Telling compositeness at a distance with outer automorphisms and CP

We investigate charge-parity (CP) and non-CP outer automorphism of groups and the transformation behavior of group representations under them. We identify situations where composite and elementary states that transform in exactly the same representation of the group, transform differently under outer automorphisms. This can be instrumental in discriminating composite from elementary states solely by their quantum numbers with respect to the outer automorphism, i.e. without the need for explicit short distance scattering experiments. We discuss under what conditions such a distinction is unequivocally possible. We cleanly separate the case of symmetry constrained (representation) spaces from the case of multiple copies of identical representations in flavor space, and identify conditions under which non-trivial transformation in flavor space can be enforced for composite states. Next to composite product states, we also discuss composite states in non-product representations. Comprehensive examples are given based on the finite groups $\Sigma(72)$ and $D_8$. The discussion also applies to $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ and we scrutinize recent claims in the literature that $\mathrm{SU}(2N)$ outer automorphism with antisymmetric matrices correspond to distinct outer automorphisms. We show that outer automorphism transformations with antisymmetric matrices are related by an inner automorphism to the standard $\mathbb{Z}_2$ outer automorphism of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$. As a direct implication, no non-trivial transformation behavior can arise for composite product states under the outer automorphism of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$.

Searching for new physics from SMEFT and leptoquarks at the P2 experiment

The P2 experiment aims at high-precision measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron-proton and electron-$^{12}$C scatterings with longitudinally polarized electrons. We discuss here the sensitivity of P2 to leptoquarks, which within the P2 energy range can be described in the language of Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We give the expected P2 limits on the SMEFT operators and on the leptoquark parameters, which will test energy scales up to 15 TeV. In many cases those limits exceed current constraints from LHC and atomic parity violation (APV) experiments. We also demonstrate that degeneracies of different SMEFT operators can partially be resolved by use of APV experiments and different targets (protons and $^{12}$C) at P2. Moreover, we show that P2 could confirm or resolve potential tensions between the theoretical and experimental determinations of the weak charge of $^{133}$Cs.

Simultaneous Block Diagonalization of Matrices of Finite Order

It is well known that a set of non-defect matrices can be simultaneously diagonalized if and only if the matrices commute. In the case of non-commuting matrices, the best that can be achieved is simultaneous block diagonalization. Here we give an efficient algorithm to explicitly compute a transfer matrix which realizes the simultaneous block diagonalization of unitary matrices whose decomposition in irreducible blocks (common invariant subspaces) is known from elsewhere. Our main motivation lies in particle physics, where the resulting transfer matrix must be known explicitly in order to unequivocally determine the action of outer automorphisms such as parity, charge conjugation, or time reversal on the particle spectrum.

Dark Matter EFT, the Third -- Neutrino WIMPs

Sterile neutrinos coupling only to third-generation fermions are attractive dark matter candidates. In an EFT approach we demonstrate that they can generate the observed relic density without violating constraints from direct and indirect detection. Such an EFT represents a gauged third-generation $B-L$ model, as well as third-generation scalar or vector leptoquarks. LHC measurements naturally distinguish the different underlying models.

General Neutrino Interactions from an Effective Field Theory Perspective

General Neutrino Interactions (GNI) are scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial vector or tensor interactions of neutrinos with fermions, and generalise the often studied neutrino Non-Standard Interactions (NSI). If GNI arise from heavy new physics, they should be embeddable into effective field theory operators that respect the Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry. Therefore we consider a full basis of gauge-invariant dimension-six operators involving SM fermions and right-handed singlet neutrinos and map their Wilson coefficients onto GNI parameters. In this embedding we discuss correlations of and bounds on different GNI in the context of charged lepton flavour violation processes and neutrino-fermion scattering, as well as beta decay and coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering. We also study possible UV completions of the relevant dimension-six operators for GNI via leptoquarks that can be related to radiative neutrino masses and $B$ physics anomalies. Details on the numbers of free GNI parameters for Dirac or Majorana neutrinos and for CP violation or conservation are also provided.

On Quantum Fields at High Temperature

Revisiting the fast fermion damping rate calculation in a thermalized QED and/or QCD plasma at 4-loop order, focus is put on a peculiar perturbative structure which has no equivalent at zero-temperature. Not surprisingly and in agreement with previous $C^\star$-algebraic analyses, this structure renders the use of thermal perturbation theory quite questionable.

General Neutrino Interactions at the DUNE Near Detector

We consider the effect of general neutrino interactions (scalar, vector, pseudoscalar, axial vector and tensor) in neutrino-electron scattering at the DUNE near detector. Those interactions can be associated with heavy new physics and their effect is to cause distortions in the recoil spectrum of the electrons. We show that for some cases energy scales up to 9 TeV are accessible after a 5 year run and that current bounds on interaction parameters can be improved by up to an order of magnitude. The full set of general interactions includes the usually considered neutrino-electron non-standard matter interactions, and the near detector will give limits comparable but complementary to the ones from the analysis of neutrino oscillations in the far detector.

Loop-induced Neutrino Non-Standard Interactions

Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) of neutrinos may originate from models in which new particles interact with neutrinos. In scalar extensions of the SM, the typical approach to obtain NSI requires Fierz transformations and charged Higgses, which suffer from strong constraints from collider searches or charged lepton flavor violation processes. We propose here an alternative approach to generate NSI, namely via loop processes. We show that such loop-induced NSI from secret neutrino interactions can reach sizes of ${\cal O}(0.1\sim1)$ compared to standard Fermi interaction. This approach can also give rise to neutrino-quark NSI.

Massive fluctuations in deconfining SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics

We review how vertex constraints inherited from the thermal ground state strongly reduce the integration support of loop four-momenta associated with massive quasi-particles in bubble diagrams constituting corrections to the free thermal quasi-particle pressure. In spite of the observed increasingly suppressing effect when increasing 2-particle-irreducible (2PI) loop order, a quantitative analysis enables us to disprove the conjecture voiced in hep-th/0609033 that the loop expansion would terminate at a finite order. This reveals the necessity to investigate exact expressions of (at least some) higher-loop order diagrams. Explicit calculation shows that although the behaviour of the 2PI three-loop contribution at low temperatures displays hierarchical suppression compared to lower loop-orders, its high-temperature expression instead dominates all lower orders. However, an all-loop-order resummation of a class of 2PI bubble diagrams is shown to yield an analytic continuation of the low-temperature hierarchy to all temperatures in the deconfining phase.

Massive loops in thermal SU(2) Yang-Mills theory: Radiative corrections to the pressure beyond two loops

We device an efficient book-keeping of excluded energy-sign and scattering-channel combinations for the loop four-momenta associated with massive quasi-particles, circulating in (connected) bubble diagrams subject to vertex constraints inherited from the thermal ground state. The according radiative corrections modify the free thermal-quasiparticle pressure at one loop. Increasing the loop order in two-particle irreducible (2PI) bubble diagrams, we exemplarily demonstrate a suppressing effect of the vertex constraints on the number of valid combinations. This increasingly strong suppression gave rise to the conjecture in hep-th/0609033 that the loop expansion would terminate at a finite order. Albeit the low-temperature dependence of the 2PI 3-loop diagram complies with this behaviour, a thorough analysis of the high-temperature situation reveals that the leading power in temperature is thirteen such that this diagram dominates all lower loop orders for sufficiently high temperatures. An all-loop-order resummation of 2PI diagrams with dihedral symmetry is thus required, defining an extremely well-bounded analytical continuation of the low-temperatures result.
