Deformations of the tangent bundle of a projective hypersurface

For a nonsingular hypersurface $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n, n \geq 4,$ of degree $d \geq 2$, we show that the space $H^1(X, \End(T_X))$ of infinitesimal deformations of the tangent bundle $T_X$ has dimension ${n+d-1 \choose d} (d-1)$ and all infinitesimal deformations are unobstructed even though $H^2(X, \End(T_X))$ can be nonzero. Furthermore, we prove that the irreducible component of the moduli space of stable bundles containing the tangent bundle is a rational variety, by constructing an explicit birational model.

Counting maximal isotropic subbundles of orthogonal bundles over a curve

Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve and $V$ an orthogonal bundle over $C$. Let $\IQeV$ be the isotropic Quot scheme parameterizing degree $e$ isotropic subsheaves of maximal rank in $V$. We give a closed formula for intersection numbers on components of $\IQeV$ whose generic element is saturated. As a special case, for $g \ge 2$, we compute the number of isotropic subbundles of maximal rank and degree of a general stable orthogonal bundle in most cases when this is finite. This is an orthogonal analogue of Holla's enumeration of maximal subbundles in \cite{Ho}, and of the symplectic case studied in \cite{CCH1}.

Simplicity of tangent bundles on the moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles over a curve

The variety of minimal rational tangents associated to Hecke curves was used by J.-M.Hwang [8] to prove the simplicity of the tangent bundle on the moduli of vector bundles over a curve. In this paper, we use the tangent maps of the symplectic and orthogonal Hecke curves to prove an analogous result for symplectic and orthogonal bundles. In particular, we show the nondegeneracy of the associated variety of minimal rational tangents, which implies the simplicity of the tangent bundle on the moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles over a curve. We also show that for large enough genus, the tangent map is an embedding for a general symplectic or orthogonal bundle.

Low rank orthogonal bundles and quadric fibrations

Let $C$ be a curve and $V \to C$ an orthogonal vector bundle of rank $r$. For $r \le 6$, the structure of $V$ can be described using tensor, symmetric and exterior products of bundles of lower rank, essentially due to the existence of exceptional isomorphisms between $\mathrm{Spin} (r , \mathbb{C})$ and other groups for these $r$. We analyze these structures in detail, and in particular use them to describe moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles. Furthermore, the locus of isotropic vectors in $V$ defines a quadric subfibration $Q_V \subset \mathbb{P} V$. Using familiar results on quadrics of low dimension, we exhibit isomorphisms between isotropic Quot schemes of $V$ and certain ordinary Quot schemes of line subbundles. In particular, for $r \le 6$ this gives a method for enumerating the isotropic subbundles of maximal degree of a general $V$, when there are finitely many.

Minimal rational curves on the moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles

Let $C$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g$ and $L$ a line bundle over $C$. Let $\mathcal{MS}_C(n,L)$ and $\mathcal{MO}_C(n,L)$ be the moduli spaces of $L$-valued symplectic and orthogonal bundles respectively, over $C$ of rank $n$. We construct rational curves on these moduli spaces which generalize Hecke curves on the moduli space of vector bundles. As a main result, we show that these Hecke type curves have the minimal degree among the rational curves passing through a general point of the moduli spaces. As its byproducts, we show the non-abelian Torelli theorem and compute the automorphism group of moduli spaces.

Irreducibility of Lagrangian Quot schemes over an algebraic curve

Let $C$ be a complex projective smooth curve and $W$ a symplectic vector bundle of rank $2n$ over $C$. The Lagrangian Quot scheme $LQ_{-e}(W)$ parameterizes subsheaves of rank $n$ and degree $-e$ which are isotropic with respect to the symplectic form. We prove that $LQ_{-e}(W)$ is irreducible and generically smooth of the expected dimension for all large $e$, and that a generic element is saturated and stable.

Isotropic Quot schemes of orthogonal bundles over a curve

We study the isotropic Quot schemes $IQ_e (V)$ parameterizing degree $e$ isotropic subsheaves of maximal rank of an orthogonal bundle $V$ over a curve. The scheme $IQ_e (V)$ contains a compactification of the space $IQ^o_e (V)$ of degree $e$ maximal isotropic subbundles, but behaves quite differently from the classical Quot scheme, and the Lagrangian Quot scheme in [6]. We observe that for certain topological types of $V$, the scheme $IQ_e (V)$ is empty for all $e$. In the remaining cases, for infinitely many $e$ there are irreducible components of $IQ_e (V)$ consisting entirely of nonsaturated subsheaves, and so $IQ_e (V)$ is strictly larger than the closure of $IQ^o_e (V)$. As our main result, we prove that for any orthogonal bundle $V$ and for $e \ll 0$, the closure $\overline{IQ^o_e (V)}$ of $IQ^o_e (V)$ is either empty or consists of one or two irreducible connected components, depending on $°(V)$ and $e$. In so doing, we also characterize the nonsaturated part of $\overline{IQ^o_e (V)}$ when $V$ has even rank.

Counting maximal Lagrangian subbundles over an algebraic curve

Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve and $W$ a symplectic bundle over $C$. Let $LQ_e (W)$ be the Lagrangian Quot scheme parametrizing Lagrangian subsheaves $E \subset W$ of degree $e$. We give a closed formula for intersection numbers on $LQ_e (W)$. As a special case, for $g \ge 2$, we compute the number of Lagrangian subbundles of maximal degree of a general stable symplectic bundle, when this is finite. This is a symplectic analogue of Holla's enumeration of maximal subbundles in [13].

Non-defectivity of Grassmannian bundles over a curve

Let Gr(2, E) be the Grassmann bundle of two-planes associated to a general bundle E over a curve X. We prove that an embedding of Gr(2, E) by a certain twist of the relative Plücker map is not secant defective. This yields a new and more geometric proof of the Hirschowitz-type bound on the Lagrangian Segre invariant for orthogonal bundles over X, analogous to those given for vector bundles and symplectic bundles in [2, 3]. From the non-defectivity we also deduce an interesting feature of a general orthogonal bundle over X, contrasting with the classical and symplectic cases: Any maximal Lagrangian subbundle intersects at least one other maximal Lagrangian subbundle in positive rank.

Lagrangian subbundles of orthogonal bundles of odd rank over an algebraic curve

An orthogonal bundle over a curve has an isotropic Segre invariant determined by the maximal degree of a Lagrangian subbundle. This invariant, and the induced stratifications on moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles, were studied for bundles of even rank in [4]. In this paper, we obtain analogous results for bundles of odd rank. We obtain a sharp upper bound on the isotropic Segre invariant. We show the irreducibility of the induced strata on the moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles of odd rank, and compute their dimensions. As a key ingredient of the proofs, we study the correspondence between Lagrangian subbundles of orthogonal bundles of even and odd rank.

Constructions by ruler and compass, together with a fixed conic

It is well-known to be impossible to trisect an arbitrary angle and duplicate an arbitrary cube by a ruler and a compass. On the other hand, it is known from the ancient times that these constructions can be performed when it is allowed to use several conic curves. In this paper, we prove that any point constructible from conics can be constructed using a ruler and a compass, together with a single fixed non-degenerate conic different from a circle.

A stratification on the moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles over a curve

A symplectic or orthogonal bundle $V$ of rank $2n$ over a curve has an invariant $t(V)$ which measures the maximal degree of its isotropic subbundles of rank $n$. This invariant $t$ defines stratifications on moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles. We study this stratification by relating it to another one given by secant varieties in certain extension spaces. We give a sharp upper bound on $t(V)$, which generalizes the classical Nagata bound for ruled surfaces and the Hirschowitz bound for vector bundles, and study the structure of the stratifications on the moduli spaces. In particular, we compute the dimension of each stratum. We give a geometric interpretation of the number of maximal Lagrangian subbundles of a general symplectic bundle, when this is finite. We also observe some interesting features of orthogonal bundles which do not arise for symplectic bundles, essentially due to the richer topological structure of the moduli space in the orthogonal case.

Lagrangian subbundles of symplectic bundles over a curve

A symplectic bundle over an algebraic curve has a natural invariant $\sLag$ determined by the maximal degree of its Lagrangian subbundles. This can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Segre invariants of a vector bundle. We give a sharp upper bound on $\sLag$ which is analogous to the Hirschowitz bound on the classical Segre invariants. Furthermore, we study the stratifications induced by $\sLag$ on moduli spaces of symplectic bundles, and get a full picture for the case of rank four.

Endomorphisms of hypersurfaces of Fano manifolds of Picard number 1

It is conjectured that a Fano manifold of Picard number 1 which is not a projective space admits no endomorphisms of degree bigger than 1. Beauville confirmed this for hypersurfaces of projective space. We study this problem for hypersurfaces of an arbitrary Fano manifold of Picard number 1.

Secant varieties and Hirschowitz bound on vector bundles over a curve

For a vector bundle V over a curve X of rank n and for each integer r in the range 1 \le r \le n-1, the Segre invariant s_r is defined by generalizing the minimal self-intersection number of the sections on a ruled surface. In this paper we generalize Lange and Narasimhan's results on rank 2 bundles which related the invariant s_1 to the secant varieties of the curve inside certain extension spaces. For any n and r, we find a way to get information on the invariant s_r from the secant varieties of certain subvariety of a scroll over X. Using this geometric picture, we obtain a new proof of the Hirschowitz bound on s_r.

Cohomology of the moduli space of Hecke cycles

Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g \ge 3$ and let $M_0$ be the moduli space of semistable bundles over $X$ of rank 2 with trivial determinant. Three different desingularizations of $M_0$ have been constructed by Seshadri \cite{Se1}, Narasimhan-Ramanan \cite{NR}, and Kirwan \cite{k5}. In this paper, we construct a birational morphism from Kirwan's desingularization to Narasimhan-Ramanan's, and prove that the Narasimhan-Ramanan's desingularization (called the moduli space of Hecke cycles) is the intermediate variety between Kirwan's and Seshadri's as was conjectured recently in \cite{KL}. As a by-product, we compute the cohomology of the moduli space of Hecke cycles.
