The Berry dipole photovoltaic demon and the thermodynamics of photo-current generation within the optical gap of metals

We dismantle the previously held misconception that it is impossible for bulk rectification mechanisms to induce a net DC electric current when the frequency of the impinging radiation lies within the optical gap of a metal in the limit of small carrier relaxation rates. We argue that generically such in-gap rectification mechanisms are irreversible and accompanied by a continuous exchange of energy with a heat bath and must also be necessarily accompanied by a small but finite absorption of radiation in order to guarantee the positivity of the net entropy production and abide by the second law of thermodynamics. We show, however, that the intra-band non-linear Hall effect arising from the Berry curvature is a special kind of in-gap rectification mechanism that behaves as a ``photo-voltaic demon'', namely it can operate as an ideal reversible and dissipationless conveyor of energy between the radiation and an external circuit. Its reversible nature allows for an interesting mode of operation as an amplifier of circularly polarized light, whose efficiency can approach 100%, and which could be technologically promising especially in the infrared frequency range.

Quantum Monte Carlo at the Graphene Quantum Hall Edge

We study a continuum model of the interface of graphene and vacuum in the quantum hall regime via sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo, allowing us to investigate the interplay of topology and strong interactions in a graphene quantum Hall edge for large system sizes. We focus on the topological phase transition from the spin polarized state with symmetry protected gapless helical edges to the fully charge gapped canted-antiferromagnet state with spontaneous symmetry breaking, driven by the Zeeman energy. Our large system size simulations allow us to detail the behaviour of various quantities across this transition that are amenable to be probed experimentally, such as the spatially and energy-resolved local density of states and the local compressibility. We find peculiar kinks in the branches of the edge dispersion, and also an unexpected large charge susceptibility in the bulk of the canted-antiferromagnet associated with its Goldstone mode.

Theory of Competing Charge Density Wave, Kekule and Antiferromagnetic ordered Fractional Quantum Hall states in Graphene aligned with Boron Nitride

We investigate spin and valley symmetry-broken fractional quantum Hall phases within a formalism that naturally extends the paradigm of quantum Hall ferromagnetism from integer to fractional quantum Hall states, allowing us to construct detailed phase diagrams for a large class of multi-component states. Motivated by recent experiments on Graphene aligned with a Boron Nitride substrate, we predict a sequence of transitions realized by increasing the magnetic field, starting from a sub-lattice polarized state to a valley coherent Kekule charge density wave state and further to an anti-ferromagnetic phase. Moreover for filling fractions such as $ν=\pm 1/3$, we predict that the system undergoes a transition at low fields, that not only differ by the spin-valley orientation of the fractionally filled flavors but also by their intrinsic fractional quantum Hall nature. This transition is from a Laughlin-like state to a two component Halperin-like state both with a charge density wave order. Moreover for $ν=\pm 1/3,\pm 2/3$, we predict a "canted Kekule density phase"(CaKD) where the spinors of integer and fractionally occupied components have different orientations in the valley Bloch sphere, in contrast to the Kekule state for the integer quantum Hall state at neutrality where both occupied components have the same orientation in the valley Bloch sphere.

Probing the Quantum Noise of the Spinon Fermi Surface with NV Centers

We study the transverse electrical conductivity and the corresponding magnetic noise of a two-dimensional U(1) spin liquid state with a spinon Fermi surface. We show that in the quasi-static regime these responses have the same wave-vector dependence as that of a metal but are reduced by a dimensionless pre-factor controlled by the ratio of orbital diamagnetic susceptibilities of the spinons and chargons, correcting previous work. We estimate that this quasi-static regime is comfortably accessed by the typical NV center splittings of a few GHz and estimate that the expected T1 times for an NV center placed above candidate materials, such as the organic dmit and ET salts, monolayer 1T-TaS2/Se2, would range from several tens to a few hundred milliseconds.

Pseudoscalar U(1) spin liquids in $α$-RuCl$_3$

A recent experiment has reported oscillations of the thermal conductivity of $α$-RuCl$_3$ driven by an in-plane magnetic field that are reminiscent of the quantum oscillations in metals. At first glance, these observations are consistent with the presence of the long-sought-after spinon Fermi surface state. Strikingly, however, the experiment also reported vanishing thermal Hall conductivity coexisting with the oscillations of the longitudinal one. Such absence of the thermal Hall effect must originate from crystalline symmetries of $α$-RuCl$_3$. But if the system was a traditional spinon fermi surface state, these symmetries would also necessarily prohibit the emergence of a magnetic field acting on the spinons, in stark contradiction with the presence of quantum oscillations in experiments. To reconcile these observations, we introduce a new class of symmetry enriched ``pseudoscalar" U(1) spin liquids in which certain crystalline symmetries act as a particle-hole conjugation on the spinons. The associated pseudoscalar spinon Fermi surface states allow for the coexistence of an emergent Landau quantizing magnetic field while having an exactly zero thermal Hall conductivity. We develop a general theory of these states by constructing Gutzwiller-projected wave-functions and describing how they naturally appear as U(1) spin liquids with a distinctive projective symmetry group implementation of crystalline symmetries in the fermionic parton representation of spins. We propose that the field induced quantum disordered state in $α$-RuCl$_3$ descends from a pseudoscalar spinon fermi surface state that features compensated spinon-particle and spinon-hole pockets possibly located around the $M$ points of its honeycomb Brillouin zone. These points are connected via a wave-vector associated with the emergence of the competing zig-zag antiferromagnetic state.

Shear sound of two-dimensional Fermi liquids

We study the appearance of a sharp collective mode which features transverse current fluctuations within the bosonization approach to interacting two-dimensional Fermi liquids. This mode is analogous to the shear sound modes in elastic media, and, unlike the conventional zero sound mode, it is damped in weakly interacting Fermi liquids and only separates away from the particle-hole continuum when the quasiparticle mass becomes twice the transport mass $m^* \gtrsim 2 m$. The shear sound should be present in a large class of interacting charged and neutral Fermi liquids especially those proximate to critical points where the quasiparticle mass diverges. In metals this mode remains linearly dispersing in the presence of the long-ranged Coulomb force, unlike the conventional zero sound mode which becomes the plasma mode. We also detail a quick path between bosonization and classical Landau's Fermi liquid theory by constructing a mapping between the solutions of the classical kinetic equation and the quantized bosonic eigenmodes. By further mapping the kinetic equation into a 1D tight-binding model we solve for the entire spectrum of collective and incoherent particle-hole excitations of Fermi liquids with non-zero $F_0$ and $F_1$ Landau parameters.
