Global weak solutions to the Quantum Navier-Stokes system in the whole space with a confining external potential

We consider a dissipative quantum fluid on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d\geq 1$) confined by an external harmonic potential. The dynamics of the quantum fluid is described by the Quantum Navier-Stokes (QNS) system which is a particular case of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg systems. The goal of this paper is to prove the existence of global weak solutions to the QNS system. To this end, we write the evolution equations with respect to a Gaussian reference measure and follow the general strategy of previous works. Nevertheless, several substantial modifications have to be done due to our choice of the reference measure.

A numerical study of vortex nucleation in 2D rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

This article introduces a new numerical method for the minimization under constraints of a discrete energy modeling multicomponents rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in the regime of strong confinement and with rotation. Moreover, we consider both segregation and coexistence regimes between the components. The method includes a discretization of a continuous energy in space dimension 2 and a gradient algorithm with adaptive time step and projection for the minimization. It is well known that, depending on the regime, the minimizers may display different structures, sometimes with vorticity (from singly quantized vortices, to vortex sheets and giant holes). In order to study numerically the structures of the minimizers, we introduce in this paper a numerical algorithm for the computation of the indices of the vortices, as well as an algorithm for the computation of the indices of vortex sheets. Several computations are carried out, to illustrate the efficiency of the method, to cover different physical cases, to validate recent theoretical results as well as to support conjectures. Moreover, we compare this method with an alternative method from the literature.

High order linearly implicit methods for semilinear evolution PDEs

This paper considers the numerical integration of semilinear evolution PDEs using the high order linearly implicit methods developped in a previous paper in the ODE setting. These methods use a collocation Runge--Kutta method as a basis, and additional variables that are updated explicitly and make the implicit part of the collocation Runge--Kutta method only linearly implicit. In this paper, we introduce several notions of stability for the underlying Runge--Kutta methods as well as for the explicit step on the additional variables necessary to fit the context of evolution PDE. We prove a main theorem about the high order of convergence of these linearly implicit methods in this PDE setting, using the stability hypotheses introduced before. We use nonlinear Schr\''odinger equations and heat equations as main examples but our results extend beyond these two classes of evolution PDEs. We illustrate our main result numerically in dimensions 1 and 2, and we compare the efficiency of the linearly implicit methods with other methods from the litterature. We also illustrate numerically the necessity of the stability conditions of our main result.

Â-and Î-stability of collocation Runge-Kutta methods

This paper deals with stability of classical Runge-Kutta collocation methods. When such methods are embedded in linearly implicit methods as developed in [12] and used in [13] for the time integration of nonlinear evolution PDEs, the stability of these methods has to be adapted to this context. For this reason, we develop in this paper several notions of stability, that we analyze. We provide sufficient conditions that can be checked algorithmically to ensure that these stability notions are fulfilled by a given Runge-Kutta collocation method. We also introduce examples and counterexamples used in [13] to highlight the necessity of these stability conditions in this context.

High order linearly implicit methods for evolution equations

This paper introduces a new class of numerical methods for the time integration of evolution equations set as Cauchy problems of ODEs or PDEs. The systematic design of these methods mixes the Runge-Kutta collocation formalism with collocation techniques, in such a way that the methods are linearly implicit and have high order. The fact that these methods are implicit allows to avoid CFL conditions when the large systems to integrate come from the space discretization of evolution PDEs. Moreover, these methods are expected to be efficient since they only require to solve one linear system of equations at each time step, and efficient techniques from the literature can be used to do so. After the introduction of the methods, we set suitable definitions of consistency and stability for these methods. This allows for a proof that arbitrarily high order linearly implicit methods exist and converge when applied to ODEs. Eventually, we perform numerical experiments on ODEs and PDEs that illustrate our theoretical results for ODEs, and compare our methods with standard methods for several evolution PDEs.

On the Exponential decay for Compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a Drag Term

In this paper, we consider global weak solutions to com-pressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with density dependent viscosities , in a periodic domain $Ω= \mathbb T^3$, with a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. The main result concerns the exponential decay to equilibrium of such solutions using log-sobolev type inequalities. In order to show such a result, the starting point is a global weak-entropy solutions definition introduced in D. Bresch, A. Vasseur and C. Yu [12]. Assuming extra assumptions on the shear viscosity when the density is close to vacuum and when the density tends to infinity, we conclude the exponential decay to equilibrium. Note that our result covers the quantum Navier-Stokes system with a drag term.

Energy preserving methods for nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations

This paper is concerned with the numerical integration in time of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations using different methods preserving the energy or a discrete analog of it. The Crank-Nicolson method is a well known method of order 2 but is fully implicit and one may prefer a linearly implicit method like the relaxation method introduced in [10] for the cubic nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation. This method is also an energy preserving method and numerical simulations have shown that its order is 2. In this paper we give a rigorous proof of the order of this relaxation method and propose a generalized version that allows to deal with general power law nonlinearites. Numerical simulations for different physical models show the efficiency of these methods.

On Navier-Stokes-Korteweg and Euler-Korteweg Systems: Application to Quantum Fluids Models

In this paper, the main objective is to generalize to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD relation) and Euler-Korteweg systems a recent relative entropy [proposed by D. Bresch, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] introduced for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent shear viscosity and a zero bulk viscosity. As a concrete application, this helps to justify mathematically the convergence between global weak solutions of the quantum Navier-Stokes system [recently obtained simultaneously by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasseur (2017)] and dissipative solutions of the quantum Euler system when the viscosity coefficient tends to zero: This selects a dissipative solution as the limit of a viscous system. We also get weak-strong uniqueness for the Quantum-Euler and for the Quantum-Navier-Stokes equations. Our results are based on the fact that Euler-Korteweg systems and corresponding Navier--Stokes-Korteweg systems can be reformulated through an augmented system such as the compressible Navier-Stokes system with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD algebraic relation. This was also observed recently [by D. Bresch, F. Couderc, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] for the Euler-Korteweg system for numerical purposes. As a by-product of our analysis, we show that this augmented formulation helps to define relative entropy estimates for the Euler Korteweg systems in a simplest way compared to recent works [See D. Donatelli, E. Feireisl, P. Marcati (2015) and J. Giesselmann, C. Lattanzio, A.-E. Tzavaras (2017)] with less hypothesis required on the capillary coefficient.

Global weak solutions to the compressible quantum navier-stokes equation and its semi-classical limit

This paper is dedicated to the construction of global weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equation, for any initial value with bounded energy and entropy. The construction is uniform with respect to the Planck constant. This allows to perform the semi-classical limit to the associated compressible Navier-Stokes equation. One of the difficulty of the problem is to deal with the degenerate viscosity, together with the lack of integrability on the velocity. Our method is based on the construction of weak solutions that are renormalized in the velocity variable. The existence, and stability of these solutions do not need the Mellet-Vasseur inequality.

Discrete Artificial Boundary Conditions for the Korteweg-de Vries Equation

In this paper we consider two numerical scheme based on trapezoidal rule in time for the linearized KdV equation in one space dimension. The goal is to derive some suitable artificial boundary conditions for these two full discretization using Z-transformation. We give some numerical benchmark examples from the literature to illustrate our findings.

High order exponential integrators for nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with application to rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

This article deals with the numerical integration in time of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations. The main application is the numerical simulation of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The authors perform a change of unknown so that the rotation term disappears and they obtain as a result a nonautonomous nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. They consider exponential integrators such as exponential Runge--Kutta methods and Lawson methods. They provide an analysis of the order of convergence and some preservation properties of these methods in a simplified setting and they supplement their results with numerical experiments with realistic physical parameters. Moreover, they compare these methods with the classical split-step methods applied to the same problem.

Convergence of a Finite Volume Scheme for a Corrosion Model

In this paper, we study the numerical approximation of a system of partial dif-ferential equations describing the corrosion of an iron based alloy in a nuclear waste repository. In particular, we are interested in the convergence of a numerical scheme consisting in an implicit Euler scheme in time and a Scharfetter-Gummel finite volume scheme in space.

On the existence of solutions for a drift-diffusion system arising in corrosion modelling

In this paper, we consider a drift-diffusion system describing the corrosion of an iron based alloy in a nuclear waste repository. In comparison with the classical drift-diffusion system arising in the modeling of semiconductor devices, the originality of the corrosion model lies in the boundary conditions which are of Robin type and induce an additional coupling between the equations. We prove the existence of a weak solution by passing to the limit on a sequence of approximate solutions given by a semi-discretization in time.

Transparent boundary conditions for locally perturbed infinite hexagonal periodic media

In this paper, we propose a strategy to determine the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator for infinite, lossy and locally perturbed hexagonal periodic media. We obtain a factorization of this operator involving two non local operators. The first one is a DtN type operator and corresponds to a half-space problem. The second one is a Dirichlet-to-Dirichlet (DtD) type operator related to the symmetry properties of the problem. The half-space DtN operator is characterized via Floquet-Bloch transform, a family of elementary strip problems and a family of stationary Riccati equations. The DtD operator is the solution of an affine operator valued equation which can be reformulated as a non standard integral equation.
