the relation between entanglement and subsystem Hamiltonians

We show that a proportionality between the entanglement Hamiltonian and the Hamiltonian of a subsystem exists near the limit of maximal entanglement under certain conditions. Away from that limit, solvable models show that the coupling range differs in both quantities and allow to investigate the effect.

Corrections to scaling for block entanglement in massive spin-chains

We consider the Renyi entropies S_n in one-dimensional massive integrable models diagonalizable by means of corner transfer matrices (as Heisenberg and Ising spin chains). By means of explicit examples and using the relation of corner transfer matrix with the Virasoro algebra, we show that close to a conformal invariant critical point, when the correlation length xi is finite but large, the corrections to the scaling are of the unusual form xi^(-x/n), with x the dimension of a relevant operator in the conformal theory. This is reminiscent of the results for gapless chains and should be valid for any massive one-dimensional model close to a conformal critical point.

Solution of the fermionic entanglement problem with interface defects

We study the ground-state entanglement of two halves of a critical transverse Ising chain, separated by an interface defect. From the relation to a two-dimensional Ising model with a defect line we obtain an exact expression for the continuously varying effective central charge. The result is relevant also for other fermionic chains.

On reduced density matrices for disjoint subsystems

We show that spin and fermion representations for solvable quantum chains lead in general to different reduced density matrices if the subsystem is not singly connected. We study the effect for two sites in XX and XY chains as well as for sublattices in XX and transverse Ising chains.

Reduced density matrices and entanglement entropy in free lattice models

We review the properties of reduced density matrices for free fermionic or bosonic many-particle systems in their ground state. Their basic feature is that they have a thermal form and thus lead to a quasi-thermodynamic problem with a certain free-particle Hamiltonian. We discuss the derivation of this result, the character of the Hamiltonian and its eigenstates, the single-particle spectra and the full spectra, the resulting entanglement and in particular the entanglement entropy. This is done for various one- and two-dimensional situations, including also the evolution after global or local quenches.

Entanglement in a periodic quench

We consider a chain of free electrons with periodically switched dimerization and study the entanglement entropy of a segment with the remainder of the system. We show that it evolves in a stepwise manner towards a value proportional to the length of the segment and displays in general slow oscillations. For particular quench periods and full dimerization an explicit solution is given. Relations to equilibrium lattice models are pointed out.

On single-copy entanglement

The largest eigenvalue of the reduced density matrix for quantum chains is shown to have a simple physical interpretation and power-law behaviour in critical systems. This is verified numerically for XXZ spin chains.
