A Planetary Companion to the Intermediate-Mass Giant HD 100655

A precise radial velocity survey conducted by a Korean-Japanese planet search program revealed a planetary companion around the intermediate-mass clump giant HD 100655. The radial velocity of the star exhibits a periodic Keplerian variation with a period, semi-amplitude and eccentricity of 157.57 d, 35.2 m s^-1 and 0.085, respectively. Adopting an estimated stellar mass of 2.4 M_Sun, we confirmed the presence of a planetary companion with a semi-major axis of 0.76 AU and a minimum mass of 1.7 M_Jup. The planet is the lowest-mass planet yet discovered around clump giants with masses greater than 1.9 M_Sun.

Lithium, Sodium, and Potassium Abundances in Sharp-Lined A-Type Stars

The abundances of alkali elements (Li, Na, and K) were determined from the Li I 6708, Na I 5682/5688, and K I 7699 lines by taking into account the non-LTE effect for 24 sharp-lined A-type stars v sin i < 50 km/s, 7000 K < Teff <10000 K, many showing Am peculiarities to different degrees), based on high-dispersion and high-S/N spectral data secured at BOAO (Korea) and OAO (Japan). We found a significant trend that A(Na) tightly scales with A(Fe) irrespective of Teff, which means that Na becomes enriched similarly to Fe in accordance with the degree of Am peculiarity. Regarding lithium, A(Li) mostly ranges between ~3 and ~3.5 (i.e., almost the same as or slightly less than the solar system abundance of 3.3) with a weak decreasing tendency with a lowering of Teff at Teff < 8000 K, though several stars exceptionally show distinctly larger depletion. The abundances of potassium also revealed an apparent Teff-dependence in the sense that A(K) in late-A stars tends to be mildly subsolar (possibly with a weak anti-correlation with A(Fe)) systematically decreasing from ~5.0 (Teff ~ 8500 K) to ~4.6 (Teff ~ 7500 K), while those for early-A stars remain near-solar around ~5.0-5.2. These observational facts may serve as important constraints for any theory aiming to explain chemical anomalies of A-type stars.

A study of the photometric variability of the peculiar magnetic white dwarf WD1953-011

We present and interpret simultaneous new photometric and spectroscopic observations of the peculiar magnetic white dwarf WD1953-011. The flux in the V-band filter and intensity of the Balmer spectral lines demonstrate variability with the rotation period of about 1.45 days. According to previous studies, this variability can be explained by the presence of a dark spot having a magnetic nature, analogous to a sunspot. Motivated by this idea, we examine possible physical relationships between the suggested dark spot and the strong-field magnetic structure (magnetic "spot", or "tube") recently identified on the surface of this star. Comparing the rotationally-modulated flux with the variable spectral observables related to the magnetic "spot" we establish their correlation, and therefore their physical relationship. Modeling the variable photometric flux assuming that it is associated with temperature variations in the stellar photosphere, we argue that the strong-field area and dark, low-temperature spot are comparable in size and located at the same latitudes, essentially overlapping each other with a possible slight longitudinal shift. In this paper we also present a new, improved value of the star's rotational period and constrain the characteristics of the thermal inhomogeneity over the degenerate's surface.

Korean-Japanese Planet Search Program: Substellar Companions around Intermediate-Mass Giants

A Korean-Japanese planet search program has been carried out using the 1.8m telescope at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea, and the 1.88m telescope at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) in Japan to search for planets around intermediate-mass giant stars. The program aims to show the properties of planetary systems around such stars by precise Doppler survey of about 190 G or K type giants together with collaborative surveys of the East-Asian Planet Search Network. So far, we detected two substellar companions around massive intermediate-mass giants in the Korean-Japanese planet search program. One is a brown dwarf-mass companion with 37.6 $M_{\mathrm{J}}$ orbiting a giant HD 119445 with 3.9 $M_{\odot}$, which is the most massive brown dwarf companion among those found around intermediate-mass giants. The other is a planetary companion with 1.8 $M_{\mathrm{J}}$ orbiting a giant star with 2.4 $M_{\odot}$, which is the lowest-mass planetary companion among those detected around giant stars with $>$ 1.9 $M_{\odot}$. Plotting these systems on companion mass vs. stellar mass diagram, there seem to exist two unpopulated regions of substellar companions around giants with 1.5--3 $M_{\odot}$ and planetary companions orbiting giants with 2.4--4 $M_{\odot}$. The existence of these possible unpopulated regions supports a current characteristic view that more massive substellar companions tend to exist around more massive stars.

Substellar Companions to Evolved Intermediate-Mass Stars: HD 145457 and HD 180314

We report the detections of two substellar companions orbiting around evolved intermediate-mass stars from precise Doppler measurements at Subaru Telescope and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. HD 145457 is a K0 giant with a mass of 1.9 M_sun and has a planet of minimum mass m_2sini=2.9 M_J orbiting with period of P=176 d and eccentricity of e=0.11. HD 180314 is also a K0 giant with 2.6 M_sun and hosts a substellar companion of m_2sin i=22 M_J, which falls in brown-dwarf mass regime, in an orbit with P=396 d and e=0.26. HD 145457 b is one of the innermost planets and HD 180314 b is the seventh candidate of brown-dwarf-mass companion found around intermediate-mass evolved stars.

Detection of a Planetary Companion around the giant star \gam1leo

Aims: Our primary goal is to search for planets around intermediate mass stars. We are also interested in studying the nature of radial velocity (RV) variations of K giant stars. Methods: We selected about 55 early K giant (K0 - K4) stars brighter than fifth magnitude that were observed using BOES, a high resolution spectrograph attached to the 1.8 m telescope at BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory). BOES is equipped with $I_2$ absorption cell for high precision RV measurements. Results: We detected a periodic radial velocity variations in the K0 III star \gam1leo with a period of P = 429 days. An orbital fit of the observed RVs yields a period of P = 429 days, a semi-amplitude of K = 208 \mps, and an eccentricity of e = 0.14. To investigate the nature of the RV variations, we analyzed the photometric, CaII $λ$ 8662 equivalent width, and line-bisector variations of \gam1leo. We conclude that the detected RV variations can be best explained by a planetary companion with an estimated mass of m $\sin i = 8.78 M_{Jupiter}$ and a semi-major axis of $a = 1.19$ AU, assuming a stellar mass of 1.23 \Msun.

The Lorentz force in atmospheres of CP stars: 56 Arietis

The presence of electric currents in the atmospheres of magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars could bring important theoretical constrains about the nature and evolution of magnetic field in these stars. The Lorentz force, which results from the interaction between the magnetic field and the induced currents, modifies the atmospheric structure and induces characteristic rotational variability of pressure-sensitive spectroscopic features, that can be analysed using phase-resolved spectroscopic observations. In this work we continue the presentation of results of the magnetic pressure studies in mCP stars focusing on the high-resolution spectroscopic observations of Bp star 56Ari. We have detected a significant variability of the Halpha, Hbeta, and Hgamma spectral lines during full rotation cycle of the star. Then these observations are interpreted in the framework of the model atmosphere analysis, which accounts for the Lorentz force effects. We used the LLmodels stellar model atmosphere code for the calculation of the magnetic pressure effects in the atmosphere of 56Ari taking into account realistic chemistry of the star and accurate computations of the microscopic plasma properties. The Synth3 code was employed to simulate phase-resolved variability of Balmer lines. We demonstrate that the model with the outward-directed Lorentz force in the dipole+quadrupole configuration is likely to reproduce the observed hydrogen lines variation. These results present strong evidences for the presence of non-zero global electric currents in the atmosphere of this early-type magnetic star.

Can Sodium Abundances of A-Type Stars Be Reliably Determined from Na I 5890/5896 Lines?

An extensive non-LTE abundance analysis based on Na I 5890/5896 doublet lines was carried out for a large unbiased sample of ~120 A-type main-sequence stars (including 23 Hyades stars) covering a wide v_e sin i range of ~10--300 km/s, with an aim to examine whether the Na abundances in such A dwarfs can be reliably established from these strong Na I D lines. The resulting abundances ([Na/H]_{58}), which were obtained by applying the T_eff-dependent microturbulent velocities of ξ~2--4 km/s with a peak at T_eff ~ 8000 K (typical for A stars), turned out generally negative with a large diversity (from ~-1 to ~0), while showing a sign of v_e sin i-dependence (decreasing toward higher rotation). However, the reality of this apparently subsolar trend is very questionable, since these [Na/H]_{58} are systematically lower by ~0.3--0.6 dex than more reliable [Na/H]_{61} (derived from weak Na I 6154/6161 lines for sharp-line stars). Considering the large ξ-sensitivity of the abundances derived from these saturated Na I D lines, we regard that [Na/H]_{58} must have been erroneously underestimated, suspecting that the conventional ξvalues are improperly too large at least for such strong high-forming Na I 5890/5896 lines, presumably due to the depth-dependence of ξdecreasing with height. The nature of atmospheric turbulent velocity field in mid-to-late A stars would have to be more investigated before we can determine reliable sodium abundances from these strong resonance D lines.

A Massive Substellar Companion to the Massive Giant HD 119445

We detected a brown dwarf-mass companion around the intermediate-mass giant star HD 119445 (G6III) using the Doppler technique. This discovery is the first result from a Korean-Japanese planet search program based on precise radial velocity measurements. The radial velocity of this star exhibits a periodic Keplerian variation with a period, semi-amplitude and eccentricity of 410.2 days, 413.5 m/s and 0.082, respectively. Adopting a stellar mass of 3.9 M_solar, we were able to confirm the presence of a massive substellar companion with a semimajor axis of 1.71 AU and a minimum mass of 37.6 M_Jup, which falls in the middle of the brown dwarf-mass region. This substellar companion is the most massive ever discovered within 3 AU of a central intermediate-mass star. The host star also ranks among the most massive stars with substellar companions ever detected by the Doppler technique. This result supports the current view of substellar systems that more massive substellar companions tend to exist around more massive stars, and may further constrain substellar system formation mechanisms.

Rotation and surface abundance peculiarities in A-type stars

In an attempt of clarifying the connection between the photospheric abundance anomalies and the stellar rotation as well as of exploring the nature of "normal A" stars, the abundances of seven elements (C, O, Si, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ba) and the projected rotational velocity for 46 A-type field stars were determined by applying the spectrum-fitting method to the high-dispersion spectral data obtained with BOES at BOAO. We found that the peculiarities (underabundances of C, O, and Ca; an overabundance of Ba) seen in slow rotators efficiently decrease with an increase of rotation, which almost disappear at v_e sin i > 100 km s^-1. This further suggests that stars with sufficiently large rotational velocity may retain the original composition at the surface without being altered. Considering the subsolar tendency (by several tenths dex below) exhibited by the elemental abundances of such rapidly-rotating (supposedly normal) A stars, we suspect that the gas metallicity may have decreased since our Sun was born, contrary to the common picture of galactic chemical evolution.

The pecular magnetic field morphology of the white dwarf WD 1953-011: evidence for a large-scale magnetic flux tube?

We present and interpret new spectropolarimetric observations of the magnetic white dwarf WD 1953-011. Circular polarization and intensity spectra of the H$α$ spectral line demonstrate the presence of two-component magnetic field in the photosphere of this star. The geometry consists of a weak, large scale component, and a strong, localized component. Analyzing the rotationally modulated low-field component, we establish a rotation period $P_{rot} = 1.4480 \pm 0.0001$ days. Modeling the measured magnetic observables, we find that the low-field component can be described by the superposition of a dipole and quadrupole. According to the best-fit model, the inclination of the stellar rotation axis with respect to the line of sight is $i \approx 20^\circ$, and the angle between the rotation axis and the dipolar axis is $β\approx 10^\circ$. The dipole strength at the pole is about 180 kG, and the quadrupolar strength is about 230 kG. These data suggest a fossil origin of the low-field component. In contrast, the strong-field component exhibits a peculiar, localized structure (``magnetic spot'') that confirms the conclusions of Maxted and co-workers. The mean field modulus of the spot ($|B_{spot}| = 520 \pm 7$ kG) together with its variable longitudinal magnetic field having a maximum of about +400 kG make it difficult to describe it naturally as a high-order component of the star's global poloidal field. Instead, we suggest that the observed strong-field region has a geometry similar to a magnetic flux tube.

Precise Radial Velocities of Polaris: Detection of Amplitude Growth

We present a first results from a long-term program of a radial velocity study of Cepheid Polaris (F7 Ib) aimed to find amplitude and period of pulsations and nature of secondary periodicities. 264 new precise radial velocity measurements were obtained during 2004-2007 with the fiber-fed echelle spectrograph Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) of 1.8m telescope at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea. We find a pulsational radial velocity amplitude and period of Polaris for three seasons of 2005.183, 2006.360, and 2007.349 as 2K = 2.210 +/- 0.048 km/s, 2K = 2.080 +/- 0.042 km/s, and 2K = 2.406 +/- 0.018 km/s respectively, indicating that the pulsational amplitudes of Polaris that had decayed during the last century is now increasing rapidly. The pulsational period was found to be increasing too. This is the first detection of a historical turnaround of pulsational amplitude change in Cepheids. We clearly find the presence of additional radial velocity variations on a time scale of about 119 days and an amplitude of about +/- 138 m/s, that is quasi-periodic rather than strictly periodic. We do not confirm the presence in our data the variation on a time scale 34-45 days found in earlier radial velocity data obtained in 80's and 90's. We assume that both the 119 day quasi-periodic, noncoherent variations found in our data as well as 34-45 day variations found before can be caused by the 119 day rotation periods of Polaris and by surface inhomogeneities such as single or multiple spot configuration varying with the time.

The BOES spectropolarimeter for Zeeman measurements of stellar magnetic fields

We introduce a new polarimeter installed on the high-resolution fiber-fed echelle spectrograph (called BOES) of the 1.8-m telescope at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, Korea. The instrument is intended to measure stellar magnetic fields with high-resolution (R $\sim$ 60000) spectropolarimetric observations of intrinsic polarization in spectral lines. In this paper we describe the spectropolarimeter and present test observations of the longitudinal magnetic fields in some well-studied F-B main sequence magnetic stars (m_v < 8.8^m). The results demonstrate that the instrument has a high precision ability of detecting the fields of these stars with typical accuracies ranged from about 2G to a few tens of gauss.

The Lorentz force in atmospheres of CP stars: $θ$ Aurigae

Several dynamical processes may induce considerable electric currents in the atmospheres of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars. The Lorentz force, which results from the interaction between the magnetic field and the induced currents, modifies the atmospheric structure and induces characteristic rotational variability of the hydrogen Balmer lines. To study this phenomena we have initiated a systematic spectroscopic survey of the Balmer lines variation in magnetic CP stars. In this paper we continue presentation of results of the program focusing on the high-resolution spectral observations of A0p star \aur (HD 40312). We have detected a significant variability of the H$α$, H$β$, and H$γ$ spectral lines during full rotation cycle of the star. This variability is interpreted in the framework of the model atmosphere analysis, which accounts for the Lorentz force effects. Both the inward and outward directed Lorentz forces are considered under the assumption of the axisymmetric dipole or dipole+quadrupole magnetic field configurations. We demonstrate that only the model with the outward directed Lorentz force in the dipole+quadrupole configuration is able to reproduce the observed hydrogen line variation. These results present new strong evidences for the presence of non-zero global electric currents in the atmosphere of an early-type magnetic star.

A search for kilogauss magnetic fields in white dwarfs and hot subdwarf stars

We present new results of a survey for weak magnetic fields among DA white dwarfs with inclusion of some brighter hot subdwarf stars. We have detected variable circular polarization in the Halpha line of the hot subdwarf star Feige 34 (SP: sdO). From these data, we estimate that the longitudinal magnetic field of this star varies from -1.1 +/- 3.2 kG to +9.6 +/- 2.6 kG, with a mean of about +5 kG and a period longer than 2 h. In this study, we also confirm the magnetic nature of white dwarf WD1105-048 and present upper limits of kilogauss longitudinal magnetic fields of 5 brightest DA white dwarfs. Our data support recent finding that 25% of white dwarfs have kilogauss magnetic fields. This frequency also confirms results of early estimates obtained using the magnetic field function of white dwarfs.

An Upper Limit to the Mass of rho1 Cnc's Radial Velocity Companion

Doppler spectroscopy of rho1 Cnc has detected evidence of a companion with an orbital period of 14.65 days and a minimum mass of 0.88 Jupiter masses. Astrometric observations performed with the Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor 1r using a novel new observing technique have placed an upper limit on the astrometric reflex motion of rho1 Cnc in a time period of only one month. These observations detected no reflex motion induced by the 14.65 day period radial velocity companion, allowing us to place a 3-sigma upper limit of \~0.3 milliarcseconds on the semi-major axis of this motion, ruling out the preliminary Hipparcos value of 1.15 milliarcseconds. The corresponding upper limit on the true mass of the companion is ~30 Mj, confirming that it is a sub-stellar object.
