Pattern recognition in complex systems via vector-field representations of spatio-temporal data

A complex system comprises multiple interacting entities whose interdependencies form a unified whole, exhibiting emergent behaviours not present in individual components. Examples include the human brain, living cells, soft matter, Earth's climate, ecosystems, and the economy. These systems exhibit high-dimensional, non-linear dynamics, making their modelling, classification, and prediction particularly challenging. Advances in information technology have enabled data-driven approaches to studying such systems. However, the sheer volume and complexity of spatio-temporal data often hinder traditional methods like dimensionality reduction, phase-space reconstruction, and attractor characterisation. This paper introduces a geometric framework for analysing spatio-temporal data from complex systems, grounded in the theory of vector fields over discrete measure spaces. We propose a two-parameter family of metrics suitable for data analysis and machine learning applications. The framework supports time-dependent images, image gradients, and real- or vector-valued functions defined on graphs and simplicial complexes. We validate our approach using data from numerical simulations of biological and physical systems on flat and curved domains. Our results show that the proposed metrics, combined with multidimensional scaling, effectively address key analytical challenges. They enable dimensionality reduction, mode decomposition, phase-space reconstruction, and attractor characterisation. Our findings offer a robust pathway for understanding complex dynamical systems, especially in contexts where traditional modelling is impractical but abundant experimental data are available.

Moduli spaces of flat Riemannian metrics on orbifolds

We study moduli spaces of flat metrics on closed Riemannian orbifolds admitting such metrics. We show that for such orbifolds $\mathcal{O}$, the Teichmüller space of flat metrics $\mathcal{T}_{\text{flat}}(\mathcal{O})$ serves as a classifying space for proper actions of the mapping class group, $\operatorname{MCG}(\mathcal{O})$, in the appropriate category. We show that the moduli space of flat metrics, $\mathcal{M}_{\text{flat}}(\mathcal{O}) = \mathcal{T}_{\text{flat}}(\mathcal{O}) / \operatorname{MCG}(\mathcal{O})$, is itself a very good orbifold, and, under a technical assumption, describe this orbifold algebraically up to commensurability.

Metric Geometry of Spaces of Persistence Diagrams

Persistence diagrams are objects that play a central role in topological data analysis. In the present article, we investigate the local and global geometric properties of spaces of persistence diagrams. In order to do this, we construct a family of functors $\mathcal{D}_p$, $1\leq p \leq\infty$, that assign, to each metric pair $(X,A)$, a pointed metric space $\mathcal{D}_p(X,A)$. Moreover, we show that $\mathcal{D}_{\infty}$ is sequentially continuous with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of metric pairs, and we prove that $\mathcal{D}_p$ preserves several useful metric properties, such as completeness and separability, for $p \in [1,\infty)$, and geodesicity and non-negative curvature in the sense of Alexandrov, for $p=2$. For the latter case, we describe the metric of the space of directions at the empty diagram. We also show that the Fréchet mean set of a Borel probability measure on $\mathcal{D}_p(X,A)$, $1\leq p \leq\infty$, with finite second moment and compact support is non-empty. As an application of our geometric framework, we prove that the space of Euclidean persistence diagrams, $\mathcal{D}_{p}(\mathbb{R}^{2n},Δ_n)$, $1\leq n$ and $1\leq p<\infty$, has infinite covering, Hausdorff, asymptotic, Assouad, and Assouad-Nagata dimensions.
