Random walks and contracting elements II: Translation length and Quasi-isometric embedding

Continuing from a companion article: 'Random walks and contracting elements I: Deviation inequality and limit laws', we study random walks on metric spaces with contracting elements. We prove that random subgroups of the isometry group of a metric space is quasi-isometrically embedded into the space. We discuss this problem in two senses, namely, one involving random walks and the other involving counting problems. We also establish the genericity of contracting elements and the CLT and its converse for translation length.

Confined subgroups in groups with contracting elements

In this paper, we study the growth of confined subgroups through boundary actions of groups with contracting elements. We establish that the growth rate of a confined subgroup is strictly greater than half of the ambient growth rate in groups with purely exponential growth. Along the way, several results are obtained on the Hopf decomposition for boundary actions of subgroups with respect to conformal measures. In particular, we prove that confined subgroups are conservative, and examples of subgroups with nontrivial Hopf decomposition are constructed. We show a connection between Hopf decomposition and quotient growth and provide a dichotomy on quotient growth of Schreier graphs for subgroups in hyperbolic groups.

Random walks on groups and superlinear divergent geodesics

In this paper, we study random walks on groups that contain superlinear divergent geodesics, in the line of thoughts of Goldsborough-Sisto. The existence of a superlinear divergent geodesic is a quasi-isometry invariant which allows us to execute Gouëzel's pivoting technique. We develop the theory of superlinear divergence and establish a central limit theorem for random walks on these groups.

Linear growth of translation lengths of random isometries on Gromov hyperbolic spaces and Teichmüller spaces

We investigate the translation lengths of group elements that arise in random walks on the isometry groups of Gromov hyperbolic spaces. In particular, without any moment condition, we prove that non-elementary random walks exhibit at least linear growth of translation lengths. As a corollary, almost every random walk on mapping class groups eventually becomes pseudo-Anosov and almost every random walk on $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ eventually becomes fully irreducible. If the underlying measure further has finite first moment, then the growth rate of translation lengths is equal to the drift, the escape rate of the random walk. We then apply our technique to investigate the random walks induced by the action of mapping class groups on Teichm{ü}ller spaces. In particular, we prove the spectral theorem under finite first moment condition, generalizing a result of Dahmani and Horbez.

Genericity of contracting geodesics in groups

Let G be a finitely generated group and Cay(G, S) be the Cayley graph of G with respect to a finite generating set S. We characterize the Gromov hyperbolicity of G in terms of the genericity of contracting elements in Cay(G, S).

Central limit theorem and geodesic tracking on hyperbolic spaces and Teichmüller spaces

We study random walks on the isometry group of a Gromov hyperbolic space or Teichmüller space. We prove that the translation lengths of random isometries satisfy a central limit theorem if and only if the random walk has finite second moment. While doing this, we recover the central limit theorem of Benoist and Quint for the displacement of a reference point and establish its converse. Also discussed are the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm. Finally, we prove sublinear geodesic tracking by random walks with finite $(1/2)$-th moment and logarithmic tracking by random walks with finite exponential moment.

Pseudo-Anosovs are exponentially generic in mapping class groups

Given a finite generating set $S$, let us endow the mapping class group of a closed hyperbolic surface with the word metric for $S$. We discuss the following question: does the proportion of non-pseudo-Anosov mapping classes in the ball of radius $R$ decrease to 0 as $R$ increases? We show that any finite subset $S'$ of the mapping class group is contained in a finite generating set $S$ such that this proportion decreases exponentially. Our strategy applies to weakly hyperbolic groups and does not refer to the automatic structure of the group.

Random walks on mapping class groups

This survey is concerned with random walks on mapping class groups. We illustrate how the actions of mapping class groups on Teichmüller spaces or curve complexes reveal the nature of random walks, and vice versa. Our emphasis is on the analogues of classical theorems, including laws of large numbers and central limit theorems, and the properties of harmonic measures, under optimal moment conditions. We also explain the geometric analogy between Gromov hyperbolic spaces and Teichmüller spaces that has been used to copy the properties of random walks from one to the other.

Topological entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps from a typical Thurston's construction

In this paper, we develop a way to extract information about a random walk associated with a typical Thurston's construction. We first observe that a typical Thurston's construction entails a free group of rank 2. We also present a proof of the spectral theorem for random walks associated with Thurston's construction that have finite second moment with respect to the Teichmüller metric. Its general case was remarked by Dahmani and Horbez. Finally, under a hypothesis not involving moment conditions, we prove that random walks eventually become pseudo-Anosov. As an application, we first discuss a random analogy of Kojima and McShane's estimation of the hyperbolic volume of a mapping torus with pseudo-Anosov monodromy. As another application, we discuss non-probabilistic estimations of stretch factors from Thurston's construction and the powers for Salem numbers to become the stretch factors of pseudo-Anosovs from Thurston's construction.

On the surjectivity of the Symplectic representation of the mapping class group

In this note, we study the symplectic representation of the mapping class group. In particular, we discuss the surjecivity of the representation restricted to certain mapping classes. It is well-known that the representation itself is surjective. In fact the representation is still surjective after restricting on pseudo-Anosov mapping classes. However, we show that the surjectivity does not hold when the representation is restricted on orientable pseudo-Anosovs, even after reducing its codomain to integer symplectic matrices with a bi-Perron leading eigenvalue. In order to prove the non-surjectivity, we explicitly construct an infinite family of symplectic matrices with a bi-Perron leading eigenvalue which cannot be obtained as the symplectic representation of an orientable pseudo-Anosov mapping class.

Compensation of aberration and speckle noise in quantitative phase imaging using lateral shifting and spiral phase integration

We present a simple and effective method to eliminate system aberrations and speckle noise in quantitative phase imaging. Using spiral integration, complete information about system aberration is calculated from three laterally shifted phase images. The present method is especially useful when measuring confluent samples in which acquisition of background area is challenging. To demonstrate validity and applicability, we present measurements of various types of samples including microspheres, HeLa cells, and mouse brain tissue. Working conditions and limitations are systematically analyzed and discussed.
